As a Englishman born in 1972 just before we joined the Common Market now EU I apologise to New Zealand for what our then government did and our stupidity for voting to stay.We were wrong and I hope when we leave the EU we get a bloody good deal with New Zealand which benefits us both.

      No need to apologise
Trade is a 2 way street and unfortunately New Zealand together with other Commonwealth nations were no longer buying British and so it was imperative for us to seek new markets hence Macmillan's decision to join was a no-brainer

We were WARNED about this BEFORE we joined. This was the TRUTH. It's a great tragedy that NO ONE listened. Only a very FEW of us suspected what would happen. We we RIGHT to be concerned.

I hear you! The 1975 referendum was my first ever vote and I took it very seriously but naively voted yes. Since then especially when the document document was released after the 30 years confirmed this I have watched as the UK has made after mistake. And yet the brexiters were accused of being uneducated?!? The whole thing beggars belief!

We only had a referendum after we joined. Heath was a German agent who knew full well what would happen in the next 30 to 40 years. People believed it was a free trade association, although we were being warned by Powell and Shore, I think there was a crisis of confidence at that time. It seemed like the continental countries were doing better than us and the empire had largely gone, therefore people thought this was a way forward.

I suppose a lot of RICH land owners saw the CAP as a way to make even more money from ever decreasing effort. The aristocracy in this country have never given a shit about ordinary people, hence why the ReMoan campaign was overwhelmingly middle and upper class.
Higher food prices and job losses are irrelevant, when you have more than enough to weather the storm. And if you have land that isn't paying its way, then EU subsidies at tax payers expense will ensure the land is kept in the family, for generations to come.
This country is STILL in need of a revolution, despite Brexit. We need to ensure that we are never taken down that road again. We need to asset strip these traitors for trying to sell us out, so they no longer have the power to dictate government policy. And make sure that the government works for the good of the WHOLE nation, not just land owners and their cronies.

  • @ian_b

The Common Market/EU was an agreement between Germany and France to enable Germany its power and economic aspirations in return for protection and subsidy of French agriculture. That could only work properly if other markets (the smaller countries) for French produce could be drawn into the "community". For all the other countries, it was one big con. An entire generation of politicians in the post-war period thought they were paying (that is, their populations were paying) a "reasonable price for peace". Unfortunately since then they have conned many young people, who do not remember life before the EU, into supporting a federal system which does not benefit them and which they do not understand. It's a political tragedy.

We joined the Common Market about the time I started my first paper round and read the papers as I went. I didn’t think it was a good idea then and, as my political opinions changed wildly since, I never stopped thinking it was a bad idea. I can only think that our rulers at the time saw it as a bulwark against the USSR and those within our country who would have had us aligned with that system.

    • @mrtoad8589

You were wrong then, and you're wrong now. The economic consequence of Brexit has been to deprive us of our closest market, and ironically to increase bureaucracy. No wonder public opinion has swung against it. We should have joined the EEC much earlier and influenced its development.

I was the age of the kids in the video at the time. I remember the local grocers and even a family selling their vegetables from an allotment. This has all gone. I agree with the Golden Delicious apple quote. But in the early 80's Sainsbury's came to town replacing Kwik Save and suddenly it seemed we had it all. Was the real end brought on by Thatcher or the EEC? Are standards less now. The food seemed bloody awful in the 1970's. Food for thought from this video in any case.

EU membership has been problematic but it’s NOT the reason the country has a failing education system, broken social security system, housing crisis, low productivity, anaemic economic growth, over reliance on big state, inability to outcompete and outsmart the USA, Japan, Germany, Korea and generally adapt to a changing world.

    • @b1ueocean
      @b1ueocean 2 роки тому

Note that the USA dropped the ball for China during the War on Terror kicked off 15 September 2001.
By 2004, of the industrial added value created by all state-owned industrial enterprises and non-state industrial enterprises with annual turnover exceeding five million yuan, state-owned and state stock-holding enterprises accounted for 42.4 percent, collectively owned enterprises 5.3 percent, the rest taken up by other non-public enterprises, including enterprises with investment from outside mainland China, and individual and private enterprises.
In 2004, of Chinese enterprises ranking in the world's top 500, 14 enterprises of China's mainland were all state-owned. Of China's own top 500, 74 percent (370) were state-owned and state stock-holding enterprises, with assets of 27, 370 billion yuan and realizing profit of 266.3 billion yuan, representing 96.96 percent and 84.09 percent respectively of the top 500 corresponding values.
Some governments invest in war, others invest in unassailable and comprehensive growth prospects 🤷‍♂️
