  • The small-tire drag race scene took off nearly 30 years ago and it still thrives today with dozens of categories for a variety of combinations. In the Carolina’s there is a burgeoning No Time scene where 275 radials and 10.5-inch tires reigns supreme. Jeff Dills has been a fixture in Carolina N/T and other local organizations with his nitrous-fed Fox Mustang coupe and this year he stepped up his game. A new small-block LS engine, built by The Kevin Mullins (TKM), sits between the fenders for 2022 and he recently added a FuelTech engine management system.
The initial start-up of the TKM masterpiece went well, however, the team ran into problems with the smart coils in the FuelTech ignition system. Dills and his crew tried to work through the issues but in the end, they made the decision to book time at FuelTech USA with the Advanced Dyno Training Session. It is a service offered to FuelTech customers that includes a day of dyno testing and education with the company’s technical support staff. In Dills case, the tech group helped identify the source of the smart coil issue and a quick fix was made thanks to a stocked warehouse of parts and components.
The small-block LS engine features a single stage of nitrous, courtesy of Nitrous Outlet, and a FuelTech FT600 engine management system was selected for its large list of standard features. One of the highlights that nitrous-powered racers prefer are the Pro Nitrous controls that come standard in all FuelTech ECUs-FT600, FT550, FT550 LITE, and FT450.
The PRO Nitrous function has the ability to control up to 6 stages of nitrous injection, set operation thresholds, offer custom timers and delays, complete ignition timing and fuel control, nitrous bottle pressure compensation, and individual cylinder trim.
Beyond the PRO Nitrous functions, the FT600 engine management system has standard features like sequential injection and ignition, O2 closed loop, Data Logger, Delay Box, Boost Controller, and Nitrous Controller. The FT450, FT550, and FT600 ECU units also come with an LCD display and touchscreen, showing real-time data and allowing the user to make adjustments without a PC connection. Additionally, all the PowerFT control units feature AMP SUPERSEAL automotive connectors, accelerometer and gyroscope, and 2 CAN networks. The FT600, FT550, and FT550 LITE are capable of transmission controls with its built-in GearControl. If that isn’t enough, the FuelTech Input Expander is available, providing 24 additional inputs, including 20 analog inputs and 4 VR sensors.
By the end of the day, Dills’ Mustang spun the dyno to 1,110 WHP using baby nitrous jets as he got a grip on tuning his beastly hot rod. Next time outing, he plans to increase the nitrous jet and show the boosted crowd that nitrous-powered racecars are still something to fear in the small-tire wars.
From traction-limited, small-tire No Time cars to the baddest Pro Nitrous rides in PDRA, there is a reason you’re seeing #FuelTechEverywhere with nitrous-powered drag cars.
