I only read four books in September so far, which is "normal" for my reading habits. Two of those were quite short, too, but took quite a while for me to read. I never "measured" my reading in that way before booktube, which tends to turn reading into a competition. All the better to have a few slow readers here as well.🙂 I remember reading "The Appple Tree" as a teen, which is four decades ago - and I never could forget the eerie feeling of the the story. . As for slumps: I think they just make me appreciate my beloved reading even more when I'm back after a few slumpy days or even weeks and are necessary breaks once in a while before reading turns into sort of routine or even duty. 😧
My September was slumpy too. Maybe it's a change of seasons thing. It is for me. A lot of people love autumn and I wish I did, too, but I dislike all the rain so much, and the days feel less bright. I just want to go swimming in the sea and bask in the sun like a cat. 😅 Hera sounds interesting, I think you're totally right about her not getting the 3D treatment, it's something I noticed, too. I haven't read anything by Daphne du Maurier but this collection of short stories sounds like a good place to start. I read Heidi as a child. I remember loving the animated film even more. But I barely remember it now so it was nice to revisit it. Your commentary on it was really lovely. I also always connected with the ideas of simplicity, slow living, connection to nature. My childhood dream was to live in a remote cottage in nature with a dog, a garden and lots of books. Kind of sad to think how far I'm from that dream. But I should end on a positive note. :) I have a lot of things to be grateful for in my life.
In regards to children's books I recently read the complete brambly hedge by Jill Barklem. I love nature and living simply so Heidi is appealing. I've not much interest in adult fiction at the moment. Just non fiction that is related to nature. This month I loved The wild places by Robert Macfarlane. I contain multitudes by Ed Young. And currently loving Sapiens by Yuval Noah Harari.
You’ve intrigued me with Shadows of Winter Robins. I love Daphne du Maurier’s writing, but I haven’t tried her short stories. That sounds perfect for October.
I had a Heidi phase as a kid. I think it was concurrent with my Little House phase and remember being fascinated with the one room homes and spare possessions. I think my favorite books this month were The History of Sound, My Friends and Convenience Store Woman.
Shadows of Winter Robins sounds interesting, I’ll keep my eye out for that, don’t think it’s out over here yet. I’ve just finished Shy Creatures by Clare Chambers which was equally as good or even better than Small Pleasures.

Oooh the Du Mauirer sounds intriguing! My September reading has been intentionally slow and predominately Woolf and other classic writers. Really fun.
