Re Diane Setterfield, my absolute favourite is The Thirteenth Tale. The film adaptation (starring Olivia Coleman and Vanessa Redgrave), is also excellent.
Entering storm season here in Queensland so there are electrical storms and rain which puts a bit of a dampener on things. I've had a few reading duds recently, but I'm going to indulge in a pre Christmas book haul. Currently reading The Empusium by Olga Tokarczuk which is very quirky, and planning to head to more Aussie fiction afterwards.
There was a moment when you started mixing with the shaving brush and I thought you were making a face mask 🙊 Love this video, I enjoy listening to you talking about books, but also about other things going on, what you have watched, etc. I recommend The Thirteenth Tale by Diane Setterfield, I recently read it for the first time and was captivated by it.
Lovely relaxing video. So glad to have stumbled across your channel. I am like you with TBRs, if I commit to a list I will veer off into another book pretty much straight away but I have a general list of books I hope to read and then try to pick at least one from the list when picking up books from the library or audiobooks. In the last few years, I have reached for children's books around Christmas/early new year time however, this last year, I would say every 5th book is a Children's book. Something so relaxing about it or a nice palette cleanser between other reads. For non-fiction November, I am reading The Heartbeat of Trees by Peter Wohlleben and after watching your last video, it pushed me to finally commit and finish reading Once upon a river by Diane Setterfield.
I like both formats of your videos (during the month and monthly wrap ups) but if i had to choose one (for time purposes, etc) it would be the monthly wrap ups. 😊
I am so happy I found your channel!! ❤️
Welcome!!
I am so glad I found your channel! Hello from Tassie! :)
Hello back from the mainland! 😄
In our tea room at work we have a book case of books, dvds and music. Seems to be a bit of a dumping ground more than anything. But I recently got a copy of Charlottes Web from there. Today a bought Watership Down. Haven't read it before. Looking forward to it. I like hearing about peoples reading either as they go or monthly wraps ups. However if they do both I only watch one or the other. :)
Roal Dahl’s books are very agresssive to me. I DNFed “Circe”, it was soooo boring
Please share as you go along!
Hello Angela! Another really interesting video. You are very engaging and I am really enjoying your efforts. I certainly would not let my grandkids read Minpins at that young age. I think this is a different type of censorship we are talking about here. Age appropriateness reading levels V’s rewriting/editing or removing the book from circulation due to content. 🤷♀️please can we have a wee peek at the finished bedroom? Your mood board looks fabulous! ❤🇨🇦
Great video Angela. I have a Netflix recommendation for you but it's not Korean, it's about a man from Norway. It's called The Remarkable Life of Iberlin and it's about this young man Mats who lived with a genetic disorder similar to CF. He loved playing computer games but when he died his family were sad that he didn't get to have relationships, friends, make a contribution to society etc. Then they posted on his blog that he had died and all these people came forward who were his online gaming friends that his family knew nothing about. Part of the doco recreates the game and shows his character interacting with other people/characters. It's really well done. It starts a bit slow and it is nearly 2 hours long but definitely worth a watch.
Maybe you could do a video once every two weeks and on the 2nd half of the month, pick your favorite book of the month. Have you been keeping track of your favorite reads and picked a favorite each month? For me, it tends to be nonfiction even though I do read more fictional books. Can't wait to decide which is my favorite book of 2024. Red Dog and Limberlost sound very interesting.
It's Tuesday at 4:20 pm where I live...just got home from work and am relaxing. So glad to see a video from you! I believe it is Wednesday morning there... enjoy your day!😊
I loved this video Angela, great to hear about what you’re reading and are up to in life. Glad you’re enjoying Stone Yard Devotional, here’s hoping it will win!
I’m excited to know more about your guest room. I hope it will be ready in time for Christmas. Me and my husband are actually getting a guest room ready aswell and it needs to be done by Christmas too, when my son and his wife will come from the USA ( we live in Sweden). Unfortunately it’s not all up to us because we are waiting for the craftsmen to come and do the floor and put in a new window. I don’t know where to put the guests if it doesn’t go as planned! You seem to be reading a lot of good books. I think I prefer getting a wrap up at the end of the month rather than getting the reviews directly after you’ve read the books but it’s nice to know what you are currently reading.
Oh heck no. I definitely wouldn’t read The Minpins to my child. Nothing wrong with censoring that one
I really do need to read a Charlotte Wood! I loved this video. 🥰🥰
Hello Angela. It’s breakfast time here in Western Canada and I have been enjoying your video with my egg and toast! It seems that reviewing each book as you finish it would be easier for you while it’s fresh in your mind. Then maybe a brief recap at the end of the month. Once Upon a River was so captivating but, for me, The Thirteenth Tale, maybe my favourite book of all time, edges it out. Enjoy your decorating project and perhaps a photo or two when it’s finished?
I cannot believe that we live in free countries, and books are banned, especially in libraries. I have shared special books with special people and never receive them back. I cannot understand that! I hunger to share books but no more.😢
I have MS. For the last 2 1/2 years I have been unable to use my arms and hands. Audiobooks have been lifesaver. I can put in stand or lay down and still devour a book. I am an avid reader. Without books, I would go crazy. What an innovation E-books and audiobooks have been for me! I have also had optic neuritis and was blind for several weeks many years ago. I did not have this resource at the time. I was in despair. We never know what abilities will come back and if all the way. I have many permanent souvenirs from my attacks. Just another viewpoint!🤩
So good! Kindred Spirits with you and your subscribers. I always read comments.
Thank you!
I loved A Walk in the Wood. I still practice the mindfulness techniques it taught and look at nature much more introspectively because of it.😊
Oh wonderful!
Breath was a fascinating read. I hope you enjoy it too. I’ve got a few books on the go but my nonfiction book is Radium Girls by Kate Moore. It’s fascinating but appalling what they suffered!
Radium Girls sounds like an incredible read!
Hooray for loving James ♥️🥰♥️
I have loose lists of books I want to read, but, similarly to what you’re choosing to do, I don’t hold myself to them, unless they’re buddy reads. I have a list of classics for this year and a list of classics for 2025. But there are ones on the 2025 list that were also on the 2024 list. 😅 It does need to be fun and it does need to be loose for me to be able to live life!
It is good to be flexible - life happens! :)
I didnt read a lot of childrens classics either as a kid but have as an adult and have really enjoyed it. If you havent already read, I would highly recommend The Jungle Book (original, not Disney version). I love Little Women and Anne of Green Gables too 😊
Yes, I read The Jungle Book as part of this reading list :) It was a lot of fun!
I'm reading James and I love it❤. Greetings from Italy🇮🇹
Ciao!
Very interesting sounding books; have not heard of most of them. I am reading The Salt Path by Raynor Winn because it is short. First impression of this book, these two people were not prepared for walking this over 600-mile trek. Reading it to find out what happens at the end. After this book, I really want to read this larger book from a local author, Steve Luxenberg's Annie's Ghosts which is about "A Journey into a Family Secret". His mother had a sister that he never knew anything about and being a journalist for the newspaper, The Washington Post, he researched her story. His mother's name is Beth. So I want to read to find out who is Annie? Why did Beth not tell Steve about her? Where is she? Along the fall and wintertime in the U.S. I will read a history book-The Alexiad by Anna Komnene who writes about her father's reign, Byzantine Emperor Alexios I so that people would not forget him and his accomplishments. She was the first woman historian who lived 1083-1153 and scholars deem this book as valuable as she writes well about this period. I am also reading a biography of Beatrix Potter on my Kindle. I would also like to read some of works which my library may have. These are fall-winter season nonfiction reads. I have lots of mysteries and winter themed books to read also while waiting for spring.
Sounds like a great reading list! I have The Salt Path high on my list
I’m with you on the whole TBR thing, life’s too short to feel under pressure about what you read, reading is meant to be enjoyable. I like the sound of the Esther Rutter book, have added it to my to buy list😊 I really enjoyed James and won’t be unhappy if it wins but I’m still rooting for Stone Yard Devotional.
Exactly!!
Hello, Angela. I really like your channel! Thanks for your content. I, too, am torn between 'going with the flow' and assigning myself books to read. I end up doing both, lol.
The best of both worlds :) Thanks for being here!
Nestors Breath is a good read. I've been taping my mouth shut at night and sleep better for it. Book recommendation - Losing Eden by Lucy Jones. It's pretty much her investigation why we need nature for out mental and physical health. I've been reading nearly all non fiction so I'm hoping to get some more fiction in. But I'm also a mood reader so we will see. 🤓
Thanks for the rec!
❤📚📚❤️ I really enjoyed Klara and the Sun. I hope you do too. The Pooh book sounds wonderful. I'm 75% through H is for Hawk, and I'd still like to read Wild: From Lost to Found on the Pacific Crest Trail by Cheryl Strayed. But ...just found Riding the Bus With My Sister A True Life Journey by Rachel Simon on my shelves and it's calling to me.
What an excellent list you have on the go!
@AngelasBookcase Thanks! I finished H is for Hawk. Thank you for recommending. It was so good.
Hi Angela.. I'm reading A Walk in the Wood this month too! (I bought the book due to one of your previous videos). I'm also going to read Foxes Unearthed by Lucy Jones. I'm very intrigued by The Well Gardened Mind...and look forward to your thoughts on it. Thanks for sharing...and remember to get outside!😊
Aww Winnie the Pooh is so good :) Thanks for the reminder!
I have read the Ann Fadiman book more than once. She is a brilliant writer.
Thanks!
I'm so sorry for your loss! I read Frankenstein earlier this year and really enjoyed it. I was a little frustrated with our main character - honestly he was more of an anti-hero than a hero - but that was the story Mary Shelley was telling, not the story I wanted her to tell. I can appreciate it as it stands (but I preferred Dracula, which I also read recently).
Thank you 🙏 I understand exactly what you mean about Victor too. I got quite frustrated with him at times.
My first Arnott book was Flames (his first book). It was a five star read for me. It was superb!! I’m not a big magical realism reader but the magical realism really worked. The writing was so good and the way he describes nature👌 I felt the same as you did with Dusk and when I saw the pages I was so worried I got a dud copy. But still a good book. But start with Flames….its one you won’t be disappointed with.
Flames is on my list - I’ve heard nothing but good things!
I have struggled recently to have audiobooks of fiction to really connect with me. Audiobooks of non-fiction has gone well for me. I love a cozy physical nover any day!
It is interesting how different formats work for different things!
Woman's point of view: You might enjoy "Julia" (Sandra Newman)
Thanks!
H is for Hawk sounds amazing. Putting it on my list. Thank you.
You won’t be disappointed!
Your the second person on utube who has recommended Dusk. Definitely will read. I’ve just started watching you and I enjoy your channel a lot.
I'm so glad you like my channel!
Wow, that quote from Dusk! Added to my tbr as long as I can get my hands on ot in Canada 😊
It is such a good one and I hope you don't have to wait too long!
I loved Stone Yard Devotional and so hope it wins the Booker Prize. I hope you enjoy it!
I hope so too!
Dusk sounds fantastic. I have The Rain Heron by Robbie Arnott on my bedside. I'm very much looking forward to reading it.
Hope you enjoy it!
Dusk was great, as are all his novels. Limberlost is historical fiction apparently based on his grandfather’s (or great grandfather’s) life. Flames and The Rain Heron both have tons of magic realism. That’s not normally my thing either but I loved Flames. I think if you read the first couple of pages it’ll hook you.
I loved Wolf Hall too. It can get a bit complicated but worth it.
I can’t wait to try another :)
❤📚📚❤️ I'm sorry for your loss. I'm glad you had such a good reading month. I was just able to borrow H is for Hawk as an audio on Libby! Thank you for the recommendation! Edit: I love photography!
Thank you 😊
Talking of photography - I would suggest seeing the film “Lee” about Lee Miller war photography
Oh yes - I have been waiting for it to come out on streaming! It looks like a fantastic movie and such an interesting woman!
Thanks for sharing your thoughts! 😊
Can't wait to get my hands on "Dusk." It is not out yet in the UK though, as far as I know, and therefor I can't preorder it from Germany. But I'm sure it will be fully worth the waiting time. I just recently added "The Rain Heron" to my shelves. I have a💙for books and authors that are, let's just say, lesser known in my homecountry. 🙂
I hope you don’t have to wait too long but it will be well worth the wait 😉
I second Kim’s recommendation of Wolf Hall! An epic read. But, Stone Yard Devotional is my favourite read of 2024. Phenomenal.
So great to hear!
