If I’m not mistaken she filmed at the actual casa rosada for this song, but they still constructed a replica on a soundstage for close up shots. I could be wrong.

There were some critics at the time this came out, but I literally think she was born to play that (kind of like Salma Hayek was born to play "Frida"). Some people just meld with a role, and this was hers.

She totally merged with Eva in this scene. You can’t help but be captivated. Her amazing vocals are sublime. Madonna performed on the actual balcony where Eva addressed her adoring crowds. Yes! I don't know if you noticed, but this is one of the scenes where you can see her pregnancy. It was the last thing they shot as it took some time to get permission to film at the Casa Rosado so she was heavily pregnant. You can see it in her face as well.
I told you guys those vocal lessons paid off. BIG TIME. A Golden Globe is definitely worth it, although an Oscar would have been amazing. 😊 The differences in her voice are quite large.

it is rumored that it was Madonnas personal plea to the then president of Argentina which finally swayed him into agreeing to letting the production shoot at the actual Rosado - if it is true Alan Parker (rip) must have been so grateful for her contribution in this aspect as well - although it is also said that he was a pompous a-hole soooo....

Evita was the BEST Madonna Voice we've got! The voice training for this was intense and Webber made everything to push the envelope for Madonna...he totally believed in her! Her vibrato and strength in her voice totally were exposed and used in full force! Many were fighting for this role...Barbra Streisand, Patty Lu Pone or others who already played her on Broadway.....but he choose Madonna...and he totally won with her! Stellar reviews, 1 Golden Globe for Madonna, 1 Best Song Oscar for Webber, the most successful Filmmusical from the 90tis.
It was astonishing aswell for Madonna herself: many years critics said she can't sing or act....but here, for this movie, she fought back and made her sweet own revenge for everybody who didn't believe in her!
Cant wait to see you reaction to this amazing Musicalfilm as it will punch all your emotions as you will fell in love with her even more and in a totally new way. Her transformation was simply AMAZING!

Hi Ladies- I cannot wait for your reaction to finally seeing the movie. In this video you get a small sample of how incredible she sounds and looks throughout the film. When this came out I was 23 and a group of us drove into San Francisco to see it at one of the large, older movie houses that had been upgraded with all the latest visual and sound technology for the time. It was around New Year’s and it was cold and rainy and we must have stood out in the rain for at least 2 hours but nobody minded. When we got inside we could only get seats together in like the 3rd row so we were totally immersed in the movie. Looking back we realized that the ventilation system was not doing the job so everyone in the theater was sweating with all the humidity generated by 2000, crowded, wet fans…lol. Again, no one really seemed to mind. Other than an actual concert, this was the next best thing to a feeing of group “euphoria”. And a few minutes into the film when the music comes booming in you could feel a collective surge of goosebumps. One last thing that someone else also mentioned. The reason for the delay in filming this scene was because Alan Parker was denied the use of the palace for the famous balcony scene and it was only after Madonna had a personal meeting with the President of Argentina that he granted them permission to film there.

This balcony scene is the most popular and memorable moment in this film. In the original stage script, this song is primarily sang by the spirit of the deceased Eva Peron appealing to her countrymen not to mourn for her but for their own uncertain fate amidst the political instability in Argentina. During the 7 years she was First Lady, she had given several fiery, emotional speeches before their supporters. This film scene was used to evoke Eva’s final historic speech at this very balcony on October 17, 1951 when she was already terminally ill. She would give a final public radio speech on May 1, 1952. She would die a few months later on July 26, 1952 at age 33. The Argentine Congress bestowed her the title of “Spiritual Leader of the Nation” for her passionate championing of humanitarian and charitable causes for those marginalized in Argentine society. She was given a grand state funeral that was portrayed in the film.
It was said that many of the 4,000 Argentine extras at the ground below the balcony scene she’d tears in seeing the transformation of Madonna into Evita with her performance and image that evoked nostalgic memories of Eva. Here’s a link of a video of the filming from the ground level of that balcony scene: ua-cam.com/video/WCXUJkZ-lTA/v-deo.htmlsi=wVIaPjq5DngQ9K99
It was reported that Buenos Aires was in an economic downturn at the time of the Evita filming in 1996. The success of the movie brought an economic boom to the city’s hotels, restaurants, shops, related businesses when tourists, many Americans, came to see the film location sites, stayed to learn to dance the tango the way Madonna and Antonio Banderas did in the film.
It’s also been said that Madonna portrayed Evita so well because she empathized with and found some parallels with her own in Eva’s life and career, that this beautiful song and its sentiments resonated with Madonna so well.
Some have even suggested that when that sad, very sad day comes, good God forbid, when Madonna finally leaves this physical space, this poignant song will be among her ballads that will be played at her memorial service. I feel this so difficult to contemplate. I imagine it would be a truly emotionally devastating day to experience.
Thank you so much for taking us along on your wonderful Madonna journey.

I remember that year, I was 17 years old. Good day Ladies -
A quickie from me - Madonna also released a Dance version of Evita which we danced to in clubs at that time, if you want to check it out.
Great role for Madonna and it's a mesmerising movie to watch as they go through the whole life of Evita, from childhood to death, and not just her politics. The movie is visually and euphoniously appealing to the senses. I hope I am not giving away any secrets, but here are just five:
    1. Big Hollywood actresses were fighting for this role, including Michelle Pfeiffer, Meryl Streep, and Glenn Close, who were being considered by the team. However, Madonna won them over by writing an impassioned letter to the director, Alan Parker, listing "the reasons why 'I' was the only one who could portray her." She explained that "only 'I' could understand her passion and her pain." Madonna continued, "I can honestly say that I did not write this letter of my own free will. It was as if some other force drove my hand across the page."
2.Madonna won an Academy Award for Best Song and a Golden Globe Award for Best Picture (Comedy or Musical) and Best Original Song. She also won Best Actress - Comedy or Musical at the Golden Globe.
    3. There is no dialogue in the movie. Instead, it is a series of songs that tell the story from beginning to end.
    4. Madonna wore brown contact lenses (for obvious reasons - due to Madonna's gorgeous blue eyes). In an interview, she revealed that they made her feel dizzy, nauseated, and permanently in the dark.
    5. Madonna had a dental bridge put on her teeth to hide her iconic gap between her front teeth and resemble Eva Peron's, as Peron's front teeth pushed her top lip forward slightly.
This is possibly what most people didn't know - Madonna was pregnant during the filming of Evita with her first child, Lourdes. She was so worried that it would ruin her chances of completing the movie, and 5 months after finishing, she welcomed her daughter into the world.
This was never published or spoken, but rather my own thoughts as to why Madonna so desperately wanted to play the role of Eva Peron and why she did so well molding herself into Eva, which fit her like a glove. I personally think it was due to the fact that Eva died in a similar fashion to her mother and at a similar age. It would have been cathartic for Madonna, and I believe it was a cleansing or purging experience for her. To make it even more intense, she was pregnant for the first time, so she would have really been feeling the emotions of her mother.
Bye - Have a great day

Forgot to add - The film directors went to great lengths to cover up the possibility of her "Eva Peron" getting pregnant lol, and for fears of Madonna slipping he didn't film some scenes of her being carried out of the church.
The music video for "You Must Love Me" was filmed after production had wrapped which is why Madonna spends the entire video standing behind a piano, she was eight months Pregnant.

Thank you for sharing this with us! ❤️❤️
Very interesting that there's no dialogue in the film!
And yes, it's incredible to see the difference the contacts made in her eyes - Like an entirely different person.
We had similar thoughts about Madonna's motivation for the role. Maybe playing Eva was an opportunity to step into her own mother's shoes in a way... And like you said, probably very cathartic for her. ❤️
      Have a wonderful day! ❤️

    Hello Ladies,
Fond memories of being in Buenos Aires. We went into the Casa Rosdo but not allowed on the balcony. I have so many photographs being there. And the plaque at her grave. There were so many flowers around her gravesite. Also a LOT of cats. I was amazed how they buried their dead in those mausoleums but down spiral staircases underground.
Also had the best onion rings in a pub across the street. The food was so amazing there❤
Madonna went through extensive vocal training for this as she wasn't ever trained for the stage. You can hear the difference in her vocals when she released new music after this.
Also I think most of us have heard this song... And then IT happened... Someone made it into a 120bpm dance track. Ugh. It is absolutely ridiculous. You gotta hear it if not just for the backing choir. On my list of worst remakes of a song.

The cemetery at Recoleta is amazing, isn't it?
And yes, the food in Argentina is incredible. Did you try medialunas while you were there? They're just the best! Much love! ❤️❤️

@@OurAnxiousReactions The only foods I don't eat are picked beets and liver. Not Pate' or even Liverwurst and onion sandwiches. So I ate everything. Literally the best food I've ever had anywhere I've traveled too. But was so weird to watch the locals flock to McDonald's. I coukd not believe it. I don't eat any fast food, if you can call it food. ❤️

Definitely some of the best food we've ever eaten as well (That's funny about McDonalds! lol).
We had so many wonderful experiences there - Love recalling those memories. Thank you! ❤️❤️

actually the film is surprisinly good, I remember-the whole cinema was silent when the film ended-I never had this kind of experience after a film in a cinema-the whole film is really effective-plus, in Budapest they filmed the part where she leaves a flat, she walks down the stairs(another suitcase is the title i guess), my friend’s brother lived in that house-during filming they were inside their flat, they could see Madonna and her makeup artist working there, they were not allowed to leave the flats for hours-but the house got money for this-everyone watched the crew through the windows….

I’ve never seen the movie or play but I’ve seen this video many times and I feel Madonna was stellar in this role and I will always remember this version of the song, it’s a shame that Patti Lupone was so nasty to Madonna regarding her performance of this role, funny thing I don’t know Patti Lupone’s version

I think both of their performances were stellar. In different ways. Gotta be real, lol. You should listen to her version. Do I love her version? Yes. I love both. Do I like Lupones as a person based off of her cattiness? Hell no.

@@rowanmayfair9249 thanks, I’ll definitely give it a listen, I don’t necessarily have anything against Patti Lupone as I do know she is a great Broadway theater actress and singer

She sings it well enough. Is it the best version? Probably not. I think it took some balls for her to push herself forward for the role. Not my favourite if I'm honest.
