When you said epiphone killer I had to comment,😉 have you seen the gretsch jet club !? $299 brand new and it's phenomenal to the point where my g5420T seems like the entry level and the jet club the intermediate level but yeah it's very very cool, catch one if you can.
It’s getting to the point where the biggest difference between affordable, and expensive guitars, is perceived prestige. I recently bought an LTD EC-256, instead of the Gibson Les Paul Studio that I walked in expecting to buy. The LTD caught my eye, and as soon as I played it, I knew I had to have it. 1/4th the price, yet it’s flawless, plays like butter, and sounds super sweet. No case, but that’s an easy fix.
Artamus Sumatra I think I’m gonna order a LTD ec-256 in lemon drop! I went in to also buy a les Paul or a SG but for the LP BFG and the LP Jr. the QC was lacking so empty handed I left...the Gibson were $649 (on sale) and $799, but the LTD was $449 and much better build quality.
That's like the time I went out to buy a '52RI Tele, but came home with a Squier Classic Vibe instead. I didn't care for the '52, and I tried a couple of other Teles while I was there, but nothing lit me up like the Squier did, so I bought it... No shame, no regrets. I used to be a guitar snob, but I came up in a time when "cheap" or "affordable" always meant "HORRIBLE". Now, I don't care what it says on the headstock, or what anyone else thinks.
Nice Review Shane! I’ve called the USA Warehouse and they’re to receive their next Restock Shipment in June. He could tell me the Tweedtone Amp would be In Stock then for $380 US but didn’t know whether the Grungemaster or the 58L would be in the Shipment. Great Vid! Please keep up the Good Work! And thanks for the Amp advice Mate! Cheers and have a Great Day!!
Can't wait to see the Artist 335 vs the Tokai. Amazing tone coming coming out of that guitar and amp. Of course lets not forget Shane has million dollar hands and can make it talk.
I’m in the UK and bought one of these used on eBay! Really nice guitar but I felt the tone could be improved so I’ve just purchased a second hand set of Seymour Duncan 59’s for only £89 which I will install! Will really be an Epiphone killer then and possibly even a Gibson killer!
DMSProduktions Have already put kluson style tuners and tonepros bridge on it and will upgrade the pots caps and selector switch when changing the pickups! Thinking about a Bigsby B6 mostly for aesthetics! After that I’ll get a new nut, probably graphtec and get a set up done. So for a total outlay of around £360 without Bigsby or just over £600 with, I should end up with a lot of guitar for not a lot of money!
I have one and have gigged with it no problem. For the money they are crazy good. The pickups do have a fair bit of output which I think you mentioned.
Probably the only thing that lets it down is seeing the messy wiring through the F hole and it could do with an emblem on the headstock to make it look a bit classier. The pickguard is a bit weird looking too, so I'll probably change mine over to a more traditional one. Overall, good guitars for price. Especially considering an epi is over $1000 AU now. Way too much for a plywood guitar these days.
Ok Shane why are you doing this to me??? Why?!?!? 😝😝 I absolutely love this guitar!!!! The look, the tone, everything!!!! I honestly thought I was done buying guitars for a while but this Artist Cherry 58 is awesome and I want it now!!! Great tones Shane, can’t wait for the Tokai comparison video!!! Cheers buddy!!🎸🎸🎸🎸🤙🏾🤙🏾🤙🏾
I've got the Epiphone and after a pickup change, I'm really happy with it. I do dislike the headstock, although when I'm playing it, I can't see that anyway lol.
Epiphone do not even make lefty 335s anymore. The Dot hasn’t been made in several years. I wish it was easier for us in the US to get the Artist stuff. Looks like their stuff is a decent brand for the money. After checking, Ebay had the only Dot I could find, and it was 850 Aus used.
Hi, Congratulations on the tutorials on UA-cam. I respect you very much. I'd like to ask you for advice. I would like to buy a 335-like SEMI-ACOUSTIC GUITAR. Nice guitars for the money and great demo as always mate ! Cheers ! P.S. I can't believe what you Aussies have to pay for Epiphones ! It just isn't right !
You do have to take into account the difference between the Australian and American dollar and the differences between both economies. Sure most things are more expensive then they are in the states or what have you, but wages are also on average higher so when you take that into account, it evens out.
I had 2 epiphone 335s, a black es335 & a Sharpton, i hated the baseball fat maple necks, both had dull tone esp in the bass, and not a fan of the cheap epi classic 57 pickups , this red Artist 335 I aquired is better balanced, great neck, great vlca pickups , correct weight , tuners not so great, loved it, gave as gift to friend , truly gigable guitar , i want another one..
It's basically a rebranded Harley benton before they altered the design a bit as it was very Gibson like. Comparable to a real Gibson. I know because I had one same time as a Gibson 335. Only real difference was better fret work and better quality rosewood on the Gibson. Build quality etc was 90% as good as the Gibson. The Harley benton cost 120euro secondhand price and the 70s Gibson 3000euro.
Hi Shane, absolutely loved this review of the Artist Cherry '58, having just received mine yesterday, as a total newby to electric guitar playing, I was beginning to wonder if I'd made the right decision, out of the box the action was way off and undoubtedly the intonation too, you didn't comment on the strings they supplied, the sound and style I'm after is Chet Atkins ,your short demo around the 3:30 min mark sounds just right, I don't have an amp yet and don't think amp sims are for me just yet so the search for an amp is on . many thanks Tony
Hi, I'm Ian from Artist Guitars, we have only just opened in the USA so we are building our stock levels up, We plan to get to full stock level within 6 months
Another thing to always check if your intonation is bad, is the nut. I've learned that most of the intonation problems I've had with guitars has been the nut slots being cut too high.
Would love your thoughts on this Artist Cherry58 vs Artist Black Cherry. Aside from a lack of choice on colour, the black cherry appears on paper to be all this plus bigsby, locking tuners & centre tapped pickups, for the same price. But did they change something to hit the price that makes it compromised?
@@intheblues Artist did tell me they were the same and didn't really explain how the pricing works (left handed cherry is cheaper than right also...somehow) but they did say that pricing changes all the time so this relative pricing situation may change. I'll be watching for your review of what may well become my xmas present to myself : )
Great review Shane! I wish they had those here in the states. I've been eyeing an Eastman T486 for that classic 335 vibe. Have you had any experience with them? Also on my radar are the D'Angelico 335 copies. Any thoughts on those? Keep rocking my friend!
Eastman make great guitars. I played a number of them overseas at Jerry's Lefty Guitars they are still on my channel. I didn't play that exact model though.
Well, as the very happy owner of a Black58 for the past three days, I can safely say that it can more than hold its own against an Epiphone. The build quality is excellent, the guitar is built like an absolute tank! But no heavier than an average semi-hollow guitar. The tone from those pickups is fantastic and the coil taps works brilliantly (with some humbuckers, coil tapping just doesn't provide enough tonal variation), and I'd highly recommend anyone considering a purchase to just go for it, because at that price you won't find a 335-alike better anywhere. I'm just waiting for my Big D Varitone switch now so it can be installed, then I intend getting rid of my other guitars and sticking with my Black58 and a Harley Benton HB35 that I installed a Bigsby-esque vibrato unit and roller bridge on. And if I hadn't bought the HB first, I'd be buying a Black58 with the trem installed.
I picked up a second - hand Epiphone 335 Pro and wouldn't bother thinking about the Gibson. Sure, it's going to be better, but at over £2,000.00 I'm simply not interested!
Nice guitar and tone Shane ! Like it ! I have also the same Tokai wine red SG lke you have. Much better than Gibson. Just checked out the website, but it seems to me, they only sell and ship to the UK, Australia and the USA ? That would be a bommer. I wrote an email to them, to confirm that. That would be stupid in a commercially way. Good competetor for Harley Benton. EastCoast guitars from Anderton's UK seems to have some bad setup issues out of the box, is comming more and more on You Tube . Thanks for the reviews Shane ! Greets from Belgium. BTW.. I'm getting sick of these red and black ES 335 style guitars.. Why don't they make them god damn in ORANGE like Chet Atkins his one ? It's too time consuming to make myself one, but i can buy a Harley Benton for AUD $ 263,762 in black and spraypaint it orange, and make my own humbuckers if needed. That's the original plan. Like those Corvinho little crows too.. simple concept and cool.. and also Australian if i remember well.
@@toddflowers8052 Ooooow.. you are so right Todd ! How stupid of me. But, well, it doesn't do anything of off the fact that they make these type of guitars for 99 % in red, black and sunburst.. And i am getting seasick of it sometimes. Same with Candy Apple Red. Altough i have them all on my wall.. LOL. You just see them everywhere. Don't you agree Todd ? Thanks for the good luck wishes, i will need it, because i want the headstock also orange and maintain the logo. That's gonna be a pain in the.. 333.. Greets.
Thanks Shane👍 based on this review and your comparison video with the Tokai, I jumped onto the Artist website and purchased one of the customer returns… but it was the Deluxe Black. Has the smallest chip on the headstock about the size of a pin. The deluxe model is so impressive… push pull pots for coil splits, an ebony fretboard ( can you believe that!) and the bridge saddles appear to be brass!! Bone nut and locking tuners cap off this awesome guitar - my new pick me up first🤪. The stop tail piece is a design I’ve never seen before but is much better than the old standard. I hope more manufacturers pickup this design. You did the sound thing with the hum buckets but in split coil mode they sound very good too. Life you word up Artist maybe they can get you an upgrade on your standard? 😉 I have GAS but have to say this is one of the better guitars I own. Good work Artist keep it up.
The Epiphone dot in my opinion sounds terrible. The neck On the one I owned for a bit was too fat for me. I've heard other people at jams play them too. Just don't sound good. But the Sheridan Epiphones sound and play great. Of course they are twice the price. My Epiphone Swingster is just a joy to play.
Im so close to pulling the trigger on this one. But the weight concerns me. Im 49yrs of age with a back that gets a bit sore. I need ergonomics. Must be the thick poly paint must be thick.
American companies leave people no choice. If you want a semi-hollow body you have to look to china. All the other ones are too expensive. Maybe the new Gibson will build one for us poor people.
This is the best guitar review I have ever seen, detailed interesting, HONEST, and its a pleasure watching you love playing that guitar, Rock On Shane..
still prefer the hand made Heritage H535....but the Epiphone is stunning and quality to beat most others. Seeing wires through F holes is a bit of a let down...and something that could be easily fixed.
Digging that axe! Love that binding inside the F holes! I am gonna get me one of those amps! FYI for all of your viewers in the states... I was on the Artist page and saw that they Tweed Amp is available for pre-order with a shipping date of June 20th.(Not an add) I just want one to replace my blues jr! :)
Wish you were able to see how the neck and headstock were constructed Gibson style or Ibanez? In reference to the Gibson angle and often breaking problem at the seam. What no Dr. Ric guitar faces lately?
It's either I charge the company and people will complain it's a paid review or I take the item for free and hopefully re-sell it (if I don't keep it) and pay my bills that way. It's not the smartest business decision but I sleep well at night. 😄
So eziily how else is it supposed to work. Do You expect him to take the time and trouble to box that back up at his own expense and ship it back to China seriously. Lol they don't want the guitar back what are they going to do with a used guitar.
I’m in the look out for a 335 style axe. Thanks to your videos and reviews I’d like to put my hands on a Tokai. I’ll be putting some cash 💵 on the side to in a near future pull the trigger for one of them Japanese clones. Thank you!
Hi Shane. Been following you for the last 3 or 4 years .. maybe more, I dunno .. Great video.. as usual. At 6' 223" I thought you were going into the intro for Yes' "Owner of a Lonely Heart", but no .. pity. Keep up the good work mate!
i have that exact model - artist were REALLY good to me - i love it . Not the most comfortable guitar toi shred on ...but thats not what this is really for anyway
G'day Shane! Just wondering your thoughts on Artist vs Harley Benton? I'm in Melbourne too and so the Thomann shipping is a huge consideration, but I have an HB LP-style guitar I've been pretty happy with. Do Artist make something of equivalent value? Better value?
I found out some news on that today. These aren't the same as HB guitars on the most part. I will do a video coming up covering it as the question pops up a lot :-)
Interesting. I bought a black Firefly semi-hollow on Amazon (US $149), and it's much more like a 339 or Ibanez AS73 than a 335. I put in a roller style bridge and locking tuners (US $45 total), and it now looks, sounds and plays fantastic. Nice to see that you Aussies have access to some of these budget instruments. BTW, this guitar is not available on their US Web site, but their LP copy with gig bag, tuner, strap and cord goes for a ridiculously low US $169!
Probably pretty good... I have two other Artist guitars and they are fine.. Biggest difference I find in cheaper tuners, is not really how well they hold tune but moreso the smoothness and resistance when turning them, especially the lower strings - so a bit more fiddling on cheaper tuners, and not as nice and easy to use as high quality tuners but yeah, in a guitar 4 times the price it's an issue, but not here. At this price it's a small compromise and definitely an area where compromise is 'ok' compared to other factors which are more important I think. Eg. Pickups, neck/action etc. Hope that helps.
I tried one of these out down at Artist in Sydney. It's a sweet guitar. If I didn't already have a couple of semis with a fair amount of 335 in their DNA (if not actual 335s), I'd have bought it in a heartbeat. Artist customer service, products, QC are all excellent.

Love The Reviews...
Very Helpful...
Play Lefty's As Well...
Would Love To Know The Weights...
Thank 💜 You
great job as always shane & yes it sounds awesome !!
Thanks a lot Terry, cheers mate!
Great little set up, Epi Killer Indeed!
Okay, but let's hear it with some alnico ii's? Maybe changing them is too difficult, IDK. Good review, nonetheless.
Great review as always, Shane. What is it like unplugged?
Thanks a lot Rick. It not bad acoustically but it sounds way better plugged in hehe 😄
American companies leave people no choice. If you want a semi-hollow body you have to look to china. All the other ones are too expensive. Maybe the new Gibson will build one for us poor people.
Pleased it also really suitable for jazz. Sounded mellow and crisp
This is the best guitar review I have ever seen, detailed interesting, HONEST, and its a pleasure watching you love playing that guitar, Rock On Shane..
It wont be long before they get a cease and desist letter from Gibson in fact they probably have already received that letter.
What Amp would someone suggest for this guitar for a beginner? Looking to play rock and blues kind of music on a budget.
I got a brown burst 58 from artist which is this guitar but brown burst colour I absolutely love it
still prefer the hand made Heritage H535....but the Epiphone is stunning and quality to beat most others. Seeing wires through F holes is a bit of a let down...and something that could be easily fixed.
The truss rod cover doesn’t look like a condom which is always a good thing. What were Gibson thinking?!
Wow nice 👏
Digging that axe! Love that binding inside the F holes! I am gonna get me one of those amps! FYI for all of your viewers in the states... I was on the Artist page and saw that they Tweed Amp is available for pre-order with a shipping date of June 20th.(Not an add) I just want one to replace my blues jr! :)
Wish you were able to see how the neck and headstock were constructed Gibson style or Ibanez? In reference to the Gibson angle and often breaking problem at the seam. What no Dr. Ric guitar faces lately?
shane, you played great on this. might actually buy a chinese 335... crazy
New sub from New Zealand here cool stuff I've got the black transparent with the tremalo
this thing sounds and looks amazing for $300US
No payment but get's a Guitar for nothing lol Love the Vids though mate keep it up...
I do not care @@guitarocd9984
Oh I thought you did. Okay nevermind then
awesome. I have the artist DS 120 CE acoustic guitar and couldn't be happier, especially for the price I paid.
I’m in the look out for a 335 style axe. Thanks to your videos and reviews I’d like to put my hands on a Tokai. I’ll be putting some cash 💵 on the side to in a near future pull the trigger for one of them Japanese clones. Thank you!
Many but not all newer epiphones tend to be rubbish .Wouldnt take much to kill one
Sounds killer!
The pickguard is the same kidney bean shape as the older Harley Benton ES-335 clones.
Hi Shane. Been following you for the last 3 or 4 years .. maybe more, I dunno .. Great video.. as usual.
At 6' 223" I thought you were going into the intro for Yes' "Owner of a Lonely Heart", but no .. pity. Keep up the good work mate!
Just got one your vid very helpful thanks mate
Oh and great work Shane … love the channel and all the hard work you’ve put into it 👌
I just seen your guitar was ac by Leo funny so was mine ..are you able to do an internation demo
i have that exact model - artist were REALLY good to me - i love it .
Not the most comfortable guitar toi shred on ...but thats not what this is really for anyway
I think it sounded sweet jn your video. I was very impressed, especially considering the price.
where can i buy this model in the us?
that is one sweet sounding guitar, I checked the UK Artist site sadly it's not listed here in the UK,
I want one, can they be ship to Us or MEXICO?
Shane, interesting enuff, at Artist's usa site the 58 is not available.
can´t get the point on trying to beat Epiphone? considering the fact it's just a copy(cool one btw)
The Epiphone is a copy!
Sounded so good i went out and bought one...........
Nice review intheblues sounds great .
When will it be available in the US? I can't find a seller here
Another EPIC intro , love it!!! Sweet riffs!!!
Just got one a lefty and it’s gorgeous
Interesting. I bought a black Firefly semi-hollow on Amazon (US $149), and it's much more like a 339 or Ibanez AS73 than a 335. I put in a roller style bridge and locking tuners (US $45 total), and it now looks, sounds and plays fantastic. Nice to see that you Aussies have access to some of these budget instruments. BTW, this guitar is not available on their US Web site, but their LP copy with gig bag, tuner, strap and cord goes for a ridiculously low US $169!
I’m planning to buy one of these, but how stable are they in tuning.
Nice guitar, it's got some great tones. Great jammin' Shane!
Sound beautiful!!! It have that lovely jazzy vibe to it🙌
Nice one Shane. Keen to see vid comparing Tokai.
advertising, propaganda 13:34 mn, after the amp, the guitar,....
EPIPHONE : BETTER
artist : sound hollow, without personality
If you’re left handed, you can’t get an Epi
@@robertlennox3607 playing the guitar left-handed is nonsense.
Not a good as my grote.
Nice worthwhile review.
That’s blasphemous
I tried one of these out down at Artist in Sydney. It's a sweet guitar. If I didn't already have a couple of semis with a fair amount of 335 in their DNA (if not actual 335s), I'd have bought it in a heartbeat.
Artist customer service, products, QC are all excellent.
I want one! Thanks Shane.
