If I remember right, the only way to get that cape in single player is after unlocking another character. Using a dummy second player just to get it first would help improve the flow some.

It does use Simon's Quest engine actually.
Castlevania engine ? I recognise some sound effects as well, looks like they've done a lot of recycling on this game
I think some sounds came from Castlevania 2: Simon's Quest. And Getsu Fuuma Den.
