The Gator Grip is stripping bits off the bolt heads, & the pins are sticking, because You're using it with an impact driver. There's a warning on the back of the pack, telling you NOT to use the tool with an impact driver.
I am a garage door installer and a lot of old doors have the tracks screwed to the wall with big square headed lags. It works great to remove those. we ruin them all the time because we also use an impact driver. they dont last long but we need to move fast in our business. we just get new ones when the pins get all stuck down.
Oh man, I did a garage installation job a few months ago and it took two of us the entire day to get the install done. I was thinking to myself: I be install guys are faster than this. And I remember those old lag bolts ... we took them out with a ratchet and they took forever.
metaspencer we can take an old door down and have a new one up In an hour. Add 30 min for an opener. That’s on a good job with no unforeseen issues. If you don’t know all the little steps and what order to do them in it can be a nightmare to get it working right.
@@brapperdan woah! I kind of guessed we were spinning our wheels, and having to read all the instructions definitely slowed us down. cool to hear, man!
metaspencer it’s me an another guy and we do everything the same exact way every time. It’s just a bunch of steps . So that way you can be efficient and get faster and faster.
Yes, works great, but the main reason some of those rods are sticking is because you’re using it with an impact drill. If used on a standard drill from the start, you would have much less wear and tear on it.
Impact hits like a hammer over and over and has more driving power less twisting power. Drill spins smoothly and has more control less driving power. Impact is traditionally used on tight nuts
Works great. It took off beyond destroyed U Joint Cap Bolts. I have had mine for 10 years, still going strong. Snap On just game out with weird Sockets that are supposed to do the same job but its a set and $$$$ and are pretty lame. Checked them out on the truck and laughed and told him about this socket. 5-25 bucks and this socket is all you need.
Does it work for stripped bolts? I mainly got it for odd bolts and such but since doing my brakes i wanted to try it on worn bolts but my extractor set came first and let me tell you, every mechanic should own a bolt extractor set for stripped bolts as it works perfectly everytime!😊
I always wondered if they had an attachment for things like screwing in eye bolts and hooks and I finally found it lol. Sucks using a screwdriver or pliers to tighten those
My question to you is the manf does not recommend use with impact tools so since my home improvement tools seems not to include a rachet handle do you think it's OK to use it with my drill driver combo instead do you think it OK as a drill / driver that is not impact rated thoughts please thank you
My question is did you find the gator grip ok for occasional use with the impact driver ps are you going to suggest to me that I use an impact socket adapter thoughts please thank you
As long as you don't over torque it with the impact driver they work great together. But if you hit the gator grip hard with that impact it will deform and be ruined
@@metaspencer I mean I currently have an impact driver I wonder if I should just buy an impact wrench and use an adapter to make the compatible with the impact driver tools? thoughts?
@@Fredengle It depends on what you're using the tool for. If you're putting on lug nuts you need a powerful impact wrench; if you're driving deck screws the impact driver is great. It really depends on the work you do
With entirely rounded bolts, I've only had luck squaring them off with a file and/or cutting a notch in them ... the Gator Grip needs something to grab onto
Oh man, I have really liked the Dewalt. I killed my previous drill, which was a Makita, simply by using to much that it melted down. I have a Dewalt with the hammer drill option, which I use quite a bit. Here's a link to the bare tool version of the impact driver in the video: amzn.to/2oEHaza I also use a Porter Cable drill quite a bit, and it's equally tough ... but cost a lot less!
I NEED PRAYERS! About to try this on a big 18mm bolt on a rounded off engine crank pulley. It fit on there pretty tight just testing it... WD40 soaking in now. I'm saying a prayer. Wondering if an impact wrench will break it? Only 19.99 hmmm... If this doesn't work I'm forced to cut the car body and cur it off with a grinder or pull the engine. And if I'm pulling the engine, its going to be a big to-do because I'll be doing a full engine swap at that point. See where this is going? I have a pretty good feeling here...This thing HAS TO work!
Oh Boy! I hope it works for you! I avoid an impact driver if I can, in these situations, and prefer the longest socket wrench arm that I have: that way I can "feel" the nut move ... if it does. Another option is always to grind or file in some sides on that stripped nut ... might be worth it!
With impact you don't need to block flywheel, so it's definitely better for crank bolts. If bolt is rounded, you can buy special twist socket pretty cheap. This isn't gonna work with impact
Can u fit the head of a welding lead gun in there and weld a nut on it? Lol. Let it cool and bam. Works like a charm. I have this socket and it works great.
its just generally a bad tool, it doesn't matter if you are using it with a impact driver or screw driver, it will get stuck pins, and wear out itself and everything it be used on... but don't worry, soon there will be better alternatives
Its s bad tool. This product was out before computers were out. Another guy tested and gave a different review video on this same similar product and DIDN'T work. Product sucks !
Thank u for the demo me and my partner at work were just talking about this so I searched here and found your demo! Appreciate it man thanks!
They definitely come in handy for certain jobs. Thanks for checking it out!
Thanks... I got it as a present and could not figure out how it would work. You amply showed me how. Bless you!
It can really come in handy :)

Good point, but I like to go FAST!
Doesn’t matter if you only use On stripped stuff already
so you can use it with a ratchet?
@@jasensargent6176 yup
Yes in many cases
I do not believe it was designed to be used with an impact driver...a more appropriate use would be screwdriver with a clutch

Apliance Guru Eric hey could you explain to me impact drill and standard . Sorry if it's dumb question but honestly don't known

In a few key situations, the Gator Grip has been really great to have
@@metaspencer Yep!
Great quick review of this innovative little tool.
It can come in handy, when the pins aren't jammed up :)
@@metaspencer Yeah!
Thanks for the review, very helpful!
When it works, it will certainly get you out of a jam
I’m thinking of getting this for my tool bag on on my motorcycle
I think it's handy to have, as long as you don't expect too much from it. I haven't been super lucky with it on super rusted-up or rounded bolts
It's an excellent tool for emergency bike repairs on the road/trail
Although I'm not sure which brand is toughest
Agreed ... it can come in handy
Can it remove round edged bolts ?
if they're not too rusted in place and there is some edge/corner to grab
I'm guessing this would work great on locking lug nuts for mechanics?
Too much pressure and it falls apart, but good for smaller pressure jobs
Will a "universal socket" work on the five-sided nuts on fire hydrants?
Those nuts are likely too big
Does it work for stripped bolts? I mainly got it for odd bolts and such but since doing my brakes i wanted to try it on worn bolts but my extractor set came first and let me tell you, every mechanic should own a bolt extractor set for stripped bolts as it works perfectly everytime!😊
It depends on two things: how badly they're stripped and how tightly bound up they are
I always wondered if they had an attachment for things like screwing in eye bolts and hooks and I finally found it lol. Sucks using a screwdriver or pliers to tighten those
Yep!
Yeah!

I've used them for all kinds of things and in many ways -- just go slow and apply pressure and they'll often bite pretty well
Very helpful
excellent!
File a flat side on a super rounded bolt and it will work better.
Thanks for the tip!

Will this work on motorcycles nuts and bolts? Im worried if it will wear the nuts and bolts Because of the Giggle it produces .
Giovannie Doldolea once in a while with a stuck or partially stripped nut, it will woRk. But I wouldn't use it all the time
Avoid using this on 8mm bolts on your bike It will strip!
I'm trying to hook up my stove but the Brass Craft is stripped ..can the gator grip help me
It might help, but it won't grab to a round nut. You may need an extractor
@@metaspencer okay thank you
Will this work on a nut that requires deep socket and not a shallow socket
Carlos Garcia ... it really depends on how stuck that nut is. It should be able to reach but may not have the torque
Would this work well taking out an extremely tight rounded bolt ??
With entirely rounded bolts, I've only had luck squaring them off with a file and/or cutting a notch in them ... the Gator Grip needs something to grab onto
About to try this... its 18mm so no other tool was made in that size. Remind to to check in with results. WD40 soaking now.
+tubeyourself ... fingers crossed
@@metaspencer 👍🤞🙏
How well does this work with a 3/8 ratchet and oil pan caps??? I do at least 25-30 oil changes a day and would like to stop having to swap sockets 😂
I'd try it out ... it all depends on the nature of the nut and how much you have to torque it, but it might save you some tiime
I wonder if this works on wheel lock lugs
+Nolan Stewart .... not if they're overly rusted on
