  • In this project I'm showing you how I took out an old, plastic in-wall medicine cabinet and replaced it with gorgeous DIY'd modern custom shelving. Even if you do not have an old medicine cabinet to take out, this makeover will fit within the bathroom (or any room!) wall studs. It's hidden wall storage and such an easy way to turn your wall into a cabinet!

    Since I'm a fan of oak (red oak mostly) the first thing I noticed about this was the wood. I like it, and I also like that you matched the grout color to the tile. Well done.

      @@MakerGray a while back I turned a couple pens out of red oak and finished them with friction polish. Not sure if it's the chemical make-up of the polish I used, or the fact that stuff generates a little bit of heat when you put it on, but the end result was some of the grain darkened while the overall color got lighter. Also got so slick they're a bit tricky to hold on to, but I figure that's because I sanded them to something like 12000 before polishing. Learned my lesson though, and since then I stop sanding at 600 then apply the polish.

    Tore out my medicine cabinet after watching this video. I don’t have the wood cutting tools so I think I will have Home Depot cut the boards . Wish me luck

    Putting that tile in the back of the cabinet was clever. I think you should invest in some dust collection for that fancy tablesaw.

    I’m new at diy and do not yet have the tools or skills for this woodwork. Would it be possible to have my local hardware store that I purchase the wood from make all these cuts for me?

  • @marisabraungart7601

    What was the thickness that you cut the wood down to when re-sawing?

    • @MakerGray
      @MakerGray  4 роки тому

      I want to say it was either 1/4" or 3/8" - not too wide

  • @robertmiller1179
    @robertmiller1179 3 роки тому

    Are the shelves 1/4” or 3/8”?

    • @MakerGray
      @MakerGray  3 роки тому

      I honestly cannot remember. I'm guessing 1/4" but either would work just fine

  • @tmatheson

    I’m no expert but don’t those tiles need grout after you apply them? Where did you get tile you can cut with scissors also? I want that lol.

    • @MakerGray
      @MakerGray  2 роки тому +1

      Yep! I added grout at 5:20. I got the tile at Home Depot.

      @@MakerGray is that the peel and stick tiles? I didn’t know those used grout. Interesting. I guess they’re 3D or something. I’ve seen those. Thanks.

    Fill up the hole with "thick styrofoam" tape the sides, "voila". Cover it with anything, a picture, shelves, a cabinet. Then forget about it, life's too short.
