i’d add that Spinneret getting her power from Peter and then using that same power to help Peter as spider-man is a nice compliment to their married life considering how married couples support each other and become each other’s strength and i think Spinneret compliments this idea nicely
MJ DOES NOT NEED POWERS! If you can’t make mj interesting without powers Then you shouldn’t write her. Spinneratte is good because it gets mj as a character right, before then adding powers.
Yeah in general I hate this trend of making every none powered love interest get turned into a superhero. I know making them superpowered means more action/I enjoy a good superhero couple myself but it’s like their trying to destroy any chance of interaction with none supered people
In my mind giving MJ powers should be to solidify her relationship with Peter. Being Spider-Man causes a lot of bumps in their lives and while MJ probably understands Peter better than any other love interest she's often had a hard time dealing with his "other job". When she gets powers (probably by accident) I'd imagine she try to avoid doing any super heroics until she comes across a situation she just can't ignore thanks to years of Peter's responsibility talks. In doing so MJ finally crosses that last hurdle and even if her powers are only temporary the experience allows her truly accept the challenges Spider-Man will still cause. As for what powers she gets I always found MJ with spider powers a bit lazy. I still have the visual guide that was released years ago and in the section about Peter's identity crisis it has a picture of MJ finding the leather jacket he will use as part of his Ricochet persona. I've always associated her with it because of that and I think giving her some form of super agility or kinetic energy enhancement would be perfect.
A better comparison for the roulette is the H-Dial from DC, which turns the user into a random superhero. What makes that still better than this is that you can't spam it till you get someone who is overpowered.
Something that helps RYV MJ having powers, is that the very word of RYV doesn’t just justify MJ having powers, but makes it necessary. The world lost most of its heroes (minus the X-Men), and for a good deal of time as parents MJ and Peter have gone through incredible lengths to insure the nobody learns that their daughter has powers. Even though they don’t need to hide it anymore, it’s actually realistic to see MJ continue to help protect her family this way. She spent years protecting her daughter from the world that would hurt her daughter, sure Annie can now fight back, but why would MJ stop when she can help fight back?
I really like the idea of Spinneret as Mary Jane’s belief that Peter shouldn’t bear the responsibilities of a hero alone. Since Peter is her husband, they should go through the whole struggle together.
On Jackpot's powers: When Jed Mackay initially wrote them, he made it so that she was stuck with whichever powers she got for a certain period of time. This also wasn't great, but more for the "Black Canary problem" where the audience is just sort of waiting for the nuclear option to go off. Then Wells decided to completely ignore all that, and basically made her Atom Eve. While Bronfmann hasn't been doing a great job for the book, she inherited a mess, so I can't fault her too much.
Honestly I’d argue having her actually STUCK with a power would have atleast been interesting/good. Because if you’re stuck with a power you’d HAVE to make it work for the situation, which would at least showed the characters ingenuity and creativity (look at all of jojo’s bizarre adventure). But this stupid respin addition completely ruins it because now it just become “well I can just have whatever strong power I want whenever” and ruins the idea of basing a superhero around the phrase “jackpot” aka gambling & luck (this is flipping a coin to get heads but you flip it indefinitely till you get the answer you want)
I actually got to meet the voice of Spectacularverse Mary Jane Watson herself: Vanessa Marshall at Comic-Con in Philly 2 weeks ago. After watching this video, I understand that there's a good reason for MJ having powers as spinneret, unlike jackpot, but I personally don't like her having powers in general. That's not what she's supposed to be. This is why I prefer the story line with mayday. Everyone knows she's the best child of peter parker in a spiderman story. And best of all, THAT story doesn't involve MJ getting powers.
Yknow what sucks? You could totally make a powerless MJ book work. Imagine MJ being a reporter or something and acting as sort of Spider-Man recon. You’d get a ground level look at these classic villains that now have much higher stakes. Spider-Man could stop Rhino or the Chameleon in an afternoon, but MJ doesn’t have the luxury of super strength or Spider-Sense. She’d have to evade or combat the villains in her own way. I’d read something like that.
Also that suit drains peters spider powers the more she uses it and then later on she gets the venom symbiot witch is funny cuz it’s like your wife becomes friends with your ex girlfriend
MJ having powers isn’t the problem it’s why she has them. Being Spinnerette to be closer to Peter and help her family works. Jackpots reason…what’s her reason for being a hero?

Decades of story and history and exploration and they boiled her power set down to "lol remember the thing she said when Peter opened the door?" Yeah I learned this lesson the time a saw the issue of her backstory/childhood. It made me fully realize she doesn’t need to have to be a superhero to be interesting, she can have just as much depth & interest without that by just being a good character
I know there’s not much depth to how her powers came about and I hate how their relationship is going right now in 616, but I honestly like this randomize power for MJ. As a former actress (I don’t know if that’s just movie or not), she’s had to adapt to a variety of things, thus I think giving her a power where she shows off her creativity and resourcefulness is a good choice. That’s just me tho
And on the flip side, although I respect Black Cat, in all runs of her story, unless she’s written properly, she puts Spiderman through the wringer, emotionally and physically. Whether with assisting her unwillingly with a crime, lying to him about their relationship, or just getting him into trouble. She’s helpful when they’re on good terms, but most of the time, she’s out for herself and that’s something Spidey doesn’t need

If she needed to wait a short time before each spin, that might have made more sense, even if she had no reason to have powers. Then she at least had to use the power the card dealt her creatively until she had the ability to spin again. Its why Ben 10 getting random forms worked, he needed to learn how to make do with a form he got, over constant changes. That was what made Master Control such a game changer for him. MJ just has a less controlled version of Master Control since she can just spam spins until something useful pops up.

Although I do agree, they need to put a limit on them
And on the flip side, although I respect Black Cat, in all runs of her story, unless she’s written properly, she puts Spiderman through the wringer, emotionally and physically. Whether with assisting her unwillingly with a crime, lying to him about their relationship, or just getting him into trouble. She’s helpful when they’re on good terms, but most of the time, she’s out for herself and that’s something Spidey doesn’t need
A limit would be grand
*reads title before watching video*
.... who?
I can argue carage queen was better than jackpot. Then again that might be due to the fact that I grew up on ultimate spiderman
I hate that they MJ powers in 616 universe because it does not make sense
The writer Celeste Bronfman wanted to write a superhero comic, so Nick Lowe made her available.
Search jackpot and black cat you will find her interview.
All she had written was my little pony books.
Oh damn I never knew. That’s cool
@@LewisFilmsProductions not if you hear her speak, without remorse for assasinating both MJ and Black Cat.
For her its Just o cool nothing can go wrong they are Just characters for us to use.
No respect whatsoever.
@@BoudewijnPietwell, it's kinda true, the next writer could just ignore it, so technically they can do whatever they want
@@Hello-bi1pm Mj is Peters soulmate, his grounding to normal life.
Without this i could easily imagen him beeing in a very dark place.
This whole run has not been fun to read.
And will get even worse soon after hé will get turned into the spider goblin.
This is a complete and utter coruption of what Stan Lee invisioned for our hero.
If hé were alive still hé would have protested against this as much as we are now.
Maybe even harder.
Speaking of Ben 10 what did you think about Kevin’s backstory especially with the Rooters?
Kevin’s backstory is cool
@@LewisFilmsProductionsespecially the Rooters that has divided the fan base?
Jackpot costume design is off to me 🤷
Hey Lewis you should do a review on Mayday Parker the amazing Spider-Girl comics.
Already have!
I really like her as spinnerette, anyone else miss Renew your vows? Bc i sure do
I do
Spinneret is my favourite 😊
I wish we got her instead of jackpot
She’s great
Well correction are more so of like wanting to protect her husband and her child after living in the world where a tyranny ruled had killed most of the heroes and Peter could have stopped the tyranny but fought victim to save his wife and daughter so Mary Jane took the technology and realized like hey she can protect her family too and make sure both of them are safe so that's another reason why I spin Iraq is better than jackpot because they gave them deep story behind reason why she decided to get powers and it wasn't just for the hell of it You know what I'm saying I don't even understand what they're doing with Mary j Watson in the main continuity I don't like her having powers at the kids dumb I want her to be the wife of Spider-Man and raise the children that's what I want for Mary Jane Watson I don't need her to be jackpot or anything honestly there's been plenty of stories where Mary Jane Watson used her wits her brains to get out of situations so her having powers and then the jackpot power where she just gets to do whatever she wants to makes her so boring
Spinertte > Jackpot
Story, narrative & character growth are so important
absolutely
If she needed to wait a short time before each spin, that might have made more sense, even if she had no reason to have powers. Then she at least had to use the power the card dealt her creatively until she had the ability to spin again. Its why Ben 10 getting random forms worked, he needed to learn how to make do with a form he got, over constant changes. That was what made Master Control such a game changer for him. MJ just has a less controlled version of Master Control since she can just spam spins until something useful pops up.
Taking a shot in the dark to guess the difference is that Spinneret's powers are dependent on Peter's charity, and not Anything inherent to MJ
"Spinneret has powers for the sake of supporting her husband, Jackpot doesn't have a reason to have powers at all."
Called it.
Is that a problem?
If Paul doesn't exist
Hey LewisFilms, working on a fanfic with a marvel universe where Mary Jane was bitten by the same radioactive spider as Peter. This MJ is based off of the one from the original 616 run before One More Day. MJ doesn’t start of as a superhero. But she does become one eventually. I was wondering if you had any ideas why Mary Jane would become a hero if she was bitten by the radioactive spider too? I want to make it work like Renew Your Vows, not Jackpot.
That’s a very good idea. Since this is a “what if” scenario, you don’t have to worry about whether she “needs powers or not” since it’ll be a completely different story. Just go with whatever you feel like you want to write!
once heard that MJ was supost to be the og Jackpot beacause of her red hair
but I don´t know if it was headcanon or fan idea or offical beacause there is no evidence or prof of it
but kinda shame that they us MJs powers so bad would be interessting to see her strugle with the wrong power for a situation
Red Sonja possessing her body for a bit was awesome too.
I don't really like mj having powers as she is supposed to represent Peter's normal live outside the superhero stuff. Though if she was to get powers the spinneret storyline is the way to do it.
Absolutely agree
Maybe it’s because of Paul?
I mean Paul doesn’t help haha 😂😂
@@LewisFilmsProductionsyes and this is why we hate her having powers because of him as the reason why we don’t like is because he didn’t earned anything that everything was handed to him like he is a Gary Stu
I want mj to become spinneret in Spider-Man 3
That would be cool, although we already have Cindy Moon
@@LewisFilmsProductions no what I mean is she is able to web an enemy and take them out and disguise herself and swing around or drive around with her motorcycle to quickly make a getaway from enemies when you do stealth missions
@@LewisFilmsProductions I also really want to see flash become agent venom and be playable and has military weapons like rifles
@@LewisFilmsProductionsI also really love spinneret costume
I also think spinneret could work in the ultimate comics
