Thank you for bringing up this even more egregious act committed by Gov Noem. It is tragic that her political behavior and choices are horrendous and it’s insane that it took a her conversation caused by her self revealed story of killing her puppy. It is important to remember that animal cruelty is always a major red flag that an individual is probably going to escalate to cruelty and inhumanity to other humans. Anyway, thank you again for your comment. I will definitely try to find more information on her treatment of indigenous people.

When my dog back in the 70’s killed my neighbors chicken, I trained her not to ever do it again. She was 14 months old. She was a great dog and lived 18 years. She ended up guarding all the animals on my farm including free range chickens.

The books by the M😢onks of New Skeet are a super great resource for anyone with dogs. Those books saved my 1st dog (we were kicked out of doggy school due to his dog aggressive behavior & my inexperience with training dogs - those very nice trainers - trained me every week after their regular class ❤) that dog became an exceptionally great pet & a very beloved member of my neighborhood.
I learned so much from the trainers & from reading every Monks of New Skeet training book I could find.

Our 18 year old dog passed away yesterday. To know Noem felt it was fine to shoot her dog makes me sick.
She let Cricket , an energetic pheasant chasing puppy off leash around a flock of chickens. An irresponsible really dumb thing to do. She was embarrassed by the event, and she made Cricket into the scapegoat.

In addition to being unable to control her temper, she’s extremely lazy! Animals require maintenance and training. She neglected to train that dog and then got mad at the dog because he didn’t do what she wanted. She didn’t neuter that goat then decided to kill it because it stank and did what goats do. Pure laziness on her part and then she’s proud enough to brag about it. Yep lazy and stupid. A dangerous combination!

It not only worries me that she would kill her own dog under these circumstances, but that she thought it would increase her political appeal to brag about it. And let's not be circumspect - she IS BRAGGING, because there is no other reason to put a story like that in a book she wrote about herself.
But on top of all that, what is absolutely frightening is that there are people out there who would find her more politically appealing because of this. This is what scares me - and nauseates me - the most.
I'm pretty conservative, and am absolutely horrified.

They did a test where they placed fake animals on the side of the road and watched. They found that many people move to hit the animals on purpose. 80% of them were oversized, pickup truck drivers with Republican stickers. Some of them were flagged down and interviewed. The number one story they all came up with was that they were doing the poor animal a favor by ending them quickly before they are only wounded by someone else. The number two story was they thought it was funny. Those are her voters and they are shockingly numerous.
The dog didn't fail her, she failed her dog. She didn't know how to train her dog and she took it out on Cricket. This is someone who is governing. Way to go South Dakota! Are you going to vote for her again?

@@pocketphrog1777 I think if they can say the dog is beyond help, then I'd say they would euthenise. I think it's getting better here with greyhounds though. There are a number of greyhound rescue organisations. I have friends who have ex racing dogs now as part of their families.
They made it (briefly) illegal to race greyhounds here, but unfortunately the opposition must have a lot of money and influence because the ban ultimately only lasted a few months. I sincerely hope one day it will be permanently banned.

Pretending Noem as a young person enjoying killing animals (not just one) is outweighed by an industry acknowledged as cruel (82% of Australians want greyhound racing banned, currently only banned in ACT), is a logic fail. She executed a puppy because she was pissed and embarrassed. Then while still enraged, went and got her goat that she didn't like (it smelled and was not castrated) shot it once didn't kill it, went and got another bullet while it suffered then killed it as well. This is not a story of doing hard things, or in anyway commendable for a leader, it is psychopathic and despicable. BTW it does not matter that this was 20 years ago, she put it in her book because she thought it would play well to her base. That is terrifying.

Bravo. Thank you. I have had dogs all my life (I am 75) and have used good dog trainers many times. Gov. Noem's story about her dog horrified me and I hope that no one in this country thinks it's a solution to dog problems. My dogs are my constant companions and the joys of my life.

A large breed dog at 14 months can absolutely still be “puppy-like.” We’ve had Australian Shepherds for many years, and they’re a little bit puppy-like until they’re about 3 years old. This is so disgusting. She could have re-homed the dog if she couldn’t handle or train him. Thank you for speaking about this. I found your comments about dogs very touching. And true.

Looks like it didn't work. She was at a Mar-a-Lago fundraiser yesterday with Trump and a bunch of other Republican politicians, but left before photos were taken. An event in Colorado where she had long been scheduled to speak was canceled last week due to threats. Who knew bragging about shooting a puppy would make you a social pariah even among Republicans?

I doubt that Ms Noem thought this would make her look "cute." I think she was trying to show that she could be unsentimental and make tough decisions, even when the circumstances were ugly. She may have been partially right about this and misjudged the percentage of people who might respond favorably to the message. I think she also failed to appreciate the breadth and depth of outrage this story would inspire as well as the lack of interest there would be in defending her. Additional note: the leader of the MAGA cult (whom she has been trying to impress) has made it very clear that he thinks dogs are disgusting, filthy, worthless creatures. One of his most frequent insulting comments is to say: "- like a dog."

That said, most people support shooting innocent animals in the head--they just do it vicariously and pay slaughterhouse workers to use the captive bolt gun. We humans don't need to eat other animals (in fact, vegans live on average 6♀️ to 10♂️years longer than carnists). And innocent animals do NOT deserve to be incarcerated, tortured, branded, castrated, and have their teeth and other body parts cut off (all without anesthesia), then killed at a fraction of their normal lifespans--many dismembered while still fully conscious--just for the pleasure of human taste buds. 😢

I am not a dog trainer, but had no problem teaching my pit bull not to kill our free roaming chickens. She learned to protect them from predators. Best dog I ever had.
I adopted my pitbull from a shelter when she was 6 years old. She saw a chicken for the 1st time that ran out of the bushes at a truck stop. They came face to face. My pitbull's head craned forward with her eyes wide and her mouth open with a "what the h is that" look. The chicken began clucking and my dog got a highly amused look on her face. Not once did she try to hurt the chicken

This was a purebred dog, presumably from a working line.
There isn't a reputable breeder of such dogs on the planet that would not drop absolutely everything they are doing and drive for 12 hours through four states to pick up a dog that wasn't working out for a client.
She didn't do this because she had to. She did it because she wanted to. She did it because she was embarrassed and couldn't take responsibility herself. She is not the sort of person who should have power over anyone or anything.

We adopted an "untrainable" adult dog with a high prey drive (not a pit bull). Guess what happened? We managed to train her to not attack other animals. We were able to leash train her. Within a year we got her to the point that she no longer pulled on a leash and could be around other dogs with supervision. Since she'd been traumatized prior to us adopting her, we still had to continue to train consistently and reinforce good behavior. We did it with treats and love, not with violence.
Noem is just a lazy, self-serving, sub-human monster who got herself a dog with a high prey drive, didn't bother to either train it, or have an expert train her. Instead, she allowed her over-inflated ego to take over and a dog -- AND a goat! -- ended up dead at her hands, intentionally.
This woman should be nowhere near any leadership position.
When living in rural Oklahoma we ended up getting a dog from a neighbor who found it wasn't going to work as a hunting dog. This dog wasn't terribly bright and was very timid. But he sure loved us kids. He was the sweetest dog ever.

If you can afford hunting gear, you can afford a trainer. You have to drop your ego and admit you need help instead of blaming an animal. Personal responsibility means admitting you don’t know what you’re doing and correcting yourself.

My aunt and uncle spent close to 30k training their Chesapeake Bay retriever over years. He was the best dog ever. But gawd forbid she forget about training correctly. And goats smell especially male goats they piss on their beards and get possessive around female goats it's the way they are.

Remember she also had a 3+ years affair with Cory lewandowski and hasn't taken responsibility for that yet either, and the stink with her daughter being given her real estate license with out having to do the work after momma called in the licensing board head and told her to just give it to her. Why simple dog training slipped her mind.

As a dog trainer, I totally agree with your comments. She should be charged with animal cruelty. Her excuse of “farm life is different” Is bulls**t. I grew up in farmland. Cruelty is inexcusable and not “farm life”. This woman is an insensitive nut job & should not hold power.

Never forget, as soon as she was done with the dog, she went and got the goat and killed it at the same time because she didn't like it. She tells this in the book also. Not only did she kill it, she wasn't even responsible and the goat suffered until it died before she could get another shell from her vehicle. She wounded it first. She's not fit for animal ownership of any kind. She should be prosecuted and banned from owning animals. SD law states this is a felony.
Apparently the only shame she felt was that she is a bad shot.

You could get snapped at, but I'd find it really strange if a dog tried to maul a grown person in this situation. If that did happen, I'd be seriously concerned about how that dog was raised. There are so many points in and before this story where that woman failed to appropriately handle her dog. This is not just a dog that went berserk. It was bad training and handling. The bottom line here was that she was incompetent. And then she got mad that she was incompetent. So she killed a bird dog for killing birds.

Thank you so much for your wise and, more importantly, compassionate counsel. My family owned a bird dog that had been shot at by her owner, attempting to train her to hunt. The dog hid in a drainage culvert on our property. My mother was able to coax her out of hiding, but she remained afraid of males her entire life. I often wished we had sought a proper trainer who may have been able to help her overcome her damaged emotions and lead a happier life. Thank you for recognizing dogs as precious gifts of God worthy of our care and respect.

She went home and killed her goat, too. Later she killed 3 horses. My first German Shepherd had an owner who brought her to a vet to be put down as untrainable! The vet refused. I was her 4th owner. She was 110 lbs. of love, and still puppy like at 2 years old. She needed some training, and lots of love. She spent 10 years with me, and I fell in love with the breed. She was a terrific dog! I loved her dearly! She even saved my life more than once! I think that woman is a disgrace, and should be banned from having animals! Thank you for your post!

While not a "professional" I have spent most of my 78+ years of life with animals -- dogs, horses, even a cat (one, not all). 99.999% of all animal training "issues" are a human training failing. She murdered a dog and a goat for no reason but her own ego.
