      Doesn't it make you wonder how the hell Tagalog (a northern regional dialect) replaced Spanish (the national lingua franca used in Luzon, Visayas, and Mindanao)? This is why Filipinos need to relearn Spanish . . . in order to know their real history. What has been fed to the Filipinos through the education system is nothing but obsolete propaganda.

    Its beautiful in Tagalog. Its very incendiary in Spanish.
    General Alejandrino was obviously livid at the betrayal calling the Americans (Anglo-saxons) traitors and thieves. Remember, the war was still going on when it was written.
    In Bayan Ko, its more tame in that it just mentions dayuhan which could apply to the Spaniards, Americans, and Japanese.
    As for why it was in Spanish, because Spanish was the lingua franca in the Philippines at this time compared with other languages. All formally educated people in the Philippines spoke Spanish (the only language for formal education at that time). All the important people spoke Spanish.
    Why not in Tagalog. The idea of Tagalog being a national language only came about in the 1940s, and instituted in late 1950s. Non-Tagalog Filipinos would have been offended. Plus, as Kirby mentioned, he wasn't even Tagalog.

    mabuhay ka ! Freddie Aguilar made his own version of Bayan Ko since September 1979 and became a hit during those dark years of Martial Law. It was only after the assassination of the opposition leader Sen. Ninoy Aquino that this was used during his day -long funeral march , countless protest rallies till the world famous EDSA People Power that toppled a dictator Marcos. BUT a few months after the EDSA people Power I became apart of the movement called BAKASNAMIN for BAYAN KO As a SECOND NATIONAL ANTHEM .we were a handful but were trying to have it a second national anthem as this song was used and stirred the hearts of the nation after the murder of Sen. Benigno AQUINO IN AUGUST 21 1983 TO THE 3 DAY PEOPLE FEB 22-15 1986. we made a signature campaign and conducted symposiums.We were on TV and radio and an article at Manila Time Magazine October 1986 for some months but I don't know why some major members suddenly stopped . the brains behind it were fork singer and song writers Coritha Avelino and Erick Macabeo, others were young college instructors me but teaching at University of Santo Tomas, Josephine Aguilar, Flavio Maria "Bingo" Guerrero , the late Noel Pinto and three others

    Ganoon din ang 'Lupang Hinirang'.
    The younger generation, remember that before Tagalog was established in the National Curriculum, when the English language was a new arrival, Spanish was the unifying language of resistance to colonial rule both against the Spanish Empire and the US at a time when ethnic rivalry was embedded in our psyche. A trait used by the Spaniards to control the Islands for over 3 centuries. With the learning of this language, began the formation of the Filipino identity as opposed to Tagalog, Kapampangan, Visayan etc. Regardless of myths taught in schools today (i.e. Lapu-Lapu fought for Mactan, no Philippines yet; Silang fought for an independent Ilocos, not the archipelago. So are not 'national' but regional heroes. The real Filipino Nationalists were yet to come in the 19th C.) Some of the most profound and patriotic notions of being Filipino and the Philippines was expressed in this language.

    Can you do a video on the indigenous groups from the Philippines? Like the Aeta/"Negritoes" (I read that this term is derogatory, meaning "little black person", and was given to many native peoples by the Spanish)? What is the most appropriate way to address these different groups?

    • @goodaimshield1115
      @goodaimshield1115 4 роки тому +7

      It is not necessary derogatory, it's just descriptive. They were dark (obviously not black, Spaniards refered to their skin colour, not race), and since Spaniards didn't know who they were, they just called them like that. The ending -ito can mean small, but it is also use to express endearment. If the term meant anything, would be Spanish parternalism, since Spaniards fo the 16th century thought of native people as "children", because they considered they ignore so many things. So it could actually be derogatory, but not in a rude way, let's say it like that. Though I think it was just descriptive.

      Macabebe ay isa lamang pong municipio ng provincia ng Pampanga...at hindi nito nirerepresenta ang kabuuan ng lalawigan, hindi po lahat ng Kapampangan ay Macabebe...Paki tama po ang maling kaisipan na ito dahil ang ganitong uri ng ng pahayag ay nagdiriin ng descriminacion.....marami pong kapampangan ang humawak ng armas at nakipagdigma at namatay alang alang sa ngalan ng kalayaan ng bayang Filipinas.....

      Bayan Ko", originally titled Nuestra Patria in Spanish (usually referred to in English as "My Country") is one of the most recognizable patriotic songs of the Philippines. It was written in Spanish by the Revolutionary general José Alejandrino in light of the Philippine-American War and subsequent American occupation, and translated into Tagalog some three decades later by the poet José Corazón de Jesús.
