- Members of the Minor High School band and parents hold a press conference to give their reaction to their band director, Johnny Mims, being tazed and arrested by Birmingham Police officers.
Did any of you listen to these ladies? They stated BPD was aggressive from the band arriving to the stadium. PLEASE pay attention before commenting.
Three hours ago I consulted a member of the North Carolina Bandmasters Association (a division of the North Carolina Association of Educators (NCAE). She agreed that the proper procedure if asked to stop playing post game is to finish out the song and then begin the coordinated exit.
People are completely missing the point. IT IS IMPOSSIBLE TO IMMEDIATELY STOP AND EXIT when it comes high school bands at football games. Moreover, she said that if an immediate exit is required due to an emergency all instruments and equipment are to be left behind. Then, once the stadium is deemed safe students and staff return into the stands to gather instruments and equipment.
That might be relevant if this happened in North Carolina.
@@Solo-Road Band directors are trained the same nationwide. There's nothing special about how marching band is done in Alabama.

I was in High School Band and I was a Band Booster Officer for 15 years....Bandsmen CAN stop playing immediately ,and exit the stands....where in heaven do you get the idea it is "HARD" make a band stop playing ??!! hahahahaha ! Dumb-ass comment on you ,mandelastamm !!! hahahahahahahaha !!!
the fact that that you said it's impossible for a band to stop playing immediately makes your entire comment suspect.
This is not how a police department creates trust with teenagers whom they are there to serve and protect, not terrorize.

@@piper998877 They were there, per school request because of past violence at games! And 5th quarters were banned because of past violence! So they had every right to stop anything that might delay the clearing of the stadium!

Boorish band director should have had the sense and maturity to say something like we’re just a minute and a half from the end of the piece. Can’t we let the kids finish out the number? He probably would have got an OK and even applause from the cops at the end. Instead he starts getting physical and yelling “get out of my face”. He’s less mature than the students and shouldn’t be teaching. No wonder the schools are turning out such a poor product when there’s jerks like this as their example. Stay tuned for part 2 where boor and his shyster sue the taxpayers, the stadium, the school, every officer, and whatever else they can concoct. The shyster’s script will be this artist and educator was targeted because of racism.

@@jayabee The way he said it was more ‘get out of my face, I’m gonna finish’. Like I suggested, had he said it like ‘can’t we let the kids finish their last number? They worked hard practicing it’, I’m 100% sure he would have got the OK. Instead he goes boorish and childish big time. He really shouldn’t be in charge of teenage students unless the course is learning how not to behave. Is “diversity” or “equity” or some other check the box racial qualification like Hitler’s Nazis used, behind his employment by the school district?
So... what was wrong with the kids playing music a few minutes after the football game outside at the football field and if you noticed the cheerleaders were still dancing and cheering. ITS A SCHOOL FOOTBALL FIELD... AND... AND... that was really a great and safe action for the well being of the kids on the field to CUT THE LIGHTS OFF not thinking that there easily could have been someone waiting to snatch up one of those kids in the dark. Kids easily could have fallen carrying band instruments down the bleachers. Then, to make matters worse, the police maced several of the students on the school bus getting ready to leave. The police are suppose to protect and serve, kind of hard for them to be doing that while harassing a band director and some kids playing music.. I hope that band director sues the sh!yte out of the police department and some police need to be fired. This is coming from an ex law enforcement officer with 16 yrs on the job.

Finishing their final number is probably what would have happened if immature boorish director had said something like ‘we’re less than two minutes from the end. Can’t we let the kids finish this last number?’. He likely would have even gotten applause from the officers. Instead he goes ghetto with his arms and “get out of my face” Bu££$hi+. Poor example for students. He really shouldn’t be teaching after this. From my high school days and having raised a family, I’ve played in and watched in many fields or stadiums. The far overhead banks of floodlights go out after games but the ground level lights and lights in the grandstand throughout the stadium and the parking areas stay on. Walkways, restrooms, bleachers, etc. stay well lit. The whole place doesn’t turn pitch black or even dark.

I thought I was the only one who knows this is the ultimate factor in this case, the cops feel they can be disrespectful and them people must listen to there demands, that teacher need to sue them.

And that's what is hard to get people to comprehend. The officers can ask them to stop, but that's a request since it is not based in law. People think that just because an officer gives an order, it must be followed.

When you break the rules, there are consequences. Band director just had to learn the hard way that is is accountable for his poor choices.
@@Solo-Road I was in the Band in Grade school Normally the Band Director has to finish the set of music being played, It is sad that today Band directors can't finish the set and kids just can't be kids, what the Police did was totally unnecessary

That Band Director was VERY disrespectful and the video showed that. Everyone wants to go home after the game and that's the way it should be.This isn't a PARTY.!
You don't understand. What they were doing was agreed upon in advance. Both schools' bands were playing. The police had no authority to stop them. No Birmingham City Schools administrators directed the band directors or police to stop the music.

The School District's statement also didn't admit or mention that students were pepper sprayed while on the bus!!!!

I hope the school had the sense to release a statement to students and their parents that their adminitsration does not condone the behavior of the band director. Otherwise, these kids that support him will think he acted appropriately and they will do the same if confronted by police.

You must have missed the recording on the bodycam footage where he swung at a cop, that doesn't sound non-violent to me. You also must have missed the part where other adults were having to hold him back because they knew he was in the wrong. This man previously resigned from a teaching position for losing his tempter in front of students among other things. He got what he deserved.

Band leader needs to be fired. He disrespected authority. This teaches kids to be disrespectful. Stop means stop. He’s dead wrong. Hope his attorneys cost him a bunch of money. There are rules, bus times, maybe light times, field times, and over time police times. Gotta go when told.

@@Lukenukem8732 The kids on the bus may have been maced too. And several were injured when they tried to get off the bus. One child had an asthma attack and one hit her head when she fell getting off.

The Band Director was a horrible example for those young people that night... hopefully he started acting right after jail. Whether or not he swung on an officer or not, he was not compliant and was aggressively physically resisting lawful orders from LEOs. No doubt that some of those students will hate cops because of this ignorant behavior and some might even put themselves in danger acting the same way one day. Hopefully he thought about it and acted like a man & mentor and took responsibility for his actions afterward or he shouldn't be in the school system any longer. The rule to not play after the game ended was a safety order. He chose to willingly defy that order and put the remaining attendees, including his band students in potential danger. Thee was more to it than some school administrator just wanting to go home ASAP after the game. He knew what he was doing and what he was doing was wrong to the point of at least a suspension from work. The chief responsibility of any school faculty member is the safety of the students. It would be interesting to hear why he willingly chose to do this, outside of TV coverage. He plays docile victim now. He caused all of it. We've seen this all before, shameful... just shameful.
