Actually they can be very dangerous if they're startled, and they are easily startled. And keep away from even tame males if they are in must. (Indicated by fluid leaking down side of their head.) I've encountered them in the wild. We were allowed to get within meters of white rhinos on foot, (they can be dangerous too, but the guide knew to study their body language.) but with the wild elephants we had to stay in the vehicle. We may have been okay, but the guide wasn't taking that chance. But, yes if they're unthreatened and it's not mating season and you keep your distance, you should be okay.
Have seen white rhinos in Kalahari in Namibia and elephants in Etosha in Namibia. Both are so cool but that’s true they are very dangerous. Especially elephants, white rhinos are considered to be more dangerous than they really are, they are relaxed. But African elephants especially the bulls are insane. They exhibit such a power. And if they become aggressive they are really dangerous. I know that in India they put the bull elephants in Musth into chains and don’t let them drink or eat to make the musth period shorter. But it sometimes makes their behaviour worse and sadly the elephants don’t die rarely from these methods. But an elephant in musth is so dangerous for other animals or humans that it’s no option to let one of them in proximity to other animals or humans otherwise it will kill or violent humans or animals or they will do colossal damage and chaos
