I was mildly curious what the damage numbers would have been there against a megatank honestly after seeing over 220 and with megatanks having ridiculous defense. Wouldn't have surprised me if it was a oneshot on a megatank there with the city bonus too being so damn amped up with Kindle SCOP.

Wow this makes me really happy. Rip is one of my most respected players, and to see him representing transport, ranged and actually new tactics is a breath of fresh air. Seems like the competitve scene will have to stop being stagnant to be able to catch up to him.
Its crazy to reach 1800. At such high ratings, the players you fight know how to play, what to do and they have solid gameplay. Taking consistent wins against highly skilled players like that is crazy.
Keep in mind elo inflation, the best players in the world were in the upper 1400s before the site popularity exploded a few years ago. All those fresh 800 elo accounts getting farmed for points has added a ton of elo into the system and it gradually makes its way to the top. I don't in any way mean to diminish the accomplishments of the top players, but I personally doubt there's much if any difference in skill between an 1800 player today and a 1500 player in 2020.

Opening APC as Kindle is such a genius move. Kindle units are already hard to dislodge, even though she doesn't give extra defence. Even if the opponent take out the capping infantry, a unit nearby can easily counter, and because it's fog, who knows if that's the case.
I know absolutely nothing abuout advance wars. This was the first bit of gameplay I've ever seen of it, but it was still super interesting with the commentary. I think you strike a good balance of being informative enough that even a complete stranger to the series has some idea of what's going on, without being overly detailed in explanations to the point of boring veterans and people already familiar with the series. There's a lot of stuff I don't understand obviously, but you provided enough framework that I could enjoy the spectacle. All I know is that high society play was nuts. Was Rip's character considered not top tier or something before the buff? Or just their super not the greatest? Seemed like something that was completely unexpected by the opposing player, but even if it was expected, I don't know how you deal with every single unit of yours getting one shot on the enemy's turn
To give you a bit of an explanation... High Society (Kindle's super power) gives bonus damage to all units based on how many properties Kindle owns. Before the "buff" (a fix, really), laboratories and communication towers (so 3 properties in this case) were not counted, because they don't provide any income and the web version of the game likely used that as a basis. On the cartridge game, and now on the web game, these properties are counted and give a few % bonus damage, hence the buff (though 24 to 27 in our case isn't that big, it can make a difference in some edge cases). Before, that power was barely used, because the regular power (3HP of damage to every enemy unit that is on a property) was usually more cost-effective. Whether the buff really matters or this especially skilled player recognised potential where everyone else saw a sub-optimal power, I cannot say. At least players think the change matters or Kindle wouldn't have been moved up a tier (if I got that part right). She still isn't top tier, by the way. T3, worth of a T2 according to Mangs in another comment. There are much, much scarier things than some units getting one-shot every so often.
@@lasselen9448 Even without the buff, I'd say that it would be a good idea to save up for high society as Kindle against Andy. Unless Urban Blight allows you to get KOs on units on cities by doing the 3 damage and then attacking, Andy will just heal the damage immediately. All Urban Blight is doing at that point is causing 2 HP worth of damage in repair funds to everything. Meanwhile, High Society allows you to score OHKOs and effectively remove Andy's SCOP. You can't repair things if they're dead, after all.
That's why Mangs is, imo, the best Advance Wars commentator. He keeps his commentary snappy and accessible while still getting into the minds of the players enough for those more exoerienced with the game to get value out of it. I love the rest of the AW community on UA-cam, but I think Mangs is the best overall package for commentary. (Mangs with Deejus as co-commentators for a live match would be amazing)
It's a simple game to learn but with a surprising amount of depth! The ROMs of AW1 and 2 are easy to find online and play with a GBA emulator - well worth a go if this looked interesting to you
Units having 9HP with any chip damage could have drastic implications. For example, it would deal a severe blow to Lash considering that one of her greatest perks is that capping HQ with prime tactics is nearly unstoppable due to her 90 percent defense. Now instead of stopping a Lash HQ cap by finding 1 damage, you only need to find 0.1 damage.
@@control9lcme I am pretty sure the AWBW dev want 100% cart accuracy over competitiveness (such as not removing luck damage to reduce unfairness, not buffing Naval units and Missile stat instead have the mapmakers do it without making the map competitively unviable, etc.) so that won't happen lol.
Hey Mangs, I know this comment has nothing to do with the video, but I just finished my third playthrough of Andaron Saga (one on Hard Mode and two on Lunatic Mode) and I really, really enjoyed it. As you have said yourself, you can skip a bad story, but not a bad gameplay, and the gameplay was awesome. I love the FE4 and FE5 elements, like the escape chapters, the reinforcements, the way Jakka was actually rescuing Baudimon when they were escaping prison, etc. I also really enjoyed how enemy characters actually change colours depending from which faction they are from and how playable characters unlock new weapon type possibilities on supports and I actually used Runa with both anima and dark magic in my second playthrough. Ultimately, I think Aylanda should have remained dead, but the story is still good and better than all the Fire Emblem games for the Game Boy, at least in my opinion. Thanks a lot for creating it alongside other developers.
Going back to that old match, I wouldn't say Akasha misplayed. I think rip's build order gave him a small advantage that grew over the course of the game.
Units showing 9HP when they take chip damage would not make much sense. Though the actual HP of the unit are based on 100. The shown HP from 1 to 10 determines the attack power of the unit. So, it would mean a 1hp infantry could take 10% attack power from a 10hp megatank by sacrificing itself on it.
it also used to be that high society didn't get bonusses by factories airports docks and the HQ. it ain't just labs and comtowers. in the past kindle only got bonusses from reg cities. if it was just labs and comtowers this buff wouldn't be as huge. so in other words instead of 27 cities number would have been closer to 20 cities that would work for the bonus.
Old High Society only counted cities and HQs, now it's buffed to count all types of properties (missile silo is not a property) like how it was in AWDS.
Just wanted to say, i'm absolutely loving the usage of the OST from the unreleased Genesis port of Time Trax. (And i think some Plok OST is in here too?) Either way, these badass soundtracks make these replays even better!
I'd just like to point out that Grond³ has a Win/Loss ratio of 3,57... while rip has a Win/Loss ratio of *_8,24._* I've played multiplayer FPS games for over 14 years now and the best ratio I've ever had in Kills/Deaths is somewhere around 5 to 6; an 8:1 ratio by itself is just *_utterly asinine_* -- to say nothing of one involving wins vs losses on some of the longest drawn-out matches ever.

Not knowing about kindle's buff is how i lost a (low division) final just recently as andy... so many units oneshot that i was expecting to survive for a super of my own.

Rip appears to be using a combined arms strategy. If the meta of Advance Wars is to *_not_* perform combined arms strikes then I could see why rip would rise quickly.
Even without this game as a reference, Kindle should move up a tier in fog. I do not understand the logic in her remaining there in fog... if anything, she is worse because it's already hard to fight contested cities and walls, how about one with Kindle's D2D lol There were people saying she's not that strong but people are picking her in T2 standard now and she still winning a decent amount of games. The Kindle bias is almost as strong as her lmao
Original is a little rough, but I got through it, with a few hiccups. If you want to be challenged, and I mean it, since AI absolutely cheats, then go for the original Advance Wars (for gameboy advance). If you want a game that's a little more fair and has more variety, go for advance wars 2. You won't miss out on the story anyway and I bet you'll prefer its gameplay and mechanics. I mean you have a choice between the same three commanders for the entire game basically whereas you have a lot more choice in the sequel. Still, the first one can be really fun if you want a bigger challenge but you can just play it after the sequel, even though it might lack some mechanics that you'll get used to in the second title.

I've only ever heard of one cheater who was able to make a plugin that bypassed the fog of war mechanic, but he was quickly discovered and booted from the side and the devs later found out how to make sure to counter such plugins. Since then I've heard nothing about it.

Unlikely. I ain't no expert, just some very basic knowledge, so take it with a grain of salt. AW is a fairly interesting game to make an AI for, as it is turn based with discrete actions, which works well for AI training. AWBW also has a lot of match data, which can provide some pre-training data as well. Ultimately, the game has pretty ginormous complexity challenge still: 1. CO powers. There's a lot of potential match ups with complex CO power interactions. 2. Luck damage. Increases training variance and training time/data requirements. 3. Amount of unit match-ups and terrain types - complexity for the model to learn the rules. 4. Fog. Also classifiable as hidden markov model. I'm not qualified enough to say how much more complex would it make the training process, but it adds an extra level of complexity to the training algorithm. The amount of compute and expertise you'd need to get an AW AI to a human level isn't that simple.

Having HP visible in scale of 1-100 at least for unit owner would be nice though, without changing the way damage/cap is calculated.

I beat a guy who beat Rip in a tournament practice match once. I'm now realizing that might be my greatest accomplishment in AWBW.
Remember old High Society only granted 3% attack per citie or HQ. So, no base, airport, comm tower or lab granted more attack.

Rip appears to be using a combined arms strategy. If the meta of Advance Wars is to *_not_* perform combined arms strikes then I could see why rip would rise quickly.

Even without this game as a reference, Kindle should move up a tier in fog. I do not understand the logic in her remaining there in fog... if anything, she is worse because it's already hard to fight contested cities and walls, how about one with Kindle's D2D lol There were people saying she's not that strong but people are picking her in T2 standard now and she still winning a decent amount of games. The Kindle bias is almost as strong as her lmao

Original is a little rough, but I got through it, with a few hiccups. If you want to be challenged, and I mean it, since AI absolutely cheats, then go for the original Advance Wars (for gameboy advance). If you want a game that's a little more fair and has more variety, go for advance wars 2. You won't miss out on the story anyway and I bet you'll prefer its gameplay and mechanics. I mean you have a choice between the same three commanders for the entire game basically whereas you have a lot more choice in the sequel. Still, the first one can be really fun if you want a bigger challenge but you can just play it after the sequel, even though it might lack some mechanics that you'll get used to in the second title.
I don't really understand how big the 1800 is since I dont understand the system too well, but the game was really fun!

How common is cheating on the browser version?
I've only ever heard of one cheater who was able to make a plugin that bypassed the fog of war mechanic, but he was quickly discovered and booted from the side and the devs later found out how to make sure to counter such plugins. Since then I've heard nothing about it.

Unlikely. I ain't no expert, just some very basic knowledge, so take it with a grain of salt. AW is a fairly interesting game to make an AI for, as it is turn based with discrete actions, which works well for AI training. AWBW also has a lot of match data, which can provide some pre-training data as well. Ultimately, the game has pretty ginormous complexity challenge still:
1. CO powers. There's a lot of potential match ups with complex CO power interactions.
2. Luck damage. Increases training variance and training time/data requirements.
3. Amount of unit match-ups and terrain types - complexity for the model to learn the rules.
4. Fog. Also classifiable as hidden markov model. I'm not qualified enough to say how much more complex would it make the training process, but it adds an extra level of complexity to the training algorithm.
The amount of compute and expertise you'd need to get an AW AI to a human level isn't that simple.
