He was kind, generous, funny, self-effacing, shy, HUGELY TALENTED but just the most ordinary bloke. LATER, when my own life went a bit 'sideways' he offered to help. I didn't take him up on that, but he offered... I KNOW FOR A FACT he has a good heart and he's a decent man...) I'm a heterosexual bloke, but for quite a few years I worked as a journalist on an LGBT paper. (NEVER MET kinder folk, men and women, they taught me my trade...) HERE'S THE THING... The 'T' part of LGBT causes problems even within the 'GAY' community... NOBODY WILL SPEAK UPON IT but if, as I did, you lived in that community YOU KNEW!!! IT WASN'T THE SAME THING!!! So an extremely good player, but chess was, and still is, dominated by males. The second best female in chess history, Hou Yifan, had a ranking high of 55, and a peak rating of somewhere down in the hundreds.

A reason men are far more likely to be top chess players than women is that, typically, men are more interested in 'things' whilst women are more interested in people. The nature of chess at the very highest level is that it is a memory test, not a maths test (chance, combinations and permutations). Those with the best memory of positions and successful move sequences succeed. That's how they can play 30 games at once in exhibitions. It takes just a second or two to see the game position and know what the next best move to take is. The eldest Polger was in a documentary which, inter alia, exhibited and explained the memory angle. They let her see a chess board with a game in play for under 10 seconds and then asked her to put the pieces on a board as she saw the game. She got most of if not all of it exactly right. Then they put pieces randomly on the board, not from a game, and she got plenty of it wrong. Everyone who plays chess knows how studying openings works and the very top players know openings which flow through most or, sometimes, the whole of a game.
