Just subscribed! Im vietnamese born & raised in California and will be going to Vietnam for the first time at the end of this year and have been watching lots of videos to prepare. Loveee your videos so much more than other foreigner videos because you brave the food spots that seem to be more for locals and you’re not scared to go to places where there are no english menus and nobody speaks english. Plus you’re open to pretty much trying everything without knowing what’s in it and it’s so fun to watch your reactions. Keep up the good work! I’ll be saving lots of your videos for food recommendations 😊

    Love me some Banh Xeo!
Each one isn't even $1.50 Au, yet here in Australia you'll be lucky to get one under $20....and all you get is tiny little shrimp and some bean sprouts!

the leaf you want to know is " lá cóc " of the cóc tree. I don't know its English name but the fruit of it taste like mango when it ripes and very sour when it green. This kind of leaf is very popular in the southern of VN, people combine it with many kind of herbs to enhence the flavour of the food, especially with spring roll. In some regions, they also use "la coc" to make " canh chua" ( a sour and sweet soup with fish and vegetables) , also yummy and known as a unique soup in the south and Mekong delta too.

The banh xeo looked delish. He said if it's good, then give him red pocket lol which means a tip. He was saying she was a beautiful person, dep meaning pretty! He was saying to go sit down to eat. Also he said to come back tomorrow! Rice paper rolls are diy and definately use up all the herbs. The raw mango gives it a fresh flavour! The food is textural and a lot of wrapping and a burst full of flavours on the taste buds.
The coconut ice cream lady also sold coconut juice to drink hence why they were to one side. The coconut ice cream had toasted coconut flakes on it!
The tea place at the end is mang cau which is custard apple flavour. Really enjoyed the video. Remember, they charge you extra for using the wet wipes :D But you are right, everyone is so friendly. It must the non tourist area you are in :))

@@EllisWR So happy you are both enjoying the food so much. How do you go back to English food after Asia?! I travelled the UK in 2008 and was dying to get back to London for Thai food. Vietnamese food was so hard to find back then. The north of Scotland had nothing!
I make my own version of banh xeo at home using pork mince, prawns and bean sprouts. The crispy batter is a combination of corn flour, rice flour, coconut cream and turmeric. Some oil and spring onion. If trying banh khot, they are mini and creamier with mung beans and coconut cream. Must try! Fyi. Also, you can make up your own dipping sauce using the fish sauce and chilli. The fish sauce dressing is normally just fish sauce, sugar, vinegar or lime/lemon, garlic and chilli. Always adjust to your own taste :))

Your videos are very original and refreshing because you dropped by random places and not follow best reviewed restaurants. It gets so boring to watch 10 travel videos and 8-9 of them visited the same pho, banh mi, coffee shop.....because of "best review" .
They are not the best restaurants, they just have the best locations, located where most tourists passing by. Common sense, restaurants survive because people approved them, so when you see Vietnamese eat them, that means they passed the test, no need to come to the "best review" restaurants and pay hefty prices. There are thousands of eateries shut down within months because people don't come for their bad food.
People who have never been to Vietnam watched 10 travel videos and they think wow what a small country showing the same restaurants over and over in so many videos.
The sauces are not meant to mix together. The thick sauce is the original central banh xeo sauce.....fish sauce is the southern banh xeo sauce. Many people cannot eat the pungent fermented shrimp paste sauce so they use fish sauce as alternative. But I think I will try to mix it like you guys someday to see what they taste like.

Filipino food is probably the least flavorful of SE Asian cuisine, though. I think they've gotten better with the influence and knowledge of other cuisines nearby, but they've still a long ways to go. The question is, which is better to him: Thai or Vietnamese and why? What about Indian since Brits love curry and such? LOL

Do not wrap banh xeo with rice papper, next time when you eat banh xeo, just wrap with lettuce is much better, without rice paper is much better.

It's Central style, that's why they use rice paper and gave the choice of fermented shrimp sauce or fish sauce (Central region uses fermented sauce). I can tell by your comments you're not used to Central region, but technically, banh xeo came from there and the south just took the recipe and modified it a to their own tastes.
