    Guys I've followed you for years and I love your videos, so please don't take this as hate. But this video is the proof of how the arrival of wealthy foreigners is forcing the middle/lower class Portuguese out of their "natural habitats". an apartment in central Lisbon costi 2 million euros is a very very bad thing

      These so called "Wealthy Foreigners" do this around the world.
      They go from country to country, buy when it is cheap, spread the word that it is a great country, then sell at a great profit, and then move on to the next country.
      The local people have no chance.

    I'm Portuguese and lived my entire life in Cascais. It is nice to see how rejuvenated the town has become now-a-days, but I honestly miss it before when it wasn't so crowded with foreigners and crazy expensive as it is now-a-days. I feel like it has lost its soul, and now it is just a town aimed for the super wealthy. Unfortunately I had to move out as it has become way too expensive for an average Portuguese salary
    It's sad, and I do miss my hometown and living there.

I hate to feel like this against anyone but you moving here is denying us the opportunity to live where we were born just cause you can afford higher rent.

      Expats do this a lot, but especially in Portugal since it has beautiful climate. It's so sad but the government make so much money from it and therefore they prioritise the foreigners rather than their people. Same thing is happening in Canada and Australia, and the normal citizens can't afford a property anymore.

We personally can not afford these five million euros villas and apartments but we still find it very interesting. :)

    This video almost perfectly encapsulates the pernicious changes affecting the Portuguese people whose rights, homeland and way of life should have been safeguarded by our leaders who sadly and greedily did not fulfill their duty.
    If you're a rich foreigner you may enjoy this video. If you're Portuguese, you'd have to be a fool to watch this and not feel pain in your soul.
    That real estate agent and everything that he stands for can be summarized into one word: GREED. And is in large part responsible for the turning of this country into a resort.
    If this continues, Portugal will soon become a caricature of itself, with a hyper exaggerated version of its own culture to entertain foreigners, with the few portuguese left becoming a servile class responsible for maintaining the theme park. In fact, it's already happening.
    Maybe HBO will pick up the story for a miniseries. It could be called "Tugaworld".

      We show all of Portugal. We been traveling around this country for five years and we still are. We just went to the Azores. We are currently working on our charity video about kids in Madeira. Just because we have a curious video about Cascais it doesn’t mean that our content is about materialism. We went to a a very Portuguese area where Portuguese people have lived for decades. Okay, this particular part of Portugal has catered to the more wealthy Portuguese for many many years which is interesting because it reflects in the culture In Cascais. Just because most of us can’t afford it it doesn’t mean that it isn’t interesting to see. We enjoy seeing how other people live no matter their background to get a different perspective than our own.

    What is so fantastic and wonderful about those basic fast built industrial cube geometrical concrete buildings you rave about? They are further littering the already damaged landscape of my country. This is happening as we have not got architectural rules per region as we should have and as countries like Switzerland and Austria and others have, who value their historical building designs over those crap modern styles sold mostly to foreigners. And yes there is contemporary or 20th century architecture of quality but none of those new buildings you show are an example of that unfortunately.

    Everything about this video rubbed me the wrong way. I moved to the Cascais area for nature and to live an active lifestyle. Now it's greed central. The top 1% of the world can build MASSIVE homes that will barely be used by the number of people living in them. More space for them; less for others. Poof there goes the open spaces. More people come with a cost to everything in this world. I would like a simple home that is comfortable in the winter. Portugal doesn't offer many of those unless you have a lot of euros. The Cascais marina is as pretentious as Miami and/or Los Angeles. If you are on vacation and want to splash out then go for it but living here you are paying 2x the cost or more for that view of boats. I left the U.S. to get away from excessive consumerism and never having or being enough. I am extremely fortunate that I had the ability to move to Portugal but please, new viewers, be aware that everything that glitters is not gold.

      These houses are for Americans, Russians, Chinese, Indians, multimillionaire buyers.
      Rich Portuguese already have their houses usually through inheritance, or if they’re new rich in a gated condominium (like Quinta Patino).
      Regular people have houses in the rim of the cities, some other side of the river (they have to cross bridges to go work to Lisbon, or to Oporto).
      All weighed, is a good living, quiet, no much polarity in society, not much also in wealth (or the rich usually don’t flaunt it).
      Crossing fingers the influx of these new capitalists don’t break the balance (with ideas uprooting live/work balance, tax cuts for wealthy, end social healthcare/retirement fund/unemployment insurance [it’s a bundle], de-regulate,…). And these risk are not coming (only) from Americans as is usually the stereotype, far worse from others accustomed to authoritarian views.

      @teamspeak9374 Рік тому +19

      it's not "are going to ruin", it's already happening.
      Minimum Wage is 740€. Average rent in the outskirts of Lisbon is 900€, closer to the city center is more than 1500€. Even in cities with no industry an hour away from lisbon with 10k population average rents are approaching 500€.
      These prices are so much higher than they were 10 years ago. Students can't afford a room in Lisbon anymore unless they have rich parents. Even if they work part-time it's not enough.
      Portugal only has 10M portuguese people here. It's less than New York City. Even if only 0.1% of americans wants to live here they would vastly outnumber us. Now add to those numbers other rich retirees from countries like UK, Denmark.. + all the India refugee and brazilians sharing 10 people in a house
      Portugal is unfortunately not for Portuguese anymore. It's an amazing country to live if you make a high salary ( fortunately I'm lucky enough to do because I'm able to work remotely to another country), but if you're an average person that makes 800-1000€ per month it's getting pretty close to being unliveable unless you parents owned a house and they leave it to you.
      I'm very tired of seeing close friends of mine having to leave the country because they want a decent life where they don't need two jobs to pay their rent for a shitty apartment in a shitty city and in turn listening to americans saying they love it because of "how cheap it is".

    I see people complaining because "this video is for foreigners". People don't get that Portugal in those areas was ALWAYS for the RICH people, Portuguese or not.
    And another thing, I'm not going to be too political buuuuttt didn't you guys voted PS AGAIN? So what are you guys complaining about? Portugal is a beautiful country but we have a tradition of high taxes and low salaries. But still, people always give their votes to the same political parties so, once again, what are you complaining about? You should be complaining about the cost of living raising but your salarie didn't raise as much as the cost of living and not about a well made video by a couple who are doing more to show what our country has to offer than you guys did!

    • @Tonycaveman
      @Tonycaveman Рік тому

      >those areas was ALWAYS for the RICH people
      That's not true, at least not in the absolute terms you use to describe it.
      I know this area quite well and can tell you that the economic, demographic and real-estate landscapes have changed dramatically over the last 10 years. Cascais is one of the major examples of such. People don't realize just how much things have changed in detriment to the portuguese people.
      Cascais always had crazy rich people, ofcourse it did. But it also had every shade of portuguese person you can imagine. These people are getting harder and harder to find now with the invasion of rich foreigners.
      >didn't you guys voted PS AGAIN? So what are you guys complaining about?
      Sadly, I agree with you here. Unfortunately the minute portion of portuguese people willing to oppose the pernicious changes happening under our very noses is not enough to effect change. I also highly doubt that the solution will happen through the political sphere.
      The problem demands a collective acknowledgement and awareness that is still a ways off from happening. We must wait for things to get much worse before that can occur, IMO. Until then all we can do is wait.
      Hopefully there will be something left to save by then.

    Sorry. The video is so superficial. You should think more of average low-income portuguese people, and not about attracting even more rich people to buy houses and apartments out of portuguese ownership. Current rent is already out of reach for many Portuguese people just because of tourism and “buy-a-home-in-portugal-youtube”trends.

    • @joenandamalie

      How is it superficial? It is an insight into the wealthy part of Portuguese real estate. Pretending it doesn’t exist, will not make it go away. This video is not for glorifying wealthy people, but it shouldn’t be received as the opposite either.

      I think you are very right. But this video is not for us to sell anything to our subscribers. It is more an insight into something that we can’t necessarily afford. Like when you watch a New York house tour og a Netflix show like “selling sunsets” where you get to see how the rich and famous live. It is more for the fun of it. We love real estate and we also like to see the mansion that most of us can’t afford. :)

    I hear many people complaining about the rich taking over and moving Portuguese people out those places they showed were always for the rich since I was a kid . I moved as a child to the USA Portuguese people have been moving out of Portugal for many years so if people don’t move in and add to the economy what would be the result most Americans moving to Portugal are Portuguese moving back because they love their country or kids of the ones that left

    UA-camrs like Stay Classy promoting Portugal to foreigners hardly contributes to the cost of living problems Portugal is facing. In reality, Portugal needs foreigners to keep their economy afloat. In the last decade, 10% of Portuguese (around 1 million out of 10 million people) left the country. To put it in perspective for Americans, that would be like 33 million Americans leaving the US in the last ten years! It is estimated by 2100, Portugal population will be around only 4.5 - 6 million people. The country's demographics are getting older and older as Portugal's brain drain are mostly the young and highly educated. Portugal need foreigners to come in, set up their lives and contribute to the economy... or it will simply dwindle away.

      @@marco31 Since I can not paste a link here, I can only put the article that this information is from.
      Google for "Diario de Noticias, Um milhão de Portugueses emigraram na última década". Also, the current foreign population in Portugal according to SEF is around 800,000. This is a large number, but still not enough to make up for the massive population drain from the Portuguese themselves.

    • @joenandamalie
      @joenandamalie  Рік тому +7

      If anything I believe we are helping the Portuguese by illustrating the current reality. The reason many foreigners choose Portugal is because the government here wants a lot of foreigners to move here. So if this is something the Portuguese people are all against I believe it’s a matter of changing the vote. Spread awareness. I don’t believe you can blame foreigners for coming here when it is so accessible. Who wouldn’t want to leave Denmark and depressing weather for Portugal, sun and happy days.

      Here is the direct translation from the whole article:
      One Million Portuguese Emigrated in the Last Decade
      by Jorge Costa Oliveira - 07 Setembro 2022
      The Emigration Report 2020, drawn up in 2021 by the Secretary of State for Portuguese Communities, is an important document that contains an extensive repository of information on Portuguese emigration.
      The main structuring conclusion is that Portugal continues to be one of the main emigration countries, with the overall number (stock) (c. 2.6 million nationals in 2019) corresponding to 25.7 per cent of its overall population, the highest figure among EU countries.
      Another impressive statistic is the consistently high number of emigrants each year. According to the INE, 991,536 Portuguese citizens emigrated between 2011 and 2020.
      In other words, in the last decade, 10 per cent of the resident population of Portuguese nationality left the country via emigration. At this rate, with low fertility rates and low immigration flows, the decrease in Portugal's resident population is inevitable. By 2100, according to the UN Population Survey, there will be 6.6 million of us; according to the projections of a study by Vollset and others, there will only be c. 4.5 million. At this rate, it could well get worse.
      The effects of this are dramatic, particularly in terms of the vitality of society and social security.
      The report mentioned, in general terms, the main reason for this migration drain: "Portugal has a GDP per capita and a human development index that are clearly lower than those of the main destination countries for Portuguese emigration". On the other hand, "Portugal has [had] a higher unemployment rate than the main emigration destination countries (with the exception of France)." But these reasons don't fully explain the phenomenon.
      It is unrealistic to be able to improve the living conditions of the general population any time soon, and in particular to significantly improve the pay situation of Portuguese workers. There are many people on low incomes, if not on the poverty line, and many companies with a cost structure based on low wages. This cannot be changed in the short term. But it is necessary to define an economic development strategy in which a large proportion of those considering leaving believe that, in the long term, their living conditions will be better and decide not to emigrate. For this to happen, it is essential that there is purpose, direction and ambition, that governments are competent and trustworthy, that business managers are qualified and capable, that it is easier to develop projects and that the tax burden is less oppressive. Until this happens, this migratory haemorrhage will not stop.
      We also need to start strengthening the links between Portugal's institutions and its citizens who are emigrating. By 2050, most Portuguese will no longer be living in Portugal but in other countries, namely Spain, France, Germany, the United Kingdom, Brazil, the United States, Canada and Angola. It is possible, if not probable, that after 2-3 generations there will be integration in these countries. Many will not return. But it is essential that the Portuguese state reinforces the ways in which these citizens maintain a connection to their homeland.

      You know an increasing population is actually a good thing right? Maybe you should take it up with your government for letting investment companies buy properties instead of harassing immigrants

    • @vervideosgiros1156
      @vervideosgiros1156 11 місяців тому

      @@ArginneDon't listen to him! The problem here is the sky rocketing prices but it's not immigrants's fault; it's the greedy real estate business and the government who allows it. Changing the vote would not solve the problem because right-wingeres don't dislike expensive houses and they don't care if expats are here, as long as people from poor countries don't arrive here.
