I think i found my new fav tech review channel. The music, the not over-the-top recording style, the text, the vibe. its all perfect
Thank you so much :D
I try to keep it casual and calm :)
I was just about to type this same thing before seeing your comment at the top :)
Really refreshing and soothing to watch. The music is perfect.
@@chiaza7735 thank you :))
I've been watching G14 reviews for like 3 days straight now... this one is one of the best. It might very well be the best if it had voiceover.
Thank you very much :D
i disagree. The no-voiceover is what makes it THE best
@@chiaza7735 what’s the benefit in having no voice over?
Kudos for a simple, stylish and informative review. I’ve picked up a 4060 model with 32 gigs of RAM in Beijing for around 1600 EUR. 4070 versions for whatever reason not available in here. On the other hand, I think 4060 fits this tiny laptop well.
Oooo nice choice, have fun with it!
And thank you so much :D
Just returned the 2024 G16 with the RTX 4090. Needed something more portable and better value. Get my 2024 G14 tomorrow! Thanks for the great content and review! This is perfect for both work and play!
Very nice review, looking forward to getting one sometime soon! I've just been hoping it goes on sale, will have to keep hoping for the best.
Thank you :)
I've seen it with 10% off so far, so maybe it'll go lower!
Mine is coming on Wednesday!! Even more hyped after watching this. Thanks for the thorough review.
Oh and huge thanks for that G-Helper tip. That will be one of the first things I throw on there. You think it's OK to remove Armoury Crate altogether? Or, just leave it on the machine and keep it closed? I know it delivers firmware updates and stuff in addition to the profile stuff.
Oooh that's exciting!
It's recommended to uninstall all Asus apps before installing G-helper. I've used it for 2 years now, and have never had any issues 👍🏻
It also downloads software and firmware updates for you, so it' a full replacement for AC and MyAsus
@@crimsontechyt SWEEET. Ty!!
One of the best reviews for this laptop I've ever seen, with that calm music and random memes make it nice to watch. Though I would've liked to see some Battlefield 1 gameplay since it's one of my fav games :(
Thanks so much :D
I LOVE bf1 as well, but i thought no one would want those results, since its such an old game now xd
I'll include it in the next laptop review i do :)
Thank you for the review, you really covered topics other youtubers don't really cover, what I like about your review is that you review it as a daily user and not numbers such as the benchmark and those details, after all as a user I care about the performance more than numbers on papers that might differ, you covered the battery life and how long it takes to drain which is really important, you also mentioned how the Asus app consumes a lot of CPU and RAM, and you gave an alternative, you also covered the wobbling and you compared it to others clearly, Overall, Thank you for the review, I will wait for the comparison with Razer blade next Sunday :D
Thank you so much :D
I'm reviewing it as a user myself, so I think I know what people want to know about :)
Thanks for sticking around!
I agree. No one really confirmed this G14 2024 can handle a 4-4.5 [probably] hours of video editing. Hope it's true cause it means you can go to a coffee shop and have a session of video or photo editing without the charger. Super important for some of us..
I was really thinking of buying this laptop... until I saw the price... Integrated graphics here i come
@5:13 - I Wonder how much battery life is saved when you Lock the screen to @60Hz .... ?
I just bought one today on sale. I played League of Legends and it got very hot wheee the keyboard meets the screen. I imagine that because that’s where it exhausts. But man it’s hot.
Beautiful, one day i will get it.
How hot did it get when gaming and how long were you playing for?
Amazing video! Earned a sub! :D
Thank you! :D
@8:58 - Do you need to uninstall Armoury Crate to use G-Helper?
I wonder what you found was best to set G-Helper which saved you battery / resources while maybe boosting your performance too....
Yes, its recommended to uninstall all asus apps before installing g-helper, since its a replacement for everything. I found that an undervolt of roughly -5 on the cpu keeps performance the same, while consuming up to 7w less power in light tasks (thats quite a difference)
@@crimsontechyt That's really interesting. Thanks for sharing. I wonder what other people found out about G-Helper settings on the 2024....maybe they share it on the Asus Reddit...I wonder...
Interesting you figured out how to test it too...
I am thinking of buying asus rog strix g16, but should I instead get the 16 inch of this? Bc I really need a laptop that is excellent for gaming and video editing without being so thick and heavy for portability.
The G16 is *definitely* more premium than the strix. I'd get it :D
@8:17 - What's the difference between Automatic Select vs. Optimus?
Aren't those two modes do the same? Switch between integrated Graphics vs. Dedicated?
Automatic select switched between the two based on whether the laptop is plugged in i think.
@@crimsontechyt So you kept it in that mode? You don't use Optimus?
For gaming tests I kept it in Ultimate mode, and for normal loads i kept it on automatic
Excellent review yet again! You still have the ol flowx x13 mate? How does that compare to this new g14? Seems to me the new g14 is a lot more similar to x13 minus the flippy screen.
Thank you :)
You're correct, it's very similar to the Flow X13 in many ways, but it's mostly better. The Zephyrus G14 is essentially just a Flow X13 with a much better display and speakers, a higher TGP for its CPU and GPU (so slightly better performance), an RGB keyboard, and just slightly bigger.
The Flow on the other hand is lighter, smaller, and thinner.
Does the left and right portions of the rubber foot closest to the bottom vents creak when you press on them? I have the G16 and it does this for me.
No, mine doesn't creak at all. I did have that with my 2021 ROG Flow X13 though. I screwed the back off and put it back on again, and that fixed it. But idk if that voids warranty, so i wouldnt recommend it :)
@14:53 - While I use After Effects + Premiere + Photoshop rely more on CPU, while Davinci + Blender - rely more on GPU, so maybe 4070 will be ok. Not best.
Yet, I'm more worried about only 32GB RAM while the 2023 can use 64GB if you install a 48GB stick of RAM.
Question is, how much portability is important [for me it is. I understand the 2024 G14 with it's power brick weighs the same as the 2023 G14 laptop itself]. And what about reliability? That's a tough one. Heard many bad stories about Asus quality control. Hope no problems occur with the G14, with that OLED screen while working for hours on apps with steady UI [no screen burn in happening]. It's a tough call to understand how much performance really could, say, a 2023 G14 with 4080 + 64GB could really give us. 50% more performance really?
How about battery life with that?
Many unanswered questions...
I think OLED burn in has for a big part been solved with all the modern anti burn in techniques they use on panels, but i understand that it is still a concern, especially with static UIs.
If the highest GPU performance and RAM limits are important for you (for example with video editing), i would really recommend getting the 2023 model with a 4080 or 4090 and upgrade the RAM, because the difference in performance really is that big.
For example: the 4070 model scores ~11000 in 3DMark TimeSpy. But the 4080 scores 16000, and the 4090 scores 17500.
So it really is a roughly 40-50% difference in GPU performance (not to mention the VRAM difference!)
For everything elsez the 2024 is an awesome upgrade. But for pure power, the 2023 Zephyrus G14 is still undefeated
@@crimsontechyt Thanks for the detailed reply man. i believe it's all a question of balance.
Compact + Lightness is important to me.
Built quality and reliability- is also important.
That (I hope) you get with the 2024 G14.
Now, about power.
I do not know how 16000 vs. 11000 benchmark translates in real life (it's 45% faster on paper for the 4080 which is rare to find today. I didn't see any real life comparison for that in Davinci or AE (I use my laptop for video editing. Not gaming). So, I know CPU had more heft here. It's the possibility of using 3D /Blender and Davinci.
Now, the last aspect here is battery life.
If the cost of having a 4080 means I can't edit video for 4 hours but rather 2 - then it's not so good for me.
What I'm trying to say is that I feel like making a decision on paper is tricky. And maybe the 2024 G14 will give 85-90% speed compared to a 2023 G14 (not 50%). So, I need that balance.
The 64GB RAM option of the 2023-, now that's a different story and will surely give more space to work on.
You're an amazing reviewer, man. Wish you could test your G14 for content creation and not only gaming cause you know how to communicate this hard to find, real life info to your viewers.
p.s- I read 2023 G14 4080 owners returning their laptops after overheating. Like it happens to many users...
Very nice review. Thank you 👍👍👍👍 One question : Is it good for Premiere and After effects with the G14 (4060) ???
Yes, it's not that much slower than the 4070, and still does great in premiere pro.
And thank you! :)
Thank you for the great comprehensive review! My only question is how powerful will it be to run engineering programs such as Solidworks/ ANSYS?
Unfortunately i dont have much experience with those programs, but i can tell you it runs blender, autocad, and premiere pro really well
@@crimsontechyt It meets my university’s minimum requirement, so I don’t think I will have any problems. It’s on sale $1700 for me, and after this review im definitely getting it.
@@unbrroken4810 Oooh nice find :o
It's a great overall laptop, im sure you'll enjoy it!
@13:50 - did you really edit in Premiere for 4-5 hour session on battery alone?
Was the G14 running on Optimus / MUX? I'm trying to understand if you kept the ULTIMATE performance mode On [so the 4070 was turned On all the time while on battery]- and you still managed to get 4.5 hours of video editing....?
With the premiere test i used optimus mode, so it wasnt using the 4070 all the time, and switched between the dGPU and iGPU when necessary.
@@crimsontechyt Thanks for letting me know, it's important!
It's totally fine that the MUX switch was used while editing on Premiere. I guess it means for Davinci- which is more reliant on GPU - it will be less than 4 hours of battery life.
And for After Effects? Who knows...it's still CPU centric, yet, not sure without a test.
What I still don't get is how one time you're using "Automatic Select" for switching between dGPU and iGPU , and one time you use OPTIMUS.
Maybe it's the same mode, and the G14 uses the "Automatic Select" while plugged in , and on battery - switches to OPTIMUS...? (you said you set it up via the Nvidia drivers. Not via G-Helper]
They're 2 seperate systems:
Optimus uses software to change between the iGPU and dGPU, but it still routes the display through the iGPU, meaning you'll lose some performance, and have a bit more delay.
The automatic setting in Nvidia control panel used advanced Optimus to switch between the two, making a seperate "virtual display" for the dGPU, meaning it will switch between these two virtual displays when switching from GPU, so it'll be directly routed to the right GPU.
@@crimsontechyt Holy crap! How did you find out this information? Very nice!
So, keeping things on the first "Auto" option. Got it.
Heard there are laptops where you gotta restart and choose if you wanna use integrated or dedicated GPU. That's really lame...
Yeah thats the MUX switch on the G14, thats essentially what the ULTIMATE mode does :)
Is the 2023 version's speaker as good? In all model? Plan to buy one with ryzen 7735hs rtx 3050.
No, the 2023 version has a different (older) speaker system. The 2024 sounds better
im interested to know if the gpu power limit can be raised. ive been heavily researching this machine and am very much inclined to buy it but giving the gpu a bit more power would be pretty cool
Custom BIOS' DO exist, which enable slightly more power for the GPU. Other than that, it's pretty hard locked on Nvidia's side.
I dont recommend trying that out though, unless you're an EXPERT in that field 🙃
If I get the 4060 16gb ram how much of a down grade in performance is it to yours? Its the only versión available in my country 😞
About 15-20% less compared to the 4070
Ah yes i love seeing good oled colors thru my ips panel
Hi I'm pretty much set on buying this laptop and have consulted a lot of reviews and it seems mixed about the fan noise - some reviews don't mention it or say it's quiet but others say there is a high pitched noise and loud - what is your experience? Thanks!
It's slightly higher pitched than my Blade 14, but i dont find it annoying. It *can* get loud at max fan speed, but it will never reach that unless you manually set it that way.
@@crimsontechyten modo rendimiento o silencioso suena fuerte el ventilador?
Porque hay algunas laptops que en modo rendimiento no suenan nada
How about the temperature on the surface of keyboard?
The third fan keeps the top deck nice and cool :)
@2:29 - Which USB-C charger can you use with this G14? a GAN 100W? More? Less?
And how bad is it for the battery? Probably it ruins it.... so it doesn't keeps a charge as time goes by....
Usb-C charging is limited to 100W, and uses the same protocol as their own proprietary charger. Their port is basically just usb-c with a custom connector and no data throughput, so there shouldnt be any negative effects on the battery 👍🏻
@@crimsontechyt Thanx for confirming 100W usb-c is the limit [not sure if it means GAN charger or not].
A few questions about it:
1. I understood that usb-c creates heat which hurts the battery + And that it charges the battery as it works instead of bypassing it and feeding power to the laptop itself [it's a missing feature I understand] - so, with time the battery will lose it's charge if you use the usb-c way
2. You're saying the usb-c PD [or however it's called]- is strictly for charging? You can't hook an external SSD or M2 drive to it?
You can't hook a usb-c HUB with many extension ports which could simultaneously be used to charge the laptop + and utilize extra USB-A / -c / HDMI ports?
The battery discharges while using usb-c because 100w is not enough to support the system under heavy load. 180W is needed to charge the laptop while using it, so the battery percentage will go down if you for example play a game while charging it through usb-c.
You can use the usb-c port regularly for data as well, i meant that Asus' prorpietary connector uses the same protocol as usb-c to charge the device, just as 180W and with a port that doesnt fit usb-c devices (meaning you couldnt use it for anything else of course)
@@crimsontechyt Many thanks for that. I got no clue how you have this info, but you're a genius :)
I'm not going to game. I'm gonna video edit. This means there will be peaks of voltage, yet not as intense probably as gaming [as it's always pushing performance all the time].
This means that using a usb-c while video editing, will drain the battery, yet, it may give me, say 7-8 hours instead of 4-5 hours of editing? [just assuming].
Again, I don't know what this protocol deal means, but you're saying the G14 is being fed power the same method either by the charger or by the usb-c charger?
I heard the usb-c creates heat and ruins battery. You're saying it doesn't, then...
Heard some G14's include such extra usb-c 100W charger by Asus themselves [don't know how come but I heard so], therefore, maybe it's better to get the original Asus one, rather than a 3rd party usb-c GAN charger. The fact they supply it themselves might hint that it may not ruin the battery... :)
Yes, usb-c charging wont ruin the battery. The ROG Flow X13 can ONLY charge through a USB-C charger (which is included in the box), so that would be a bit odd.
I did see some G14s come with a 100W USB-C charger, which is just a GAn charger from Asus, but i dont know if this varies per model or per region.
It would def give you more battery life though, yes
Will the g14 but with rtx4060 differ that much in performance compare to yours? Planning to buy it but there's only 4060 option in my country
Also I like your style of review! Relaxing, compact and covers EEEEVERYTHING that I can't find in another "professional" reviewer. I also wanna wait your review on RB14, cuz why not 😅
It's about 10-20% slower in terms of GPU performance, but it'll still be good nonetheless :)
@khalifa6413 HAHA thank you :D that means alot
Where did you purchase a Black G14? All the ones being sold are in White, which looks much cheaper on the keyboard panel :(
The white version is more expensive here (The Netherlands / Belgium), so i got the black version. They should be sold side by side, but i think it may vary per region :o
Here in America the Grey is more expensive by $200 but it was worth it to me. Had to buy it directly from
Asus.
@@timmothy07 Hey, thinking about doing the same. Any issues or complaints with ordering directly from ASUS? Seems to be a wreck right now with the "warranty".
@@Phasequick only issue I had was trying to pay with my personal card. They use a 3rd party to contact you by phone to confirm you made the purchase but don’t tell you they are doing that. If you don’t answer the call they cancel the order. Cancelled multiple orders before I realized.
@@timmothy07 Gotcha! Thanks for the reply, I’ll definitely watch out for that if I buy thru asus
G16 review?😁
When it will launch in India
im using vertical dock ... do you find any way to turn it on without open the lid ?
No, i dont think thats possible :(
@@crimsontechyt can you test the usb c 100w passthrough ? some guy said no usb c passthrough !
There's only 100W usb-c power delivery on the left side of the laptop
@@crimsontechyt no i known but i mean 100w go directly to feed the hardware (like DC power in)or go to charge the battery and hardware use power from battery. You can check with 100w usbc and idle on it. Check the power monitor. Under 5w mean no pass through power in from usbc
@PhucThien1 Ohh like that, no it does not feed the hardware directly, as it wouldn't be enough power to power it fully. It goes through the battery first (but then again, so does every other gaming laptop that can be charged through usb-c)
Got my G16 in a few days ago. Dang what a machine this is! Selling my macbook
Damn, nice buy! Enjoy it :D
@@crimsontechyt I saw in the vid that you had the Tweakers website open. Are you Dutch by any chance?
Yes i am :)
@@crimsontechyt Well maybe we can meet up so you can review the G16 model? I have the Core Ultra 155H, RTX 4070 IPS panel version. Let me know if you are interested :)
Oh damn really? I dont have access to the G16 rn, so that would be really awesome :D
How would you wanna do that?
One downside for this laptop which you missed is that the ram is soldered in and not upgradable
Other than that, amazing video and loved watching it :)
Completely forgot to mention that, oof 🙃
And thank you :D
very troubling isue indeed, not having 64GB option. I wonder how much 64GB would add to video editing / After Effects workflow, if really 50% more as it is double 32GB? Or by less than 50% boost IRL. Because the thin and sturdy chasis+light weight of the 2024 is a huge plus compared to the thicker, heavier and plasticy 2023 G14
Between this and rog g16 which one is better?
They're basically the exact same, except the G16 has better speakers and longer battery life.
It all depends on which size you prefer :)
Yo tengo una rog strix g16 y en modo silencio o rendimiento no suena nada. Quiero cambiar a la zephyrus g14. En esos modos suena bastante?
In silent mode the fans almost never turn on. I tweaked it a bit myself with g-helper, and it's ALWAYS silent during normal use :)
If you like the bigger screen, definitely stick with the Strix. Only get the G14 if you want a smaller, lighter form factor, and a nicer display.
Oled burn-in isnt really an issue anymore, as a lot of techniques are used to make it last longer. So dont be discouraged to buy a laptop because of that :)
Do you get any eyestrain looking at this OLED?
No, but i never really do. It doesnt flicker at lower brightness levels, so it shouldnt be a problem :)
Will this one run on turbo mode unplugged?
My 2021 g14 was a beast and lasted 3 years til I broke it.
Finally a reason to upgrade, and it sure seems the 2024 model is a big upgrade for only a few hundred $ more. Hopefully so!
Only if you have G-Helper installed. With Armoury Crate, it won't let you switch to turbo while unplugged.
It's a MASSIVE upgrade over the 2021 model, you'll really enjoy it if you decide to buy it :D
@crimsontechyt nice. Thanks! Would you say the performance is at least a little better than the 2021?
@AdamGbl95 it depends on the spec you got ofcourse, but regardless the performance increase will be considerable
@crimsontechyt it was a 1tb, rtx3060, 16gb ram, FHD 144hz spec.
Well if it at least runs exactly the same on full qhd resolution then I'll be happy
It will run a LOT better
you keep most of the laptops you buy?
Some yes, some i sell :)
just missing touch screen
So confusing. Many reviews tell that the battery life typically last for only around 9 hours when doing websurfing. The reviews in my country report that the battery on this laptop would last for approx 6 hours if they do office works. But you said that this laptop's battery lasts for at least 12 hours of video playback. There is a big variance. And when u tested the battery life, did u turn on eco mode, turn off the gpu, and lower the screen resolution and brightness?
It all depends on what settings they use while testing of course. Brightness, power profile, hz, programs, etc. Affect battery life greatly, and nobody tests the same.
Video playback is just playing a video file on the desktop with nothing else running, so it doesnt use much power at all.
@@crimsontechyt gosh you reply really fast. By the way, can I get the setting when you tested the battery life?
@harryduong9330 haha i try to :D
I used a custom Silent profile, with an undervolt of -10, Eco mode, 30% brightness, and windows power profile on "best for battery"
Big decision this g16 or the flow x16
The G16 is slightly thicker, heavier and has no touchscreen, but it has higher power limits for its cpu and gpu (so higher performance), and an OLED display :oo
2023 G14 4090
If you want 14 inches, absolutely 😎
nobody ever talks about heat
During gaming the GPU doesnt get higher than 80, and the CPU hovers around 90, which is pretty normal (abt the same as the flow x13)
They could've gone for per key rgb. Kinda cheapskate move by asus. Good video tho u got a subscriber
I agree, single zone rgb is pretty wack.
Thank you! :D
g16 is much better.
But that's a 16 inch laptop
No, it's noisy
Compare it with mackbook
The newest macbook i have right now is a 2018 Macbook Pro, so that wouldnt be very fair 🥲
