Definitely one of the greatest bands of all time... They pioneered in this mixture of Japanese traditional music and popular music (rock, metal, etc.).
The traditional drums are called Taiko drums. The banjo style instrument is called shamisen and it's not a brush but rather a large pick that fits the whole hand. They also incorporate a traditional flute called shakuhachi and a koto the traditional Japanese zither/harp, and their songs are sung in the traditional kabuki opera vocals. They're the kind of band you have to see live to really appreciate them. Not for playlist, but for an experience.

This singing style calls "Shigin", what means "Poetry", and is an ancient way of reading poems in which some kanjis have a double "lexical- and musical" value.
