I don’t think Pen is selfish. I think she is frustrated. She is overlooked, ridiculed and stepped on by everyone even her own family. Eloise to an extent is also not very nice to her. She is constantly complaining to her about how exhausting it is getting all this male attention, when she knows that Pen is left in the corner. She never really takes Pens feelings in to account or asks how she is doing. Pen finally snaps and decides if everyone is going to treat me like crap then I’m going to take something for myself. I’m going to invent this persona that everyone will listen to and want to know.

She acts like she’s better than all other women I’d like to quote Meg said “just because my dreams are different than yours, doesn’t mean they’re unimportant.” Eloise gave Daphne such a hard time in season 1 and always fails to see how hard everyone’s life is. In my opinion, she’s also as childish as Colin. In her fantasies, with no idea of how hard life is. To the two of them, life is hardest for them

She is openly rude to anyone who follows conventions and wants to fit in. I think if Eloise lived in the 21st century she would be one of those girls who posts those “not like other girls” memes on social media. While talking endlessly about how she is so different.
Fact is though, Pen still did nothing with Lady Whistledown. Not anything useful at least. She just used her words to hurt others, not exactly something to be proud of.

I would say Eloise’s issue with Pen is self-inflicted. No one told Eloise to leave the wedding and go to that print shop. She does things without thoughts of the consequences of her actions. That’s on Eloise honestly.

That is not the full story- So basically the queen thought lady whisteldown is Eloise so she threatened Eloise to surrender to her and make allies with her otherwise she will ruin her already half ruined family. Eloise told that to Penelope. Penelope who dint want her friend’s family to be ruined. So she asked her partner what to do in that situation. Penelope’s partner recommend writing smt really bad abt Eloise cuz someone would not ruin their own reputation. first Penelope disagreed as she dint want to back stab her dearest friend but she agreed cuz she dint have another choice. Therefore she revealed Eloise’s really scandalous secret which hurted Eloise very badly.
Considering how cautious Penelope was since the beginning, I was let down about the whole revelation plot line. I thought it was slightly premature and more likely to of happened when Colin and Penelope became a thing. I can understand Eloise finding out first but still I thought Eloise finding out was slightly premature.

My interpretation was that Penelope had given up writing at that point, and was so glad to have her friend safe that she attempted to move forward more herself, hence the way she spoke aloud thoughts she usually would have left for her writing. It just immediately backfired because that was the only puzzle piece Eloise needed.
For people saying eloise treated her Penelope like shit, here's my personal view. The one point everyone is pointing out is that eloise never notices how pen gossips, and the moment she notices it she reacts. But the actual thing is pen normally doesn't gossip with eloise. One moment where pen and eloise gossip is when pen reveals that marina is pregnant, but yet she censors her name and call her a maid. Pen even gossips with Colin when she gets excited for a brief second but the second Colin notices and points it out, she stops, feeling herself being under surveillance. The other times, when eloise was on a conquest to find out who lady whistledown is, pen doesn't gossip with el even though el shares her secrets with pen. But the moment el stops searching for lady whistledown, pen becomes relieved and starts gossiping, thinking subconsciously that she's off the radar.
Eloise was right in her place because as a bestfriend she kept no secrets from pen and she was just expecting the same . And in this scene pen had no regrets about lying to her but she even bragged about it. That last episode really portrayed pen as a selfish friend.
While I agree, I also slightly disagree on one key point. Eloise should have seen her friend's pain and been there for her. Together they can do so much, as lad who just lmk
I feel like neither of them were being selfless nor selfish,they were being human,they did what they thought to be best,they did a lot of mistakes and I understand why both of them are angry at each other,Pen shode have been honest with El and trusted her and be more open about her feelings,but also El shode have seen how Penelope actually felt and how hypocrite her world may have seem to her
I also agree. They both made lots of mistakes but they’re human and we all make mistakes. It’s really important to just own up to those mistakes and make up for what you’ve done wrong.

Omg I saw this scene for the first time two nights ago. The way she looked at Penelope and came to the conclusion that she was Lady Whistledown was such good acting I was genuinely shocked

Marina was also selfish. She was into fooling Colin. I am no fending Penelope her intentions were love and jealousy but let’s not forget how Marina was also a selfish person to trick Colin.

Soooo everyone dogs on Eloise Penelope AND marina, but really they’re all just direct and honest and trying to make the best of the situation they’re put into. They don’t intentionally cause hurt. Pen DID put marina but only because she was trying to help Colin, and marina destroyed the letters which pen could have used to talk to Colin privately with. And Eloise is a bit self focused but that’s the result of her status in her family and society-she does need to mature but it’s not anything crazy. And pen ISNT really selfish she did the worst to protect Eloise AND WAS willing to give it up realizing how much harm deceit was causing.
To be honest, I'm kinda with Penelope at the end of season two, even though she fucked up really bad Eloise saying 'what a keen observation Pen' and realising for the first time that her best friend, who's been on the sidelines the whole life, might be Lady Whistledown is so funny to me because that's your best friend!!! People tend to forget that although Penelope’s business as Lady Whistledown can be quite scandalous, it has sometimes saved certain people too many times. 1. Because of her interference, Daphne didn’t have to marry Nigel, that creep. 2. Colin was saved from shame from Marina and the pregnancy. 3. Eloise was even saved twice from the Queen. One from her debut since she didn’t want to do it and two was from the Queen thinking she was Lady Whistledown, even though that last part is kinda on Pen. But still she saved Eloise from Queen Charlotte.

I think people.don't want to admit that both Eloise and Pen have flaws. Eloise hyperfocuses on things she wants and doesn't have foresight or awareness of society and people who aren't her. Pen has always been ignored and shoved aside and LW may be a gossip piece, it has done good things for people on one hand and caused trouble in the other. While Eloise has every right to be upset, it wasn't going to be forever. Like most of the other scandals the Bridgertons and other families are involved in, it usually passes with time. Eloise may want to break free of thw restrictions society places on her, she still wants to have the benefits it has given her as well.
Honestly, I cannot defend Pen in this season. Frankly, she did not care about Eloise, not more than about her secret. She didn't care that Eloise saw Theo because of the scandal, but because she was scared she would find out she's whistledown. She gaslit her friend multiple times and ruined her happiness because of it. Penelope created Whistledown to hurt other people, that's also something that cannot be overlooked. She didn't use it to "do something" not anything to be proud of at least. That's like a bully going "at least I did something" when they beat someone up or cyberbully someone. And when Eloise paid the price for Penelope's actions, she didn't even try to turn herself in. She immediately dismissed the idea, even though she would've had the evidence to prove it was her with former sheets, the writing style and she could've easily told those secrets only to the queen to prove it. At this point, I'm wondering how they want to turn her character around without making her the second Sierra.
She should be rightfully scared her secret would be out tho. If u look at it penelope was even right. If she had stopped going there the queen wouldn't have suspected she was lady whistedown. Even if the queen had not believed her, the fact that she tried would've shown that she actually cared for Elise. And frankly, seeing as the Queen quickly realized she was wrong rather quickly, I doubt the pre-written pamplets and the fact that nothing horrible was ever written about her family either wouldn't have been enough to at least shake her resolve. Pen is intelligent, realises her mistakes, makes the hard choice thinking she is helping, doesn't want to give up a personal secret independent life aka her career for someone who pretends to be a true friend but ignores her life every one else, does ruinable mistakes even when repeatedly told not to do them, teases and is rude to people in their vulnerable situation, has privilege but maligns everyone in the process.
Pen is selfish I do agree on that.. she is the kind of girl who does not believe in herself but has found power in being lady whistledown. The fact that she revealed Marina's pregnancy just to stop her from marrying Collin already showed her selfishness. But Eloise was also selfish in a way, all she cared about was finding who is lady whistledown and talks only about this with Pen. For example when Pen was really heartbroken because of Marina and Collin, and Eloïse came to her house in order to (of course) talk about lady whistledown. Anyway I loved everything about these two 🥲
I don't care what you people say, having read the books, it gives me a better understanding of Pen's character. Yes she was a little manipulative this season (and maybe it's also a result of a little exageration in drama seeking bybthe writers because the books are far less problematic) but guys, she was playing a double game, what else did you expect her to do ? Plus if Eloise wasn't so careless, she wouldn't have had to make such a hard decision. Pen did it to save her friend. Even if she had told the queen, she wouldn't have believed it was her. They both have their fault and have been selfish in their own way but to me there's no bad guy here. Good for Eloise to have paid a little attention to her best friend for once tho. What lady whistledown does is a way for Pen to show how shallow the ton is . She and some other young girls are suffering from their occasionnal cruelty. Somehow, it's not just about gossip. Not like Eloise who speaks without acting and spends her days complaining about her extremely priviledged life. The difference between both girls is that Eloïse has the choice. She chooses to be isolated from the ton. She refuses dances while Pen doesn't even get the occasion to be asked to go to the floor. In the books, Eloise is unmarried because she refused like 6 proposals but no one has ever asked Pen and she's dying from her love for Collin. It doesn't excuse her mistakes tho . I don't feel bad for Pen. She should have grown a spine to stand up to the ppl who put her down and made her feel bad about herself. If you're not pretty (which she is, she's extremely beautiful) then you need to have a larger than life personality to make ppl notice you if you want attention. Penelope chose to be a wall flower. Its definitely an accomplishment in their time. Women could literally do nothing, and she became a major writer. Shes not just a gossiper, but an author with a way with words. Thats what they focus on in the books, and we kinda see glimpses of that in the show.

Portia berates her 24/7 and her sisters constantly tease her for no reason. Eloise can be heard but Pen can’t as Pen. That’s why she came up with Lady Whistledown in the first place. And as for what Pen did in the Marina situation, I believe she did the right thing in a way. If she just told someone like Colin, Eloise or even Violet in private, I don’t think they would’ve believed her so easily. Colin was too in love to listen and Eloise would’ve found it preposterous. Plus, Marina was trapping a nice man into a sham marriage so she kinda deserved to be outed for that. I get she was doing it to protect herself and her child but it doesn’t change the fact that it’s wrong. Plus a scandal that affects one person affects everyone in the family. So Pen outed Marina knowing that her reputation was tainted too. All because she loved Colin so much. As for Eloise being suspected in being LW by the Queen, that’s kinda on Eloise herself. She was running around town not thinking of the risks of doing that back then and she left her brother’s wedding without thinking of the consequences of that. She should have been more careful. And that’s why the Queen suspected her as Lady Whistledown. Pen may not be blameless but Eloise isn’t either. Plus, you don’t see that Pen ruining Eloise literally saved her from the Queen. If she hadn’t have done that, Queen Charlotte would have laid hell on the Bridgertons. They would’ve never recovered from that and Eloise probably would’ve gotten killed for being suspected as LW. And what’s better? Losing your life or losing your reputation for a time(Since the Ton has short memories and move on rather quickly). Besides the Bridgertons recovered from that political radical scandal in two seconds flat. Similar to how the Featheringtons recovered from the Marina situation in two seconds.
Both have their issues. El in the 1st season treated Pen like her side kick; didn’t listen to her advice and discounted her. The reason Pen being Whistledown works is because EVERYONE, even her best friend (despite hints) discounted her. Is she selfish, sure. But so was El.

I hate the fact they let her be found out so early, in the books Pen isn't found out until she's in her late 20's (around 28) and Colin, who is her love interest, is the one who finds out first. That part is important for him be the one to find out first, not Eloise. So I'm highly disappointed what they did in the show. Especially her being found out, not once but twice.
I know eloise hasnt always been the best but it's so not right to defend penelope's actions when she was clearly wrong about the gossip thing and even more for the last blow. I can't believe people try to justify pen's mistakes by saying eloise made some of her own. Hold them both accountable. There arent any excuses for both of them but let them both grow.
Without Lady Whistledown the story wouldn’t be complete, she brings excitement to the town. She did something nobody in town thought about, I still love her no matter what.

It’s true that Pen messed up but Eloise doesn’t realize that she and Penelope are on two sides of the same coin. Eloise is born into a wealthy and popular family, has many prospects at her disposal, and will always have her brothers to care for her if she doesn’t marry. Penelope on the other hand has not one suitor on her doorstep, gets belittled and ignored by everyone in society, and even her own family often think of her as an afterthought and emotionally abuse her at home, especially her mother. Eloise has many people who love and care for her while Penelope has little to no one at her corner.

Almost ruined? You act like the Bridgertons don't do a lot of that themselves and that somehow they manage to get out of it. Eloise was the one being careless and got herself into a scandalous situation. Pen yes wrote it down and changed the circumstances, but she was also forced into that when the Queen was ready to black sheep the whole family because of Eloise's actions and there wasn't much else Pen could do. If she had went to the Queen and confessed, do you think she would believe her? Believe that unnoticed, ignored Pen would do all of that? Or that she was lying and making up evidence to protect her friend
This is by far the most messed up relationship. Eloise and Penelope were bestfriends though, Pen was Lady Whistledown (someone who writes stories and sh+ for the whole town/ which wasn't good.) and Eloise wanted to find who Lady Whistledown was (no one knew who Lady Whistledown was). And so the story goes on
The one time Eloise actually paid attention to Pen. Not when her father died and left them with nothing. Or she was frantic to prevent Colin from being used. Or when she was trying to stop the whole sister-cousin Jack thing. Had she paid ANY attention to Pen, she would have known something was up long before this. I personally felt like penelope was controlling herself around eloise when she was trying to find out who lady whistledown is. When eloise finally decides to stop searching and tells pen, pen loosens up in happiness that she's no longer in danger of getting exposed that she loosens up a bit, immediately gossiping with eloise. Like, she never gossiped with eloise before. This is further backed up by the fact that she had a moment where she gossips with colin, knowing certainly that he wouldn't search for or realise who lady whostledown was.
No that is not what happened. Pen was extremely manipulative and calculated. She never let El see that side of her. El even stated that it was the first time Pen ever spoke like that. El noticed it immediately. People only defend Pen out of pitty, and because they can relate to the "fat, undesirable girl" trope. If you remove the fact that Pen is fat, most people would have no sympathy for her.

Tbh I think El talks so much because Pen pretends she's listening, but doesn't really care. There's nothing you can say that justifies Pen's actions. Even if El wasn't the best friend, she did her best. Pen never voiced any issues with their friendship, so how can you fault El for doing something "wrong" when she never knew it was wrong. El was just being herself. Pen was sneaky and deceitful.
Yes Pen snitched her, but we all know it broke Pen too to do what she did and that she was just trying so hard to protect Eloise from the Queen. We all know what THE Queen can do. Yes. No way of sugarcoating it. Pen did act on her own self-interests to the expense of Eloise. But if only they could work it out like since El found out who Lady Whistledown is, she might find it in her heart to understand Pen more since El hunted LW for her own self-interests anw. El wanted LW to write something about women's right to pursue other careers. El didn't really care much about how she is viewed in society, but if they could both fix the conflict, maybe there will come a time when they will both manage the Lady Whistledown persona. That'll be OP since they'll have the power to change how society views certain norms because everybody believes LW more than the Queen herself. El wanted to convince LW to write something that would change certain norms like how women should pursue other careers. She's just betrayed at the moment cos she never thought LW will be someone very very close to her. She's confronted with the conflict between whether to disclose LW to the queen to clear out her name, or protect her best friend. Everybody listens to LW more than the Queen. Lol even the Queen is agitated by what LW writes. LW is the culture and wont come down easily. I doubt they will disclose her to the queen. Besides, Pen needed people to help manage the operations of LW. They'll be real partners in crime! Lol. I'm just hopeful with this kind of pov lol

Like for starters it was wrong of Penelope to have kept secret towards Eloise and Eloise were in the wrong for not paying attention to Penelope and don’t show gratitude back! I like this show and I love this conflict cuz no ones the good guy. Yes, Eloise is the victim but her personality is one that constantly fails to think about other people(someone loves them and cares but doesn't think of them before herself) and it makes her narrow-minded and makes her feel morally superior even when she's doing something wrong. While Penelope is the villain in this but her 2 of the biggest scandals she drops are to help Colin and Eloise. Agree with her or not she saved Colin from being baby trapped by someone who saw him as a decent means to an end(plus her cousin knew she had a crush on Colin she kept pursuing him even though she had other matches) and she also saved Eloise for whatever punishment the Queen was going to give her for believing she was Lady Whistledown. So complicated. So good. Can't wait to the next season.
The opinions on these two are really interesting. Its funny because I really like both of them. I think they are among my favourite characters. I like that this show has realistic people. These are characters that have their own priorities and motivations. They arent perfect all the time. They do irrational things, get jealous, vindicative and mess us really badly. Just like real people. But, they also have moments where they do care and want to be better. And even the "villians" usually have moments where they aren't just an extreme depiction of evil. I find them likeable even with all their mistakes. Which, I often don't. Lol Even Lady Featherington had a moment that really humanized her to me.
I am really heartbroken as to what happened to their friendship in the second season. I am really looking forward on how the third season will mend their broken friendship. I badly wanted these two to reunite.🥺

Eloise is fun and feisty and I love her, but she was a straight up b**ch to Penelope this episode. And I was SOOOO disappointed in Colin when he said he'd never court her! I relate to Pen so much. A writer, a wallflower, and "two stone heaver than I should be." But I'm not as brave as she is, to brave the perils of the world and just DO something. I admire her, and of course, I love Nicola Coughlan, she's a wonderful actress and plays the role perfectly!

NAH I feel no sympathy for Pen, she literally wrote about her friends and families secret for money. She threw everyone under the bus for some drama. I would never do that to friends or family. She has literally ruined peoples lives for entertainment. Eliose called her out on her bs. As she should. Playing with people's lives is not nice. Edit: eliose had every right to be a bitch, Pen has put Eliose in a bad place because of her writing. She could've talked to Eliose and tried to work something out but instead she continued to hide behind her facade and brought Eliose down. If she really cared for Eliose she would've tried to figure it out with her and told her the truth from the start.
I don't think Eloise is going to be mad for too long. In the books, she was proud of Pen and in the show, she talks about how it's admirable that Lady Whistledown has made a life for herself. She just has to be more selfless and Pen has to stand up for her self and speak out more and they'll be good.
People upset with Pen for putting Eloise in a Scandle clearly forget that the Queen has been trying to arrest Lady Whistledown since season 1. So while Pen temporarily tarnished Eloise's reputation, she was trying to save her life. Also her outing of Marina was to protect Colin, while yes she loved Colin, she long ago accepted she could not have him. If Marina wasnt trying to baby trap him, i think she would have been fine (but sad) with them together. Because it was two people she genuinely cared about. On the other hand she had been shit talking her own family, including herself, from day one. (especially seen in the books)
What Penelope did to Eloise was wrong, but the way I see it.. she had no choice. Queen Charlotte was fully convinced that Eloise was Lady Whistledown and threatened to destroy her and the Bridgerton family if she didn’t “come forward”. Pen wrote something that Eloise would NEVER write about herself.. and it took the Queen’s suspicions away from Eloise. Had Penelope NOT done that- had she stayed silent- Eloise and her family’s reputation would FOREVER be ruined.. it would’ve been a scandal that the Bridgerton family would NEVER recover from. If Penelope revealed herself to the Queen as Lady Whistledown, the Queen would’ve seen Penelope as a friend helping a friend. She NEVER would’ve been taken seriously. Which means that Pen, in a way, saved Eloise from Queen Charlotte. Eloise was being a hypocrite. She would always talk about her distaste for the societal expectations for women in The Ton and had ambitions about “breaking free from the rules of society”.. yet she never actually attempted to do anything. After all, actions speak louder than words.

I’m so mixed between the two… Everything Eloise said was true and made me cry, but what Pen said about how she just talks is true as well. Eloise is a privileged with both beauty and status and even if she doesn’t get married she’ll always have a loving family to stay with. Her attitude would be considered “rebellious” but for Pen she’s been trapped and her gateway was to tell the secrets of others. I don’t understand how should feel bout Pen cuz she has hurt more good people than helped.

I like the way they portrayed it in the show. Let me tell you why because Eloise and Pen are different from their book counterparts and I'm here for it. Remember, Penelope is a very flawed character that needs room to grow. She was always flawed and insecure...i mean, she's the writer of a gossip column. What's more insecure than that (very fun though). And Eloise is detective no. 1. She's always on her toes bro. It makes way more sense for her to be found out by Eloise first and then Colin. Colin's not looking for Whistledown. Eloise is. Pen let down her guard there because she decided to put down her quill and no longer be Whistledown at the time. But of course, Eloise would sniff that out because that's so different from how Pen usually acts around her. Plus Eloise is incredibly sensitive because of her column in the papers revealing her secret with Theo. In the book, it felt kind of unrealistic about the Whistledown reveal and I feel like in real life, you wouldn't be able to reveal this secret at all because you certainly won't be able to live a normal life after the fact. Bridges would be burnt. Having it depicted in real life kind of shows it more realistically. I mean, she's talking shit about everyone. Even if Pen didn't write about Eloise's secret with Theo, Eloise would've still been upset because that's my best friend and she's seen me desperately looking for her everywhere and she hasn't dared confided with me. I'd assume Eloise would've felt kind of insulted regardless because it was as if she was best friends with a different person the entire time. I'd feel a bit threatened and low-key scared. Whistledown has the power to scar livelihoods permanently. This shouldn't be light and amazing for Eloise regardless if Pen had written about her or not. Y'all really wanted her to be happy if it had went just like the books? That would've been so underwhelming
Ngl Eloise and Pen were not great friends to each other, but I feel for Penelope bc Eloise was sheltered in a way Penelope never was and she felt she wouldn’t understand the financial troubles of her position. She also wanted to make a difference, she wasn’t wrong that Eloise is sheltered and entitled, but I think she misjudged her friend in assuming Eloise wouldn’t grow and learn for her. Penelope didn’t trust and communicate with her friend. Eloise lacked empathy and understanding for Penelope, was very quick to pass judgment, which is partly due to her being so sheltered. She has always been empowered in her family and given a choice by her brothers, where the financial aspect of choosing a relationship never been something she’s ever thought about. So of course she’d never be able to understand the financial and power motivations behind Penelope’s actions. So they both weren’t good friends in a way to each other. On one hand Pénélope didn’t trust her friend, didn’t communicate and wasn’t honest with her, on the other hand, Eloise was quick to pass judgment and lacked empathy, as well as was unwilling to listen to her friend proving, in a way, Penelope’s fears right.
It’s funny how Eloise only ever talks about herself to Pen and the second she finally took two seconds to pay attention to her “best friend” it only took that long to see what had been right under her nose.

I don’t think Pen is selfish. I think she is frustrated. She is overlooked, ridiculed and stepped on by everyone even her own family. Eloise to an extent is also not very nice to her. She is constantly complaining to her about how exhausting it is getting all this male attention, when she knows that Pen is left in the corner. She never really takes Pens feelings in to account or asks how she is doing.
Pen finally snaps and decides if everyone is going to treat me like crap then I’m going to take something for myself. I’m going to invent this persona that everyone will listen to and want to know.

Eloise told that to Penelope. Penelope who dint want her friend’s family to be ruined. So she asked her partner what to do in that situation. Penelope’s partner recommend writing smt really bad abt Eloise cuz someone would not ruin their own reputation. first Penelope disagreed as she dint want to back stab her dearest friend but she agreed cuz she dint have another choice. Therefore she revealed Eloise’s really scandalous secret which hurted Eloise very badly.

Considering how cautious Penelope was since the beginning, I was let down about the whole revelation plot line. I thought it was slightly premature and more likely to of happened when Colin and Penelope became a thing. I can understand Eloise finding out first but still I thought Eloise finding out was slightly premature.

My interpretation was that Penelope had given up writing at that point, and was so glad to have her friend safe that she attempted to move forward more herself, hence the way she spoke aloud thoughts she usually would have left for her writing.
It just immediately backfired because that was the only puzzle piece Eloise needed.

For people saying eloise treated her Penelope like shit, here's my personal view.
The one point everyone is pointing out is that eloise never notices how pen gossips, and the moment she notices it she reacts. But the actual thing is pen normally doesn't gossip with eloise. One moment where pen and eloise gossip is when pen reveals that marina is pregnant, but yet she censors her name and call her a maid.
Pen even gossips with Colin when she gets excited for a brief second but the second Colin notices and points it out, she stops, feeling herself being under surveillance.
The other times, when eloise was on a conquest to find out who lady whistledown is, pen doesn't gossip with el even though el shares her secrets with pen. But the moment el stops searching for lady whistledown, pen becomes relieved and starts gossiping, thinking subconsciously that she's off the radar.

Soooo everyone dogs on Eloise Penelope AND marina, but really they’re all just direct and honest and trying to make the best of the situation they’re put into. They don’t intentionally cause hurt. Pen DID put marina but only because she was trying to help Colin, and marina destroyed the letters which pen could have used to talk to Colin privately with. And Eloise is a bit self focused but that’s the result of her status in her family and society-she does need to mature but it’s not anything crazy. People tend to forget that although Penelope’s business as Lady Whistledown can be quite scandalous, it has sometimes saved certain people too many times.
1. Because of her interference, Daphne didn’t have to marry Nigel, that creep.
2. Colin was saved from shame from Marina and the pregnancy.
3. Eloise was even saved twice from the Queen. One from her debut since she didn’t want to do it and two was from the Queen thinking she was Lady Whistledown, even though that last part is kinda on Pen. But still she saved Eloise from Queen Charlotte.

I think people.don't want to admit that both Eloise and Pen have flaws. Eloise hyperfocuses on things she wants and doesn't have foresight or awareness of society and people who aren't her. Pen has always been ignored and shoved aside and LW may be a gossip piece, it has done good things for people on one hand and caused trouble in the other. While Eloise has every right to be upset, it wasn't going to be forever. Like most of the other scandals the Bridgertons and other families are involved in, it usually passes with time. Eloise may want to break free of thw restrictions society places on her, she still wants to have the benefits it has given her as well.
I hope things workout for pen and el. I really love their duo. No one in this world honest and pure. People make mistakes 🤦🤦.

Honestly, I cannot defend Pen in this season. Frankly, she did not care about Eloise, not more than about her secret. She didn't care that Eloise saw Theo because of the scandal, but because she was scared she would find out she's whistledown. She gaslit her friend multiple times and ruined her happiness because of it. Penelope created Whistledown to hurt other people, that's also something that cannot be overlooked. She didn't use it to "do something" not anything to be proud of at least. That's like a bully going "at least I did something" when they beat someone up or cyberbully someone. And when Eloise paid the price for Penelope's actions, she didn't even try to turn herself in. She immediately dismissed the idea, even though she would've had the evidence to prove it was her with former sheets, the writing style and she could've easily told those secrets only to the queen to prove it.
At this point, I'm wondering how they want to turn her character around without making her the second Sierra.
She should be rightfully scared her secret would be out tho. If u look at it penelope was even right. If she had stopped going there the queen wouldn't have suspected she was lady whistedown. When did she gaslight her? Even after the whole queen finding out stuff she still went to see the boy like? Wtf? That's not intelligent at all. 1. Do you think El would have let Pen reveal LW identity if she knew her truth and it's consequences? DEFINITELY NOT. She is good that way.
2. We do know Pen would have been dismissed as a friend trying to help by the ton if not the queen. Coz...pfff..."Pen is a wallflower and judging by her family not that bright."

Between ruining El's fixable reputation (small temporary scandal) + Establishing that she is not the LW AND revealing Pen's LW identity which will definitely be found by the ton + it will make people seek revenge -- someone who has no family or any (as per the era's standards) strong male supporter/reputation... anyone would choose the former. It is too risky to choose the latter for someone who has NO support.
4. The only thing wrong there was she should atleast have told El before hand which was not done bcoz the decision was in haste, lot of fear and emotion involved, bcoz pen knows El, and most importantly who would want to ruin a hard earned reputation which gives oneself satisfaction.
5. Honestly, El wasn't exactly worth the TRY. In reality, most people would do what Pen did. Many are hating her for it but they are definitely not seeing that she realises her mistakes and accepts them but El doesn't even see her mistakes. Pen sees no way out and there is literally no way out (all those prove to the QUEEN theories have supper low success rates and are pretty unrealistic. How exactly could pen get an audience with ThE QuEeN when the ENTIRE Ton and her family dismisses her).
Pen is intelligent, realises her mistakes, makes the hard choice thinking she is helping, doesn't want to give up a personal secret independent life aka her career for someone who pretends to be a true friend but ignores her life every one else, does ruinable mistakes even when repeatedly told not to do them, teases and is rude to people in their vulnerable situation, has privilege but maligns everyone in the process.
Pen is selfish I do agree on that.. she is the kind of girl who does not believe in herself but has found power in being lady whistledown. The fact that she revealed Marina's pregnancy just to stop her from marrying Collin already showed her selfishness. But Eloise was also selfish in a way, all she cared about was finding who is lady whistledown and talks only about this with Pen. For example when Pen was really heartbroken because of Marina and Collin, and Eloïse came to her house in order to (of course) talk about lady whistledown. Anyway I loved everything about these two 🥲
I don't care what you people say, having read the books, it gives me a better understanding of Pen's character. Yes she was a little manipulative this season (and maybe it's also a result of a little exageration in drama seeking bybthe writers because the books are far less problematic) but guys, she was playing a double game, what else did you expect her to do ? Plus if Eloise wasn't so careless, she wouldn't have had to make such a hard decision. Pen did it to save her friend. Even if she had told the queen, she wouldn't have believed it was her. What lady whistledown does is a way for Pen to show how shallow the ton is . She and some other young girls are suffering from their occasionnal cruelty. Somehow, it's not just about gossip. So even if she souldn't have said that in this way and in such a situation, she was kind of right, she actually did something at least. Not like Eloise who speaks without acting and spends her days complaining about her extremely priviledged life. The difference between both girls is that Eloïse has the choice. She chooses to be isolated from the ton. She refuses dances while Pen doesn't even get the occasion to be asked to go to the floor. In the books, Eloise is unmarried because she refused like 6 proposals but no one has ever asked Pen and she's dying from her love for Collin. It doesn't excuse her mistakes tho . But guys, Pen just tried to make the best out of her situation. Like her mother does all the time either .

If she hadn’t have done that, Queen Charlotte would have laid hell on the Bridgertons. They would’ve never recovered from that and Eloise probably would’ve gotten killed for being suspected as LW. And what’s better? Losing your life or losing your reputation for a time(Since the Ton has short memories and move on rather quickly). Besides the Bridgertons recovered from that political radical scandal in two seconds flat. Similar to how the Featheringtons recovered from the Marina situation in two seconds.

Both have their issues. El in the 1st season treated Pen like her side kick; didn’t listen to her advice and discounted her. The reason Pen being Whistledown works is because EVERYONE, even her best friend (despite hints) discounted her. Is she selfish, sure. But so was El.

I mean Penelope tried to warn Eloise multiple times, Theo warned her, the sewing lady warned her she was the one obsessed. Now I would say Penelope did have moments where she was selfish especially with marina but the queens guards where already around the place Eloise was going and her carelessness would and did get her caught, and in the end it seemed that Theo would have distanced himself from Eloise regardless because if not lady whistledown, then because of the queen.🤷🏾♀️
I hate the fact they let her be found out so early, in the books Pen isn't found out until she's in her late 20's (around 28) and Colin, who is her love interest, is the one who finds out first. That part is important for him be the one to find out first, not Eloise. So I'm highly disappointed what they did in the show. Especially her being found out, not once but twice.
I know eloise hasnt always been the best but it's so not right to defend penelope's actions when she was clearly wrong about the gossip thing and even more for the last blow. I can't believe people try to justify pen's mistakes by saying eloise made some of her own. Hold them both accountable. There arent any excuses for both of them but let them both grow.

It’s true that Pen messed up but Eloise doesn’t realize that she and Penelope are on two sides of the same coin. Eloise is born into a wealthy and popular family, has many prospects at her disposal, and will always have her brothers to care for her if she doesn’t marry.
Penelope on the other hand has not one suitor on her doorstep, gets belittled and ignored by everyone in society, and even her own family often think of her as an afterthought and emotionally abuse her at home, especially her mother. Eloise has many people who love and care for her while Penelope has little to no one at her corner.

Almost ruined? You act like the Bridgertons don't do a lot of that themselves and that somehow they manage to get out of it. Eloise was the one being careless and got herself into a scandalous situation. Pen yes wrote it down and changed the circumstances, but she was also forced into that when the Queen was ready to black sheep the whole family because of Eloise's actions and there wasn't much else Pen could do. If she had went to the Queen and confessed, do you think she would believe her? Believe that unnoticed, ignored Pen would do all of that? I personally felt like penelope was controlling herself around eloise when she was trying to find out who lady whistledown is. When eloise finally decides to stop searching and tells pen, pen loosens up in happiness that she's no longer in danger of getting exposed that she loosens up a bit, immediately gossiping with eloise.
Like, she never gossiped with eloise before. This is further backed up by the fact that she had a moment where she gossips with colin, knowing certainly that he wouldn't search for or realise who lady whostledown was.
No that is not what happened. Pen was extremely manipulative and calculated. She never let El see that side of her. El even stated that it was the first time Pen ever spoke like that. El noticed it immediately. People only defend Pen out of pitty, and because they can relate to the "fat, undesirable girl" trope. If you remove the fact that Pen is fat, most people would have no sympathy for her.

But if only they could work it out like since El found out who Lady Whistledown is, she might find it in her heart to understand Pen more since El hunted LW for her own self-interests anw. El wanted LW to write something about women's right to pursue other careers. El didn't really care much about how she is viewed in society, but if they could both fix the conflict, maybe there will come a time when they will both manage the Lady Whistledown persona. That'll be OP since they'll have the power to change how society views certain norms because everybody believes LW more than the Queen herself. El wanted to convince LW to write something that would change certain norms like how women should pursue other careers. She's just betrayed at the moment cos she never thought LW will be someone very very close to her. She's confronted with the conflict between whether to disclose LW to the queen to clear out her name, or protect her best friend. Everybody listens to LW more than the Queen. Lol even the Queen is agitated by what LW writes. LW is the culture and wont come down easily. I doubt they will disclose her to the queen.

I Love both and Penelope's Lady Whistledown 🐝 This scene put me in a strange mix of feelings: 💔/💃
I mean both were in the wrong here. Like for starters it was wrong of Penelope to have kept secret towards Eloise and Eloise were in the wrong for not paying attention to Penelope and don’t show gratitude back! I mean they both aren’t perfect but don’t change the fact that they are human. But I hope one day they forgive each other and move past it I know it might take long for a while
I like this show and I love this conflict cuz no ones the good guy. Yes, Eloise is the victim but her personality is one that constantly fails to think about other people(someone loves them and cares but doesn't think of them before herself) and it makes her narrow-minded and makes her feel morally superior even when she's doing something wrong. While Penelope is the villain in this but her 2 of the biggest scandals she drops are to help Colin and Eloise. Agree with her or not she saved Colin from being baby trapped by someone who saw him as a decent means to an end(plus her cousin knew she had a crush on Colin she kept pursuing him even though she had other matches) and she also saved Eloise for whatever punishment the Queen was going to give her for believing she was Lady Whistledown.
So complicated. So good. Can't wait to the next season.
The opinions on these two are really interesting. Its funny because I really like both of them. I think they are among my favourite characters.
I like that this show has realistic people. These are characters that have their own priorities and motivations. They arent perfect all the time. They do irrational things, get jealous, vindicative and mess us really badly. Just like real people.
But, they also have moments where they do care and want to be better. And even the "villians" usually have moments where they aren't just an extreme depiction of evil. I find them likeable even with all their mistakes. Which, I often don't. Lol Even Lady Featherington had a moment that really humanized her to me.
I am really heartbroken as to what happened to their friendship in the second season. I am really looking forward on how the third season will mend their broken friendship. I badly wanted these two to reunite.🥺

Eloise is fun and feisty and I love her, but she was a straight up b**ch to Penelope this episode. And I was SOOOO disappointed in Colin when he said he'd never court her! I relate to Pen so much. A writer, a wallflower, and "two stone heaver than I should be." But I'm not as brave as she is, to brave the perils of the world and just DO something. I admire her, and of course, I love Nicola Coughlan, she's a wonderful actress and plays the role perfectly!

I don't think Eloise is going to be mad for too long. In the books, she was proud of Pen and in the show, she talks about how it's admirable that Lady Whistledown has made a life for herself. She just has to be more selfless and Pen has to stand up for her self and speak out more and they'll be good.

People upset with Pen for putting Eloise in a Scandle clearly forget that the Queen has been trying to arrest Lady Whistledown since season 1. So while Pen temporarily tarnished Eloise's reputation, she was trying to save her life.
Also her outing of Marina was to protect Colin, while yes she loved Colin, she long ago accepted she could not have him. If Marina wasnt trying to baby trap him, i think she would have been fine (but sad) with them together. Because it was two people she genuinely cared about. On the other hand she had been shit talking her own family, including herself, from day one. (especially seen in the books)
What Penelope did to Eloise was wrong, but the way I see it.. she had no choice. Queen Charlotte was fully convinced that Eloise was Lady Whistledown and threatened to destroy her and the Bridgerton family if she didn’t “come forward”. Pen wrote something that Eloise would NEVER write about herself.. and it took the Queen’s suspicions away from Eloise. Had Penelope NOT done that- had she stayed silent- Eloise and her family’s reputation would FOREVER be ruined.. it would’ve been a scandal that the Bridgerton family would NEVER recover from. If Penelope revealed herself to the Queen as Lady Whistledown, the Queen would’ve seen Penelope as a friend helping a friend. She NEVER would’ve been taken seriously.
Which means that Pen, in a way, saved Eloise from Queen Charlotte.
Eloise was being a hypocrite. She would always talk about her distaste for the societal expectations for women in The Ton and had ambitions about “breaking free from the rules of society”.. yet she never actually attempted to do anything.
After all, actions speak louder than words.

Marina Thompson was never ruined okay? She was pregnant she was not a whore she simply was in love. But then when she lost hopes on her lover she thought it would be better to marry a nice man who could provide and love which was colin. Pen knew that colin being a gentleman would still marry marina knowing she's with someone else's child disclosed to the whole world by misusing her powers that marina was with a child so that if not for colin then the society would not let them be together so that she, pen could have her chance with colin being the desperate attention seeker she is for colin. She was jealous of Marina Thompson it was obvious in season 1 but it was also evident in s2 whenever colin mentioned of Marina she would sulk and be a ___ she is. Marina still showed how nice she is by telling colin to give attention to people who genuinely care for him like Penelope. Everything Eloise said was true and made me cry, but what Pen said about how she just talks is true as well. Eloise is a privileged with both beauty and status and even if she doesn’t get married she’ll always have a loving family to stay with. Her attitude would be considered “rebellious” but for Pen she’s been trapped and her gateway was to tell the secrets of others.
I don’t understand how should feel bout Pen cuz she has hurt more good people than helped.

Are we just going to ignore how pen outed marina Thompson her own cousin to the whole country that could have ruined her life had it not been for mr crane. And how she literally ruined eloise's life by saying she's having encounters with a low class guy theo. And how she literally to protect her identity threatened her bffs life including her family's?
I like the way they portrayed it in the show. Let me tell you why because Eloise and Pen are different from their book counterparts and I'm here for it. Remember, Penelope is a very flawed character that needs room to grow. She was always flawed and insecure...i mean, she's the writer of a gossip column. What's more insecure than that (very fun though). And Eloise is detective no. 1. She's always on her toes bro. It makes way more sense for her to be found out by Eloise first and then Colin. Colin's not looking for Whistledown. Eloise is. Pen let down her guard there because she decided to put down her quill and no longer be Whistledown at the time. But of course, Eloise would sniff that out because that's so different from how Pen usually acts around her. Plus Eloise is incredibly sensitive because of her column in the papers revealing her secret with Theo.
In the book, it felt kind of unrealistic about the Whistledown reveal and I feel like in real life, you wouldn't be able to reveal this secret at all because you certainly won't be able to live a normal life after the fact. Bridges would be burnt. Having it depicted in real life kind of shows it more realistically. I mean, she's talking shit about everyone. Even if Pen didn't write about Eloise's secret with Theo, Eloise would've still been upset because that's my best friend and she's seen me desperately looking for her everywhere and she hasn't dared confided with me. I'd assume Eloise would've felt kind of insulted regardless because it was as if she was best friends with a different person the entire time. I'd feel a bit threatened and low-key scared. Whistledown has the power to scar livelihoods permanently. This shouldn't be light and amazing for Eloise regardless if Pen had written about her or not. Y'all really wanted her to be happy if it had went just like the books? That would've been so underwhelming

Ngl Eloise and Pen were not great friends to each other, but I feel for Penelope bc Eloise was sheltered in a way Penelope never was and she felt she wouldn’t understand the financial troubles of her position. She also wanted to make a difference, she wasn’t wrong that Eloise is sheltered and entitled, but I think she misjudged her friend in assuming Eloise wouldn’t grow and learn for her. Penelope didn’t trust and communicate with her friend. Eloise lacked empathy and understanding for Penelope, was very quick to pass judgment, which is partly due to her being so sheltered. She has always been empowered in her family and given a choice by her brothers, where the financial aspect of choosing a relationship never been something she’s ever thought about. So of course she’d never be able to understand the financial and power motivations behind Penelope’s actions. So they both weren’t good friends in a way to each other. On one hand Pénélope didn’t trust her friend, didn’t communicate and wasn’t honest with her, on the other hand, Eloise was quick to pass judgment and lacked empathy, as well as was unwilling to listen to her friend proving, in a way, Penelope’s fears right.
