i think my eyes is a very well done song. the verse is very fast spoken at the end and it bounces around the place and he is portraying his thoughts in the way he perceived them, as he ends the verse with "if i gave you a day in my life or a day in my eyes, don't blink." i think he's showing that he does acknowledge his mistake, but his life he is going around everywhere trying to provide good entertainment and trying to live his life. i think that the rest of the album is this one sided character of him trying to throw the biggest rager and the biggest show, and then then there are shining moments where his actually persona comes thru. i think that this album is trying to show that travis scott has his problems in life that he likes to hide by doing his music which is his utopia, and even in utopia, you can't escape your mind.
I rather the album not address the tragedy, I’d rather him talk about it and address it another way. I go to Travis for vibes not lyrics so I don’t want to go back to the album and be constantly reminded that people died, it should be addressed in a better way just I don’t think his music is a great way to do that. Also you can’t go into a Travis album and be disappointed it’s not a lyrical self reflection masterpiece like Kendrick, I go to hear crazy production and vibes, saying Travis isn’t lyrical on these feels like you saying the sky’s blue like yea no shi
You don’t need to be Kendrick to have good lyrics, the problem with this album for me is that normally Travis’ lyrics are just boring and inoffensive, but here they are either boring or weirdly calling back to the tragedy. It makes him look simultaneously devoid of personality and look like a terrible person. So that in addition to the derivative production makes for a pretty lacklustre project imo
that’s the thing though, he addressed it with his mid apology, and then he talked about it for 1 line and just went back to glorifying the culture that led to it happening in the first place
@@charliebrackenbury6115 I’m not saying you need to be Kendrick but when people keep criticizing the lyrical content not being that good it’s like yea it’s never been so why is it an issue now? And for me I get the Kanye comparisons and derivative nature of the production but I like it derivative or not, Ik he ain’t s great person but that why personally I separate art from artist, I do that with Kanye too, not everyone wants to or can do that which I get

You guys brought up some great points about the tone of this album, and it allows me to apply it to my own perspective, and see some things I didn’t pick up on before. Great review
They didn't, they just said based on the history and what happened, those lines can be read in bad taste. I doubt they think Travis wrote those lines referencing the tragedy, but he easily could rap about other shit.
36:55 i don’t wanna be that guy but as someone who’s been deep into the world of Kanye leaks/unreleased music for over a year now, I can confidently tell you juice wrld was never on Future Sounds/Telekinesis
It is a great album. It feels like you guys just don’t want to like the album. Out of 100 videos this was the 1 I couldn’t get down with. Nonetheless great review, hoping to see more of these where you go this in depth.
I don't like judging the album based on expectations of how and how much he should've talked about the tragedy, "it's not about him" I get that, but he can only talk about how he feels, on his album, I just don't really know what you're expecting him to say?
I get it, but at the same time I felt like we were past the point where every word Travis says is connected to the tragedy at his concert. I agree in every way that what he says has weight and that everything that happened should be dealt with a certain sensitivity, but every single lyric being related to that I think is a little unrealistic to his vision and over-focused on it, particularly when considering this album as a distinct body of work.
I don’t think we’re past that point at all. This is his first body of work since the tragedy occurred and he was absolutely working on this album when it took place. And if including lines about ragers and crowded concerts is integral to his vision, then the boys are probably right that he doesn’t have much substance as an artist, at least lyrically.
@@CatchainlockI think it’s a little much to almost expect like an obituary as an album. Yeah people died and what not but this is Utopia. A Utopia is subjective to the person. If Travis likes to rage and whatever then that is something included in his Utopia. I don’t know why he would redraft an album just because people died at his concert. They are calling him a surface level artist but then want to link all out of context bars to what happened. I was there. And it is a really sad thing. But I think that how I feel weighs less than the families of people that died but more than someone who wasn’t there. It’s just time to move on. I think anyone who has a brain learns from mistakes. Especially being as successful as him. But I don’t think that you can really judge a character based on indirect lyrics. We don’t know him.
@@nialjohnson4499 i dont understand that point eather. If you think he is a surface level artist and ther isnt any substance in his lyric you dont have to pick every surface level lyric und interpretate the shit out of it to the tragedy. Obviously travis couldve been more sensitive about the incident but i dont know why people expected him to change his whole identity as an artist because of it.
@@nialjohnson4499 never said it needed to be an obituary, just take out a handful of bars that make you look insensitive. That's it. He's not known for his lyricism, those songs would've been exactly the same had he replaced those bars with anything else. Success does not mean you're more likely to learn from mistakes, money doesn't fix stupid.
@@Catchainlockthen don’t listen. Travis Scott is Travis Scott because of what he raps about and the energy he brings to the stage. We will continue to enjoy it and go to the shows for that reason you don’t have to…
no they didn’t lol, they just held him to some standard of accountability. they didn’t even say anything that crazy, just that it was a bit insensitive
honestly before watching this video i loved this album but hearing you guys dig so deep into it has really changed the way i view it. sonically i still really like but i appreciate you bringing out the dark side to trav as well and showing he isnt this god amongst that i feel some people view him as. also love the more serious videos from yall truly the best music channel out there
Idk if the SZA verse is actually about Drake, but you can add to the theory by pointing that the flow she uses while saying those lines is an interpolation of one of the flows that Drake uses in his song “Marvins Room”.
I didn’t love everything about the album, but they go WAY too hard on it. Travis isn’t a good dude, but they clearly are letting their opinions on his controversies affect their review. Brad Taste in Music did a great review on this album where he openly states that he thinks Travis is an awful person, but still gives it a fair review and ends up liking it. It seems liked they liked the album on first listen, then just kept trying to find reasons to hate it after, which is not how music is meant to be listened to. Bad people don’t always make bad music.
Agreed, too me this review seems way too personal, I feel like they tried to find every little negative thing wrong with the album, and glorify those negatives as much as they can, if you can’t review an artist work without being biased you shouldn’t review their work.
Yeah i guess one way to interpret their opinion is that the lyrical content is bringing the album down instead of just being a non factor. Like trav is trying to deliver a message and he fails. And then the sounds aren't enough to redeem it because it often just recycles sounds straight up. And he leans way too much on feats. Similar issues with the uzi album tbh
It’s hard to separate the art from the artist when they constantly remind you of what they did wrong. Like I love old Kanye but I still cringe and feel uncomfortable with the “hating the paparazzi more than the nazis” bar. I think Travis either needed to make a nuanced examination of the tragedy (which was never going to happen) or just not mention his shows or the tragedy at all for me to feel comfortable listening to this one which he did not do
@@charliebrackenbury6115 I tend to tune out his lyrics so I personally am not reminded out it, at least despite when he says festival on sirens, I get that people feel that way, personally I don’t but I also don’t want to convince people to look at it the way I do, I rather him address it in a better way that isn’t music because I don’t think he’s capable of making a genuine apology thru music but I also feel like he either talks about it too much or too little there’s no winning in the eyes of the public
So basically they have an issue with Travis not showing any remorse at all for astroworld and the general reaction of the comments is that they don’t care. People this is the reason that celebrities can get away with doing shit like this, because they aren’t punished for it at all.
Exactly! I’m so sick of people acting like I’m crazy for feeling uncomfortable about his complete lack of remorse and compassion for the situation. It’s actually mind blowing the support he still gets
@@charliebrackenbury6115 yeah I completely agree. especially for an artist whose music is so much about the vibe, i just can’t vibe with it given what happened
Idk man. I cant stand but love this album. To be honest, there isnt a moment on this album i dont dislike and ill think it’ll definitely age better than astroworld, idk about rodeo though.
Feels like you guys are struggling to give Travis credit in places where it’s due a bit here. He’s not “Kanye’s Puppet”, he’s worked with Kanye since Yeezus and it can be assumed he played a large role in developing this production style with him. The tracks he used as reference weren’t just “Kanye’s throwaways”, those are clearly songs they both worked on together seeing as how he was already on the songs. You say Travis “just runs around the room” while features record their roles and Kanye is some genius mastermind in the booth, yet you talk multiple times about how great some of the features are and how they “carried the song”. Idk this album operates in a pretty unique space sonically that we really don’t get to hear a lot, so I think even if it sounds “exactly like yeezus”, how much mainstream music do we get that sounds like this? I think we should applaud ambition and an attempt to create a unique atmosphere when most big artists don’t even care enough to try. All this to say I don’t really care as much as this comment makes it seem, but I had the thought so there it is. Also, this is strictly about music, if Christ himself made this album I’d have the same opinion on it.
Fax, people dont seem to understand that Travis is one of the people who worked on Yeezus and even inspired it's sound. It's travis continuing the ideas he had when working on yeezus. Also they heard the Black Skinhead drums on Circus mamixus and completely dismissed the whole song, but let someone like bladee do that and Riley would be calling it genius
@@jackv2175i hate how people call circus maximus a complete ripoff as black skinhead like yeah the drums are the same and travis pays tribute to it with like 1 bar but the song develops into a whole different vibe and is way more chill than the actual black skinhead which is more industrial/metal inspired
@@bonkknob3240yeah and a lot of the production on yeezus was already done by death grips and daft punk and etc before. music is cyclical artists borrow from eachother all the time you can make something unique out of other things which travis is doing here
@fuckitvic I'm just saying he wrote a lot for this album and anything could be taken out of context. He shouldn't have to compromise what he wrote because you could stretch and relate it back to astroworld. Like I feel like if he made that connection he would've changed it, but also it's only the audiences fault if they take it out of the context of the song
He’s also plainly wrong on his musical claims (ex. Skitzo/NMPILA having “the same flow”) (Thank God being an FML ripoff, when Thank God was originally a Kanye song, so if anything, it would have been Kanye not being creative enough- but even so, Thank God doesn’t sound similar to FML)
@@Magic7ballI think he’s saying they’re trying to hard to relate them to what happened at astroworld, especially considering many of the songs were made before the catastrophe even happened
Not every reference to his concerts is directly a reference to Astroworld. When he’s talking about resizing he’s clearly talking about growing in size as an artist and playing bigger venues. Crazy that you can’t see that.
Maybe that was his intention, but when several people died because you had too many people in too small of a venue, to go "im so awesome i need bigger venues" is a tasteless flex.
@@billhoult3262 it had nothing to do with the size of the venue though. It was due to brainless fans storming the gates past lacklustre security without tickets and therefore ending up with an overcrowded venue.
“MY EYES” is also produced by Buddy Ross and Vegyn, two of the producers that literally helped define Frank Ocean’s “blonde” and “Endless” era. That’s why that song sounds just like that. I’m so disappointed with that song, because the intro with Justin Vernon’s vocals is so beautiful and heartfelt, and it had me thinking we were actually going to get an introspective performance from Travis; but as soon as his hook starts with “One thousand on my feet // stacks spreaded on my seat” I literally sunk into my chair and groaned. It’s almost like Travis Scott can’t help himself BUT be surface level. Anyways those are my thoughts, great review, love y’all !
Wish y’all spoke about LOST FOREVER, Westside Gunn’s feature is amazing and would’ve loved to hear your thoughts. Great breakdown of the album overall though 👏

i liked some of the lyrics, for example u missed what he said about kylie in “my eyes” - “the yellow and green in your eyes blah blah blah” -referencing her eyes bc on a interview together she asked travis what color her eyes are, and he replied something about her eyes being green but become yellow in a certain weather or something like that. was pretty lowkey and clever and something many people wont get.
Strong disagree on the album grade. I think its a fantastic album sound. Whatever you think about Travis (which if its he's a prick I defiantly wouldn't correct you), I think you should be able to separate him and the great music
i personally super agree with it. horrid travis performance and lyrics on a travis album = bad album. bad ethics behind it too, also incredibly lazy. so many songs om this feel super duper fake and like an attempt to appeal to music fans because travis cant do it himself so he must steal from other successful artists. how can you listen to the attempts to bring up astroworld and think, yeah, shits fantastic
legit 0 travis performancea added really anything good to tracks, he was essencially filler & a huge sleezebag the entire album. who the fuck puts those lines on a frank ocean type song, then immediately follow it up with a line about his dick??? hes a horrible person clearly, nothing about this album paints him in a good light.
@@kevinhirschowitz8550 Thats the thing, I dont. I don't listen to Travis for the lyrics, I don't over analyse it, because once you do that of course it wont be as good just play the music, if it sounds good I add it. If I don't like the person why would I go into the lyrics to find what he's talking about. I can easily not listen to lyrics when listening to Travis. Also it is not a horrid travis performance. The artist performance I think is very good with his flows, cadences and some great hooks. And you didn't even mention the production, which is the best production we've had on an album for years
@@hazemore7192 playing music you moraly disagree with just cuz it sounds good and arent willing to listen to the lyrics is stupid. be a more active listener. lyrics are very important to hip hop. yes travis does terribly. hes outshined by just about every feature on it. i cant stand to hear this man use repeated flows, speak cringy boring nothing lyrics, and just overall have 0 charisma. also i did bring up production, what i think about it, is most of the album is boring, and a lot of the songs are lazy copies. anyways hearing good production while the artist makes really bad statements doesnt make a good song.
Might be a stretch, but on the wait on a rack Arabic line, this could also be a reference to an abacus. The numbers wait on the rack, and it was often used to count big numbers (racks) and was (earliest) used in Mesopotamia which is now the middle east, where Kuwait and Iraq are. (Also modern numbers used are the Arabic numeric system)
They did bring up some very solid points but my god did they try to find every little wrong and negative thing about the album for 57 minutes they barley praised it other than the end for like a couple minutes and they only praised the features never Travis these fools just hated for an hour straight
they had some good points but to say every song that had a feature carried travis and that damn near every song is a copy they just were not giving travis any credit and it was just real lame and even the songs they with no features they still failed to praise what he did good
Talking a lot about the Astroworld tragedy during the lyrics segment is important but you skipped a lot a meaningful lyrics during the first few songs especially “my eyes”
I feel like they completely missed the point of "my eyes" it's about him not realizing how powerful his influence is and his overall guilt + how he copes with it.
@@patrick.w6243 the lyrics are incredibly condescending. He elaborates about his guilt minimally and the proceeds to say “you can’t stop the rage.” It’s tasteless

i gotta say it, UTOPIA > the iraq war
Enough time has passed
gotta disagree with you Iraq war is hype af
"You can't be the helpless protagonist at the center of your hurricane" is real as hell
i think my eyes is a very well done song. the verse is very fast spoken at the end and it bounces around the place and he is portraying his thoughts in the way he perceived them, as he ends the verse with "if i gave you a day in my life or a day in my eyes, don't blink." i think he's showing that he does acknowledge his mistake, but his life he is going around everywhere trying to provide good entertainment and trying to live his life. i think that the rest of the album is this one sided character of him trying to throw the biggest rager and the biggest show, and then then there are shining moments where his actually persona comes thru. i think that this album is trying to show that travis scott has his problems in life that he likes to hide by doing his music which is his utopia, and even in utopia, you can't escape your mind.
@@cdw2468should he make a whole album addressing it tho. I feel like if he did that it would be to make people who isn’t fans happy.
@@charliebrackenbury6115you have to consider that he probably made nearly all of this album before the tragedy
@@charliebrackenbury6115 I’m not saying you need to be Kendrick but when people keep criticizing the lyrical content not being that good it’s like yea it’s never been so why is it an issue now? He wasn’t lyrical on astroworld but I rarely ever heard that complaint but here I see it ever where, I guess I’m saying what did y’all expect, do I wish it was better sure but I know that’s not the musician he is so I don’t expect it. And for me I get the Kanye comparisons and derivative nature of the production but I like it derivative or not, Ik he ain’t s great person but that why personally I separate art from artist, I do that with Kanye too, not everyone wants to or can do that which I get

You catch bar meanings I never thought of, and I get to see your opinions and perspective of more serious subjects. I get to connect to more of your “real” personalities. This is actually a perfect review of the album, they nailed all the right points. Would love to see more album reviews from them
This their “MBDTF is a 6/10”
i like how they made every single lyric seem like it was about astroworld incident
Exactly lol it was kinda ridiculous ngl
Ludicrous
They didn't, they just said based on the history and what happened, those lines can be read in bad taste. I doubt they think Travis wrote those lines referencing the tragedy, but he easily could rap about other shit.

I think they just expected more. I disagree with their review but I clearly see their reasoning.
or they just didnt like it as much lol
I don't like judging the album based on expectations of how and how much he should've talked about the tragedy, "it's not about him" I get that, but he can only talk about how he feels, on his album, I just don't really know what you're expecting him to say?
"great review but i want you to agree with me"

I love how its immediately recognizable that DJ Grant isn't present, this video was lacking from the "Cackles Behind The Camera" department
We will continue to enjoy it and go to the shows for that reason you don’t have to…
Y'all talk about the Astroworld tragedy like Travis pulled out an AK and sprayed the crowd.
no they didn’t lol, they just held him to some standard of accountability. they didn’t even say anything that crazy, just that it was a bit insensitive
@@cdw2468 idk man they were reaching harder than diggy when i broke both his legs
riley doesnt look a day over 62 tbh
honestly before watching this video i loved this album but hearing you guys dig so deep into it has really changed the way i view it. sonically i still really like but i appreciate you bringing out the dark side to trav as well and showing he isnt this god amongst that i feel some people view him as. also love the more serious videos from yall truly the best music channel out there
Changing your opinion based on 2 UA-camrs is crazy
I don’t think most sane people view Travis as a god💀
I can separate art from artist, I like the music but idc about the person, they’re clearly just viewing it from the tragedy lens which is unfair imo
White artists get away with it and do but not black artists they are cancelled and harassed.
My ranking: 1. Rodeo
2. Utopia
3. Astroworld
4. Birds
Idk man. I cant stand but love this album. To be honest, there isnt a moment on this album i dont dislike and ill think it’ll definitely age better than astroworld, idk about rodeo though.
I hate this channel and I feel sick when I watch these videos. Keep up the great work boys!
This whole review just seemed extremely bitter. They usual seem so much more likable.
Fax, people dont seem to understand that Travis is one of the people who worked on Yeezus and even inspired it's sound. It's travis continuing the ideas he had when working on yeezus. Also they heard the Black Skinhead drums on Circus mamixus and completely dismissed the whole song, but let someone like bladee do that and Riley would be calling it genius
is it ambitious to try yeezus production? that’s already been done lol
@@jackv2175i hate how people call circus maximus a complete ripoff as black skinhead like yeah the drums are the same and travis pays tribute to it with like 1 bar but the song develops into a whole different vibe and is way more chill than the actual black skinhead which is more industrial/metal inspired
@@bonkknob3240yeah and a lot of the production on yeezus was already done by death grips and daft punk and etc before. music is cyclical artists borrow from eachother all the time you can make something unique out of other things which travis is doing here
Okay but you can't expect him to go through every line that could maybe possibly have something to do with astroworld.
@fuckitvic maybe compromise is the wrong word. But I think your right that maybe my eyes should've been an exception.
the nitpicking at the end from riley is so funny LMAO
virtue signaling aint the move
He’s also plainly wrong on his musical claims
(ex. Skitzo/NMPILA having “the same flow”)
(Thank God being an FML ripoff, when Thank God was originally a Kanye song, so if anything, it would have been Kanye not being creative enough- but even so, Thank God doesn’t sound similar to FML)
teezo touchdown sounding like the guy from animal collective is crazy accurate
My Eyes wasn't a sample from the Japanese House, it was a handover from Bon Iver. He gave the same sample to both.
You 2 are looking way to deep into the lyrics regarding his concerts tbh
why are the lyrics there if you arent supposed to look at them
@@Magic7ballI think he’s saying they’re trying to hard to relate them to what happened at astroworld, especially considering many of the songs were made before the catastrophe even happened
@@Kittenlebron i mean i dont think it matters when they were made. they were still released now.

Anyways those are my thoughts, great review, love y’all !

i personally super agree with it. horrid travis performance and lyrics on a travis album = bad album. bad ethics behind it too, also incredibly lazy. so many songs om this feel super duper fake and like an attempt to appeal to music fans because travis cant do it himself so he must steal from other successful artists.
how can you listen to the attempts to bring up astroworld and think, yeah, shits fantastic
