Great video and yes you can fight fire with fire. It is used to fight bush fires. You would call them wild fires. The technique is called a back burn. The idea is to burn all the fuel in front of the of the advancing bush or wild fire and hence starve it out. This technique obviously would never be used in a house fire.
The idea of literally fighting fire with fire is that you set a fire to burn down _all_ the fuel for the other fire at a particular point, to create a barrier the other fire cannot cross. If you control the fire you set properly, you can extinguish it once it finishes burning what you want it to, and everything on the other side of the burn line / perimiter / etc. from the main fire will be protected.
What a beautiful yet tense endgame.. thank you for covering this.
you can fight fire with fire, the idea is you burn an area with a small controlled fire stopping the fire from spreading as there is nothing to burn
3D chess
to think magnus calculated all that with like 10 seconds including the under promote
ridiculous
Magnus: doesn't want to commit pawns.
Also Magnus: pushing every kingside pawn
8:06 Levy just casually blundering a full rook
In terms of fighting fire with fire, controlled burns can be used as a way of making sure wildfires don't start. You can also burn out a big line to stop a fire from spreading further. So I guess you *can* fight fire with fire but it's less about putting the fire out and more stopping it starting / spreading
Ok but who asked?

That game was fire. The moment Magnus promoted to a Knight, Vishy was so surprised, he did not expect it. He smiled at Magnus because it was in that moment he knew he was fluffed 😂 Magnus is from another world ❤
6:00 So fighting fire with fire is a saying that goes back to westward expansion, and it refers to the fact that the best way to stop a wildfire racing through a prairie is to light a second fire that is heading towards the one burning out of control. The fire that you’ve sent towards the out of control fire will burn up all of the available fuel for the out of control fire (ie: it’s gonna burn all the prairie in the path of the wildfire) and so, when the two fires eventually meet each other, there is no more grass in the area to fuel the fire, and so they both burn out.
Great video! I really like these instructive game coverages where you explain it in depth and not just speed through the moves.
That end-game was just insane tbh
Thank you levy! For giving us chess content while being held hostage
Fire fighters sometimes do a controlled burn in front of a fire so the out of control fire won’t be able to spread. That’s kinda fighting fire with fire
I am a firefighter and they use sometimes fire to attack fire, when there is a bushfire they do a controlled fire on the edge of the fire so when the real fire comes there is nothing left to be burned and that helps a lot.
You the best Levy for keeping up with content even on your trip. Hope you're enjoying yourself out there!
Would like to always see magnus' side of the board in any game.
As a firefighter, you can fight fire with fire in very certain cases, for an example, you could make a small, controlled fire to cut off some of the fuel from a bigger fire, however it's much easier just to make a fireline, which basicly just clears any potential fuel sources so the fire can die down on its own.
Magnus tweeted that he didn't see the stalemate, and only promoted to a knight because he couldn't ind the queen
The jokes today were very funny. The Norwegian horse dance bit was hilarious. But it wasn’t the Norwegian man who got kicked in the head by the horse. It was the Norwegian Wood-pusher whose pawn spawned (the “S” pawn) and Vishy couldn’t wake up from his knightmare.
Hearing Levy breathe into the mic every 3 seconds is actually kind of satisfying
Not a firefighter by any means, but I think you actually can fight fire with fire (in a way.) Essentially, you can stop the spread of a fire by burning whatever's in its path through the means of a smaller, more controlled fire, so that anything which the bigger, more problematic fire can burn (and thus spread through) is already consumed by the time the big fire arrives, essentially smothering it. Generally I think this strategy is only used in emergencies, and mostly in wildfire as opposed to urban fire situations.
This is hardcore chess. This players dont mind losing. People normally try to play for draw in that situation
Magnus is at a stage of his career, where he is just trolling on too level
I think it's a good idea
Lmao
6:00, This is called a "controlled fire", and it's used to destroy vegetation so that an out of control fire has nothing to "eat," thus causing it it stop spreading.
fighting fire with fire is a term that comes from firefighters using small controlled burns to cut off a major fire's "food supply" and blocking the fire from spreading.
I hadn't laughed so hard with Levy in a long time. Thank you.
Sorry, I think that the sentence is misspelled, english is not my mother language

Wow, Magnus wins from a equal position is crazy.
That was insane for magnus to find that knight promotion to avoid the draw. Vishy was shocked to see that move, and regretted his knight sac earlier.
I'm a volunteer firefighter in Australia, and you can actually fight fire with fire, so to speak, in a process called back-burning. Basically, you pre-burn an area ahead of the fire that you keep under control, so there is no fuel to keep the main fire going. It does depend a lot on the circumstances, though (weather conditions, size of the main fire, landscape, etc).
Levy, appreciation post! Taking the time during vacation so entertain us. Just like Magnus - never letting us down. You're the man!
finally a comment that talks about levy’s location without joking about him being “hostage”. seriously it isnt funny anymore.
No Levy, we can’t ban Magnus Carlsem
:(
Fire can be fought with fire. The two co texts are in forest fire fighting where you burn the underbrush to make fire lines (reigns without fuel that the fire can burn) to contain fires. The second is in the case of a oil spill/well fire, you can use an explosive to push the burning gasses and air away, momentarily smothering the flames and stopping the fire so that repairs and cleanup can occur.
Imagine being the pawn so excited to be promoted to a Queen then end up being promoted to a knight
Respect for uploading while kidnapped
I’m betting a dollar Levy changes the title at least twice in the next 12 hours and uploads a short tomorrow.
Aight bet
You can fight fire with fire buy doing a controlled burn to create a sizeable gap between where a fire is and where it's spreading. Basically you burn a section of forest down wind of a fire and take away that fuel in a controlled way so it can't spread anywhere passed your burn line.
In white opening, knight f3 is amazing move.
I like how the video is called "Magnus Carlsen's Greatest Endgame" and it is undeniably a spectacular performance, but if you check the engine lines around 15:38 after Kc1 you'll realize that the engine gives like -5 in black's favor and that Magnus actually BLUNDERED a draw in the next few moves (specifically after playing Kd4 instead of Kxb4). Engines are absolutely crazy man
Fire is used to fight fire in forestry. When you've a wildfire burning, the technique is to light a controlled "back fire" a few hours in front of the main flame front to starve it of fuel.
I guess the analogy works as Magnus starves the K-side of play towards the end of the opening.
I am Australian and this country is literally supposed to be on fire on a regular basis, in fact there are seed pods that only open after a fire. Also my mother used to work for the national parks so I can offer the following information about fighting fire with fire: you can pre-burn all the flammable materials like dry leaves and sticks in a controlled way so that they cannot fuel a fire later on. This is called back-burning.
In wildland fire fighting there is a process called back fire or controlled burning in which you can help prevent forest fires by buring away thick under dry under growth that would allow fire to quickly spread from tree to tree in an uncontrolled fire.
This man is too funny😂 you’re a product of the social media machine in the modern era

Bro has balls to call magnus carlsen "stupid" 💀
you fight wild fires, with fire, by burning the "fuel" ahead of the fire, it's easy to control the small fire.... and the large fire burns itself out faster.
Forest fires are sometimes fought by starting back burns in front of the fire. So when the larger fire reaches that burned area it has no fuel.
Levy hold your breath for 5 minutes if you are held hostage, people are worried about you
i swear you are on literally every video i watch first coldfusion now this
Magnus trolling people on twitter saying he couldn't find a queen is just peak everything. 😆
Fire can be used to fight forest fires, albeit with a certain amount of risk. A controlled burn of a strip of forest will create a barrier to an oncoming forest fire as it will use up all the available fuel.
you can burn a "fire line" in the path of a fire to hopefully prevent further advance
bro has to stop with these silly names for his videos before he loses his fanbase because im getting annoyed fr
In Gotham we trust 💪
when there is no wind you can control-burn a section meters from the actual fire to stop its propagation, so i guess yeah you can fight fire with fire
ofc Idk but likely fighting fire with fire refers to creating a fire break to limit a fire's growth. Usually the break is in the forest but sometimes a person's home is in the path of the fire so it is destroyed before the fire can growth thru it.
This man is literally being held hostage and worries about banning Magnus Carlsen from chess
I'm genuinely worried for Levy now. He genuinely looks like he's being held hostage. I'm not even joking anymore, I'm actually genuinely worried. Can we get someone to find him to check up on him?
dont worry dude. ignore those cringe comments joking about how hes “hostage”. they arent funny anymore. also levy himself said that he is taking a break on a vacation. so there isnt anything to worry about.
@@ep_ion1112bruh what you talkin
not a fire fighter but in army and we in croatia sometimes help the fireman in big fires.. Yes biggest hardest fires are beaten with fire from the opposite direction
Bro is making videos in his vacation we should appreciate him
Hello Levy, can you make a short video on the different chess database and the one you consider best (and the free one for beginners)
6:00
Yes, for example, in the case of forest fires, we can define the boundary of the fire by causing a controlled fire at a given point (at the boundary). In this way, the fire should not penetrate deeper (we will take away its fuel)
"Fighting fire with fire" comes from a technique for containing forest fires, where you move a certain distance ahead of the fire and do a controlled burn of a specific distance, so when the big fire gets there, it has nothing left to burn.
Or maybe it doesnt, maybe i made that up. Who knows?
Yes, you can actually fight fire with fire. In the case of forest fires, you burn down some parts of the forest intentionally so that the initial fire doesn't spread out too far to the point that it's irreversible damage
The funny thing is that I had just watched an Anand - Carlsen game from the 2014 Rapid Championship in Dubai where Carlsen totally blunders the endgame like I would.
A fire line is one way to fight fire with fire.
In area wildfires you can do controlled burning of lanes of vegetation to deny wildfire possible direction of spreading.
controlled fires can be used to limit the spread of out of control fires
An example of fighting fire with fire is when a oilline is on fire. The best way to stop the burst is by creating an explosion right on top of it.
Wow, this chess video is absolutely captivating! The players' moves are so calculated and intense, keeping me on the edge of my seat. It's like witnessing a mind-bending dance of strategy and brilliance. Absolutely love it!
By the way, an interesting trivia fact. The photographer is himself an incredible 3-check player on lichess. I saw him beating a few masters in an Arena (in 3-check.)
The background is far superior now. Those lava lamps and stuff is so eighties.
If you're curious about fighting fire with fire, Australia uses drip torches to backburn bushland to prevent fire spreading into populated areas
You do sometimes fight fire with fire. Meaning you sometimes light up a controlled fire in a dry flamable area to ensure that a natural fire won't take over that area and become uncontrollable and dangerous.
(Not a firefirghter)
In fighting Forest fires you can fight them with controlling fires to cut off the fire from a certain path
You fight fire with fire when you do controlled burns to keep forest fires from getting out of control.
