Need to take big leaps forward with mental health funding. Scarring Alopecia is mentally devastating and deserves the same funding and research investment as physical health.
Hi Doctor. I hope you are well. I am very thankful for all of your videos and lectures, and your willingness to share your wealth of information with us for free. I have seen 3 different dermatologists, two of whom have told me that I am experiencing bacterial scalp folliculitis and one who has diagnosed me with folliculitis decalvans. My symptoms are: small, red, mildly itchy pustules, crusting over pustules if they pop (clear pus, no blood), and hair loss in affected areas which does seem to grow back in after some time. The pustules mostly occur on the middle and lower back of my scalp, with a few occurring on the right and left sides of my scalp. I do seem to be experiencing some level of diffuse thinning of hair on top of my scalp, but no pustules seem to be present. This hair thinning has occurred very rapidly, in a span of 3-4 weeks (androgenic alopecia is non-existent in my family), so I could be wrong in assuming that it has anything to do with my condition. I have been taking doxycycline for over a month now, which has seemingly helped greatly reduce the pustules. I was wondering if you could help me with any advice on how to know for certain what I am suffering with? Please let me know if there is any more information that I could provide. This disease has been incredibly debilitating and depressing for me. Thank you again for all that you do.
I’m so glad I found you here ,I been struggling with my hair for about 3 years now after I discontinued birth control pills 3 years ago ,and recently biopsy showed LPP , is there any connection between discontinuing birth control pills and LPP ? The reason for this question is after no one knew where is my hair loss came from they put me back on birth control pills
I would need to examine your scalp and know alot more information. There is no clear link between LPP and stopping birth control pills but there are many types of hair loss that can occur from stopping birth control. These include telogen effluvium and precipitation of androgenetic alopecia. Be sure to see a dermatologist who specializes in hair loss for review. They can assess the situation and help determine if the biopsy is correct or not and whether other hair loss issues are present besides LPP. Many women with early staged androgenetic alopecia find that their AGA is somewhat paused by use or birth control (and may not even know it) and then stopping birth control opens up the pathway for the androgenetic hair loss to move forward. Telogen effluvium is a second cause and happens 3-6 weeks after stopped birth control. Both TE and AGA can appear as shedding although there are other features your doctors will use to differentiate the two entities.
I'm really glad to have found your very informative videos. I have FFA and feel quite terrified of hydroxychloroquine. Would doxycycline be a good alternative? How safe are topical calcineurin inhibitors in terms of occurence of skin cancer and skin lymphomas?
Doxycycline is an alternative, although you would also want to carefully review all the potential side effects with your doctors. For FFA, it is probably similar efficacy as hydroxychloroquine and potentially less effective on average than 5 alpha reductase inhibitors and/or isotretinoin. For FFA patients, occassionally using calcineurin inhibitors, we don't have good evidence of a significant cancer risk. However, you'd want to sit down and review your specific story, skin type and medical history with your doctors to better understand if any potential risk may be present based on all data we have to date. Thanks for the questions.
Hii I have pcos and I have had hairfall for 6 long years in the crown part and it's stagnant that is the area is not widening but have had prp and the progress is less and now after 6 months of treatment with minoxidil and other medications my dr says I should have biopsy done but am scared is there any other alternative to know what condition do I have?
I developed LPP from using henna and indigo hair dye. However, I do not have any burning, itching, or pain. It’s been five years now, and I have lost 50% of my hair. Initially, I was diagnosed with alopecia areata, and most recently I was diagnosed with LPP from another doctor. I do not have any auto immune diseases or health issues. Please help!
I would be honored to help. Please contact my office so I can get more details and perform a proper scalp examination and we can figure out how best to proceed.
Sometimes although sometimes I need to see the scalp up close. I would invite you to contact my team at office@donovanmedical.com and they can give you more information on what' you'll need to submit in order for me to determine if an online appointment is acceptable or not.

Do you take patients online, from another country?
