Binge watching your videos.. I'm recently retired Navy but a San Diego native and I was REALLY interested in seeing this airport bridge crossing to the TJ airport. Thanks Edgar!
CBX bridge is ok. I use it 50/50. They do charge ($16?) for the luxury. Plus parking is $11 a day if your lucky. If you Uber, trolley, etc.. I just cross at San Ysidro. Walk past the taxis that want(?) $20 US. Call an Uber (Lyft doesn't work in Mexico) Expect to get cancelled 1 or 2 times. I guess they get a better deal? But then it's $3 to the airport.
It's easy. If you have your passport you can use the ready lanes. The general lane is fine too. A little longer wait. Just don't accidentally get in the Sentri lane. They hate that. Have a great trip. If you haven't, hope you consider subscribing. Thanks, Joe
You can use the ready lane if you have the RFID symbol on the front of your passport. Or if you have a passport card. It looks like a gold camera, under the United States of America. Usually it's a shorter wait, but check the app Border Wait Times. I walked back a few days ago and saw 10 cars in each general lane at 8pm. The ready lane was backed up 50 cars deep.
@@alexpaz9700 A passport (or passport card) is the appropriate document at any border. That being said, get in the general lane. You might get a lecture (or trip to secondary if the officer thinks your not respecting the border) Just be cool and polite. You'll probably get waived in. If it's gonna be many trips, get the correct document. A passport has been needed at San Ysidro for more than 10 years. Yes, UA-camrs will say I cross each time with a drivers license only. They have to let a US citizen home. That's true, but it could change to welcome home, here's your $400 ticket. Hopefully not, but if you want to travel often, make your life simple. Get a passport and passport card. Leave the passport at home and just bring the passport card. Good for Mexico and Canada only
I always check the app border wait times. Last night I walked across. The ready lane was backed up until the round about by Plaza Rio. The 3 general lanes had 10 cars in each lane. But, I agree general is usually better. Lately if I can I just drive across past 11pm. It's usually less than 20 minutes in general and ready lane. Thanks for checking out my new channel. I hope you consider subscribing. Thanks, Joe
@@CapitalDynastyLLC I believe its just called Border Wait Times. I just google it. Put in San Ysidro, driving, general or ready lanes. Whichever you use.
Did you cross at Otay? That's always been easier with toys. They're used to RV's, etc.. I've been pulled over maybe 50 out of a 500 times at San Ysidro, usually with two or three bikes in a truck bed. No secondary ever, and I'm always holding a photo copy of the registration's. I even have the originals hidden away. One time (probably in error) I was told a photo copy wasn't good enough. It's not a huge problem. I was just letting the new guy know to have a photo copy, just in case. I'd hate to see a guy get turned back into the US, because some 25 year old Mexican customs agent is in a bad mood.
Real good information. I come to Tijuana every 2 weeks and I always leave out of Otay Mesa I’m there on Saturday like around 10 o’clock in the morning and it’s not bad you’re there maybe 40 minutes, the wait is not too bad but don’t leave on a Sunday night you’re there for like four hours here in Otay Mesa so just a little FYI. I find it much easier for me to leave from Otay the San Ysidro!
Thanks for checking out the video. If you haven't, hope you consider subscribing. More Baja in the channel and heading to Thailand when I retire next year. Thanks, Joe
Been there many times and still have a hard time getting to the border .what's the simplest way do i stay on the toll road all the way to the bordet. Plse help.
Just set your phone GPS for Plaza Rio Mall in Tijuana. Anyone in the parking lot will point you to the main street that will take you to the San Ysidro border. It's 1 mile from the mall
This is one of the busiest crossings in the world. Yes there are smaller crossings toward the east. Calexico/Mexicali can also take hours. You really need to cross late at night or get Global Entry or Sentri. Check out my video on Mexican Check Points. It shows me entering Mexicali
@@stacyhernandez2847 If you're a US citizen a passport is all you need. Sometimes they stamp it, sometimes they don't. They never stamp when you return to the US. Passports in San Diego would fill quick. If you live in the US with a green card and hold a Canadian, British, etc.. passport, then you need the green card. That's to return to the US. Mexico changes the rules often. Usually a passport is all you need to enter Mexico. Driving in, you'll rarely be stopped. They waive 90% of cars in. They have a form the FMM (like a tourist visa) that is "usually" free for (I think) 72 hour visits. During the health situation they were demanding you pay $31 for a 180 day FMM. This was their definition of essential travel. That seems to have been relaxed lately. If you walk in, you might have to fill out a free FMM (always say you're going for 5 hours, etc.. Nobody checks this form (if you stay a week, etc..) especially the US when you return) 10 years ago, you had to turn the FMM back in (to Mexican customs) as you left. They ended that. You just toss it. Or save the 180 day form for a future visit. If they start the 180 day thing again, then you'll have to pay. They never enforced the FMM driving into Mexico. Only walking into Mexico. And again, sometimes it's enforced, sometimes it's not. Hopefully the "essential travel only" is a thing of the past. Be polite, but let them know you would like the free FMM form to visit for the afternoon only. They make enough "side cash" with kids entering Mexico without passports. $20 seems to be the current "fee" Have a good trip. Joe
@@EagerExpat last question, i’m planning on going with my cousin but he’s a minor (16 about to turn 17) and i’m 18 does that affect any of the process for us?
@@stacyhernandez2847 not if you have passports. Age doesn't matter. Travel safe and have a great time. I'd appreciate a thumbs up. Helps me with youtube.
I live in Thailand today. My advice would be to apply for Global Entry at the airport. You get head of the line flying and they toss in Sentri at the Mexico borders.
Its up to the agent. I'd say about half the time they open the trunk. Other times they just swipe my passport and say goodbye. But yes, checking the trunk is very common
Two times I been to Tijuana I always so unlucky I end up going on fast lane crossing I forgot the name and they already have me on filed for going on the wrong lane and I’m here looking at videos so next time I go I don’t wanna mess up
Yes that can be a problem. You must have been cool. I believe they can write you an expensive traffic ticket for entering the Sentri Lane without a pass. Best advice is GPS to the Plaza Rio Mall. Drive straight and you'll be in the correct lane. Thanks for watching
just stumbled across your videos and wondered a quick question. heading into Mexico on the weekend and coming back monday is it better to exit through the San Ysidro border or the Tecate border?
Both are fine. San Ysidro is busy anytime the sun is out. Tecate is hit or miss. Very busy when it opens at 6am. I've had good luck at 11am. Closes at 10pm? Have a good trip
I have a time share in Las Palomas Rosarito. I would like to use it for a week. Can you cross the border and return without a problems, just wonder because it is not an essential trip and if it is a vacation. Thank
Yes, the "essential thing" are just words for Mexico City and Tijuana. You can drive in and back without any issues. If you walk in, the customs agents have been using the "essential travel" as an excuse to charge $31 for a tourist visa (valid 180 days). They were charging everyone for 3 or 4 months. Then they stopped. It's suppose to be free for short visits. Just say your going for 2 nights. You might get lucky and get the free FMM visa. Otherwise it may be $31 a person. So it's best to drive if you can. When you return, just be honest with the US agent. I've crossed 100 times(?) into the US since "essential" started. They ask the same basic questions as they have for decades. Have a great trip
Early is good. Lately 5:30 am is getting busy. I can't wait until they open more lanes. Thanks for the comment. If you haven't, I hope you consider subscribing. Joe
The US Passport Card is also good as another form of ID that fits in your wallet like any other similar shape card and especially if your state ID/driving licence is of the older non-`REAL ID´ variety.
Global Entry and Sentri are two cards that are really tough to obtain. I had some weed back in 1976, (in Las Vegas, NV) just a joint or two, maybe three, come to think of it. LOL, Anyway, they denied me those cards only because of that. True story.
Yes I believe you. It's often times zero tolerance. Some reports of folks coming clean with minor offenses (back in the day) have been granted Global Entry. Others not so lucky. I have a buddy who's brother did some bad things at the border in the 1980's. The brother died in the 1990's. My friend has a spotless records, federal worker for 25 years. He was told he can never have Sentri because of the brother
Had a friend with a prior dui and he was denied Sentri but still had to pay processing fee. He was not happy. Another friend was denied because his son is in the marijuana business. I tell my friends to not register at pot dispensaries because it’s still considered an illegal drug in the eyes of the Feds. These things come back and haunt people.
@@maxxsteele11 Yes, I did find out you can use the Ready Lane with the RFID. Although last night the Ready lane was 120 minutes and the general lane was 100 minutes. Luckily I walked.
Where are the entrances in TIJUANA,STREETS to get to the 4 different lanes?: Sentry, Ready Land, All Traffic, and Medical Services... For instance: Calle 2nda/Benito Juarez is the All Traffic. What streets are each one of the 4 different lanes? Otherwise, when you're already crossing you het caught in the wrong lane. Thats a little confusing , cuz I hve lots of friends who by accident got into the SENTRY lane. And you can't,return or change lanes once your in line.. The entrances are not clear to start at the right,or desired lane.🤔😳
My ex was Canadian. She handed her Canadian passport and they said we only need your Green card. I'm not sure but I believe the green card is more important for residents. I'd just bring passport and green card. If you only have a green card, that makes you a legal resident. Should be fine
The drive is 20 miles. In traffic that will be an hour. Crossing the border is the problem. In traffic that can take 3 hours. Watch my video on walking across the border. Save the driving for those that have to drive into Mexico. Keep in mind this is one of the busiest border crossings in the world
Yes, they are fairly flexible. Until some guy in DC tells them overnight to tighten up the rules. They'll always let a US citizen back into the country. But that could come with an expensive ticket at some point in the future. If you want to visit Baja often, it's still best to get a passport and passport card. I once saw a guy get of a 10 hour flight to Japan with me. Japan denied him entry because his passport expired in 2 months. I think 6 months left on a valid passport is the rule. He had to fly home. Japan don't play
I have a question you might be able to answer, I just turned 18 and waiting on my ID to get in through the mail , I don’t have a passport, I have a birth certificate and was wondering if i would be let back in with just that & my permit ?
If you have a right to live on the US they would prefer a passport but you'll be allowed in with a US birth certificate. Another ID especially with a picture will speed up the process.
Good info. I was told the enhanced drivers license is good for Canada, Mexico and some Caribbean too. That's what he said anyhow. I think he had a New York enhanced drivers license
Eager Expert - thanks for this - very helpful. 3 questions - is the procedure at the border still the same today (video is from dec) and can you please share any info regarding doing the crossing with a rented car - those that complicate any thing? also I understand barcode of passports are scanned but do you also have to do the fingerprints like you do at airport?
Hey Yaron. Procedure is the same. I have a buddy who commutes from Tijuana to San Diego each morning. It can be a pain, but more so lately. He had to wait 2 hours this morning and it was 3 hours one day last week. 1 hour is a good day. There have been issues recently with the folks waiting for asylum. There have been attempts to blend in with the people selling things around the waiting cars. Then dozens start running toward the border gates. They go into lockdown, etc.. Hopefully things open back up soon. 23 (I think) gates for cars. Lately, you are lucky if 8 gates are open. Some guy in Washington, DC didn't get the message this is a crazy busy border. As far as a rental car. No major company, Hertz, etc.. that I know off will let you take a rental car into Mexico. If that has changed, please contact an outfit like Baja Bound for a Mexican Insurance policy. Also be aware many of the rental companies have GPS for rent. I would guess it would be a problem if they found out you took the car to Mexico. Plus they do check (99% of the time) the car license when you return to the US. I'm not sure, but that might also be a problem. You can always rent a car in Tijuana if you want to explore Baja. Just triple check you're legal taking the car across the border. As far as the finger print, not at the basic crossing area. If you saw in the video, there is a secondary inspection. In 1000 plus crossings, I've been sent there twice. Once because my Canadian girlfriend didn't bring her green card. So it would be rare, but anything could happen at secondary fingerprint wise. As far as the machines "like the airport" that doesn't happen at any crossing in California or Arizona. I've been to most of them. So yes the crossing is the same today as last Dec. It's also the same as the last decade. Fancier card readers, etc... but the same basic questions, etc.. Nothing tricky. Their just looking for bad guys.
@@Yaronkk2000 Thanks. Yes I'm lucky to retire next year. I'll always work on something, but ill hang up my mailbag. Not today. Just pulled into work in my day off. OT is good. Later
We just rented a car from Budget in CA and they said we could cross into Mexico with it. Also, our US insurance policy with USAA covers travel to Mexico within 75 miles of the border. We are not going that far so should be okay. Thanks for the videos! I feel more comfortable with our first time border crossing. One question - should we wait to get the FMM card there at the border? I suppose they process that application while we wait?
@Eager Expat Hi Joe! Thanks for your videos - both: informative and entertaining at the same time. Always a pleasure to watch! A couple of questions though: 1. When you're staying right behind the first car in the line (just one car away from the officer's booth), do you show the passport to one of those cameras (or the officer himself) through the car's windshield? 2. Didn't notice any Mexico's border patrol officers throughout your crossing. Aren't they supposed to control the traffic from their side as well? 3. Did you happen to notice what's up with the pedestrian path? Is it open for now - June, 2021? Thanks! Regards
Thanks for watching. Yes the camera is suppose to read the RDIF info. As of Dec 2020 an agent told me the system isn't working in San Ysidro. So yes they take the passport or card and swipe into the computer. No Mexican agents when you cross back into the US. A few cops stand around, Just as you cross in. Technically the US line is about 5 cars before you reach the customs agent. You might notice the large silver speed bumps. As of a few weeks ago pedestrian lane in the east side is open. West side is closed but rumored to open soon. Ok heading into work. Take it easy. Joe
Sorry for the messy email. Running into work. Crossing back into the US had improved in the past few weeks. More lanes are open as things get back to normal. Just stay out if the Sentri lane in the far right. They will get really mad. Threaten a heavy fine, etc. General and Ready lane with a passport and you'll be fine. Its routine
I am considering doing some dental tourism in TJ, so thanks for the vid. I want to make sure I do not get in a sentle lane as I saw some youtube video of people getting $5000 fines and cuffed and detained for hours.
Ya, getting in the Sentri lane by accident will be a real problem. They usually detain people to make sure it never happens again. Some people were playing games when it first opened. I never heard of a $5000 fine. I'm sure that's for repeat offenders. Just park in one of the many lots on the US side and walk across. Most of the lots used to be under $10 for 8 hours. You'll have to ask about 24 hour rates. If you have an older car, park in the free trolley lot in Chula Vista. Take the train to the crossing. I've did videos on walking across. Take the $6 cab to the dentist. Maybe take a $3 Uber back. Uber is hit or miss for pick ups when you cross in. They don't like to tangle with the TJ cab drivers. Avoid the 1.5 or 2 hour wait in traffic. They used to have a medical lane, but I think that went away too. Many of us (including myself) found a way to get those medical forms a little too easy. A few of the larger dental clinics (I'm not sure which) even offer transportation to the border. They probably just pay for your cab. Other very nice offices are located in the medical complex near the Pueblo Amigo Hotel. A very easy walk from the border crossing. Maybe stay at night at the hotel if you need multiple trips. I love driving into Baja, but it can be a pain to cross. If you insist on driving, you'll be fine. But, please watch my video on getting Mexican car insurance. You'll find a link for Baja Bound on my videos. A great San Diego company. I also did a video on getting insurance for Mexico. You must have a Mexican policy. Your insurance might cover your car, but it won't cover the car or person you hit. Forget about being detained at the border. Get in an accident in Baja and you're not leaving jail until you pay cash for any damage. That could be tens of thousands. With the insurance, 99% of the time you leave and Baja Bound does the rest. There are other good companies, but this is who I always used. I would rather talk to a person in San Diego than a phone machine in Mexico City. Especially at the scene of a bad accident. Today I live in Bangkok. Best of luck with the teeth. Check out my playlist for more videos. I did one on Pueblo Amigo. No dental videos though
@@EagerExpat Thanks for the info on the risks of driving and having an accident. That is something important I overlooked. Where do you apply for Sentri? We need to get one because we are traveling to Tijuana once a month to do dental work. The previous time we went, my gps had me go straight to a Sentri and boy did I get in trouble. They had us get out of the car and wait in a waiting area that looks like a jail cell while they inspected our car. CBD told me that if we do it again it's a $5,000 penalty. On our previous times, the gps had me go straight to the San Ysidro entry, so I was just lucky. I had no idea about Sentri. So this weekend we went again and I was terrified to make sure I avoided Sentri, but I got lost going in circles trying to find the San Ysidro entry. It took me a half hour because the gps kept on trying to get me to go to the nearest path which was Sentri.
Sorry to hear the trouble you had. I need to do my homework myself. I'll be applying for Global Entry at the SD airport. This is more for airport customs, but I'll be able to use the Sentri line as well. Just applying for Sentri, I haven't researched. With the long border waits I usually walk across if I'm just going to TJ. If I go further south, then I drive. Best of luck, Joe
Driving into Mexico they rarely stop you unless you have dirt bikes or toys. Walking in they haven't stamped since they require a 180 day $31 tourist FMM visa. Entering the US they swipe to check for outstanding warrants ( I'd guess) but no stamp. Hope that answers your question. I'm a new channel. Hope you'll consider subscribing. Thanks. Joe
Not sure in this video. They normally do. This car is a hatchback. I think he walked around with a flashlight. Just looked in the windows. I just moved to Thailand. Videos to come. Hope you follow along. Thanks for watching
It will be my first time crossing coming from rosarito to the US, should I look up the San ysidro border on maps to get me on the lane to cross over? Kinda confused
It's not too bad. Follow Google maps to the large mall Plaza Rio. From there, follow the main road about 3 blocks to the general lanes. Anyone will point the way from Plaza Rio. Go after 9pm for less traffic. You can catch them ready lane near the hospital if you have your passport. Its a little more tricky to find. Just stay out of the Sentri lane. Unless you have Sentri. You enter those lanes near Pueblo Amigo hotel.
You should have a passport when leaving and entering the country. That said, many people travel between San Diego and Tijuana with just a drivers license. You might get a "lecture" when returning, but any US citizen will be allowed to return to the US.
Can I ask you....I am coming to see my girlfriend in Ensenada Christmas Eve night, are there any more restrictions at the border for me to enter? and does Uber or Lyft service me from the San Diego airport into Tijuana by chance?
Its Mexico so things change often. Ensenada was closed to residents only in May or June. Today it's open. You can uber or lyft to the border. Pedwest sude is closed. Pedeast by the trolley is open. Here's the latest problem. The FMM form tourist visa used to be free for 72 hours. Nobody checks until 500 miles south. Today they are insisting you pay $35 for a 6 month FMM. So Uber to the trolley or Uber to Pedeast side. It will be rare to get an uber going into Tijuana. unless they live there. The return wait can be 2 hours. The bus station in Tijuana is near the border. If your girl isnt picking you up.
Yes, passport card is fine. I crossed two nights ago. I saw the Ready line was about a 30 minute wait. I headed to the General line and crossed in 10 minutes. So keep an eye on the Border Wait app. The "essential travel" and half the gates closed is relaxing. I think there are 26 gates (?) They had about 20 gates open last Wed night. That's good to see. It hasn't been unusual to see 10 gates open in the past year. Have a good trip. Joe
@@dexterpace7710 4.5 is tough. If you can, head to the border around 10pm. Most people are already in the US, or going back later. It's hit or miss, but I have good luck between 10 and 11pm. Usually 30 min or less. At worse about an hour. Best of luck. Joe

ID and a picture of a passport would help. You might get a lecture that a passport is needed. Walking back would be easier than driving for that lecture. Hello, your videos have been helpful. I want to take my motorcycle to Ensenada. Nervous about it. My biggest concern is coming back to the border. Do motorcycles wait in line? Do drivers and border patrol get upset for lane splitting? It will be hot sitting on a running motorcycle. I have American passport and had both my covid pfizer vaccines. thank you in advanced
Hi. I've never rode a bike across, but I see lane splitting all the time. 95% of people are reasonable and understand sitting on a bike for an hour would be tough. Then there are the jerks. I've seen more than a few people pull to the right, etc.. trying to block a bike. They just spent 1.5 hours in line, etc.. I worked with a guy in San Diego and lived in TJ. He rode a motorcycle just so he could pull right to the front of the line. I don't think he cared if he got the occasional honk from a jerk. It seems what most people do is split lanes at a slow speed. Many people jerk from lane to lane trying to gain 5 feet, etc.. so watch those cars. Most people I see get toward the front of the line. Maybe 5 cars (or so) from the front of the line. Pick out a family car and zip in front. I would avoid the single hothead in a raised 4x4 etc.. I don't think the customs agent cares, but I wouldn't race to the front of the line. Tuck in behind the 5 th car from the front, etc.. Another consideration is to cross back between 11pm to 5am. I usually cross in less than 30 minutes. You would only have to lane split (maybe 20 cars). Compared to 100's on a Sunday afternoon. You might also consider Otay Mesa or Tecate. A little more mellow than San Ysidro. You can check online at border wait times to get an idea of crossing times. Be aware that Tecate has been closing at 2pm (I think) during the health crisis. I wouldn't be a huge fan of riding in Baja at night. If you could return from Ensenada to Tijuana before dark, maybe hang out in Tijuana and wait for traffic to die down. Have a great trip. Joe
I tried to thank you for your last comment. It wouldn't let me so ill thank you here. I asked my buddy about lane splitting. He said ride up to the number 4 or 5 spot from the border. Then wait. Don't wedge in. Someone always waves him in. I agree, most normal people have a heart. Waiting on a bike isn't reasonable. Not for 2 hours anyway. If your feeling uncomfortable offer an old car a coffee ($5 bill) that guy will be happy to let you in.
@@EagerExpat I got back from Ensenada last week via my motorcycle. Wanted to stop by and say thank you. I went back on a Tuesday 8:30 am through the Tecate border. No kidding no waiting. @@arielban1 That's great. I was in Ensenada two weeks ago. Tecate is a great option. Just remember during the health crisis it closes at 2pm. Hopefully it's back to 11pm (I think) soon. When I came back at San Ysidro I only had a 20 minute wait at 9pm. 22 gates open, A big change from 10 gates. And when I was about ten cars from the customs officer, I waived a bike splitting lanes to get in front of me. No regular person expects someone to sit on a bike for an hour, etc.. Next time ride out to La Bufadora. I did a video. Nice ride above the Pacific. Or head across Highway 3 (I think) across the mountains toward San Felipe. It's like highway 76 to Julian. The road was a little rough a month ago, potholes from the semis. Still a nice ride. The 100 miles from San Felipe to Mexicali/Calexico is a little boring. You can also head toward Tecate on the newer toll road in Mexicali. Take it easy. Joe

Im planning on driving it to tj but dont have insurance with my name on it. Do they ask for proof of insurance or only ask for Driver license to cross?
They don't ask for either when you enter. If you get a traffic ticket you'll show your license. Insurance is only asked for if you caused an accident. Enjoy your trip. Joe
12:05 That's a little ridiculous to me that you need to retrieve the green card. Shouldn't CBP have a record of LPRs? Not that you shouldn't carry it with you but seems like silly bureaucracy.
I agree. They knew she had the green card by running here California license. Still, I guess it's a rule. What was upsetting is how many people are allowed to slide back into the US with a warning to get a passport next time. Oh well, it was only 60 miles roundtrip to get it. Live and learn

Ready lane can be tough. This morning it was 3 hours to cross at 630am. I have a few buddies that live in Baja and work with me in San Diego. One has Sentri and gives about 45 min to cross. If he is late, no big deal. Our other buddy crosses everyday at 4am to be at work at 7am. If he gets there at 5am, he takes a siesta. That's rare. Today he rolled in past 800. He uses the Ready lane. Your at the will of the customs agents. 23 gates and today 8 were open. "Essential travel" is in excuse to keep half the gates closed. Factor in the apartment savings with a serious commute. A little easier if you walk across. Maybe 45 min to 1 hour to cross in the am. It can be longer. TJ its great, but these days the commute is real

@@Brandon-wr1ie Ya no problem. Technically things are "closed" etc.. But then reality. Take it easy. Haven't been posting here too much. Started another nerd site. Landing planes at San Diego airport. Check it out if you have a moment. On The Runway. Later
Most the time they open the trunk and walk around the car. They also have drug dogs walking around. If they see something suspicious they send you to secondary. They then search everything. This is rare. Normal border cross rarely checks inside bags.
Nice video man When you enter Tijuana or when you come back to usa border the police did ask for covid 19 test or not Because I want to go Mexico but friend of mine told me when you come back the police will hold you for 14 days
Check out my video with the zebra in Tijuana, It explains what's going down lately. Basically Mexico says essential travel only. They used to give you a 3 (or 7 day?) free visa (FMM) to enter Mexico. Today (If you walk, they charge $36 for a 180 day visa. If you drive, it will be rare if they pull you over. 99% they just wave you in. If you have a heavy load, camper, etc.. you'll get pulled over entering Mexico. I'd guess they will charge you for the FMM. Small car, etc.. you just drive in. As far as coming home. You need your US Passport (and green card if you have one). There is no police 14 day hold.
@@yosefgad2976 Hey Yosef, update. Looks like you'll have to show a clean test when you fly from Mexico to the US. So far this is only flying. I've crossed several times in the past two weeks with no issue. In fact I'm in San Felipe filming today. Take it easy. Consider subscribing. I'd sure appreciate that.
I don't remember. Are you talking about the guy selling wipers? He changes them on the spot. About the same price as the US. Looked like the ones from Costco
Do they ask you for your passport? I have to cross august 12th for an event in TJ and I don’t think my new passport will come in time, if I don’t have my passport can I still cross with my ID and birth certificate?
Driving across you won't be stopped 99% of the time heading into Mexico. Heading back, bring your info and get in General lines on the left. You might get a lecture, but they'll always let a US citizen back into the US. Hopefully you'll get the passport, then head to the Ready lanes. Maybe 20% faster crossing. Best bet is cross back in around 10pm to 5am. Hopefully a 15 min cross. Sun afternoon can take 2 plus hours. Have a good trip. If you haven't, hope you consider subscribing. Thanks, Joe
@adriana Nunez for Baja fest? I have the same Problem! By Passport might not come in time.. from what u have been hearing as long as you have your DL your birth certificate you’ll be fine
I'm not an expert. You'll have to email US Immigration. "I think" your ok with a Canadian passport to enter the US from Mexico. Like the video showed, if you have a "green card" to live in the US, they want to see that over the Canadian passport. My girlfriend brought her Canadian passport only. She had just received a green card 2 weeks earlier. They swiped her passport and asked for the green card.
You might get a lecture. Do you mean a US state license? A federal license from England, etc.. I'd guess wouldn't work. The passport is what they want, but a US license will also work
Global Entry is a program more for airports. It cost (I think $150 for 5 years) It's in hundreds of airports in the US and around the world. Instead of a long line when the plane lands, you usually pass customs in minutes. Like Sentri you have to pass a background check etc.. If you have Global Entry, you're allowed to use the Sentri lane. Thanks for commenting on my new channel. I'd sure appreciate if you subscribed. Soon I'll be running around doing video in SE Asia.
Question. I’m American. I just turned 21, I don’t have my passport yet and my friends want to drive into Mexico. Will I be okay? If I bring id and birth certificate?
This is a popular question. The correct answer is you need a passport anytime you leave or enter the US. Or passport card in Mexico or Canada. The reality is, many people travel with just a drivers license. They might get scolded, or the agent may not bother saying anything, but a passport (or passport card) is the correct document. If you're a US citizen they won't deny you entry into the US. They might detain you in secondary (this is rare) Will you get away with traveling to Mexico without a passport? Yes you will. It may cost you a "fee" ($20 I hear) to enter Mexico. Hit or miss on the hassle coming home. If you apologize for not having a passport, you'll probably cruise in. Photo copy of birth certificate will also help. Lots of guys on UA-cam will tell you what you can "get away" with. And I agree, many people have traveled between TJ and San Diego without a passport for years. That could change tomorrow. Alright, take it easy
Did they check your passport when entering into Mexico? Also did they just glance at your passport coming in and out or actually scan it both ways? Thanks =)
They don't check entering Mexico driving. Walking they check and often enforce the tourist visa. Free for 72 hours, I think. Returning into the US they scan both driving and walking. If its expired you might get a lecture. They're looking for outstanding warrants. I think from all states, but im not an expert
@@EagerExpat okay the thing is I'm getting a work permit visa from Nigeria to mexico So my question is I'm I allowed to cross the border with my Nigerian documents
@@Krs_Jay I would guess the US wont allow you to visit unless you have a visa to visit the US. They don't care what Mexico gave you. Contact US immigration. Im just a guy on UA-cam
Every car is checked. License entered into the computer. Passport scanned. If all looks normal, you move on. If they want a second look, you go to secondary inspection. They usually take a fast look in the trunk, etc.. plus, dogs roam the line. At secondary they remove the seats, x ray the entire car, etc..
Great video! Do you know if the driver has global entry that's enough to get in the other lanes or do all passengers plus the driver also need global entry? Thanks in advance!
Thanks for watching. Everyone need Global Entry or Sentri to use the Sentri lane. What we do is drop a passenger off. They walk across then meet near the trolley when we cross. The Sentri lane is 10 feet from the walking lane. Thanks for watching. Just moved to Bangkok. Hope you follow along
Thanks for these videos. I’m planning on retiring to Ensenada in a few years (I currently live north of Seattle). It was interesting that you discussed those “little Passport cards” and I couldn’t figure out what you were talking about. I have had a full passport since 1992 (ex husband was USAF and passports are recommended for family members) but I’ve never had a “little Passport card”. Then I realized that when I go into Canada (20 miles north of my hometown), I just use my Enhanced Drivers License….I don’t need a passport. Well, it turns out that only 5 states have Enhanced Drivers License’s with Washington State being one (the other 4 are around the Great Lakes and NY). With that card, I can go to Canada, Mexico and the Caribbean without a Passport. I’m glad you pointed that out. Also, I have a NEXUS pass going into Canada (similar to your Sentri pass) and the next time I have to renew it, I’ll spend a little extra and get the Global Entry card. I’m a new subscriber and am loving your video’s and narratives. 🌟🌟🌟🌟🌟
Thanks Mary. Yes Global Entry is the best. This works in many countries around the world to enter too. Plus at any customs line in the US. Airport or land border like San Ysidro, entering the US. Global Entry (usually) covers any local program like Nexus, Sentri, etc.. Put it this way, 9 out of 10 times, you'll cross with the air crews. The passport card started a few years back. If I remember correct, its just for Mexico and Canada. Its $10 or $20 extra when you apply or renew your US passport. No extra benefit, other than you can leave your passport "book" at home. Its a credit card. If you have Sentri or Global Entry (Probably Nexus too) the credit card (passport card) will have the info on the magnetic strip. Hopefully in the future all countries will use a card instead of an old book with visas stapled in, etc. I've heard of Nexus, but unfamiliar. It looks like it speeds things along at Canadian ports. Crossing into Mexico they're not special lanes. 99% of the time it takes 10 minutes to enter. Just avoid 4 to 7pm if you don't like crowds. Even then you'll cross into Mexico around 30 or 45 minutes. Crossing into the US is the problem. That can take hours in the general or ready lanes. Ready lane is anyone with a passport only. General lane can be a little longer. Most have a passport, others have an excuse why they don't. Either way you wait in line behind the guy who lost his passport on his trip. A quick look showed Nexus only works for ready lane (not Sentri lane) crossing into US from Mexico. My two cents, apply for Global Entry when your Nexus expires or 6 months before heading to Ensenada. It might take a month to get an appointment, it may take 6 months. You'll probably go to SeaTac airport for interview. Portland may be faster. Forget about Nexus or Sentri or even the California enhanced drivers license. Passport is fine for ID when the airlines start asking for the enhanced ID. Double check, but I'm 99% sure Global Entry includes Nexus benefits entering Canada. Not sure. I know it includes Sentri lanes at US ports with Mexico. Its really designed for airport customs. Cruising past a 1 hour customs wait in Hong Kong or London and hitting the "speed lane" with Global Entry is nice. San Ysidro is the busiest border in the world. Just avoid driving into the US between 630am to 9am. Even the 2 or 3 Sentri (Global Entry lanes) at the very far right, can take 1 hour. At most other times its usually less than 30 min. The other day we crossed in 10 minutes. Looked like a 45 min wait at Ready lane (Where you can use Nexus) Basically Sentri is for Mexican's with green cards (most who work in San Diego) or frequent US travelers returning from Mexico. Its been around a long time. Global entry started in 2008. You need a squeaky clean record, but its (in my opinion) the way to go. Others may disagree, probably because they've had Sentri for 30 years. They both expire every 5 years. (I think) Cost is similar. Global Entry might even be a little less. Plus if you get a fancy $250 airport lounge access credit card, they usually give a credit to cover global entry fees. So whatever you decide, skip the Nexus cost with Mexico. You can get Global Entry at most international US airports. If you want Sentri (I'd guess) the interview will be at customs at a border office like San Ysidro. Get Global Entry. When you return to the US in LAX, you'll be on the train to San Ysidro before the other guy is out of customs. Ok hope that helps
@@EagerExpat As I plan to retire to Ensenada from the (very) north Seattle are, I won’t be doing much commuting. I did check the differences of prices with Global Entry vs Sentri vs Nexus, etc. Currently, Global Entry is $100 USD (for 5 years); Nexus is $50 where it’s only good between the US and Canada; Sentri is $122.25 and is good for entry to the US from Both the Canada and Mexico. Most of them may include TSA PreCheck which is $85 by itself. I’m lucky that while there is a Global Entry office is in Seattle, there is also one that is about 15 miles from my house as I’m only 20 miles south of the Canadian border. I haven’t gotten TSA PreCheck is because I rarely fly out of Seattle, Bellingham Wa has a small airport that flies to Seattle but we also have SWA, Alaska (Horizon) and Allegiant all fly out of. I’m going to keep watching your video’s and educate myself as much as possible, get better with my Spanish, and make several trips down to the Ensenada area and decide where I want to live in the area. I’m not moving down until my mom passes and she is 80 (and in good health) so I’m looking at about 5 years before I make the big move. Only 5 states have the EDL which allow entry into both Canada, Mexico, and the Caribbean and California isn’t one of them…..so it’s like a mini-Passport. BUT, there is also the REAL ID and that has been extended (again) to May 2, 2023. I’m Proactive so I’ve already got mine on my drivers license (it didn’t hurt that I’ve had an active Passport since 1992). I’ve got a squeaky clean background as I was able to work for the DOD….not worried. Keep up with the great videos!
Thanks for the video! Hit you with the like button. I had a question, my passport needs to be renewed. I was planing to cross the border to TJ but all I have is my ID and birth certificate. Would I still be able to cross? Thank you
San Ysidro is pretty flexible. Many people cross with just a drivers license. It depends on the agent on duty in Mexico. $20 seem to be the "Fee" for no passport. I'd guess you have a 90% chance they won't notice it's expired entering Mexico. If they do notice, be prepared to pay the bribe ( I mean fee). Coming home hand the agent the expired passport and explain your renewing soon. Bring a copy of your birth certificate too. If they are normal, they'll just waive you through. If not, you'll get a small talk and then be let back into the US.
No, thanks! I recall when as a toddler, I would go with my dad to TJ when we lived in San Diego, it was a long wait, but not like this! This is just insane!
They never checked me at a land crossing. Its my understanding non-residents will have to show proof. Flying into the US, everyone needed proof or a negative test. Not sure if that changed
@@cashoutlaw4866 Returning to the US isn't the problem. They might give you a lecture, but they'll let you back into the US. The problem is entering Mexico. I just met a group of people in TJ last Wed night. They all walked in with passports. All but one guy. He just had a CA drivers license. Luckily San Ysidro wasn't asking for the 180 day FMM ($31US) (July 15, 2021) They did pull the one guy without a passport into the "small office" He was told $20 US would make the passport issue "go away" So hopefully they let you slide in. Just a heads up. I've heard of the $20 being asked a few days ago. Also a few months ago a guy told me he got the $20 fine. If you drive, you'll cruise in. 99% chance you won't be stopped. Roll down the windows and take off the sunglasses. Then you'll only deal with the US agents when you return. Best of luck and have a great trip.
@@EagerExpat yea man planning on crossing through car I’m barely getting passport and it’s gonna take like 3-4 months which is a bummer do you know if you have to pay the fee if you drive through too I don’t mind paying as longs as it’s $20-$35 just wondering? So my birth certificate and real if should be fine to get in rite? Thanks for the reply man and nice video
@@cashoutlaw4866 You shouldn't be stopped as you drive-in. Roll down the windows and be cool. 99% chance you'll just drive in without stopping or showing anything. Even when I was stopped entering Mexico, he didn't check my passport. Check out my video "Is Driving In Mexico Dangerous Because Of Checkpoints." They're looking for drugs and guns, etc.. And just a heads up. I drove back in 2 nights ago. They had at least 6 dogs running around the cars waiting to enter the US. Some genius threw something (probably weed) out of his car. They had him in handcuffs and had an agent driving his car towards the crossing. I know it's only weed, but they don't play at the border. So you won't be asked for a "fine" entering Mexico without a passport. This is un-official advice. You did the right thing ordering the passport to avoid future hassle. But the fact is TJ and San Diego share a connection and a ton of traffic. Luckily Mexico just lets 99% of the cars just roll in. I'm not sure if the real ID is enough to enter the US. I don't have one, so I never checked. Even if it's not, as a US citizen you'll be allowed back into the US. I would avoid the Ready Lane and head to the General Lane. It wouldn't hurt to print out your passport application (if you can). I'm sure most agents understand the passport process is backed up. If you're cool, I'll bet a fast search in the trunk and you'll be on your way. A copy of the birth certificate along with a US ID should avoid too long a lecture about not having a passport. Thanks for checking out the video. If you haven't, I hope you subscribe. It helps my little channel grow. Have a great trip. Check out Baja Bound in San Diego.
Yes if you're driving back into the US you might get told you need a US passport, but they'll let you back in. The problem these days is walking into Mexico without a passport. They might give you a hassle if you don't have a passport walking into Mexico. Make sure you're in the "General lanes" not ready or Sentri. Binge watching your videos.. I'm recently retired Navy but a San Diego native and I was REALLY interested in seeing this airport bridge crossing to the TJ airport.

Great videos man, i needed this information for my next trip to Tijuana, it will be my first time crossing the border driving

Good for Mexico and Canada only
In my experience the Ready Lanes can make a BIG difference but often when I've tried to use them the entrance has been blocked off.
I always check the app border wait times. Last night I walked across. The ready lane was backed up until the round about by Plaza Rio. The 3 general lanes had 10 cars in each lane. Did you cross at Otay? That's always been easier with toys. They're used to RV's, etc..

Joe

just stumbled across your videos and wondered a quick question. heading into Mexico on the weekend and coming back monday is it better to exit through the San Ysidro border or the Tecate border?

The US Passport Card is also good as another form of ID that fits in your wallet like any other similar shape card and especially if your state ID/driving licence is of the older non-`REAL ID´ variety.
Passport card is the best option. Much better than carrying a?passport book. Thanks for watching
So do they certain hrs that they open to get back to San Diego?
The main San Ysidro is open 24 hours. It's the busiest crossing in the world

If your passport book is recent it should have the RFID and should be able to use ready lane.
My passport is 8 years old. But that's a good point
@@EagerExpat Does your passport have the RFID symbol on the front cover?
Do you know if residents only show their green card ? Or do they do something else ?
My ex was Canadian. She handed her Canadian passport and they said we only need your Green card. I'm not sure but I believe the green card is more important for residents. I'd just bring passport and green card. If you only have a green card, that makes you a legal resident. Should be fine
How long is the drive from tj area red light district to the San deigo airport with traffic
The drive is 20 miles. In traffic that will be an hour. Crossing the border is the problem. In traffic that can take 3 hours. Watch my video on walking across the border. Save the driving for those that have to drive into Mexico. Keep in mind this is one of the busiest border crossings in the world
Headsup San ysidro boarder crossing.
Visit TJ over the weekend.
If you have real ID card the immigration Boarder agent usually let it slide.

We are not going that far so should be okay. Thanks for the videos! I feel more comfortable with our first time border crossing. One question - should we wait to get the FMM card there at the border? I suppose they process that application while we wait?

@Eager Expat Hi Joe!
Thanks for your videos - both: informative and entertaining at the same time. Always a pleasure to watch!
A couple of questions though:
Its routine
The other reason for all the cameras is to run your license plates. Cars on the stolen list, and plates that don't match the car, etc..
Nice video! So they don’t stamp your passport. Do they scan the barcode? Or simply look over it?
Driving into Mexico they rarely stop you unless you have dirt bikes or toys. Walking in they haven't stamped since they require a 180 day $31 tourist FMM visa. Entering the US they swipe to check for outstanding warrants ( I'd guess) but no stamp. Hope that answers your question. I'm a new channel. Hope you'll consider subscribing. Thanks. Joe

@@EagerExpat nice. your so helpful to me. Thank you so very much

Can one use the passport card in the ready lane?
Yes, passport card is fine. I crossed two nights ago. I saw the Ready line was about a 30 minute wait. I headed to the General line and crossed in 10 minutes. So keep an eye on the Border Wait app. The "essential travel" and half the gates closed is relaxing. I think there are 26 gates (?) They had about 20 gates open last Wed night. That's good to see. It hasn't been unusual to see 10 gates open in the past year. Have a good trip. Joe
It’s good to know about the ready lane. Last Monday I spent 4.5 hours in line trying to cross back
@@dexterpace7710 4.5 is tough. If you can, head to the border around 10pm. Most people are already in the US, or going back later. It's hit or miss, but I have good luck between 10 and 11pm. Usually 30 min or less. At worse about an hour. Best of luck. Joe

@@leonidus6273 Thanks for watching. The problem isn't walking in or driving in. Driving they rarely stop you. Walking in without a passport etc... Might cost you some cash, for them to look the other way. Driving in would be the easiest to avoid showing a passport. The problem is when you return. They want a passport. They'll accept. ID and a picture of a passport would help. You might get a lecture that a passport is needed. Walking back would be easier than driving for that lecture. You run the risk driving that you'll be sent to secondary inspection. As far as crossings, there all about the same around San Diego. If you drive, don't get in the ready lane. General lane only.

Edgar I am looking to move to Tijuana and work in San Diego. Sentri is no option for me. I have ready lane card. What do you advise?

Global Entry is a program more for airports. It cost (I think $150 for 5 years) It's in hundreds of airports in the US and around the world. Did you have to show your passport?
1:02 May I know why you say "gracias" if they literally are stolen your money?
It's a toll road. I had the choice to take a free road. Just being polite to the person working the toll both.
It's either pay at a road that is mostly taken or go through a free one and risk getting your whole money, car, and life taken.
Did they check your passport when entering into Mexico? Also did they just glance at your passport coming in and out or actually scan it both ways?
Thanks =)
They don't check entering Mexico driving. Walking they check and often enforce the tourist visa. Free for 72 hours, I think. Returning into the US they scan both driving and walking. If its expired you might get a lecture. They're looking for outstanding warrants. I think from all states, but im not an expert
@@EagerExpat can I cross into USA with a Nigerian passport from Mexico
@@Krs_Jay Not sure. Depends on your visa in the US. Contact US Immigration
@@EagerExpat okay the thing is I'm getting a work permit visa from Nigeria to mexico
So my question is I'm I allowed to cross the border with my Nigerian documents
@@Krs_Jay I would guess the US wont allow you to visit unless you have a visa to visit the US. They don't care what Mexico gave you. Contact US immigration. Im just a guy on UA-cam
Nobody checked the car at the border.
@@79jrnygrl Sounds good.
Oh, thanks for the like. Take it easy. Joe
No, thanks! I recall when as a toddler, I would go with my dad to TJ when we lived in San Diego, it was a long wait, but not like this! This is just insane!
Yes, Sentri is the way to go. San Ysidro is the busiest border crossing in the world
Are they checking for vaccines?
They never checked me at a land crossing. Its my understanding non-residents will have to show proof. Flying into the US, everyone needed proof or a negative test. Not sure if that changed
Im in the video
Nice. I caught your car? If you were an agent, sorry about filming you. I can block you out, if you'd like. Thanks for watching
I'm still mad the postal worker didn't order my passport card when I got my passport last time despite me checking the box
Yes the card is very handy
Do they just ask for your passport when coming out?
Yes when you return a passport and a few questions is normal. Where you going etc... They're looking for nervous reactions from smugglers. No big deal
@@EagerExpat I’m planning on going with a buddy to Tijuana but don’t have passport yet can I just show birth certificate and real Id coming back?
@@cashoutlaw4866 Returning to the US isn't the problem. They might give you a lecture, but they'll let you back into the US. The problem is entering Mexico. I just met a group of people in TJ last Wed night.
They all walked in with passports. All but one guy. He just had a CA drivers license. Luckily San Ysidro wasn't asking for the 180 day FMM ($31US) (July 15, 2021) They did pull the one guy without a passport into the "small office" He was told $20 US would make the passport issue "go away"
So hopefully they let you slide in.
If it's your first time driving in TJ, consider some Mexican car insurance. Maybe $20 a day (or less). Small chance you'll need it, but if you get in an accident, it may save your butt. Check out Baja Bound in San Diego.
Only got a Ca ID n official birth certificate you think they’ll let me back ?
Yes if you're driving back into the US you might get told you need a US passport, but they'll let you back in. The problem these days is walking into Mexico without a passport. They might give you a hassle if you don't have a passport walking into Mexico.
Make sure you're in the "General lanes" not ready or Sentri. Just show your documents, you might get a lecture but it should work.
Thanks for checking out my new channel. I'd appreciate if you subscribed. Take it easy. Joe
So birth certificate & California ID I should be fine and you said to pull into the general lanes ?
@@rickygutierrez1820 That's it. The general lines are to the far left as you enter the border line.
Im over age with just my CA ID..... Think I'll have a problem? Do they scan the IDs if you're going in by car?
Thanks for the videos Edgar. Your name should be "Expert" instead of "Expat." You seem to be an expert about Mexico. Did you show your passport to the officer?
Hardly an expert, but I've been visiting from San Diego since the 80s. Yes I always hand over my passport and they scan the barcode. I guess it checks for warrants, etc.. A few routine questions. No big deal
