this is very interesting, i have used a clasic bow a lot, and i do grip it hard, somtiemes i actualy realise that that grip was a problem and turn my wrist to compensate, i'll use the relaxed grip for now on, thanks for the advise :D
I used to torque the bow upon release all the time using my flatbow. I now use a grip more like modern recurve & now no longer torque the bow! Have your index finger around the handle with thumb pointed at the target, my other three fingers are tucked into my palm (relaxed) the joints of two of the fingers rest against the handle.
It is actually a good point that this is entirely for target style shooting not combat at all. In combat style shooting though i would assume that like modern military shooting techniques your taught to line up you sight picture and loose before muscle tremor has much of a chance to set in.
@Dipper Pines Nono actually Olympic Archers do that just for showing off...do u think in Medievil time people drop their Bow ? And i never saw a strap in any Medievil Movie.
Ok, so it's not about dropping or spinning, it's using the forward hand as a loose pull point instead of gripping hard and adding torsion and tension which can warp the trajectory of the launched arrow.
I like how among the massive sea of shitheads who arrived at this video randomly bc of the algorithm or whatever, about 1 out of every 10 comments is by someone who actually likes archery
I hunted with compound bows up until a few years ago. No one I knew used slings, but we did use trigger draw releases. When I did, the technique I was taught was to just secure the bow with my index finger so that I wouldnt drop it and it wouldn't fly out once the arrow released. You'd want to open your hand like you showed once it was drawn or while drawing so the bow went to its "natural position". Then you wanted to get a finger around it without adjusting its position in the hand. Then the others dont really touch the bow but are cupped and floating off it and just catch the bow by closing once the arrow is clear, which you kinda just feel. This is our solution to the problem without using a sling. I know there are lots of different bows and archery techniques out there, though, so this is cool to learn.
@@jeffthepatato2277 I know guys who hunt with longbows and recurves they have made themselves. They do the same. I also shot recurve with the boyscouts, and it is the same. The general idea of it is that you hold onto the weapon. This is because not all archers today nor throughout history used a sling with recurve bows and it is a general technique used with all bows because you don't want to torque the bow.
I am no involved in archery at all outside of the occasional "just for fun" opportunity that might arise. But I have to say. This was such an informative video. Answered "why the swing" but also gives good insight into basic mechanics of shooting that taught me a lot as a "beginner". Nice work NUSensei!
Yankee Hunter Except he NEVER answers the damn questions, he just dances around the answer the whole damn video! All he had to say, "Turning the front into a pivot point eliminates some of the inconsistencies inherit in aiming with a solid grip on the front. It makes aiming with the draw hand slightly more precise."
Except you can learn how to watch the video and use some brain, and stop replying the same comment which you have already been answered by others. I had those conclusion right after he stated the question. You're like a kid trying to show off basic equations when everyone else in the class already knew, and everyone else probably thinking this guy is dumb, just holding their breath trying not to laugh out loud.
No More BS Please He says 2 minutes in that in order to not have an uneven amount of pressure on the bow they don't grip it but rather just touch it. Also I have no idea why this is in my recommendations but I'm here watching it so I guess the algorithm works.
When I learned archery, I was taught the “swordsman grip” It earned this name because swordsman developed the grip style for fluid movements between cuts. The jist of the grip is you keep your fingers relaxed, cradling the bow, and lock your arm so that the tension from the draw keeps the bow in your hand. A simple way to describe how my hand held the bow, thumb relaxed, forefinger and middle finger are relaxed and nowhere near gripping the bow, point at the target with them, and ring and pinky finger are the only ones that can touch the bow, they are there to gently keep the bow in hand once loosed. After you fire the bow will tilt forward a bit and if you relax your arm and have your hand relaxed it will basically rock forward into a secure grip. Not quite dropping it like Olympic archers but very similar method of operation. The precision comes from a relaxed grip and a deep breath. Don’t strangle your bow. Cradle it in your palm.
From an old black and white Hollywood movie about Cyrano De Bergerac, after disarming a student, he says, "Hold the sword as you would a bird. Too tight and you kill it. Too loose and it flies away."
@@Scientificmethods okay maybe lock is the wrong word, but it conveys the right point, the force should be through your bones not your muscles. You engage the muscles in your drawing arm, with your other arm bracing the bow, keeping it steady and you let the bow do the work, you just guide it and let fire.
Interesting to hear an explanation about this practice, I do traditional archery with an English Longbow #50@28, shooting off the hand and it's almost impossible to do this and while you don't "death grip" the bow, you do have to hold it. I've always thought it looked silly, thanks for explaining it's purpose.
Hart it does look silly lol I prefer to stick with what the English did for example,be the most effective killers you can be(im targets only of course, never animals!) They would grip their bows, and even have the arrow on the other side. Also it was law in England to practice every Sunday haha archers, especially those with long bows will start growing a bigger shoulder and such so be aware of that
yeah, after 5 years of shooting I've noticed an asymmetry between my shoulders, the other thing about english archers, at least where warbows/artillery bows are concerned, you'd be wearing a thick full sleeve gambeson so you could afford to draw straight a little more rather than crooking your arm as much as we do for target shooting.
Its kind of like resting the barrel of a gun on a firing rest, microscopic flexing in the barrel will cause shots to go high, thats why we freefloat barrels now so the only contact point is where the barrel meets the receiver.
Wow, interesting. The fun part is, that I had a bow as a kid. Not a serious thing but also not exactly a toy. And after some time I figured that i got better accuracy by NOT holding the bow firmly and at the end I did as the video described ... not really holding the bow. Back then I thought I was doing it wrong because it looked kinda silly. So it took me almost50 years until today to figure why I got better results with my "silly" holding-method.
What is the black shoulder contraption? Is it holding your torso together where you where previously chopped in half? Were you previously chopped in half?
I'ma need ya to go back and time and shoot the version of that posted this, thus either creating a paradox in which you now don't exist do to your premature death, or create two timelines when you go back in time which make two worlds and therefore two of you, in which case you would survive in your own timeline. Either way it's a win win.
Only when they know what they are talking about like this guy does. I've seen a lot of videos here on UA-cam about stuff like this and the UA-camr clearly had no idea what he or she was talking about. This guy is one of those rare ones who isn't a idiot. Plus he said it clearly. Stuff like this you can easily confuse a person if you don't talk about it like he did.
I use a shoelace, too. Didn't even bother to cut it. I've noticed at the olympics that they might have a rainbow colored sling, but it is a shoelace all the same.

It's all about preference. I've shot bows forever and a day and I tried his method and went back to traditional. He is absolutely right about the death grip though. The best way to hold on to something is with an open ✋ or in this case just enough grip to keep shit going.
Hey recommendation gang! I am also not typically interested in archery videos but I'll be damned if this guy didn't hold my attention the whole time. Hearing a solid explanation by someone who is very passionate about what they do is always so interesting.
I like the "360 spin with the 'brush your hair back'" bow drop. LOL. I don't shoot, but this video has been very informative to me. Was always curious about it. Thanks.
The UA-cam algorithm was very generous to you. I didn't search for you and I havent looked up anything related to archery. Either way, interesting video. 👍
Oh man, the sound of that bow's groan is amazing and something I couldn't hear in your old videos. It feels so alive now. I didn't realise modern carbon bows groaned in a similar fashion to us traditional/historical bow folks. Did your bow always make that noise, or is it a finger tab or microphone directionality thing? My traditional wood laminate bows groan ever so slightly when drawn, a friend's horn composite bow groans quite loudly, but neither are anywhere near as loud as what I heard in this video.
Actually that's quite insightful. That's exactly what it is, a form of show and has no practical purpose. You can always just grab the bow after the shot.
So archers dont grip the bow for the same reason snipers fire between heartbeats? Pretty cool that your body is physically incapable of being as accurate as these little hacks
Actually snipers do neither. They don't shoot between heartbeats, nor do they old their breath. if someone tells you this they are either misinformed, or are lying.
I wouldn't call it a hack. In practically any skill, relaxation is the way to train effectively. You should only use the muscles that are actually needed
Matt T. Real Archers grip the bow... target archer don’t grip the bow. And this shit is not applicable in real world applications. they shoot light bows. Go try and sling an arrow from a 70 pound bow and not grip it firmly.... this is far from true archery used for hunting or combat.
The algorithm brought me here, but I ain’t even mad about it 🤷🏼♀️ This is really interesting because my hubby does like, historically-accurate medieval archery with English longbows (I mean, he even crafts his own arrows using period materials), so I’ve never really seen this kind of archery. Totally different styles but they’re both incredible to watch. Kind of a sport and an art all in one! I’d love to do some archery one day.
Ha last nights team focus was set up and grip. This is the type of video I always hope new shooters will encounter. I recommend your vids to folks who come to shoot who are not in a formal program. I know they can find vital basic principles , well explained

April sixth, I get randomly enlightened by a video about archery, a discipline I was never interested in but am now fascinated by. As I look at the commentaries, I realize I'm not the only one who got this video recomended to me without knowing why. We are dozens, maybe hundreds. Why does this video attracts so many ? Is this some kind of cornerstone video everyone will have to see at some point ? Did I somehow got a secret achievement that unlocked this recomandation to me ?
i dont know why this was recommended to me. i dont even watch archery in the olympics, or at all. but I sat through this entire video. this is the definition of a good teacher
My trainer once told me, to not grip the bow until I let my string go, and even then only sort of "catch" it with my fingers, to avoid applying pressure on the bow during the shot. That seems reasonable, right Nu?
Lucas Lorenz That is actually one bad habit many beginning archers have, and should be avoided like a plague. If you just try to catch the bow, you'll gonna start to anticipate the catching motion and your arm muscles will be in all kinds of uncontrollable tensions during the shot.
To add a bit to your answer the key problem with this habit is not just the unwanted tension. Because as you said you anticipate the shot, you might catch the bow milliseconds before actually shooting the arrow. This is causing even more inconsistencies as in some shots you catch the bow after the shot, in others before the shot and in some even between the release and the arrow clearing the bow. And even worse, because subconsciously you believe that the arrow is well clear of the bow, you might actually torque it even more than what you would do with a standard beginner death-grip. So as you said avoid this habit like the plague!
Did anyone of you ever tried to cath the bow after shooting? I understand what you want to say, but you simply hold your fingers in front of the bow and after the shot the bow hits the fingers and then you can catch it.
LockenJohny101 I have been shooting like that in the beginning. I tried not to torque the bow by keeping my fingers loose and then catching the bow after the shot. I got pretty good at it, but many times I could feel that I started the catching motion before the shot. My experience is that it can be done, but some times it will be messed up, so it is better not to do it at all. Also because it doesn’t give any additional benefits to shoot like that, there’s no reason to take the risk of bad shots caused by poorly timed bow hand actions.
Hi there! I know it's an old video, but I've just discovered your channel and I'm watching the videos now. 'Choking' the bow was the first thing my instructor corrected me. Thank you from Spain.

Idk shit about archery but this channel quality is very apparent 10/10 my guy
this is very interesting, i have used a clasic bow a lot, and i do grip it hard, somtiemes i actualy realise that that grip was a problem and turn my wrist to compensate, i'll use the relaxed grip for now on, thanks for the advise :D
I used to torque the bow upon release all the time using my flatbow. I now use a grip more like modern recurve & now no longer torque the bow! Have your index finger around the handle with thumb pointed at the target, my other three fingers are tucked into my palm (relaxed) the joints of two of the fingers rest against the handle.
i hate this idea but i use archery in a combat scenario where i need to ditch the bow for a weapon and holding a bow ready is needed
You have internet in the tribal parts of central America?
hahaha that's great, no i should have specified that it is for medieval reenactment fighting, not actual life or death combat

It’s not actually the front hand to relax forward, the back hand to the back
林翰霆 they said pull point as in it becomes the point from which you pull back
I like how among the massive sea of shitheads who arrived at this video randomly bc of the algorithm or whatever, about 1 out of every 10 comments is by someone who actually likes archery
He is talking about recurve bows
Excellent explanation. Thanks
When I learned archery, I was taught the “swordsman grip”
It earned this name because swordsman developed the grip style for fluid movements between cuts.
@@robohippy exactly!~
You should never lock your bow arm in archery, it is meant to be bent.
@@Scientificmethods okay maybe lock is the wrong word, but it conveys the right point, the force should be through your bones not your muscles. You engage the muscles in your drawing arm, with your other arm bracing the bow, keeping it steady and you let the bow do the work, you just guide it and let fire.
Never had an interest in archery...

Facts 😂
I've never fired a bow in my life, but you gave such a good explanation. I understood everything you said and it makes complete sense.
Hart There is no way I couldn't grip mine. I recently made a #90@32 and it would try to rip my thumb off
Hart, #50@28? This is why you eat your fucking vegetables, short arse.
bashpr0mpt well. Being short is advantageous in melee.
Its kind of like resting the barrel of a gun on a firing rest, microscopic flexing in the barrel will cause shots to go high, thats why we freefloat barrels now so the only contact point is where the barrel meets the receiver.
"360, brush your hair back." lmaoo
Wow, interesting. The fun part is, that I had a bow as a kid. Not a serious thing but also not exactly a toy. And after some time I figured that i got better accuracy by NOT holding the bow firmly and at the end I did as the video described ... not really holding the bow. Back then I thought I was doing it wrong because it looked kinda silly. So it took me almost50 years until today to figure why I got better results with my "silly" holding-method.
Lol, his channel and your story makes me want to start archery

Oh man, the sound of that bow's groan is amazing and something I couldn't hear in your old videos. It feels so alive now.
I didn't realise modern carbon bows groaned in a similar fashion to us traditional/historical bow folks. Did your bow always make that noise, or is it a finger tab or microphone directionality thing? My traditional wood laminate bows groan ever so slightly when drawn, a friend's horn composite bow groans quite loudly, but neither are anywhere near as loud as what I heard in this video.
It was actually WAY louder on the microphone (might actually be the string or tab). I dropped the audio in editing; it was ridiculously loud.

This is badass. I have never watched an archery video in my life but this came up as suggested. Very cool stuff here!
So archers dont grip the bow for the same reason snipers fire between heartbeats? Pretty cool that your body is physically incapable of being as accurate as these little hacks
Matt T. Some sniper hold their breath before shooting too
Actually snipers do neither. They don't shoot between heartbeats, nor do they old their breath. if someone tells you this they are either misinformed, or are lying.
I wouldn't call it a hack. In practically any skill, relaxation is the way to train effectively. You should only use the muscles that are actually needed
exhale on the shot not hold your breath. or your blood pressure makes you bob or sway
Matt T. Real Archers grip the bow... target archer don’t grip the bow. And this shit is not applicable in real world applications. they shoot light bows. Go try and sling an arrow from a 70 pound bow and not grip it firmly.... this is far from true archery used for hunting or combat.
The algorithm brought me here, but I ain’t even mad about it 🤷🏼♀️
This is really interesting because my hubby does like, historically-accurate medieval archery with English longbows (I mean, he even crafts his own arrows using period materials), so I’ve never really seen this kind of archery. UA-cam: Wanna know why anchors drop their bow?
i dont know why this was recommended to me. i dont even watch archery in the olympics, or at all. but I sat through this entire video. this is the definition of a good teacher
no!, the point of the sling is to draw magical power from outer dimension!
Riddick tonn lol he is a trick shooter....
This is in my recommendations for like a year now.
I've watched it youtube are you happy?
