From 5* Recruit to Undrafted (What Happened to Shea Patterson?)

  • Shea Patterson is considered one of the best quarterback recruits of all time, but after a short stint at Ole Miss and two years at Michigan, he finds himself as an undrafted player with little to no chance of ever starting in the NFL. His time at Michigan was plagued by mediocrity and struggle, so my question is what happened to Shea Patterson’s once promising football career? Enjoy

Shea Patterson didn't leave Ole Miss because he was "screwed" by the program. He left because he wasn't ever going to be the starter again after Jordan Ta'amu (pronounced Tay-ah-moo) came in and played better. Once Shea figured out he wasn't going to start anymore, he left. Simple as that. Didn't have anything to do with the NCAA investigation, although that did provide him with a good excuse to leave. Remember the NCAA originally didn't grant any waivers for the Ole Miss players who wanted to transfer, so Patterson was taking a huge risk transferring because it could have easily cost him a year of eligibility, but because he would have been relegated to the backup, it made sense.

@@randyjordan5521 I wouldn't say Ole Miss was a mediocre program when Shea got there. In 2015, the season before Shea arrived, the Rebels finished ranked 9th in the nation, beat Alabama for the second year in a row, and won the Sugar Bowl. They did fall into mediocrity the following years, but they had certainly been very competitive in the toughest division of the toughest conference in all of college football.

Patterson was like a lot of great high school athletes, for whatever reason they just don't have what it takes to make it at the next level.
And the reason he left Ole Miss is that he was beaten out by Jordan Ta'amu. Patterson was looking at being relegated to a backup role after all of the high school hype.

Solid video, but the Michigan narrative is pretty rough. Rudock and Speight played well when healthy at Michigan, O'Korn was absolutely abysmal, and in Shea's first year, the team was top-3 in the country rolling into OSU and favored in that game (they had lost despite Harbaugh's best game plan in 2017 due to O'Korn's poor play and 2016, of course, was the "J.T. was/was not short" game). The team was back to a high level again his senior year, but really, Shea's success started and ended with non-OSU home games, and in most of those, the run game carried him at times. I think Harbaugh messed him up, personally. The Michigan offense was horribly conservative while Shea was around. One example that still pops up in my head from that period is that Shea was absolutely stellar at executing RPO QB run design plays, so what did Harbaugh's offense do? Always run the RB in those situations. But yeah, just wanted to comment on the Michigan narrative here as somebody who just graduated from UofM in June.

He wasn't the problem at Michigan, Michigan was the problem and Harbaugh. Patterson isn't a Pro Style Type QB, hes a Spread or Air Raid Guy. He would have had better success in the Pac 12, or Sec if he stayed there.

Don't know about Shea, but his family was trash. They used Shea to get the brother on at different schools. First at Arizona, then at LSU, and finally at Ole Miss. Shea was overrated from jump, and I said it while he was in high school. As a LSU fan who liked the future potential of our commit at the time Franks, over the hype of Patterson as an immediate starter, I hated what we did to try to get Patterson and I guess Franks hated it enough to decommit.
Of course It might have been better for us to have not gotten Franks. He would have likely been the starter before Burrow came along and that would have kept Burrow away. However seeing the way Franks has improved over the last two years, who is to say that Joe Brady wouldn't have helped him become great as well?

I'm an OSU die-hard. Most of the UM fans don't want to admit it, but Harbaugh is hella overrated. That's why Patterson didn't live up to the hype.

As a Michigan fan i heard all the hype got excited but was super disappointed. I've seen him throw for 70 yds in a game. I was happy for dillian mccaffery when he transferred. Michigan is where qbs go to die. Harbaugh is definitely not a qb whisper.

In fact, some would say he only had moments of being good and the rest of the time he mired in mediocrity. He’s not the first to be hyped but turned out to be a bust and he won’t be the last.

He had the potential to be great, but it is all on him. This is from a SI article "Gattis seemed to indicate that Patterson didn't put in the necessary work over the summer, citing the quarterback's time spent on the golf course versus in the film room and throwing with receivers. That's not the best endorsement from a new offensive coordinator looking to get off to a fast start with a veteran QB and talented wide receiver room." I think because he already had a MLB contract Patterson did not take playing football as serous as someone who is trying to get into the NFL.

Being good enough to play well and not good enough or able to carry a team to victory against the better teams. He was a 9 and 3 quarterback.
