After the hectic work week I've had, you've no idea how much I needed this. Thank you for the end-of-year/beginning-of-year brush burn. It was nice to have those few moments of relaxation. Hope the Squatch family has a great 2024!
When i was a kid, the brush burn from the managed forest and lands was a big family get-together from all over, even the US and Canada relations would fly over and spend a week with the main family. Over the years it's tapered down to me and my brother and a couple others. Last four years it's been just the two of us and our ladies and his tikes. It's a good time to reflect, talk, plan the next year. Just family stuff, i think it's been a "law" from day one that nothing but family matters would get discussed around the fire. Like great grandma used to say "to burn away the worries of the clan and let them fly away with the ashes". Good times! Always enjoy a good roaring fire, always puts a smile on my face.
Yep, lots of combustible oils in it that burn really well, but very dirty. Near the beginning when I panned up to the black smoke that was coming off of the small starter fire, that was from the birch bark.
Never knew birch bark would light up like that (we don't have hardly any birch trees around here), our brush pile fires always involved all our old portable concrete (sheets of heavy cardboard) a little diesel fuel, and some dragons breath shotgun shells if we were feeling mischievous. The start was a bit more dramatic, but the effect is the same, crackling warmth and a chance to just relax and listen. And I was just thinking, only a little more than 3 months to LeSeuer! That's the sign of spring for me!
Yeah. I tend to go with diesel as well. In younger days, I used gasoline. But then, one time, I dawdled a bit too long on striking the match and the vapors spread a bit. The first and only time I saw an entire brush pile jump about 2 feet up from the bottom of the pit. I suffered a bit of butt pucker at that moment. Live and learn.
A garden rake, sand shovel, pitchfork, yellow chore gloves, a cool crisp morning and the smell and sounds of burning brush brought back good memories from the 40-50s. Thanks
Thanks for the slowdown, I've been on duty 9 days for a road commission In northern MI and we have moved a lot of snow in the last four days. I didn't have to be there to feel the heat on my face watching that fire burn. A brush pile burn or a campfire can be very serene.
Coincidently my wife and her Native American helper have started burning brush piles today. Although the Oak Fire exploded through here in July 2022 it is a good time to do prescribed burning. There is no longer 100 years of un-burned fuel here. We have had 2" of snow here which is gone and several inches of rain lately. They will be lucky to get a fire started, we don't have any birch bark.
Nice to stay warm by the fire. We hit some fairly chilly temperatures up here in Alberta, Canada. We dropped to -38 last night and going to -42 for the next two nights. A nice big roaring fire would be welcome right now. Always like watching the yearly brush fire. Almost as much I like watching the shop work. Thank you , keep up the good work. Nice to see the eyes are getting back so somewhat normal.
A perfect day to chillax and enjoy a much needed brush burning ,quiet reflections of some somber moments the hijinks of the last year and the promise of new things in the year to come. I used to love when we touched off our brush piles in my youth takes me back to sweeter simpler more relaxing times.
Another awesome video piece full time. I use the ash from my wood burning stove in vegetable garden and the garden just takes Wright off .Denis from Santa Rosa CA
Way better Yule fire than those on Netflix. And, if you need more snow, south of you, I had 15+ inches on Tuesday and today, Fri Jan 12, I'll have at least 6 inches, but probably end up with closer to 12. Just drop a note here. Great way to spend the day, working the brush pile fire. Thanks for sharing.
Nice touch with the intro graphics! Not goint to lie i zoned out there for a few with the crackle of the fire. Something about that sound can just turn the brain off and let you relax.
Yep, that's exactly what I was talking about when I said "Today, we're just gonna be..." Just something about tending a fire that calms the mind and eases the soul - so long as everything stays under control, that is lol!
Thanks for a nice relaxing fire. It's 60 today in Memphis and we're expecting a HIGH of 21 Monday w/ a low of 8!!! I'll be building my own fire...in the fireplace!
We’re due for some much colder weather here too, I think by Saturday it’s supposed to set in here and stay for a while - sure am glad I was able to get this outside work done while it was still mild! 👍
Watching the fire reminds me of the time my father decided to cremate a calf that was born dead in the middle of a deep freeze in the late 70s. The ground was frozen hard and deep and there was no snow on the ground. Once the fire got going good, my coat had to go into the pickup. It was going great until the fire jumped the fire break. I went in close and got it contained but I also singed my hair in the front. I had what looked like a sunburn from my chest up and had singed the hair off my arms as well as my mustache, eye lashes and eye brows. I was wearing a shirt that was mostly nylon and the collar was melted. I had to keep lotion on my face, arms and chest for a few days and my skin had big flakes coming off for about a week but I healed up with no scars. I still ask myself how I could have been stupid enough to get that close to a raging brush fire but I know that if I hadn't stopped it from spreading it would have burned a lot of woods.
There is something rather soporific about a fire and sitting around one. It must come from the ancient days when humans discovered fire . What amazes me is the amount of heat in the ashes of that fire, you should have wrapped up some potatoes and meat in tin foil and had a winter BBQ.
I swear I can feel the heat from here. :) Watching this just reminded me that I have a brush pile that needs to be 'reduced' like this too. I'll get at this in the next day or so, as the winter weather forecasts shows no precipitation over the next few days. Light snow on the ground, much ;like Squatch is showing here, so safe time for a brush fire.
2023 everyone around me was loosing power for weeks at a time. oddly the entire time i was only without grid power for 5 hours while a friend went 27 days without
In Iowa we never burned brush; just pushed it into a pile in an area ripe for wildlife living. We often harvested the rabbits that made their homes there.
On second thoughts, this didn't need words of explanation, just the simple strike of the match, the crackling of the fire, the crunch of footsteps in the snow........ Would have been perfect as ASMR, even a live stream. Maybe next year?
I was just thinking: my wife likes to watch a fireplace on the tv to relax since we don't have a fireplace. I enjoy watching a nice big brush fire to relax...
Brings back some nice memories, sure wish I could smell the wonderful wood smell etc. A couple of hotdogs roasting for lunch would have been nice too. (smile) Many Thanks!!
The fire yes indeed! Up here in northern Alberta Canada we got a cold snap in the -35c to -45c for about 4 or 5 days and many of us are enjoying our log stoves ect to kill the chill. Happy new year & looking forward to many more great videos!
Love burning brush. The final part of the physical work of a cleanup project. Mission accomplished. We usually push the pile up with a skid steer. A lot less work. Thanks for the video and the completion of a project started months ago.
Do the same at work. Have a dedicated area in a clearing about 25ft deep w/ 6ft berm on 3 sides. Keep packing in cuttings w/ the CASE loader...pile can avg 10ft+ high & typically burn when it's about 20ft worth. In multiple spots on the side & the front face spread a coffee can worth of diesel w/ a little gas. Then get a good stick to wrap a rag around that's been dipped followed by lighting up the pile face. Have had flames reach almost 60ft once it really gets going. Stand back a hundred feet & even there feel like you're getting baked. Just the radiant heat once caught a palm log on fire that was off to the side. Fire hose kept on hand the entire time & until the fire died down at least 1 of us there the entire time to keep an eye.
On account for forest fire danger and the fact that we haven't had a real winter in ... almost a decade now, this last few years we've had to make pits and burn the excess material underground. Kind of a hassle. I envy you. :))
The birch bark starter. Those who know, know. Wish winter was there earlier for the traditional year end close out. Perhaps you can make that video montage while tending to the fire on your property like last year. Cheers Toby.
What no caterpillar action to push the remaining stuff around 😅 hope you have a wonderful new year there squatch and may the good lord watch over your family and keep you all safe.

We have to do the same in Arizona due to Mesquite and Palo Verde trees; just grow too fast. As you mentioned below, living in the “unincorporated” area, allows us to burn without a permit only on selected burn days. The funny part is we live 300 yards from a Home Depot parking lot. This just shows how fast the growth has been in the last 15 years. 15 years ago, it was mostly vacant desert. If you feel comfortable, can you address whether your property was originally homestead in earlier times? Relaxing Video Toby.
Yes, like I've mentioned before here in MN as soon as we get 3" of snow cover we can legally burn without needing a permit. This property here wasn't homesteaded until Senior bought it from my grandfather, and at that time it was completely wooded and un-developed. He and my mother both worked to clear everything that you see now, plus put up all of the buildings that we have as well. I believe in was 1972 when Senior bought this property.
@@squatch253 Thank you for sharing the family history of the Squatch farm. I’m a little surprised that the Squatches don’t have chickens to lay eggs, but maybe the neighbors supply plenty like my neighbors do here in AZ. Frees me up from cleaning, harvesting & feeding daily.

911 what is your emergency . Yeah i saw Bigfoot burning the woods please help
There is something about the peace of a good fire.
I never realized birch bark burned like kerosene. A good garden amendment there.
Yep, lots of combustible oils in it that burn really well, but very dirty. Near the beginning when I panned up to the black smoke that was coming off of the small starter fire, that was from the birch bark.
Kudos for lighting the fire like a man. So many people on UA-cam would use five gallons of diesel and a propane torch.
How about 5 more minutes would have been perfect😮 thank you Squatch for the Refresher 8:01
Hey Toby,,,intro was pretty nice touch. Listening to a fire can make anyone reflect on the past.

Birch bark is an excellent fore starter with the natural oils in it. It is sooty though and will clog spark screens.
@kenhawkins1033 😂 Been there done that.
@@kenhawkins1033 I usually use a toilet paper roll soaked in alcohol. Keeps good fire for a while, good enough to start the rest of the wood.
You've got the beginnings of a nice batch of lye soap.
Brush pile burns are work, enjoyable and relaxing work, but still work and I look forward to every year.
A garden rake, sand shovel, pitchfork, yellow chore gloves, a cool crisp morning and the smell and sounds of burning brush brought back good memories from the 40-50s. Thanks
Yes it was very peaceful Thank you for that wish you Good news in 24

Peaceful times around the beautiful fire and snow.
Thank you
I see smoke and steam from the snow. 😊🌨 🌨
After pushing snow for the last 12hrs. what a welcome video to watch. Thanks
Ah the fire and sparks. Just the kind of relaxing video I feel I deserved.
That was a perfect opportunity to fry some bacon and eggs on a pan for breakfast on the red cole
One of my favorite things to do to just relax is tending a nice outside fire.

I can feel the heat from the fire 🔥 down here in Illinois
Relaxing video, something about a burn such as this one.
Ahhhh, nice and relaxing., just like watching the ol' campfire. I can almost feel the heat!

That's better than me lighting the barbecue by a considerable margin.
Nice episode, Squatch
Glad you finally got a little snow. We need much more as there is hardly any ground insulation and many septics will freeze
I also save birch bark for starting my fires.
That is how we made Tobacco plant beds back in the day. Rake off the ashes rake the ground and sow the tobacco seeds.
