My 2nd console after the Atari 2600. It was such a step up! You listed some of my favorites! Frenzy, Time Pilot, and Pepper 2 were also excellent! So many good memories from this little console! 🙂
DK Jr was the first arcade game I bought, and that port looks incredibly faithful to the source. I like that they made the cartridge orange, too, much like the color of the original DK Jr arcade cabinet.
Man, I love that game, amazing release, and the quality, another level. I remember having the cartridge for my Atari XE in the 80s, I was so happy that day I even bring it with me to the school to admire it. Thanks for sharing John, as always you never let down.
Japan went jungle screen, then the screen with the spring and the moving platforms (and vines) then Mario's hideout. Then the screen with the chains & locks. As you progress on the U.S. version it will eventually get in this order. After you complete the 3rd loop (level). Basically, every time you free donkey kong on the chains & locks screen, you progress a level.
While the ColecoVision isn't my favorite system of all time(that would be the Super Famicom), it is my favorite nostalgic console by far. It was the first system I ever got for Christmas, and I cherished it for years until I sold everything to buy an NES years later. It's truly amazing to see what some of the homebrew titles look like today, as we could have only dreamed of games looking that good at the time. Opcode Games is by far one of the best teams out there, as some of their releases take awhile, but they are always worth the wait, and then some.
Essentially the super game module only adds more ram and sound channels does not enhance visuals so essentially this is what the colecovision is capable of with almost stock hardware which is amazing
Great video John! Colecovision was my favorite console from my youth - got mine in first or second grade. The arcade ports were outstanding on it. Those ports would build your confidence only to have it shattered when you went back to the original arcade machines :). What kind of mods do you have on your console to get that crispy video output?
While I have a RGB modded console, I was showing footage on my CollectorVision Phoenix, a FPGA console that was made in very small quanities(you probably know about this). Anyways love your channel too, thanks!
@@johnhancockretro Awesome John! I might have to get a Phoenix to join the club :). I still have my original Coleco but I'm not sure if it's still operating. That thing had the largest power supply of any console I've owned.
It would be nice if they'd actually ship you what you ordered. Customer service is not something these guys care about. No answers to emails or inquiries.
Loved the ColecoVision! I got mine for my 14th birthday (it had been out for a while, but when I got in on the action, it was much cheaper and on the way out). My favorite games were Donkey Kong (of course!), Montezuma's Revenge, Gorf, and Popeye. Wish I still had it, I had a whole box of games.
I miss my Colecovision. Montezuma's Revenge. Dk, DK Jr, Zaxxon, Turbo and so many other titles. That Opcode version looks fantastic! I wish that we could get a remake system like they have done with some many of the other systems.
The Adam version with the bakery level was never released. It’s out there to play, but the level was never finished so things like collision aren’t present. I wanted an Adam so bad so I could own that game, but I would not have dared ask my parents for such an expensive computer. Good thing since it barely got any support. Edit: You say the original Coleco release had all four screens? It’s been a long time, but my memory is that it didn’t have Mario’s hideout and that was one of the reasons I wanted the Adam version. At least the NES version was more complete.
@@Dinosaurprince He's saying there are glitches on the extra, 5th level, which is true. The other levels are all good, IIRC, and you can play the 5th level, it's just a little wonky. I can't recall how much, and in what ways, the first 3 levels are improved over the CV version, though.
It really makes you wonder why they didn't try harder back in the day to emulate the arcade versions of games when clearly it's possible - assuming there's no special chips used in the homebrew carts.
Opcode did an amazing job with DK Jr. Arcade! And wait, did I hear that Opcode might be doing Frogger soon?! Awesome! I'm mostly excited for Pac-Man DX to be released as I pre-ordered the game a year ago! Still, this remake is awesome compared to the Coleco version and the Adam!
I wonder if OpCode works on other video game systems as well? I would love to see them make the original Donkey Kong Trilogy on the NES/FDS as well, and then made a special NES/FDS port of Donkey Kong '94 that would have the arcade levels, and then go into the other levels of Donkey Kong '94, and, depending on how well things were done, for there to be a Game Boy version of the game as well. The NES/FDS port could be called Donkey Kong: Mario's First Adventure, and the Game Boy port could be called Donkey Kong '94 Remix.
I always liked the idea of the SGM, long overdue memory etc. expansion of the frankly basic Colecovision hardware, but boy has it been a rocky ride to many actually using one. I followed the project for a little while but got tired of the wait and difficulty in buying one. These ports look great but much like the last time I checked am I just going to end up watching a few select people demonstrating the SGM rather than being able to buy one myself?😅
The Donkey Kong JR arcade game is too hard. I prefer the Colecovision and NES versions. I dislike DKJ for the Atari 8 bit computers. It has all four screens but it's too hard. I prefer the original Donkey Kong. It's better than DKJ and it's easier as well.
Colecovision was my first console. This game was my favorite along with Venture and Ladybug.
Excellent choice. And gorf, zaxxon, burger time are great too!
@@montana01971 Don't forget Pepper II.

Taking it way back with John Hancock I’ve seen and have all from 1980-Now what a life of gaming throughout the decades
Very good looking Arcade port. Very well done and it's so great to see modern support for classic systems.
You must have joined the club before me, can’t wait to get my copy. Nice review!
Thank you
I didn’t realize DK Jr. had different level order between the U.S. and Japanese versions.
Japan went jungle screen, then the screen with the spring and the moving platforms (and vines) then Mario's hideout. Then the screen with the chains & locks. As you progress on the U.S. version it will eventually get in this order. After you complete the 3rd loop (level). Donkey Kong does too.
When you hear the “Can Can” music at the arcade, you know someone’s gotten to Mario’s Hideout. 🤣
Love the OpCode Detail and Color

Yes they do!

Wow that looks great.

You are correct, I was getting this and the 7800 version of Donkey Kong Jr. messed up. Thank you for the information.
The ColecoVision version only had three screens, same like Donkey Kong.
Odd I have seen and played the Adam version many times. False info here.

Atari 7800 has a good port of DK Jr. Need to dig out my Coleco!
I like them both great content I love your videos
Glad you enjoyed it!
Their intellivision games ship next 😎
i loved my coleco as a kid
If I have the Adam peripheral for the console is that technically a super game module?

A year ago....ridiculous.
I know. I wanted to buy that game so bad seeing how close it looks to the arcade original.
If you have a Phoenix you are good to play them also.
I do and used that to capture footage for this video which I forgot to mention.

Looks cool. Nes is my favorite version. Plays a bit faster.
Wish there would be an arcade quality remake of DK Jr for the Atari 2600 maybe with some water moving effects in it
You're kidding, right?
Yes.its like the game and watch version 😃
I thought there were only 3 screens in the Colecovision DK Jr. my friend had this and was surprised that my Atari 400 had Mario's Hideout
Yes, Coleco version had 3 screens got it confused with the 7800 version which had 4
DK Jr game play is just marginally better than the awful DK3. Great compare video.
So this is basically a port of the Adam Super Game Pack? I have the Team Pixel port of that.
Nope
I am awful at this game. The jumping mechanics are wonky to me and I can’t even make it past the first level.

8 bit Donkey Kong is near perfect with gameplay
