Simply AMAZING! It is hard to believe these 2 games are running off of the same hardware. I often wondered what would be possible on old hardware and modern game programmers but even more than that, this is the perfect example of why true passion for developing a game always beats out pinching pennies and looking at profits. The irony is, if it is a quality game, people will buy it. Thanks for the video.
The Intellivision was the console I had as kid, and had Donkey Kong Jr as well. The old version brought back lots of memories, and I recall the controls were just a clunky back then, just learned to work around them. Amazing what people can do now with these old consoles and updating the games. Thanks for showcasing the old and new for this game on the console.
Wow, John it truly amazes regarding the work of creating improvements of original games on these old consoles. This version is such an amazing improvement over the original. The intellivision was a newer console than the Atari, but was still hampered with very low end hardware...very cool indeed.
Nice review / comparison :) I played the hell out of this game on Colecovision when I was a kid. How I wish I lived near a place with retro expos as big as in Portland... It must be a great atmosphere there, and a thrill to show part of your collection. Oh and I like the old intro só much more than the new one... It's much more retro and just not as produced. Keep it up :)
The Intellivision had better graphics then the Atari but they rushed it out before it was perfected... nice work by all involved in improving the graphics on this new version of Donkey Kong Jr.
In hindsight the Intellivision could have been great. However, back in the day the kids that had one at home were embarrassed to say so or they's be laughed at by us Atari kids.
@@Gigastorm24 : Yep. And then came the NES, and then the C64 and then... That's why I hated consoles and computers for a long time. Thanks John for the awesome video. It looks almost as good as the colecovision version. Definitely light years ahead of the original version. I’m sure the main difference between now and then is Ram is much cheaper comparatively. Definitely a labor of love.
It's finely available for purchase on ROM format and I bought it and it has problems of being to hard because of how it's hard to safely jump the Snap Jaws and how if you are on the vine to get they key to try and save Donkey Kong on the first board you can die if a Snap Jaw is below you, this does not happen in he Arcade version or even the Coleco Version also unlike the Arcade version you have to push up to make Junior grab they key, in the Arcade it does this automatically once you grab the vine. It's easier to play the Japanese board order because you don't have to repeat the first screen until you pass the level with the spring board on it and Mario's Hide Out and the Keys Board. It's a definite improvement over the Coleco version but the above mentioned problem makes it not worth the $70 plus price of the cartridge version.
This version blows the original intv version away, it has better graphics, sound, better & more animations, heck it even had some pcm sound effects in it such is DK’s screaming etc,,,, This is what the official intv version should had to be.
Can you just imagine how much more popular Intellivision would have been back in the day, had the game developers put this much work into games like this. This system had way more capabilities, and this is the proof.
While this is undoubtedly a fun game I've never had any particular affinity towards the title. For some reason though after watching this video I started feeling compelled to port this game to an obscure console. I've chosen the Amiga CD32. For my tastes it's a nice balance of capable and retro (plus I've done a lot of developing for the Amiga computers). Being cd based with zero copy protection makes it fairly affordable too. If anyone would be interested in contributing feel free to let me know, I'd appreciate the help. Im doing code, graphics and sound, so would mostly like help with manuals, cover art, etc. @ John Hancock Would this be something you'd be interested in a copy of when complete? I know you like stuff that's a bit offbeat, and personally I'd love to get some projects into the hands of people who might appreciate "new" software for more obscure systems I follow.
Of course they did. They wanted to sell their system but when the Colecovision didn't take off as expected, they ported popular titles they had licensed to other consoles for revenue and as a bonus, it made their console shine by comparison.
I must say, I’ve only ever played the. NES version of this on my NES Classic, never even played the arcade version, but I love this game. This remake looks amazing, definitely have to get a copy if I ever get an intellivision
Is that mean we can happy saying old console get better port of arcade game back in the day ? Man now I hope Street of Rage 4 have Genesis port and with upcoming Analogue Mega SG I think it's time to play those games again in HD TV.
Well done conversion! When I was a kid in the late 70s, me and my family had an Atari 2600, while my cousin had the Intellivision. I was jealous of him because of the improved graphics and sound...and then I tried one of the games using that controller..... Let's just say the Intellivision controller is definitely its weak spot (The ColecoVision, probably the best of those early consoles, also had a wrist-breaking controller, but even it was better than the Intellivision's in my opinion). Nice to see all these NEW games being created for those old systems by modern homebrew hackers. And new hardware too!
Always loved this in the arcade - and this is a pretty remarkable release for Intellivision. How did they do it compared to the Nintendo release? Is it expanded memory or just a lazy Nintendo port?
Rod Munch Certainly not a lazy NES port. This one has more options, intermissions, a (seemingly) lack of fall damage, different physics, and different graphics and sound.
Nintendo Era I’m talking about the original release, I’m not saying it was a lazy NES port, I’m saying a lazy arcade port - this came out long before the NES, at least in the US. The new version is so much better I’m wondering why the Nintendo version is such garbage - was it just them being lazy or are there hardware differences, like rom size, that just wasn’t practical then.
The games that Coleco made for other systems were half hearted in order to make the ColecoVision look as superior as possible. You can see know how good the games could of been on the non-ColecoVision systems.
That is really cool, kind of reminds me of the homebrew remake of Donkey Kong on the Atari 2600, which looks way better than the original. There is a conspiracy theory that Coleco on-purposely ported all the Donkey Kong games sloppy on Intellivision and 2600 in order to make the Colecovision version reign supreme. That explains why the Atari 5200 never got any ports because Coleco was unable to degrade the 5200 console. -Joe Gaming Palooza Empire
Original version Donkey Kong looks like a weird 4 legged creature. But not an ape. Lol Coleco went out of there way to make sure that only the Coleco Vision version looked good to boost sales back in the day.
This is great, but how much of that improvement includes taking advantage of modern techniques that may not have been available to even the most experienced Intellivision programmer in 1983? I mean, I don’t have an issue with that, but also keep in mind that homebrews like this have the luxury of having often months or even years to work on, while the Coleco guys (like everyone in that era) were probably on super tight deadlines and probably were happy just to get the game released on time. Still, this looks fantastic.
Agree 100%. Not only did the original programmers have 3-months MAX to work on each game... and learnt new techniques along the way of the brand new technology (like you mentioned)... but also: These new games have “unlimited” memory on the chip in the cartridge. In 1982, the cost of making 500,000 copies of a cart with an 8k chip would have been millions more than on a 4k chip !!! Another reason why they limited the graphic capacity back then :) (MUCH higher profits)
It was a matter of programming that game well, if it had been like that that year Coleco's direct rival would be intellivision and we wouldn't have to send him anything
So disappointed Carl Mueller, Jr. was turned down. His Arcade ROM to home console work made Intv. DK very fun and accurate game play, in addition to the unused samples and music from the Arcade.
I'm hoping that they'll be able to do a remake version of the Donkey Kong games that were released on the Atari 2600, especially since I wasn't fond of seeing DK look more like a deranged gingerbread man instead of an ape. ;)
I heard Coleco purposely made the Intellivision and Atari ports crappy just to make their Colecovision Versions look the best. So the potential for the other games being better was there. They just wouldn't do it

Thats quite impressive. Also showcases how completely unacceptable some software releases are. Quick cash grabbing licenses with little effort put into the product. U.S. Gold for example. No, copyright was usually shortened to "copr" on most Intellivision games.
