The fact that you're new to the game and you've been playing without locking on is actually pretty hardcore hahah. Playing unlocked is more common for more skilled players, for some of the really large beasts they're easier to fight unlocked.

You can use the R1 L1 R1 attack pattern. Especially when he's buffing up and looking at the moon
