- Interesting bit of recovery kit, much lighter than a traditional snatch block.
Test of the RED Winch Snatch Ring, 5Tonne rated.
Using a multimeter with a thermistor to measure heat build up at the Gator-Jaw soft shackle...
Air temp ~17deg (Celsius)
Before winching 17deg
After winching max 24deg

Interesting idea.
What size ring do use? I was thinking about the 8T
Shad we have the 5t ring. I plan to order a larger Gator Jaw then shown here 👆
rlhydn overland that was my next question, what size gator jaw.
Looks good, i need to start and think about some weight savings.
Shad Donaghue Yeah so we’ve researched since this test 👆 that larger diameter rope will spread the load more evenly, promising even less friction.
Some silicone lube? Not sure if it is "rope safe" but it would certainly help reduce friction. And there is always the universal lubricant - water
Steve P no need, not with proper dyneema
@@rlhydn3438 Not to argue, but not everyone has "proper Dyneema" (there appear to be thousands of variations now) and AFAIK, heat is the enemy regardless - there's a vid somewhere of some winch rope melted on the drum...
Tested with a load cell... it’s been proven that the friction created with these static rings is enormous and contributes to additional load on the winch motor.
They save a lot of weight in the rigging bag though.
Friction adds about 60% to the weight of the soft shackle, so buy a much larger shackle than you would with a regular snatch block
@@stevep8773 There's fewer kinds than you think. Most of the same thing with a different label
Need to test the heat in the ring as well. There will be deflection in the metal that will bleed heat into rope. All of the heat energy is not purely from friction.
The ring was ice cold mate. well after that test anyway.
You are not deflecting that ring in any meaningful way. Even at well beyond rated load capacity. The only thing you need be mindful of is chafe. Ideally the ring should be running on a chafe protector or some old fire hose. If you're going to use this method on a very long pull a bit of electricians wire pull lubricant helps.
