  • A brief historical and technical overview of the Dungong submarine from Barotrauma.
If you enjoy, please leave a like and a comment, as I'm considering expanding this series to other vessels, and potentially as a means to highlight my favorite subs from the workshop, with their creators' permission.

The dugong is the first sub I used in Barotrauma (outside the tutorials of course). Loved it ever since and have upgraded to the R-278 Dugong from the workshop which has everything I could need in a familiar package.

This has to be everyone’s first sub, either in a crew or on your own it’s damn hard to screw this up.
At least until the engineer drops a fuel rod and the whole ship goes up in flames.

Love the dugong. My and my friends' first submarine. Thanks to it's small size and not many things to repair it was easy to navigate it inside smaller caves, and get around inside it to maintain the sub. We completed the game with it, because we made it available as a tier 2 and 3 sub because we liked it so much.

A solid start to the series, I think this works well. We've had plenty of experience actively choosing the Humpback over the Dugong specifically because of its lack of manufacturing capacity, so it may be a point to bring up on the Humpback. However the Dugong is no longer the most inexpensive starting sub, as that now goes to the Barsuk, the infinite constantly recycled piece of junk sub.

The Dugong is the only sub I've really modified. Mine has an extra cargo compartment in the lower front. I hid the entrance in the armoury with the idea it would be for "sensitive", cargo. I also tweaked the engine to increase the speed to 30 km/h, but to keep it balanced I tripled the power draw and halved the durability. I wired up the diving suit lockers and air tank cupboards so they would refill the oxygen, and added a switch so I could turn it off to save power. I added a couple of batteries between the Reactor and the Junction boxes to act as a load damper to try to prevent over voltage when I manoeuvre hard (It works but not well, probably wasn't worth the effort). I put in a bang bang controller for the reactor so I would have enough power to manoeuvre hard and run the guns at the same time (I still run out of power and have brown outs if the fight goes on too long). I added a couple of extra suit lockers in the ballasts and hooked them up to the power circuit for the main ones. The most complex thing that I did by far was adding oxygen detectors in every room and wiring up the engine generator to only run long enough to bring the levels back up to 100% from 45% whenever it dropped that low in any room. This allowed me to stay in place for ages without chewing through fuel as I looted or mined. I also added switches so I could run it constantly like it normally does or just turn it off. I gave it a couple of batteries to act as a load damper as well (They seem to work fairly well here). The final upgrade I made was to add a second exit in the rear ballast. It looks a little wonky because I had to change the shape of the rear hull to make it fit properly, but it's functional and gives me options if the main exit is blocked for some reason. It's also much faster to access loot below the sub. I did start work on a silent running mode, but I didn't have space for the batteries it would need.
I started modifying a Humpback as well, but my PC started having problems and I haven't been able to play since. I'm quite keen to customise a Barsuk when I fix my PC and play again. That little peice of junk is really appealing to me!

I made one that has the little room in the front under the armory feed into a torpedo launcher, a railgun that cannot aim and can be fired from the command room or torpedo room. I was inspired by the railgun shell rack in the armory but its lack of heavy hardpoints. I assume its eather from some beta ir for looted railgun shells, but i thought it would be cool to add a torpedo launcher. In an attemt to ballance it, i removed the discharge coils to make it a better choice to buy after you have the money to upgrade its turrets.

i do love the dugong. it may not be all that special, but for what it is, it works pretty damn well. plus, once you've got the marks, moving from it to the orca isn't too painful - stuff gets shuffled around, but the overall shape and layout isn't too unfamiliar, and you're probably accustomed to working around your sub's blind spots by that point. that's assuming you want to move on from it in the first place, of course.

Yea I killed endworm in a dugong before so. This is good sub. Discharge coil exist for farming genetic/alien material.
Edit: also have the best intruder management. Mudraptors have to go through several doors and you have time to react with your diving suit save in the middle of the ship.

Ever since the new update my love for the Dugong is even greater. It is just well made for most missions while not having any real glaring weakness for a tier 1 submarine it is amazing.

You are correct! The Dugong does have batteries, but in my experience at least, they aren't enough to keep the sub going in heavy combat without upgrades, especially on longer missions.

In my experience you almost always at least undervolt the hell out of everything when you really push it, even with the batteries on.

I’d rather be in an Orca. The Coalition sent a Dugong after me, and they couldn’t survive the icebergs before getting to me -then my own sub just annihalted as it was diving to try and get to me.
    So pathetic.😂
