Hi, I want to make a comment on what you said in the discussion about “equality in wealth”. From a glance it might seem appropriate to have everyone maintain an equal level of wealth but the idea is fundamentally flawed. Reason: 1. People do not put in the same amount of work and effort for them to be making the same thing as someone who does less. 2. People (by nature) tend to not want to put in the work when everything is handed to them (do you get where I’m going with this?) 3. When these two factors come into play, it’ll cause an imbalance and the crumble of a functioning society. The only thing that motivates people to work is a need to provide or survive and when this factor has been removed, society grinds to a halt. For instance, if you’re given answers to an exam, what’s the purpose of the examination? You’ll no longer see a reason to study. Same thing applies here. What should be given to people is equity (a fair chance to the less privileged to stand on their own feet through government programs and the likes) not equality. The only way the society you were talking about can work without crumbling is through government totalitarian power (where everyone’s work output is monitored) this takes away free will, privacy and freedom. Communism might seem innocent and humane on the surface but it’s way worse than capitalism. I’d advise to do some more research on this (preferably through twitter, google and most platforms are censored and manipulated) Capitalism >>> communism

i don't see it. he has a degree in social work. he's not getting wealthy with that. He needs to learn a skill more valuable to the marketplace and then be exceptional because he is in Nigeria.

You can't be talking about anything without any space for consideration of emotions. Many of us still have passion, personally I'm struggling to keep my passion alive everyday in this country. People have worked and struggled until they stop one day without knowing that they've even stopped because it's become so hard. 9:11 I'm poor right now, it's definitely not my choice. When it comes to begging, I can't even beg someone who owes me for my money. I don't like to have to ask for things, it's either I deserve it or I don't and in either case I feel it's on the person to do the right thing. I shouldn't have to beg for what is mine, same for what isn't mine, the owner will choose to give me 🤷🏾♀️. Some people have better mindset, yet they don't have much more than me either. Hearing people talk about concepts and have what are often difficult conversations can be a very helpful way to use entertainment to enrich the conversations we have in our culture (and consequently that discourse shapes our culture). what i see here is privilege at full blown play. you can tell people to get up and do something, but don’t ever think the 100% reward for hardwork is success; it’s not! success is often a complex interplay of circumstances, opportunities, and sometimes sheer luck. we’ve seen it play out a lot; it’s as mundane as that classmate that won’t read as much as you’ve ‘diligently’ read in school, and still pass than you. some don’t even write as substantial as you. also, privilege isn’t just about money; it’s also about knowledge, exposure, accessibility, opportunities, ableism (this is one whole big conversation on its own). even to not have “poor mentality”, is also a privilege. many hardworking individuals face systemic barriers that make it challenging to translate their efforts into success, and this is practically what the speakers on the ‘poor’ end of the discussion are trying to tell you. and saying nigeria is an enabling environment, that’s a blatant dishonest statement. nigeria has dampened potentials more than you can ever think of. and the only thing that largely makes you different from these people is the said privilege; you need to go out there and see for yourself, how much nigerians are incredibly talented and potentially endowed but what stand between then and where they want to be is simply resources and opportunities. please go out and touch grass more, so you can be in tune with reality. societal conversations as this; your narrowed privileged position shouldn’t be the bar (measure of impact or influence), it only makes sense that the standards for judgment should reflect the 'average man’s reality’, or at least, the experiences of the most affected populations. deal with data, statistics; not personal anecdotes or isolated experiences. you can walk people through the path of success (at least, so that they can be as successful as you are), but you can’t separate these limiting factors in judging or deciding if they ‘choose to be poor’. ciao!

@ISRAELFAMOYIN I live a privileged life, that's why I said what I said. Many Nigerians, especially those from poor homes, lack the support ppl need to actually build wealth. I know a lot of my acquaintances who not only have to support themselves from a very young age but also have to support their parents and their siblings. At the end of the day, any income they get is consumed and not even enough, talk more of having money enough to set aside to make certain investments that would improve their economic status. Poverty is not about mindset or mentality or anything like that, If you don't have support, it's very hard to be rich. Especially as a young, hustling Nigerian. if you don't have adequate support and your parents know nobody wealthy, you are going to be poor for a long time. Are there things poor ppl can do to slightly improve their economic status? Yes But moving from being poor to being rich is not very attainable. Nigeria is a very stifling country for poor ppl.

yes it still a choice. humans will always be humans. some people will always be poor. because that's just how the world works. but it is still up to you whether to let the laws of the universe be your fate or you defy it.

Poverty is not a choice. Many poor people have tried to leave poverty, but we need to remember that location and circumstances of the poor man will determine how successful they will be. It will have to take one person to help that poor man to be rich in the future. Mindset does play a part to becoming rich, but without opportunity, there is no substance. Mindset can only take you so far. The girl in green-runs with capitalism, hence her perspective and insensitivity. The chief went through a lower socioeconomic status and built his way up, but someone helped him to get there because of the job he had. In Africa specifically, being poor is not a choice. Many have no choice but to be poor, no matter how much they try-education opportunities, parental guidance, career advancement, etc., it all places a part. I disagree with the girl with the green dress on education. Education is a major key to success-doesn’t have to be academia, but as long as knowledge is learnt, it’s very valuable. It’s very obvious that the rich see the world differently because their reality is not based on the everyday struggle of a poor man. Both live in different worlds that are interpreted differently. As someone who was born with a gold spoon in their mouth and never experienced poverty-I cannot imagine myself being poor, because I’ve had friends who were poor, and watching them live their life was depressing. Hence I don’t think being poor is a choice as many factors play key to keep one in poverty, especially in Africa.

Poverty can be for a time, especially when proper resources are not in reach to ascribed to success out of poverty. but with determination better will come and wisdom applies to one's spending habits to not go back to poor in poverty Many wants to keep up with the joneses to wear, drive, and spending to get the best things and not having discernment for future knowledge and wisdom in spending habits. I love the idea of organizing this. Being able to hear things from different perspective. What I didn't like here is the idea of attaching the rich and poor tag to their names. It was not actually necessary.
It’s a choice to be rich but it’s not a choice to be poor especially in countries like Nigeria. It’s harder for those that are poor to escape that kind of life because they don’t have the resources and support needed. Mindset alone isn’t enough. You need support. The notion that socialism is bad is a big misconception. Historically, under socialism before colonization, Afrika and its people was doing much better than under capitalism. All of the countries labeled “underdeveloped” in the world are exploited by others the west and are a product of not only imperialists and colonialist exploitation but also by CAPITALISTS and CAPITALISM.

Opportunity does not come to us anymore, we all go out to search for it in our different way. But that doesn't guarantee you'll see it early. The only secret to come out of poverty is to be consistent in yourself to become a better person.
Interesting conversation. On poverty being a choice, I believe both sides have a point, and there is no clear-cut answer to it. Some people actually stumble on wealth. There are people that would never have been rich if they werent born into it. Even with the wealth, they are still lazy and not smart. That said, the place of hard work and smart work can not be discarded. It is, in fact, critical. But again, some people do all the hard work and still do not come into the opportunity. Cases in point, the guy in white sounds like someone who has succeeded with hard work while the one in green seems not to have DESPITE his hard work. I think wealth is God + hard (smart) work + opportunity.

Many Nigerians, especially those from poor homes, lack the support ppl need to actually build wealth.
I know a lot of my acquaintances who not only have to support themselves from a very young age but also have to support their parents and their siblings.
At the end of the day, any income they get is consumed and not even enough, talk more of having money enough to set aside to make certain investments that would improve their economic status. Poverty is not about mindset or mentality or anything like that, If you don't have support, it's very hard to be rich.
Especially as a young, hustling Nigerian.

Poverty is not a choice. Many poor people have tried to leave poverty, but we need to remember that location and circumstances of the poor man will determine how successful they will be. It will have to take one person to help that poor man to be rich in the future.
Mindset does play a part to becoming rich, but without opportunity, there is no substance. Mindset can only take you so far. The girl in green-runs with capitalism, hence her perspective and insensitivity. The chief went through a lower socioeconomic status and built his way up, but someone helped him to get there because of the job he had.
In Africa specifically, being poor is not a choice. Many have no choice but to be poor, no matter how much they try-education opportunities, parental guidance, career advancement, etc., it all places a part. I disagree with the girl with the green dress on education. Education is a major key to success-doesn’t have to be academia, but as long as knowledge is learnt, it’s very valuable.
It’s very obvious that the rich see the world differently because their reality is not based on the everyday struggle of a poor man. Both live in different worlds that are interpreted differently.
As someone who was born with a gold spoon in their mouth and never experienced poverty-I cannot imagine myself being poor, because I’ve had friends who were poor, and watching them live their life was depressing. Hence I don’t think being poor is a choice as many factors play key to keep one in poverty, especially in Africa.

It’s an insult to the majority of working Nigerians who are up from sun up to sun down, literally the foundation of the small functionality of the country to say that they choose their condition. The country would be nothing without them. We can do without Obi Cubana but we cannot do without the farmers and market women.

It’s a choice to be rich but it’s not a choice to be poor especially in countries like Nigeria. It’s harder for those that are poor to escape that kind of life because they don’t have the resources and support needed. Mindset alone isn’t enough. You need support. All 3 of the rich ones got some form of support that helped them get to where they are.

Opportunity does not come to us anymore, we all go out to search for it in our different way. But that doesn't guarantee you'll see it early. The only secret to come out of poverty is to be consistent in yourself to become a better person.
Interesting conversation. On poverty being a choice, I believe both sides have a point, and there is no clear-cut answer to it.
Some people actually stumble on wealth. There are people that would never have been rich if they werent born into it. Even with the wealth, they are still lazy and not smart.
That said, the place of hard work and smart work can not be discarded. It is, in fact, critical. But again, some people do all the hard work and still do not come into the opportunity. Cases in point, the guy in white sounds like someone who has succeeded with hard work while the one in green seems not to have DESPITE his hard work.
