I know this is an old video but you had enough detail where I could figure out what bolts go where on my XJ!! I was thinking i lost a extremely long bolt but i had the matching shorter one that your video so clearly demonstrated! Again Thank you for this great video. My new engine is in, transmission is in and I am doing the fuel system in tomorrow. Hopefully have it running by 4th of July! The rebirth of this 29 year old XJ.

Other than that, the video was very well put together and I would love to see more Jeep videos in the future, like how to get rid of annoying "rear lamp failure" lights on the on board computer. You were right when you said the setup would be similar for other jeeps. We did encounter a FEW differences while takin the pump off my grand cherokee. But nothing that looked much different than your setup.
That adjusting screw is not there at all, so to get the belt we turned the tension pulley. We used a crowbar for leverage.
Secondly at 3:29, We had to soak that connection with some rust penetration over dinner before it would break loose. Would have collapsed the line if we didn't use lube, giggidy. 7:26 No bracket to worry about.
Installing new pump tomorrow, expecting it to be easier than removing the old one. I hope this info is useful to any WJ owners.

We cut the EGR tube that goes between the manifolds and then welded the fittings shut.
I just pulled the vacuum lines and capped them off at the intake manifold, and left the valve on the intake. Some people make a blockoff plate and get rid of the valve on the intake.
Took the solenoid off the fender and taped the harness to the loom that runs right next to it.

Matt, you F***ing crack me up! Entertainment aside, you're vids are great help. I have a small leak on 90 YJ and will be changing the pump soon. Love the 20' fluid geyser across the garage!

  • @bleepinjeep
    @bleepinjeep  11 років тому

It can if you run low on fluid. When the fluid gets low you will get air in the system and or the fluid will boil. This can cause excess wear on the pump. You also may need to purge air from the system. Just leave off the cap and turn wheel from lock to lock several times. If you never ran low on fluid then it is probably unrelated and just needs to be changed anyway.

  • @bleepinjeep

probably the 8.25 as the 44 is very rare and only on a 87 2wd. You can tell by the shape. I have the TSL bias ply and love em. The boggers are pretty much for mud only.

Just did this today. Thanks for the guide. I don't know if its just mine or not but mine is a 96 Cherokee sport, some of the bolts are in different Places, the tensioner is pointed the opposite way, and the bolt that goes thru that is in the middle of a tensioner pully right below the PS pump pulley... Same basic idea tho. Really helped to take the air box and fan out. Simple to do and makes it a breeze.

I learned a lot Joel... The pump wasn't even on the list. I did the track bar a tie rod u joints wheel bearings and the steering gear box. I put it all back together and found that the PS pump was too weak...

well if you can, get a wrench on the nut below it. if not you could pull the pump and turn the pump in circles to get it off. Or cut the hardline if you have to. I think they are about 15-20$.

Any advice for getting a stubborn pressure hose off the pump? The bolt should spin around the hard line but it won't budge. In fact the nut that its threaded into on the pump itself came loose first. I could probably cut the hard line and unscrew both of them together and try to separate them later. Tried a lubricant but now that the lower nut is loose the whole thing keeps turning.

The WJ has a coil spring rear suspension whereas the XJ has leaf spring, so that would require major modification. Also the WJ front axle is a low pinion whereas the xj is high pinion. You are creating a lot of work for yourself.

I have a question on my 1999 Jeep Cherokee 4L I6. The other day I replaced the alternator and when got it all out back together it started making that squealing noise like it has a pulley alignment issue. I went ahead and replaced the tension pulley. That worked for a day or so but then it was right back at it. It squeels real bad when I turn on the A/C but the sound is coming from the area around the tension pulley and the power steering pulley. I did the water test on ribbed side and the sound goes away.
    have any suggestions?

I like that you show most of your stuff on a renix, every other video you see is 91+.
Since yours is just a wheeler why dont you work on getting rid of some of the vacuum stuff? I have gotten rid of the EGR and am working on the cruise control (doesnt work) and vacuum disconnect stuff now. Mine is a DD.
That power steering setup is the 87-95 style, in 96 they changed it a little, but its still pretty close. I run Dexron in the power steering system, same as trans. One less fluid to carry around.

Yes, make sure to press the pulley on about the same on the new pump as it was on the old pump. If it's out of alignment you'll have to take it off and push or pull the pulley in or out a bit.

It would have helped if you showed us the reason why you changed the pump? have 2000 jeep Cherokee Sport never made any type pump noise until i had a garage swap a leaking line, returned the jeep to me and as soon as i started it i could hear pump noise.have taken it back to the clown who changed the hose and he tells me someone hand to run the pump dry,yes him, this never happened to me. So he tells me that what im hearing is the bering in the pump then tells me to leave it alone it's not really bad.So i took it a jeep dealer and had him listen too it, A tech listened to it and tells me what he hears is normal, well ive put 40 thousand miles on this jeep and never had to listen to the power steering pump at idle.(If you have any idea's drop me a line). To me it sounds like a worn bering. To me the pump makes some small belt noise when you first start it up then that turns into berin noise.Never made this noise until the hacker swapped out the power steering line.
