Kivenkantaja is my favourite album too. The songs just flow perfectly into each other, like this one does into the gorgeous instrumental 'Tuulen Tytär'.
Your interpretation of the lyrics is interestingly positive, personally I always saw it as a bit more grim story: that this *is* a war-weary veteran who has survived the battle but at what cost? And the war is not over yet, either, but another battle looms on the horizon, while a solitary eagle overlooks the destruction of people, villages, memories. And at the end, the warrior buries his splintered sword into the ground: "At the end of the journey, nothing remains."
Oh, and the folky interlude melody is played on the accordion!

This is indeed my favorite album of all time, Moonsorrow or otherwise. I like the catchy riffs, the increased folk relative to later albums, and just incredible atmosphere, pacing, and storytelling aspect.
I fell in love with Moonsorrow and this album having never understood a word, but I never needed to. Looking them up later, they add something to be sure, but it's the music--and not the lyrics--that speaks to my soul.
As Remy pointed out, the folk-sounding instruments are achieved with keyboards, although the "boing" (I believe) is a jaw harp.

Keep doing more of them. I'd recommend Voimasta ja Kunniasta - another moonsorrow's epic album.

Because you're asking, Verisakeet is my fav because it felt like a complete journey from start to finish. Every song was a chapter and visually you could imagine exactly what was happening. And i liked the overall balance of what makes Moonsorrow so great.
I do have a soft spot for Tulimyrsky. Which I'll probably get you to do next.

Earlier Moonsorrow is more folkier, more keyboard heavy, more epic, and a bit more catchier and easier to listen to.
They then went to a more heavier, darker, progressive sound. Still epic and still full of catchy riffs tho.
All of their music is great when taken into mind of what they were wanting to acheive with their sound rather then what the listener thinks they should sound like. (Which I did with Varjoina Kuljemme Kuolleoden Maassa when I first heard it but I rate it as high as any of them now)

I see the lyrics through a Finn's eyes. It means that this song is kinda bittersweet to me, this lone soldier is contemplating his whole existance. He's always alone and against the odds, but yet he survives just a bit longer. He's tired. This is just my personal opinion, but the lyrics can also be seen as a reflection of our history in Finland. We did not want to fight but were not given a choice.
