To sum up finnish rap scene looking it from the outside (as a metal head that appreciates any good music without genre borders), anything before Fintelligens (1997->) was a wild west. from 1997 to about 2005 almost everything followed up what Fintelligens did to make rap in Finland popular. The OG scene has been going on strong until today and the commercial rap scene has changed a lot with the trends of the world, from pop-rap to nowdays autotune and mumble rap. Popularity of music is hard to pinpoint now days as the youth listens what becomes popular and/or pops up from social media and millenials, like myself, keep to their old playlists as we feel the most of the new music is not good enough to replace the music we had in our youth.
Interesting that you said that the 1990 one was a banger, as it was the biggest hit of the year, and hasn't really been forgotten after that either. In general, the band, Raptori, was extremely popular in its time, and I actually still like the music. About how popular rap is in Finland: Before Fintelligens, it wasn't really popular at all - there were some popular bands of course, but it wasn't even close to Finnish rock in popularity. Nowadays, Finnish rap is extremely popular, as well as Finnish pop, but personally I hope we will soon get back to a more rocky music scene 😁 Two of my favourite Finnish rap songs are: Gasellit x Anna Puu: Lumi Pyhimys x Vesta: Kynnet, kynnet
Rap has become the most listened genre in Finland like the last 5ish years. All the top most listened artists is rap. BUT the rap genre has changed so much that people who have been listening to rap since the early days dont really like modern rap (like other places aswell i guess) But its still mostly people under 30 so pop, metal rock etc i would say generally is still more common.

I personally like Finnish rappers who perform in English. Among them, I could recommend Don Johsno's Big Band (e.g. Road), Palface (Back to Square One) and Redrama (Clouds). And of course good old Bomfunk MC's 😁
Cheek and Elastinen (from Fintelligens originally) are the most popular of all time. Cheek had some crazy stadion-size concerts. He quit his career a few years ago. Nowadays maybe JVG is the biggest.
Popular: Cheek, Gettomasa, "tervetuloo helsinkiin" and Pojat on poikii. (will get views) These artists/songs will do well based on numerous other videos of the topic. "pojat on poikii" is a wildcard, it hasn't been really dug into in this reaction format, but could be quite the hit.
I, who have listened to everything from the 90s (thanks big brother🧡) until today, I say that Fintelligens and Pikku G bring back memories. but today I would say that Gettomasa is dominating! and RIP MKDMSK🕊️❤
The MC of Bomfunk MC's, Raymond Ebanks, grew up in the UK, though, and assuming you're old enough, you might remember that song being a huge hit all over Europe. Also, to answer your question, Finnish rap is huge in Finland, since the early 2000s when it blew up. Pop and rap dominate the charts, rock is a solid 3rd big genre. Metal has occasional hit songs - if a major metal band puts out a new song or an album, it hits the charts for a week and then fades away. From other genres, iskelmä/schlager is probably the biggest, especially among middle aged and elderly people. Most Finns listen to a little bit of everything, and there's a lot of blend between genres. I check out what's trending in Finland (Suomen virallinen lista) and what's trending in the US (Billboard Hot 100) about once in 6-12 months and I'd say metal and iskelmä are bigger here than there (with iskelmä - duh, it's a Finnish version of a German music genre, it's not big outside Europe), but stuff like reggae and country are tiny in Finland but big in the US. As for my personal favorites, from the ones on the video, Asa, Pyhimys (also a member of Teflon Brothers) and Mikael Gabriel are some of favorites, Skandaali is hilarious. But, my favorite Finnish rapper is Tommy Lindgren, of the alt hiphop group Don Johnson Big Band. He's tied as my favorite MC of all time with the Brighton artist Ren. If you're gonna listen to Don Johnson Big Band, I'd recommend One Mc, One Delay, Harlem Davidson and Nightman, all from their 2nd album Breaking Daylight (2003).
I've got a song suggestion: A36, Averagekidluke, Ibe, Cledos - Samma gamla vanliga (Remix) ---- The remix is a Sweden/Finland combo, og is Swedish. The song has three languages in it, Swedish, Finnish and English and it's really cool how they all flow together! This was such an earworm for me when it came out lol Also: Yeboyah. I'm kinda like you, not really in to the rap being produced these days. Sometimes you find some hidden gems, but the classics up to like 2010 are what I still listen to. From Finnish rap I think my favorite one is Ruudolf, very chill and none serious, fun lyrics and sick samples on his songs. Very down to earth, although jokingly sometimes boasts himself. Also not one to spam swear words and oversexualize his lyrics which I personally appreciate, as I think both of those are just lazy songwriting. He quit making songs like a decade ago though which is a shame. We have a Finnish championship rap battle competition yearly in Finland and Ruudolf won that twice in the early 2000s when it was getting started. That being said if you want to check some more Finnish rap I recommend Ruudolf
Cheek (The BEST Rapper of all time, i think). Jare Henrik Tiihonen (Cheek) ended his career in 2018 but still this day people listen his songs and wish that he will come back (even when we know that will not ever happen)
You should check out the rap artist named Cheek. He ended his career in 2018 but was by far the most popular rap artist ever in Finland, and even the most popular domestic artist in finland. Cheek is also my favorite artist.

Okay I'll say it, it's regressing hard since you just simply cannot make no money off of it. It's a stable joke in finnish rap how you are broke when doing it. Around 2008-2015ish was the peak times. There was just soo many great people doing it in consistent basis. People like Are and Stepa have went again to school to become teachers because you don't get enough money for the amount of work. It used to be cd's and even after there were these tiny local labels that helped to weed out people who are truly very talented and sign them into their one that would suit them the best but that's all gone now. Like just couple could go over that treshold like Asa and Pyhimys and for Pyhi it was a lot about the group Teflon Brothers which they say aloud that it's hardly even trying and just for creating money. Now that you need to be in major, ehich have never had any idea about who to sign and those that have come out of it have talked how horrible the experience was. Like when Juno was a big name for being in a major but said he would make like a 1000 songs and 1 would get picked and it's hard in here since if you ask feats and it won't get picked, it's a bit hard to ask these people again even if the circles are small. Like finnish people don't like really lyrics so it's mostly "junttiräppi" like hillybilly-rap. Someone makes something where ia doubles etc. it will go still to this day over peoples heads and obly rap about partying and women is something to listen to. Oh and memy rap, because offfcoourse you cannot take rap seriously that would just be silly. Because we don't have hoods so talking about whatever really with that street aesthetic is seen childish or something. I really don't get it.. There was like a brief glimpse of it seeming like right people would get their dues. Around Ruger Hauer times (again a group with Pyhimys but a bit more serious) but then it again just nosedived. Also at the Asa/Avain - Punainen Tiili, Fintelligens, Skandaali (who can have over the top songs but dude is Great technical writer), Bomfunk etc. times it was kinda looked how it should be. Like it's not Trying to be something it just Is what it is. There was the aesthetic and not lyrically yet as high bar Neccesarily and people were fine with it all.

The 1980's was not really remarkable in Finnish rap. It was quite non-existent except General Njassa. That is why the introduction was so short. Pääkköset and Raptori were the first rap acts that gained popularity in Finland. 1990's again, would say there was nothing after Raptori for a long time. Next big acts were Paleface, Fintelligens and Bomfunk MC's. They were commercially quite successful and became household names in Finland except Bomfunk MC's which was actually a little bit on the "wrong genre" and it was quite short lived. Paleface is still today a big name, but he raps/sings mostly in Finnish these days. In the beginning of the 2000's suddenly there was a whole lot of action going on. Mostly I think because of the pioneering Fintelligens which also put up a record company. But the rap songs started to be remind each other. It was following American style of rap. The biggest name grew to be Cheek. He ended his career some years back after having sold out gigs on the biggest arena in Finland: Olympic stadium. I never got into his music that much. I liked Asa (Avain) more. And Asa has a very different vibe in his music anyways. Where Cheek gained popularity also with his music videos and television appearances, Asa stayed at the background. In the 2010's JVG has become the biggest name. They started their career rapping about ice hockey and games in general. Their vibe has changed a little since their beginning. But I still would say, they usually become most streamed whenever they release something new... Pyhimys is the goldfinger of Finnish rap. He does solo and is part of groups: Räkä-Aki (solo alias), Teflon Brothers (a popular band in Finland) and Ruger Hauer. Well, due to his success last year, Käärijä has become a name to follow. Some other bigger names today are Ibe, Gettomasa (born in Canada although a Finn) and Gasellit. There is also a lot of Finnish rappers that are ethnically only partly Finnish or not at all. Some of the biggest names at the moment are Sexmane and Ege Zulu. The scene has changed quite a bit along the years and decades. Personally I do listen to rap, but it is not at all my favourite music. I would still say Finland is the nation of headbangers. Metal scene is vast as well and there are pretty good bands around. Even internationally. P.S. The video did not have one of the biggest rap songs of the past years: Pyhimys - Jättiläinen.
Personally, I still like Cheek's music. Otherwise, I think the rappers of the 2000-2010 century were better. Nowadays, the lyrics of Finnish rap artists are not my favorites, with a few exceptions. And it would be silly if I didn't say one of my favorites is my own man, who has been rapping for over 15 years under the name Kid1. 😁
I have to say that Finnish rap is more popular than metal in Finland, such a shame, when Finnish rap noways is fuckin shit. i like more early 2000's rap. but i listen more metal.
some songs don't sound like rap because they had a chorus and not a verse

Also at the Asa/Avain - Punainen Tiili, Fintelligens, Skandaali (who can have over the top songs but dude is Great technical writer), Bomfunk etc. times it was kinda looked how it should be. Like it's not Trying to be something it just Is what it is. There was the aesthetic and not lyrically yet as high bar Neccesarily and people were fine with it all.
some of these indeed dont sound like rap songs but thats mainly because the mf who made the list included mostly only choruses in the video D
gettomasa and mkdmsk are one of the most talented rappers in finland and gettomasa is prob most popular.
If your at least a bit intrested in finnish rap you should listen to gettomasa, kube or eevil stöö (tyyppaa viel)
All time my favorite is Cheek
I don't really like the couple last years. Either way I have been listening to new songs / spotify recommended from different genres for a long time. So I don't really repeat songs.
Anyway hope you enjoy dipping in to different cultures music even if you don't understand them.
Who's most succesful Finnish rapper? Have to be Cheek.

JVG is the best!!!!
