Anthrax - Lone Justice
would be awesome. I love how they always have something interesting going on in that song. The guitar main riff is pretty cool, sounds like the song could fit in a racing game. And it's the only part in the song where the bass doesn't do anything fancy. Whenever the guitar gets more simple, the bass gets more complicated. Frank Bello is super underrated in my opinion :)

I think a lot of it comes from major/minor confusion - when you play both the minor and major third in a chromatic run it creates that dark sound. Also, a lot of metal riffs are based on the harmonic or double harmonic scale, which has a weird jump from minor second to major third (augmented second I believe?). Really interesting point about the implied major harmony though!
The double harmonic scale does have a major 3rd, but the harmonic minor scale doesn't. I think you're confusing the harmonic minor scale with the phrygian dominant scale (which is derived from the harmonic minor scale, starting on the 5th).
