  • The ice on Flathead Lake was Solid again this year while I was in Montana at the beginning of February, but the fishing was a lot different than last year when I was there the first week of March. While there was plenty of ice, there really were not many people out fishing. The first day my brother and I spend the afternoon on the ice and only caught one lake trout. We marked very few fish. Quite different than we had expected. Where were the fish? There were lots of little perch marking all over the place which usually brings in the other species to feed on them. We even caught some 4 to 6 inch perch this year.
We soaked frozen baits for pike in the shallow weed beds without any success for pike. We drilled holes from depths of 12 feet to out over 50 feet of water and way off shore without much luck at all.
I spent the whole last day out on the ice searching hard. Covering lots of ground. Ended but back where I had started in the morning and finally a couple lake trout came in and bit. I lost a couple and finally landed one small lake trout that looked like it had tangled with a larger predatory fish. Either another lake trout, bull trout or northern pike. You can see the scales scraped off by the teeth.
Then shortly after a group of three whitefish came through and one bit a small spoon. Then that was it the remainder of the fish that came through few and far between did not want to engage in biting.
I'm not sure what happened or where are all the fish were, but we did not have luck in Sommers Bay like we did last year. That's fishing. I know there are still tons of fish in the lake, but its a huge lake and who knows where the next bite will turn up.
Thanks for watching this ice fishing season. I hope you enjoyed the videos coming out frequently and I'm glad to be able to be editing more again.
I might start editing some of my older footage just to keep some content coming out until I get fishing again in the spring.

Yeah last year caught much bigger ans more fish in the same Bay. This year for some reason not many fish around. You can see the size of fish present in the lake by that bite mark present on the lake trout.

Gotta love lakes that have the option of catching several species! I don’t have that option near Lillooet 🤔

Yes, down there in Montana they have performed a bit of a mixing pot fishery. So many species to be caught in the area in a lot of the hospitals.

That's awesome... how far up North are you? British Columbia? I'd love to go up Northern BC and fish some of the big lakes and reservoirs up there for Lakers and bull trout. Not sure how long the ice lasts this year though.
