I often go for formant shifters, lowering the same kick, and eq away the bits I don't need. Same goes for a bit of snap, crack or bite further up the frequency range.
It's better to use a bus if you want the kick to drive the saturation of other things. For example, if you have a kick and hat going to your saturation bus, every time the kick is triggered, it will distort the sound of the hats (as well as the kick itself). On the other hand, if all you care about is a fat kick, don't worry about making a send! Doing a video outlining this process very soon!
