Not to mention that little joke, omg. I feel like they're a patient and understanding person that even if they now have the condition, they'll overcome it by sheer patience. As someone with OCD and psychosis the absolute relatibility and sadness of this story hit home but so did the triumphant ending overcoming an obsession feels just like that this made me feel shockingly hopeful at the end 💖
As someone who went to therapy for OCD, this is no easy thing to defeat, it can manifest itself in so many ways. How the author expresses the manifestation of it as a demon feels so perfect. It intrudes into your thoughts and tries to whittle away at you. It tries to make you fall back into your habits or listen to intrusive thoughts. It threatens a feeling of dread and fear that something bad will happen if you don't listen to it but physically it has no power to harm you, it is primarily a psychological force. This is a wholesome story and I thoroughly enjoyed it.
That tapping guy is a perfect example of someone with OCD, ive had very minor ocd but one time I thought “open and close the door exactly 10 times or my mom will die. I know he said it wasnt OCD but this is exactly how i thought. Kinda crazy having something like this describe it so well. Crazy story man!
This is such a good story about OCD and recovering, because even though in this story the monster was real, when you have OCD that is how it feels, I really liked this story
OCD has had such a damaging effect on my life. The most terrifying part is how silent it all is to others. It's hard for others to understand how much this issue mentally wears down on you. This story really hits a soft spot in my heart. I love this so much.. Definitely teared up around the end.
I'm pretty sure I'm not the only one who's crying within 12 minutes of this video. I'm so happy that someone has made this story about the feeling of OCD and how immobilizing it is to some people. Thank you for give the story the audio reading it deserved.
Can I just say that it's awesome that there are subtitles available? I'm not a native English speaker and sometimes it's hard for me to perfectly focus so subtitles are a great help :)
So, from my understanding, the tapping guy transferred his curse to the narrator at the end. I don’t know if that’s really what happened, but, that’s what I gathered from it.
I think it’s almost a bluff. If it’s transferred he could just conquer it again. The demon feeds off anxiety and has to resort to speaking once it’s being played. Maybe his threat is the seed that gets planted in the protagonist but I wonder if he could possibly never let it get to a bad point. He asked about a credit card so he has a mind of steel. Demon can’t hurt anyone, resorts to trickery. Really I guess he just needs to make sure he’s not going to hell.
and the fact that the lights came back on and the "'demon" just left as soon as the happy woman came back seems to indicate that she has some sort of deterring effect against it. as if overwhelming happiness/positivity is like poison to it or something.
I have listened to all the videos you have uploaded. Sometimes I go back and re-watch. So I get so excited when you upload. You are my favorite storyteller. 💛 you're amazing I swear
This is such a touching story to me it really hits home. For years I’ve suffered with ocd specifically scrupulosity. I couldn’t live, I literally wasn’t in charge of my own life, a slave to rituals and dread and fear and doom. And then I learned how to simply not give a shit about the fear and thoughts and accept my doom. It was extremely hard and dreadful not to give in to my rituals but I finally feel free I’d never thought I’d get to enjoy that feeling. The climax that took place in the end of the story is exactly how it felt to resist my rituals, “are u willing to pay the price of everlasting suffering and doom” I feel like I fought and defeated my demon
Whoever wrote this is a f---ing boss more stories like this this was absolutely amazing appreciate your work as ever and I'm really just commenting to help Al Gore's rhythm

Oof. Amazing as always. I have OCD, not as bad as the one portrayed in the story, but whew, that hit a spot of relatability and horror while being exceedingly wholesome. Dark Somnium is also my fav creepy story reader, or general narrator. You do amazing sound design, fantastic voice acting, and always select great stories, not just shitty cheesy ones. I'm really picky with reading and stories in general, I used to want to be a writer as a kid, so I know what flaws to look for that I judge my own writing for, and so I get really picky about writing. That plus ADHD means reading stories becomes very difficult, even short ones. Somehow, Dark Somnium and only one or two other narrator channels are able to satisfy my book nerd self with horror outlets via great story selections, and honestly, Dark Somnium is the best in terms of voice acting, the others can sound monotonous, so when I see stories, even ones I've heard before, narrated by you, I get so giddy. You get me so immersed in the universe, I love it. Thanks for all you do, Dark Somnium!
The credit card part is pretty funny but I’ve been in situations were they are just too intense and scary and I tend to say something stupid, it’s just something about our mind that makes us say this stuff for some odd reason.
i swear idk what it is about your videos but they keep me on the edge of my seat every time i sit here and listen to one of these stories im flooded with crazy emotions almost feeling like im actually there witnessing everything. All your videos are amazing
This was awesome. The subtlety, the relatability, a protagonist that’s super likeable, and the girl giving some serious comic relief with her entry at the ending 😂 after the credit card line of course. The demon seems to feed off of anxiety, and is defeated by happy or confident people. Even if it did switch over to the protagonist at the end, the demon’s screwed because it seems that all it can do is intimidate.

At first, I was thinking the narrator would be the devil, especially when he said he'd be fine with the world ending just to make it stop. Like he was trying to prove that everyone had a breaking point where they'd let everyone else suffer for personal relief. What ended up happening was interesting nonetheless, though I feel that the ending could maybe be more heavy hitting. Maybe an epilogue where the psychologist guy gets to where he was going and turns the lights on... then off... then on... then off again.
I think Steven King had a short story along the same lives in one of his older collections. Guy visits a shrink, starts telling him about how his ocd habits are saving the world. I forget the details but the shrink gets him to stop but by the end he ends up having to take over doing all the tapping and what not in the guys place.
