I went into a Jewish grocery store and they had this. I hate mayonnaise so most dips are bad for me. I checked the ingredients and I was surprised to see this dip does not have mayo. I bought it and ate with wheat crackers and I was blown away. Great dip by the Greeks. Sincerely from a Black American.
a year a ago i travel to Athens. i try this and i absolutely love it. unfortunately i forget the name. i go to several Greek restaurant in China but never find it. later i decided to Google it and maybe cook it for my self. unfortunately i cant share picture but i succeed!
I don't specify exactly which, because a lot of people outside Greece have difficulty finding it. Fish roe or as we call it Tarama is salted and cured fish eggs and to make Taramosalata we use Tarama either from cod or carp. Best variety and the most expensive is white tarama which is pure fish eggs, and that's the best to use for Taramosalata. Pink tarama is not the best but ok too; it is pink because they use pink food color.
@@GreekCookingMadeEasy In Romania carp tarama is redish ( the roes are themselves redish) , as well as the mixture of sweat water fishes'( but lighter), while herring's is yellowish. Some people like to feel the roes in the dip ( like moustard seeds), especially the carp and the pike ones, so they prefere to mix them by hand ( wooden spoon)
Very nice video! I dont know if this recipe is from a different part of Greece, as I know we all have different variations of foods in all parts of the homeland. But, I use most of the same ingredients except I use homemade purea (Mashed potato) instead of bread, and I dont use dill. I only use dill for when I make tzatziki. And, I usually use olive oil, but vegetable oil is good too. The key is definitely adding everything in slowly and not blending too much. There is nothing more tasty than baking home made Greek bread, and eating it with home made taramaosalata and tzatziki, olives, even some regga LOL, and some kefalotiri. After all the salt, I should probably check into a hospital to have all the sodium pulled out of my body lol.... Then for dessert, a nice bowl of avgolemono haha... Or maybe rizogalo..
Yes, there are regional variations of this recipe. Either with potato or bread. Of course you can use Olive oil. I just prefer another lighter vegetable oil, because I find that the fish roe taste is strong enough and doesn’t need the addition of a strong oil taste. And yes, hahaha you can eat it with many things but please don't end up in the hospital 😅!
A mixer- lid with a hole on it, to poor the oil slowly, would have been helpful, especially for The begginers 😂 ( dropping too much oil at once could get the mixture separated 😅)
Love the recipe but the music was put offing that I had to mute it,couldn't concentrate , didnt go with the teachings,no offence, music was ok-ish but didnt go with video when your trying to concentrate,im to honest.
It is a good cover of an Ellie Goulding song but yea a bit distracting I would prefer a voiceover instead but it’s call UA-cam not Mytube. I appreciate the recipe !
I have had the good and bad of Taramosalata. So I was very lucky to try it when it was good. I have had it when it was bad however. It was disgusting( it was fishy). I don’t like fish. But I will say if you had Taramosalata made right. It is not fishy at all. I was reading one taramosalata recipe where they added mayonnaise 🤢 it was from a Greek Church cookbook and I know what that recipe was talking about because I had it served to me in a restaurant.
Unfortunately, most of the Greek Church cookbooks are filled with counterfeit recipes LOL... Maybe 10-20% of the recipes are actually good. And I never heard of such a sin as to add Mayo to Taramosalata.. That is a shame, sorry you had to be traumatized by something like that.... You need to find a good Greek friend for good recipes. I was lucky to have a gourmet Greek cook for a mom, and she had incredible recipes for everything.
The fish roe (eggs) used to make Taramosalata have been kept in salt for a long time before used in this recipe, i.e. they are not raw. That's why to make Taramosalata you need to add bread, and to avoid adding any salt to it.

Thank you, it's normally fresh, not in a tin

Hahaha thank you!

You are right, now I have something like that, although the mix doesn't get separated
Thank you!
My pleasure 😊

Are the fish eggs cooked or raw?

In Romania we use semolina instead of bread. And a hand mixer.
That is interesting. I will try it 🙌

You could call Taramosalata, Houmous of the Sea, when done properly. It almost tastes like a cheese spread.
Yes I know what you mean. However, what is really important is the main ingredient: the fish roe itself needs to be of very good quality
Nice song
Thank you
