I got into fighting games after getting burnt out from live service games, so the prospect of the big fighting game franchises going live service and the FGC needing live service for a new fighting game to be worthy of their time genuinely concerns me, between the damage live service has done to the industry, the stress put on the devs, and the monetization creep are things I do not want to see happen to this genre, we shouldn't sacrifice fun for the sake of engagement

      @Hyziant 13 днів тому +7

Yes, I'm glad that fighting games **compared to other genres** have been pretty light on the scummy business practices plaguing other genres. My main concern is that Capcom will see the fan backlash and think
"Alright, so gamers don't want a great, fully fledged game on release, they just want a steady content drip"
because I think that'll lead fighting games down a darker path. Personally, I think SF6 has been a great overall package since day 1 and haven't felt the need for new costumes/content. Of course I wouldn't be mad if they added more, but it's not personally necessary.

@@Hyziant Yeah. People get super-defensive when you point the finger at "gamers" for damaging the quality of the gaming industry, but this is certainly an area where I think it's true. The abject need for constant stimulation over time - the endless hype-cycle - just chews away at the notion of having a quality, finished product that you can just own.
It's like, would you rather a quality steak cooked and seasoned to perfection on Sunday or a whole week of reheated BigMacs? I think the BigMacs would win that in the present environment, even if collectively they cost more than the steak.

@@Hyziant i don't think folks want or need fgs to become even more "games as a service-ish", ppl were very vocal about how scummy the pricing on costume 3 was to them. It's just that since this is a game where they are releasing post launch content, it leaning so heavily on a mode most longtime fans see as a goofy distraction at best, coupled with the way they're handling stuff that audience DOES care about like character releases for example, being somewhat controversial, and the odd lack of communication compared to previously with the guys at the helm regarding everything, its all just headscratching and annoying. One thing to remember though, fighting games pretty much had ‘live service’ before life service.
I’m sure you know the numerous editions of SF2.

7:03 on the note of "SF feel like a game that wants to be games as service, but isn't" I forgot where I heard this but, there was a theory going around that this might have been the idea early on, and the best "evidence" for this was the fact that Battle Hub, World Tour, and Fighting Ground are very distinct modes in the menu. I think i remember when I first purchased SF6, I believe it had one of the modes as the base game (I think it was Battle Hub) and the other two modes were technically add-ons, even though they downloaded with the initial game anyways. So, some people theorize that one mode was going to be the "free" version, and the other modes were basically paid dlc

I've been out of the fighting game since the early 2000s, as soon as I started to be pretty bad at them. I grew up on arcades and KOF 97 was the last time I felt I was average enough to play those games.
So I've been all those years following the fighting communities as a watcher without being able to enjoy it properly.
World Tour made me buy SF6 and play it almost daily. Modern made me try multiplayer and still have some moderate amount of fun.
Capcom hadn't got a single dime from me for years. They got me with the Fighting Pass, and the costumes and WT content update.

I agree with the sentiment. Most WT players I know actually do not like most of the offers available either through the Fighting Pass or the Hub Store. We would much rather see less of those things if we had more content instead, be it new characters (so we had more story and more masters and skills), or features like some sort of New Game+ or making the dozens upon dozens of NPCs outfits to be farmable in WT that are for some reason unavailable for players.

And then directors or something will tell them "youre going to piss off our fans to no end" or "we have no idea how to even set up that project" and so you just have this weird mishmash where they dont want to commit fully to either but the GAS makes more money so producers and execs tell then to focus on the custom character stuff but then they still need to work on making alternate characters too which us even harder when its a guest character like from SNK and being a part of the SF6 team sounds like the most frustrating thing ever rn ngl

The fact that fighting games are selling characters is so weird to me. Vast majority of people will only ever main 1 character. League of Legends has a way better business model suited exactly to this, where you get to unlock 1-2 characters early on, the rest are on a free weekly rotation and if you want more characters, you can buy them or slowly unlock them by playing a lot. Most of the money then is made by skins - complete skins (like Overwatch), not individual skin items for item slots, so that way they don't have to worry so much about QA like Tekken either, allowing them to make the skins for cheap.
Better yet, DoTA2 just outsources the skin making to the community. The get dev/mod tools, you can model your own skin, upload it to the workshop, people can vote on it and then it will make it into the next battlepass/lootbox for a price and the devs share revenue with the creator. They created an ecosystem for their game. They're making new game modes with that too! And then the devs take ideas from mods to create event-gamemodes! How the hell is there not a single fighting game that comes with proper mod tools?! They are shooting themselves in the foot with this.

@@1InVader1 that's a very strange thing to say because Capcom has been selling characters since a lot of us has been born, ie; Super Street Fighter 2. There's a good amount of people using characters that were beyond the original cast of The World Warrior, more characters means more content and more ways to play the game. Not everybody, dare I even say most, people are not satisfied with the initial roster of a given game; look at SFV, almost nobody plays a character from the launch roster these days. There's a debate that all the extra content should be free; Max has been advocating Free To Play for a long, LONG time, but you'd be breaking a tradition Capcom has been running with for over 30 years that has seen plenty if success.

But yeah, I feel like what can be improved in the future for fighting games is paid DLC being the additional stuff.
Characters and maybe maps are free. But in return, the micro transaction (thus income) comes from skins and expansion packs for the single player.
E.g. world tour in sf6 hasn’t actually had any real actual updates to it beyond the masters added from DLC. But no new areas. No new missions and gameplay. No story expansion.
One thing I feel that will help fighting games sell and maintain relevance while still keeping its competitiveness, is having modes and other things that engage any kind of people.
And obviously still have a good ranked with a balanced game so even comp is a focus.

By the time this goes on sale, there will be a new console generations and then fighting game studios will abandon this game and re-release it with a higher number for the next console generation, because you gotta have the higher number fighting game for the new console - Tekken 8 could have been just a patch for Tekken 7.

You need to do concepts, get them approved, make them, and then go through an extensive QA process. With avatars in general, there are so many variables to account for (assets breaking under certain animations, overall quality being good enough for a variety of body shapes, etc). Rinse and repeat the QA process several times until the assets are good enough to sign off.

So I *am* the World Tour audience. It's a large part of why I bought the game and honestly? We're getting screwed. See, you can't DO anything with your World Tour character! You can't use them in Arcade Mode, you can't use them in offline VS, there's no "no levels" option, no way to fight them on any stage other than the Battle Hub, the characters do not transfer between systems, the Battle Passes are complete rip-offs, and the FOMO is completely nasty. Honestly Capcom's monetization towards the World Tour audience is a disgusting scam and it makes me not want to play the game.

So, about what Max was saying about the complexities of QA, like how to get these costumes working well in-game, how do new costumes take more than a year at this point to come out when the outfits on the avatars tend to perform well? Sure, we gotta consider the tournament scene and how even more crazy it is to make sure the new outfits work in this game. However, we got Outfit 3 for every character only a few months after the game came out, not to mention two new characters. We've had two major tournaments for this game afterwards and nothing went wrong. We keep getting shitty costumes for Avatars to suit a newer modern player base that I'm pretty sure SF6 has already lost most of a year ago. @Gamerznation704 Bruh, why are all of you hard-working people defending those who make more than twice the amount y'all make a year working on the games we love? Especially when they ask us to cough up $70-$100 for a game that offers much less than the previous titles (at least the stuff that we care about). If you're thinking, "well, what about World Tour and Battle Hub?" Then, I'll say to that "well, imagine if Virtua Fighter 6 added a racing mode, but the controls are clunky like Motor Kombat, full online multiplayer with only four tracks and eight characters and nothing else gets done to the game but new customizable items for just the vehicles?" Well, regardless, if y'all really like World Tour and Battle Hub and y'all play the game for that reason, then hey. However, for those who play the game for Ranked and Casual, especially on console, this amount of settling can only leave the people starving even more for new content to the point of leaving the game. Y'all are hurting the game at this point.

One thing I really hope they do is an actual update or DLC for world tour.
The potential for that mode is huge. And there’s more that could be done.
Whether in 6 or in 7, one thing that would be great is online co-op.
But the titan attack boss raid type thing they do for battle hub is a great idea and hope they eventually expand on it. One that would be great is ‘dojo battle’. Where you choose a team, and by winning matches and doing challenges, win points for you team, and if your team wins, you get more rewards.

If they can't do multiple skins a year, at least, do a character set for all the characters and do 1 skin for the character birthday. So that way, all characters get at 2 skins per year.
And I don't want to wait 10+ years for Cammy to have her killer bee outfit again.

Honestly I'd prefer they invest resources make new WT content like new cutscenes and missions, new stronger enemies. Make new cutscenes for the roster both in WT and FG, hell, let us allowed to change costumes in cutscenes just like SFV so they can even sell more, this would be amazingly approach. When I got a bit burned out from Ranked I went to play some World Tour but it got boring fast and then I thought: "Why the hell am I playing this slop when I have GoW and RDR2?" I didn't think much about the avatar stuff but seeing as resources are going toward that and not more main cast costumes I absolutely despise it now.

If they at the very least had some costumes for characters that were "low effort", like a default costume but with a small variation, or even just different colors in the battle pass I'd feel like grinding for them. But otherwise, seeing all that content for the avatar not only doesn't motivate me, but it kinda annoys me and that makes me wanna play the game even less.

Let's look at it this way. In less time since release (unless I am mistaken) Mortal Kombat 1 had more characters released, skins (or customizable costume pieces), and an entire story DLC.
I know Nether realm games don't really have a 10 year life cycle like other fighting titles, but still it's an impressive amount of content for the game. Even with SF5 it feels like we were getting way more regular updates and characters were releasing closer together per season. I guess if I cared about any of the DLC characters the wait wouldn't 've been this bad, but the only character that kinda makes me want to return to SF6 is Mai and not that much to be honest (love SNK games but she was never one of my go to choices).

I frankly hold the belief that the bar for fighting games has been heightened to a point that is nigh unreachable for a singular fighting game. I'm not trying to say the FGC is wrong for wanting more out of their games, but ask a FGC member what features they want most out of a new game and their answers could vary wildly. Rollback netcode, "traditional" vs. "new" playstyle (as in, resembling old Street Fighter or something like Guilty Gear Strive respectively), specific characters, offline/single-player modes, good story mode, e-sports potential, frequent content additions (as is the topic of the video), cool cosmetics, accessibility to new players, etc. Over time, the definition of 'bare minimum' for fighting games feels like it's getting more and more specific and demanding (I have not engaged with fighting games in a while, so this is just my impression as a spectator). And because you can't please everyone, different games will have different priorities as to which of these qualities they consider more important (SF 6 clearly prioritizing their more 'casual' audience), and those that they deem not as important equals thousands of players they lose/don't cater to, and as such, money they don't get. And for some reason, I find fighting game players are really quick to turn around on a game--I still don't get what exactly happened with DNF Duel (before the year-long DLC drought). And while some individual fighting games helped set this standard, that was mostly set by other types of games. Like Max said, games as a service have set a new standard for the industry that fighting games (in the way they have been designed since forever) are barely able to hold up to. Honestly, I'm waiting to see a big fighting game franchise try to go the Multiversus route and actually succeed, because I feel that that scenario could bring up a serious discussion of what do we want out of our games (and if we REALLY want fighting games to be more like games as a service).

Honestly as someone who into fighters in about 2021, I get extremely confused when people conflate costumes with "content" because that isn't a substantial change to how the game is interacted with or a wildly new experience, its just more transaction stuff, so it get annoying to hear people say that "where's the content?" when SF6 is arguably the most content rich SF game ever. Like World Tour on its own was a huge amount of content that helped get me even more hyped for the game alongside the actual game itself, and the fact Capcom is constantly updating it just makes it keep getting better and better.

    • @MagillanicaLouM

I think that's the difference maker here. A lot of fans, if not most, that have been around for longer couldn't give an iota about world tour, or the create a character battle hub stuff so it just is a matter of what they like about the game feeling neglected for what they see as just side modes. If things were paced differently there wouldn't be this backlash, the core of the controversy really is just the lopsidedness of it all and lack of communication really. Just some of the larger FGC tends to be bad at conveying their thoughts in a way that doesn't sound like someone trying give a controversial Twitter take out loud lol

    • @gaminglakitu
      @gaminglakitu 13 днів тому +2

@@MagillanicaLouM I get what you're saying. I can't say that I inherently want less DLC characters per season pass because of World Tour and stuff, but I understand why it is that way, even without World Tour since they are making these characters as polished as possible. I can say that the break they have taken between both 2nd and 3rd DLC characters are kinda annoying and I wish that they paced out their releases better to have a 3 month wait for each character. So I get where people are coming from, but I think you are on the point that a lot of the wider FGC don't properly articulate the problems that do exist, because I feel like if people said "Why do we have these uneven wait times between content releases?" Vs. "THERE IS NO CONTENT!!!!", I would personally feel less annoyed by it lol

I also would like to add.....I play world tour/battle hub and do enjoy some of the cosmetics that comes within that, but I also everything in fighting ground as well. They need to keep it at 50/50.

The complaining on basically every video to do with SF6 has really soured me on the community and the game more than the lack of content. Can't watch a video or tourney without some airheads crying about costumes in the comments/chat. Like goddam these are the same people saying throw loops gives the game a bad image.

Exactly. This is the same dork ass shit we deal with in call of duty. Except everyone cries about optional DLCs and how broke they are...SF6 FGC community wants to give up their money and will whine like babies until they get their way...
Video gaming is so weird with the addition of social media

Remember Capcom wanted to go after the modding community which are basically doing what the people want for free. Instead of hiring them since they clearly know what they're doing. Thus cutting the development fat Capcom is acting like boomers once again and making the dev process lower than what it needs to be. They have main staffers on costumes when they should be on characters. Then Capcom is clearly split due to MonHun when that drops this is gonna happen AGAIN

I appreciate this nuanced response, I enjoy the avatar bullshit (sometimes) but I also would like more character costumes.
