  • Running the Bachmann EFE Rail/Kernow Model Railway Centre Southern "Booster" Co-Co locomotive with a reasonably appropriate train around Newton Broadway. These locomotives were also nicknamed "Hornbies", which Bachmann obviously don't wish to advertise!
I had to adjust the wheel back-to-backs on this model before it would run reliably through a couple of the points, they were all a little overwidth straight out of the box. Also, the electrical pickups on one of the bogies required some adjustment initially. Once those tasks were done, it settled down to run nicely. It was a little stiff initially on the rolling road, but loosened up well after the requisite amount of running-in.
The cab lights work with the Zimo decoder set to the 'C' specification - they can be switched from 'C' to 'D' and back again very easily to cater for logic or full-power outputs on certain auxiliaries.
As can be seen, it now runs very smoothly, quietly, and reliably.

I have memories of the Southern Region from the late 1950s and into the mid 1960s, but I never got to see the Boosters in action. You were lucky. 🙂

That's how I remember the newer class 71s as well when I was young. :-)

Yes, that seems to be the most common one in photos of these locos, so that's what I went with. They were frequently used on Newhaven boat trains.
