Carol's Coronation Song!
I used to sing this tune when I came home from secondary school.

Carol's coronation brought me here

What an extraordinary composer was Handel.

Stunning interpretation full of grandeur!.

WOW WOW!!! this piece is music- truly raises the soul.thank you all guys.
Don't say that to a Scot
@@BAGOWE I don't get your comment. What am I missing? Why would a Scot object to the comment? Not criticizing. Just baffled.
@@BAGOWE Ignore my previous question. I looked it up and agree with you. I am a Stuart. My great great grandfather was a graduate of the Royal College of Surgeons in Edinburgh.

You can see how the choir members are enjoying this performance.
At played an instrumental version at my wedding instead of “Here Comes the Bride.” Yes, I was the bride and I appeared to this.
Did anyone know that this classical music melody was later used for a Hebrew Hanukkah song called "Hava Narimah"? I thought you'd find that interesting.
Avi Greene Wow! I had no idea! And I was brought up in an orthodox Jewish family who loved classical music!!! I never even heard of the Hannukah song but just now looked it up on UA-cam and you're absolutely right! BTW I distinctly remember the first time I ever heard this melody - it was used during the last sequence in the Laurel And Hardy classic A Chump At Oxford. Well over 55 years ago when I first saw it, and I wondered what the music was from, since it differed so completely from the rest of the film score.
Very appropriate, since Judas Maccabaeus plays a part in both
+EPSTEINISMS # I knew that but thanks for the reminder!
Christians have also adapted the melody for the Easter song "Thine Be The Glory" (in case anyone didn't know).
In Germany it's also a christmas carol called "Tochter Zion"
Long live Carol-Chan
Thank you for posting
Handle, Bach, Mozart et al, dead for centuries yet their music still lives on.
The music of today will be in the gutter tomorrow.
I Thank THE LORD for giving us these great masters of music and the wonderful people who sing and the musicians who play the works of the great masters.
A very Merry Christmas to one and all and May 2019 Be peaceful and wonderful.
God Bless you one and all, with a special blessing to the men and women, our Veterans, past, present, future and their families for protecting the USA!

Outstanding. Makes me want to rush of to Waterloo, for some reason.
Every time I watch this, I get goosebumps.

Written by Handel to celebrate the Duke of Cumberlands victory at Culloden.
:( Butcher Cumberland!
*Jacobites BTFO'd*
stinking Billie
I always liked the Duke. He took a genuine interest in the welfare of his men and knew how to get the best from them. After dueling De Sax at Fontenoy it was a fairly trivial matter to squash “that cowardly Italian” and his followers at Culloden. An outstanding victory by any measure.
it's become the Festival of The Rededication Oratorio (Hanukah in Hebrew)... We have it playing softly in the background as we rise from our dinner and retreat to the living room to behold the candles (a collection of menorah) and distribute deep blue and silver wrapped gifts to the children, while the hearth crackles and the little ones play with their treasures..... Hanukah begins with the redeeming of Jerusalem by Judas Maccabeus and the Miracle of the steadfast lights... A Blessed Season of Miracles to all
If everyone know Handel's secret for making the simplest of melodies that's also a divine glimpse of heavens' angels the world would be so much better. Love to all from Jerusalem.
telemachus53 I concur but the apostrophe should be placed after the ..n..otherwise,how many heavens do you have?
Love from Canada to Jerusalem. I've just purchased a Rosary from Jerusalem.
Hopefully one day soon people can gather again to unite their voices together and create beautiful things like this!
Beautiful! Love this at Easter time.
The music was used for the french hymn A toi la gloire, which is an Easter song, but is not sung only for Easter.
Rührend zu sehen, mit welcher Freude und Hingabe die Leute singen.
Me encanta esta canción, la mejor versión en mi humilde apertura.
Very well sung indeed - also the English pronunciation of the text was very good... What a good tune it is!! A good solid German tune, but adapted for British taste, as Handel did of course live in Britain after his German boss became the King of England.
@Sir Winston Churchil Did you not know that Handel was German? did you not know that he was court composer to the Elector of Hannover who became George I ? the first of the Hanoverian dynasty, of which his descendant is now Queen Elizabeth II ? Handel's music is very German in style, but wrote in English of course. Interesting fact...... his house in Mayfair (posh central London) is the house that Jimmy Hendrix lived in? how's that for spooky!! Still there today.
What joy on the face on the face of the lady in the asymetric dress. How this should be sung.
Thank you all guys beautiful every time.❤❤
Me and my band at school learned how to play this on instrument

Beethoven thought that Handel was the greatest composer of all time!
Beethoven was right.
Mike Fuller In point of fact, I think that it was Beethoven who said of Handel "He was the father of us all."
''Händel ist der größte Komponist, der je lebte. Ich würde meine Kopfbedeckung abnehmen und auf seinem Grab knien''.(Händel is the greatest composer that ever lived. I would uncover my head and kneel on his grave.)
Beethoven, speaking to J. A. Stumpff in the autumn of 1823. en.wikiquote.org/wiki/George_Frideric_Handel
He also that about JS Bach. I guess it's possible to have two greatest.
Bach allways felt admiration for Handel, Telleman, and Vivaldi. Bach also loved the chorales of Palestrina from the XVI century. Beethoven used to say about bach the he was the god of armony. Musicians say many thing about other great musicians.

See, the conqu'ring hero comes!
Sound the trumpets! Beat the drums!
Sports prepare! The laurel bring!
Songs of triumph to him sing!

See the godlike youth advance!
Breathe the flutes and lead the dance!
Myrtle wreaths and roses twine
to deck the hero's brow divine!

'Tis a shame that this beautiful composition is connected to Cumberland's butchery of the Scots and the follow-up campaign of near genocidal attempts to wipe out any shred of Scottish pride. Thankfully this didn't last and Cumberland was forced to relinquish his claim on the throne; much to the benefit of the British North Americans who had enough of a struggle with their War of Independence against George III and Parliament.
Thank you so much for posting the lyrics! Wonderful.
THIS IS SOME SERIOUS RAP HERE !!!....
Thank you 🙏
Beethoven said that Handel was "The greatest composer who had ever lived!"
Indeed he did, and I am very pleased you mentioned this.

I don't know but I think I may have read it on the notes for a CD of Beethoven's 'Missa Solemnis', I certainly read that Beethoven wrote out Handel's 'Messiah; as an exercise at the time that Beethoven wrote his 'Missa Solemnis'.
Tadaima..
Learning the cello part of this music at this exact moment :D
very beautiful!
this is the POWER of voice
This is beautiful. Handel is a boss
Any fans of Waterloo (1970)? (And Duke of Wellington?)
Was delighted to hear it on his entrance
total carol supremacy
so beautiful!
THE GRAND HANDEL AT HIS MOST GLORIOUS !!!....MAGNIFICENT POSTING !!!....
that means transcendent in a spiritual, Godly sense. the oratorio bears witness to the holy restoration of God's Temple in Jerusalem in the second century BCE.
Quite SUPERB, Actually.....
Que beleza !!!!
The size of the choir and orchestra!
Wonderful, it lifts the heart - amazing what power the human voice and music can have

Beautifully pleasing
How is this version not included in the Last Night set is beyond me !!!
It is. But only instrumental. It introduces the singer who has to sing Rule Britannia, in the last night of the Proms. The public don't sing (it is impossible, the real tune is sung by choir , after by solists) , they whistle.
Alas for Scotland. This written by Handel to celebrate General Wade’s victory over the Scots in the ‘45.
I adore Händel's music.
For the Duke of Cumberland after the Battle of Culloden! God Save the King!

How long did applause go on!!!!!😆
Best song for graduation
Used in a favourite Scottish Hymn. Shame most don't know it was written in honour of the Duke of Cumberland who'd just defeated their ancestors!!
Thankfully, not every Scot was on the Jacobite side.
Interesting that this tune is a german christmas song. Lyrics written in 1820 as "Tochter Zion, freue dich".
Händels music comes home again!
It is not a Christmas Hymn, but an Advent Hymn usually for the 3rd and 4th
Sunday. Traditionally it, and the two immediate Hymns before in the
Hymnary, actually belong to Palmsunday as it celebrates Christ’s
entry into Jerusalem (Zion), but were later moved to Advent.
You *do* realize that this oratorio was written, meaning the music, in *1746*? Or that 'Tochter Zion, freue dich' is a translation of the English hymn 'Thine be the Glory', which is literally this piece of music, taken from the oratorio, and put to new lyrics, almost 60 years later.
MrMay94 yes having been born German I remember my Grandmother singing it to me as a child at Cristmas time.
English as a second language perhaps? Might MrMay94 have meant to write something like, "A German song written in 1820 used this tune. Handel's music comes home again." That would be an passable comment, timewise. We could have a separate discussion as to why Handel left Germany & made his home in England.
Wow! bravo!
Marvellous! Australia.

Handel also promoted it in cities with somewhat secure Jewish populations at the same time he promoted it to the British. It has been The Hanukah Oratorio among The Faithful since its beginning.
FYI- This beautiful music is played during the coronation scene in the famous 1937 film "The Prisoner of Zenda" starring Ronald Colman, Raymond Massey and Madaliene Carroll.
Those wild wild days, long gone, singing in a choir -
...sound the crumpets
eat the crumbs...
Food for the soul
I like that everyone here thinks it's a hymn about God and a peaceful song. Google the song first.
Of topic, but: Why did Handel get rid of his chickens?
They kept saying, "Bach, Bach"
Elevemos a alma.
This is pretty close to how I'd expect HWV 63 Nr. 58 to sound as composed - originally written for an oratorio, it was adapted for military ceremonial use. As I see things, British Broadcasting could use a more suitable version hereof for closing night of the annual Sir Henry Joseph Wood Promenade Concerts, as this _really_ needs a choir of some sort to parallel the presentation from _Judas Maccabeus_.
