Something that stood out to me: after Elle's Warner-revelation in Chip On My Shoulder, the Greek chorus rotated around so that Kate (the classically smart, responsible Delta Nu sister that helped Elle study) was front and center. She'd appeared with the larger Greek chorus before in their first appearance, but primarily in the back row. I see this as a representation of Elle's priorities in her mind, refocusing on her responsibilities as a student.
So the phrase "chip on your shoulder" actually comes from young boys in the 1800s literally putting wood chips on their shoulders, which was an implicit dare to others to try to knock it off. The connotation is that you're expecting others (or just life) to go after you and try to knock you down.
Plus, the young boys would then physically fight or duel the person who knocked the chip off their shoulder. It means spoiling for a fight literally or figuratively.
"I'm just happy I could be there", "guess you never can tell", Emmet openly, though not explicitly saying: "Man, she is different than what I thought. Look at her go!!!" Not to mention him doing so "in private". He is celebrating her success as hers instead of any attempt at making it about /him/. Sure he'd told her to be more driven, but she's the one who put in the work and changed her habits, in turn redfining his definition of her for this 3rd (and 4th) rendition of "Woods comma Elle."
"I'm getting some vibes" BEST BROADWAY COUPLE, I cannot with Elle and Emmett. Also brilliant choice for the line to point out on Christian, I was concerned Casper wouldn't catch on because like y'all pointed out Emmett and Vox really don't sound all that similar but that really was the perfect moment. Every time I watch this show I get so hyped up for Chip on Your Shoulder and it really does feel like a showstopper number...then the show keeps going and just gets 'so much better', lol.
Fun fact: Laura Bell Bundy did this recording of the show while sick! it's "most noticeable" during the final high note in So Much Better since she usually doesn't cut it like she did here, she goes through it beginning to end and I think that's crazy
Mortius mouthing and dancing along is SO REAL. When it’s not polite to sing along but you LOVE the song!!! The shoulder shimmy with the little piano trill… SO REAL!!!!
I can’t say I’ve listened to every musical, or even a lot, but this will forever be my favorite. This musical ACTUALLY BUILDS ON THE MOVIE. It’s not 1:1 with some fluff, any weak points the movie had were improved by the musical! Most movie to musicals are kinda ehhhhhh, but NOT legally blonde. It improves the messaging of the movie, improves the weak points of the story, and makes it DAMN catchy.
43:52 I believe there's a recording on youtube of this exact scene in which the kick was so strong Laura's heel fell out towards the audience 😭 I figured I'd point it out
if i recall correctly, it was during the out-of-town tryouts (pre-broadway trial production) in san francisco. you can definitely find that clip somewhere on here, it's hilarious!
Yep, it was in the San Francisco tryouts. The whole clip of this song can be found on youtube. After the first shoe flew off, she quickly took of the other one and threw it offstage to keep her balance, then the jump she did at the end of the song was REALLY high. Apparently there was also one instance where her wig fell off during Positive and she just laughed and said "So much for being legally blonde". Iconic.
I adore English idiom meanings, because you get weird history and culture. "Chip on your shoulder" is one of these, and its origins tie into the "lawyer" theme of the show. To start, America has always been litigious (i.e., we will sue for ANY reason). Legally, if you started a fight, the person you hit could sue you. So in the 1800s, boys and young men who wanted to fight but didn't want a lawsuit would instead issue a dare. They would place a wood chip on their shoulder, go up to the guy they want to fight, and dare him to knock it off. If they other guy took the challenge and tried to slap off the wood chip, any physical altercation to follow was no longer the chip-bearer's fault. What could have been a lawsuit for "assault and battery" is now either "horseplay" (legally defined as: "rough, rowdy, or boisterous play that is consensual and done for amusement or entertainment of all involved parties") or even seen as "self-defense" if the fight gets really nasty. A chip on your shoulder meant you were ready to fight. Basically, it's the OG "Come at me, bro!" Most importantly for the tie-in to "Legally Blonde," it was a legal loophole. Figuratively, it came to mean any drive to fight against an antagonistic force, be it a person who makes you angry or a hard situation. Over almost 200 years, the meaning changed, and it became a BAD thing, a feeling of bitterness or a jaded outlook. Here, Emmett embraces the original meaning. He really is angry at how unfair life is, that those of us born into poverty must fight twice as hard as the nepo baby whose daddy is paying for everything. He has placed that "chip" on his shoulder, and he's daring life to knock him down. He's ready to fight. He has placed that chip on his shoulder, declared "come at me, bro" to the world, and he's winning his fight.
So yeah, it's already mentioned that Laura belle Bundy was sick during the recording of this show, but since you guys mentioned the heels... There is actually a clip on you tube, when Elle does her kick, her shoes FLIES out into the audience and the look on Laura's face, the cheeky grin of embarrassment but carrying on like the consummate professional that she is, is just ABSOLUTELY BRILLIANT AND SO SWEET. I ABSOLUTELY LOVE HER!
These two songs are real show stopping numbers (a real showstopper🎶) I cannot wait for Casper's reaction to Whipped into Shape! I find that song genuinely impressive because of the choreography 😭💖
Don't forget all the choreography during Bend And Snap and Legally Blonde Remix. Those two songs are also mind-blowing in how insane the choreography is.
Emmett is definitely Callahan's TA, but does that necessarily imply he's still a student? I mean he says "I got through law school by busting my ass", so... he graduated already. I assumed he was one of the previous people to get an internship with Callahan and now works under him at his practice, which includes helping him with the Harvard lectures.
My understanding is that Emmett is probably either an L3 that is basically done but needs to pass the bar exam or he is a junior associate in Callahan’s law firm doing the TA to help boost his odds of getting promoted to partner. Correction: he’s probably a law clerk, which is the equivalent of a hospital intern or a postdoc. Basically, the entry level job for someone with their law degree that isn’t even on the track to become partner the way associate is.
@@elsie8757 actually, since Callahan mentions the possibility of promoting Emmett to Associate, he is probably a Law Clerk. That is the most entry-level position at a law firm for someone who is either currently studying law or a newly graduated lawyer. A Law Clerk typically has passed or is actively studying for their bar exam. It’s the same level career level as a Medical Intern at a hospital. They have graduated from the law/medical school and are fully licensed to practice, but they are so inexperienced that there is no way anyone would trust them on their own yet and instead assist far more experienced practitioners with mundane, routine tasks. Law Clerks typically assist partners or even associates with researching cases and filing legal documents, etc.
There's a story that Laura began drinking tons of Redbull during her stint on the show to keep up her energy and it was worked into the show as the "IT GIVES ME ENERGY!!" line. Debatable how true it is, but it is hilarious nonetheless.
I just wanna say that after 23 years, and a linguistics degree... I finally undertood the concept of "Chip on your shoulder" so thank you Mortius, you have taught me more than my college classes
oh my god i literally never noticed this before but when elle raises her hand in chip on my shoulder (exactly 24:11 in the video) you can faintly hear the piano for the first verse of so much better!
So much better is such a high energy song. And ending each phrase on "beh-tah" is such a hard word to blast into the audience. Such a tough and good song.
Laura was just recovering from been sick in this recording ...you can kinda tell in them last couple notes if you have seen/heard her perform it before...but she still kills it and blows you away...which is wild to me with her been on the tail end of been sick with a bad cold
i see this in my falsettos obsession!!! yes absolutely, i love the complete contrast between emmett and marvin and it would be cool to see them react to that, christian borle is an amazing actor. i also LOVE andrew rannells and stephanie j block in falsettos!! such a fun yet heartwrenching musical it affects me physically lmao
Also fun fact when they get Rufus back and Paulette is holding him, in a bootleg version the dog sneezes right into her face and they all break and laugh 😂
Omg I keep remembering things as I watch but at the end of so much better when she is at the front of the stage and she kicks out, in one performance that someone filmed for a bootleg again lol her shoe FLEW OFF and into the audience 😂
Having a “chip on your shoulder” means that you are looking for a fight either literally or metaphorically. It is also used to mean that someone has a grievance or grudge and is looking for an excuse to act out on it. So someone desperate to prove themselves might have a chip on their shoulder from being constantly mocked or looked down on. The aggressiveness is a side-effect of the existing anger, grievance, or grudge at play.
I dont think emmit is still a student because later on he says that he is Bar-ed. You wont have taken the bar as a student, right? I always thought he just worked for cahalan's firm.
In the Harvard Variations, when Emmett’s introduced, he says he was Class of 05. I’ve always assumed that, being an alumni of the law school who works for a Boston law firm headed by a lawyer who teaches at the school, he either was doing this as a side job and/or to get in good with his boss. It might be working - Callahan just said associate is on the table.
Casper mentioned the soundscape was similar to heathers and I’m pretty sure both shows (as well as others, like bat boy) have the same composers, so, good catch!
I just want to say that you guys seem to be under the impression that a “showstopper” refers to the Act I finale of a musical (maybe I’m wrong, in which case I apologize, but you keep referring to “the” showstopper and it seems like you’re talking about the act I closer?) and that’s not actually what that term means. A showstopper refers to a song that gets a big/long enough reaction from the audience that there’s a pause to accommodate the applause, and there can be multiple songs that are considered showstoppers in one show. One example I hear a lot is “The Room Where it Happens” from Hamilton, which is in the middle of Act II but is widely considered a showstopper. “I’m Here” from the Colour Purple is another one, and that’s also from Act II, near the end but not the final song and definitely not the Act I finale
Also, an Act I finale isn’t automatically a showstopper! Since the show pauses anyway, the pause isn’t caused by audience applause, so being the Act I finisher doesn’t automatically mean a song is considered a showstopper, although of course most shows put really strong numbers as the Act I finale so plenty of them are considered showstoppers anyway. Basically calling a song a showstopper is mostly a way of saying it’s a very good, very popular song from a musical, but it can be placed anywhere in either act
I thought the voice actor y’all were talking about was Leslie Kritzer (Serena) because she voices Rosie in Hazbin. Except now I realize Kritzer left right before they recorded the TV airing… 😅
Love the reaction videos to these incredible MUSICALS!!!! The guy singing in "Chip on my Shoulder"; his voice reminded me of the character JD and for a second I thought, 'what-if JD became a Lawyer instead' 😂.
While Chip on Your Shoulder feels like a show-stopper in terms of power, it's far too focused on moving the story forward. So Much Better and the dance break in What You Want ACTUALLY stop the show Love really is a true leitmotif in this show. The melody itself never changes much but it so clearly represents a change in the idea it represents. It's SO GOOD.
This is my favourite musical too and I'm so happy to see Casper like it so much! ❤ And I love how many details you point out so even though I've seen this recording specifically so often, you still show me new things. You're both amazing!
One thing I absolutely love is also how a little shift that might not have gotten much attention is how Elle is with her other classmates. Because at the party, that was like one song ago. Elle was largely the joke, and the people who checked the list probably didn't even pay attention to any of the names other than "is my name on there". Then she approaches Warner, and brings up their past, and suddenly the rest of the class, or at least the guys, go back to check again, and they're kinda celebrating with her/hyping her up. She openly mocks him having gotten the wrong image of her, and their classmates are /agreeing/. It also further showes her shift from focusing on "love" and Warner as she instead engages with the rest of the class and gets them hyped for her, some of the guys even explicitly acting @ Warner to highlight all her digs. Then after Warner is the one to scamper off with his tail between his legs (taking Vivian along), Elle barely spares them a glance before looking to her classmates while gesturing like "look at thata/can you believe that guy?" I just love how it's a subtle way of showing how she's not only getting Emmet and Callaghan to see her differently, the rest of their class is also seeing her growth and /nobody/ is seen questioning her getting one of the coveted internships.
Something I feel might get lost as an additional point about "what rich, romantic planet are you from?" about going to Harvard (or any uni/college) in America that some people might not be familiar with: You have to pay an application fee. Which I think was 100$. That's just to send in your application regardless of if they accept you or not. And then all the other costs come in addition. Meaning that any high-level or otherwise desirable schools gets who knows even how much money paid into them by people who end uo getting told "no".
So I came here from Mortius' channel after watching his first Twisted reaction video and has expected them to have finished watching legally blonde already (the Hazbin hotel callout should've told me otherwise) BUT OH YOU GUYS HAVEN'T POSTED THE FULL THING SO NOW I GOT THINGS TO LOOK FORWARD TOOO
so much love for these songs. If yall are looking for new musicals, I wonder if "Into the Woods would fit into your style of content. its fantastic as to be expected of Sondheim, but the music is interspersed everywhere so how you would go about cutting it up into episodes may be a challenge.
7:30 regarding the comment to heathers: they're actually composed by the same people!! there's even a reference to legally blonde in freeze your brain "you're planning your future, Veronica Sawyer, you'll go to some college, and marry a lawyer" also in regards to 34:54 : I rather than saying a shift in priority from love to law, i like to think the return of the motif is too show that Elle is falling in love with law
in portuguese, we have a expression "stone in the shoe" to represent the chip on your shoulder. Something that is annoying constantly, and make the way you act different
yessss been so excited for this one!! absolute killers back to back! i love how we see elle's perspective change and her confidence in herself & her abilities grow here and she realizes what she wants to focus on. the rest of the musical is amazing (the whole musical in general, of course) and i'm looking forward to the reactions!
ADAM RUPP BAHAHAH I GENUINELY LAUGHED SO HARD OMG 😂😂 best part by far! Also chip on my shoulder is my favourite song from act 1 as well!!! Loving these reactions ❤❤🔥
I really hope that at some point you guys react to Falsettos because I absolutely adore the musical and think that you would both really enjoy it and make some great take aways from it
I agree that Thunder Bringer would be a great Act 1 finisher for EPIC and Act 2 starts with Legendary, but I also really like the contrast between Monster and Suffering. While I think both pairs of songs could be the showstopper and starter, I don’t think Monster and Suffering could exist only in act 2 while Thunder Bringer and Legendary can.
Does showstopper mean act one closer? I have never heard it used in that way. I thought it meant a song that gets such a big applause that it interrupts the show / the actors cannot continue immediately. (So Much Better is a showstopper both ways lol)
There is an alternative version to so much better that I actually prefer more than what we actually got. I just like the lyrics a lot better but both versions of the song are amazing. I'll leave the link down below for those who are curious. ua-cam.com/video/OuIHWMegYnA/v-deo.htmlsi=ulMKLYN9SA-Zlz9_
I think i have to disagree with casper, for me the shift in priority occurs in chip on my shoulder with the line " i'm reclaiming my pride." They could have easily had the line be reclaiming my prize ie. Warner/love but instead she focuses on herself. I think the part 'was that law' is her finding a new and more fulfilling type of love .
I feel like mortius has been spoiling alot more for casper recently which is kinda making me sad, since now casper will be expecting something bad to happen and we don’t get to see his reaction rawly
Can we not support bad people?? Like i get it you like hazbin but Vivienne is NOT a good person. For the sake of the people in your audience who HAVE been affected by her shitting actions, can we not? Can we not give bad people more clout? Or is this too much to ask for ?
Casper is so intuitive that this is a joy to watch. It's a shame the other guy has to be so starved for attention with the singing along and flailing I have to block half of my screen to enjoy it.
We've already finished the ENTIRE MUSICAL over on Patreon! www.patreon.com/c/openarmsreactions/
Oooh good eye, I love learning new details about my faves
If we ever get a movie musical, I want Kate to be one of the girls to go see Elle win her case.

The Heathers vibes are coming from the fact Heathers & LB are co-composed by the same person - Laurence O'Keefe!
I love how So Much Better is just her roasting Werner
These are two of my favorite songs. Although there is one in the second act that is my favorite. I will not say title to not spoil anything.
The guy who plays Emmet also has a role in the TV series Smash, as one of the people writing the Musical about Marilyn Monroe
I DESPERATELY need you to react to "Ride The Cyclone" it is my favorite musical.
Emmett is Callahan’s TA and working under him. He says he “got through law school” and, in Harvard Variations, says he’s “Class of ‘05”
While Chip on Your Shoulder feels like a show-stopper in terms of power, it's far too focused on moving the story forward. So Much Better and the dance break in What You Want ACTUALLY stop the show
Love really is a true leitmotif in this show.
Chip on my shoulder ; So much better always motivates me to want to reach my goals
34:44 ooorrr is it because she's falling in love with practicing law 👀👀👀
I am loving these reactions. Legally Blonde the Musical is so underrated.
Then after Warner is the one to scamper off with his tail between his legs (taking Vivian along), Elle barely spares them a glance before looking to her classmates while gesturing like "look at thata/can you believe that guy?"
I just love how it's a subtle way of showing how she's not only getting Emmet and Callaghan to see her differently, the rest of their class is also seeing her growth and /nobody/ is seen questioning her getting one of the coveted internships.
7:56 If fairly certain he is already lisenced and is just working under calihan (he mentions it around the end of act 2 but i could be wrong)
So I came here from Mortius' channel after watching his first Twisted reaction video and has expected them to have finished watching legally blonde already (the Hazbin hotel callout should've told me otherwise)
BUT OH YOU GUYS HAVEN'T POSTED THE FULL THING SO NOW I GOT THINGS TO LOOK FORWARD TOOO
I discovered Borle through Smash.
so much love for these songs.
If yall are looking for new musicals, I wonder if "Into the Woods would fit into your style of content. its fantastic as to be expected of Sondheim, but the music is interspersed everywhere so how you would go about cutting it up into episodes may be a challenge.
28:47 No… no no. Monster needs to be the Act One finale.
7:30 regarding the comment to heathers: they're actually composed by the same people!! there's even a reference to legally blonde in freeze your brain "you're planning your future, Veronica Sawyer, you'll go to some college, and marry a lawyer"
also in regards to 34:54 :
I rather than saying a shift in priority from love to law, i like to think the return of the motif is too show that Elle is falling in love with law
This, Danny motta and hellavu boss are the trinity of UA-cam uploaded today
I think you guys should react to Falsettos👀💜
in portuguese, we have a expression "stone in the shoe" to represent the chip on your shoulder.
Okay I love legally blonde- but I love how much you guys talked about heathers.
I really hope that at some point you guys react to Falsettos because I absolutely adore the musical and think that you would both really enjoy it and make some great take aways from it
Those songs are so much fun!
And somehow your reactions make an already amazing show even more awesome
This musical is just a good time. Super looking forward to act 2!! Especially Legally Blonde (the song haha)
May I recommend listening to Mean Girls musical. The songs SLAP and there are some AMAZING animatics for it too!!!🥳🥰🎆💕
Seconding!
Yall should react to the outsiders musical!!!! It’s SO good
15:22 FALSETTOS MENTION
I like this musical better than Hamilton
Not Adam Rupp’s catching strays 💀
XDDDD LOOOOOOL XD So good xD
Adam Rupp LOL!!!
Morbius PLEASE do a cover of Chip on Your Shoulder!!
Does showstopper mean act one closer? I have never heard it used in that way. I thought it meant a song that gets such a big applause that it interrupts the show / the actors cannot continue immediately. (So Much Better is a showstopper both ways lol)
Pretty sure Emmett's like a Paralegal in Calahan's firm
You putting Marvin on screen for a couple seconds means y'all HAVE to watch Falsettos PLEASE 😭
There is an alternative version to so much better that I actually prefer more than what we actually got. I just like the lyrics a lot better but both versions of the song are amazing. I'll leave the link down below for those who are curious.

Close. Adam isn't in THIS show.
Can we not support bad people?? Like i get it you like hazbin but Vivienne is NOT a good person. For the sake of the people in your audience who HAVE been affected by her shitting actions, can we not? Can we not give bad people more clout? Or is this too much to ask for ?
Wdym??
Casper is so intuitive that this is a joy to watch. It's a shame the other guy has to be so starved for attention with the singing along and flailing I have to block half of my screen to enjoy it.
He's just enjoying the music let him be 😭😭
