The Porsche 917k is the car that got me into endurance racing . when i first saw it in the Le Mans movie from 1971 i instantly fell in love with it and endurance. i have a jw gulf Porsche replica jacket from the movie and i drive this car on Project Cars 2 every day. if it hadn't been for this car and movie i probably wouldn't know what Le Mans is. ive watched that movie hundreds of times. im getting an h pattern shifter and a new wheel for my PS4 for christmas so im going to be as close to driving it as i will ever get.
Unlike most flat-twin, flat-four and flat-six engines, flat-twelve engines typically use the crankshaft configuration of a 180° V engine instead of a boxer engine. Therefore most flat-twelve engines have each pair of pistons sharing a crankpin, instead of the boxer design of each piston having its own crankpin.
Interesting story; when JD went to his local Beverly Hills Porsche dealer to buy a 550 A Porsche would not approve the sale as they said he was too inexperienced. So JD hired a certified Porsche Mechanic and he told Porsche he would watch after young James when he drove the car, so Porsche relented and sold him one. Obviously Porsche was right to be concerned as young James killed himself and said Mechanic on a nearly empty public highway in the desert on his first road trip to drive the car to a local race, I believe in Barstow.
Just watched that Steve McQueen movie. Really cool stuff. I had a toy car in the very early 70's with Gulf livery. I am not sure if it was a GT40 or a 917. Either way, I bet it would be worth something today. Metal with working lights. I would kill to learn what happened to it.

The 917 had an air cooled flat 12 of 4.5 litres capacity. Basic engine design was similar to the 911, having individual cylinder heads (12 instead of 6 on 911 engines) bolted to the side of the engine block so that the connecting rods and pistons on either side of the block moved horizontally opposing eachother. The Ferrari 512s had a water cooled V12 of 60° angle and capacity of 5 litres.
180° v12 is diffrent from a flat 12. They may look the same but are mechanically diffrent .so they are right its a v12, besides who do you think knows more about the engine? You or the company who made it

I cannot agree more; the 917 KH is the greatest Porsche of all times...! Now (July 14th, 2021), I think we're few weeks from a new Sotheby's auction, in which an original Porsche 917 KH is about to be sold, for a price list of... 18.5 million US Dollars!!! 😳😳😳
Surrounded by spectacular million dollar Porsches and the host is wearing a suit that looks like it has been slept in. Also, the 917 had a flat, horizontally opposed engine, just like a 911, VW Beetle, Subaru etc. It wasn't a Vee engine at all, as this refers to the cylinder layout which is obviously flat with two rows of six cylinders directly opposite each other. The connecting rod pin arrangement on the crankshaft doesn't change the cylinder configuration. There have been many Vee engines that have used a variety of con rod pin positionings and they're still considered Vee engines, as the cylinders form a vee shape, regardless of the crankshaft used.

Wrong, @@the911collection. There are two types of flat 12s; boxers and 180° Vs. Ah yes, the debate on flat or H12 vs 180* V12. This being Porsche's channel, it was nice to hear it referred to as a V12.
It confirms it is a V12 then. I've always thought it was a flat-12. Guess I was wrong.
On a contrary, the Ferrari 512 was actually the one with boxer 12
HO ... horizontally opposed... or a flat 12. The 917 does not, nor ever had a v12.
