This is my favorite scene of the movie. Miriam Colon is a great actress and her performance as Scarface's mother is powerful. She summarizes the whole movie in one scene.
Totally agree with you ..her name was Miriam Colon and she passed away in 2017 but yes.. She should have gotten at lease an Academy Award Nomination for Best Supporting Actress in my opinion
. Best Supporting Actress the oscar nominees that year Linda Hunt - The Year of Living Dangerously Cher - Silkwood Glenn Close - The Big Chill Amy Irving - Yentl Alfre Woodard - Cross Creek .
Supertrump 2000 there's no courage in what he did. There is no respect in what he did, if your son or daughter turned out like Tony, you would understsnd what she is saying.
The way she told tony the backbone and integrity courage you can tell it wasnt talk. The same way Tony stood up to Souza the same way when facing a chainsaw, he made his decisions but he was his mothers child no doubt. He could have been in the drug world and had no principals no loyalty or courage he would not have made it as far as he did but he could have been like almost all the rest but that isnt Tony.
That lady is an underrated actress. She was so great in this scene, it is overlooked by many. Thank you for posting this video. This was a great scene.
That's a real mom outh there. Thats the realest person with true balls n heart in the whole movie. Mother with some real balls , very sane and strong hearted one. The world be better if we had more mothers like her. Bless her for her courage n honesty.
His mom had huge balls. Her balls were large and sweaty. The way she yelled at tony showed just how huge her testicles really were. Large shiny balls. Balls that demand respect. Latina mom balls. Hard working anti criminal balls. Balls that put other balls to shame. Balls so large they cant be measured. Balls that occasionally itch. Balls that intimidate everyone that sees them. Balls that just don't quit.
@@Lkenmaner you are too shortsighted to properly understand this scene here, the fact is that she didn't failed her children, they failed her and that's the narrative. +Danny O'Donnald I'd rather do what's right and earn an honest living. Tony got what he deserved, he was a psycopathic killer who murdered his best friend in a fit of rage and got his sister killed as well.
One of thing I admire about Tony's character was that no matter how hard the truths his mother was hurling at him, Tony not once ever said or did anything back to disrespect or harm his mother. And that spoke massive volume to the level of respect he had for her and her words. She even called him a bum and he took the shaming like a real man.
@@CheerfullyCynical829 Not saying word while being shamed is the ultimate honor you can give and authorative figure. Not only doesn’t Tony talk back to his mom, deep down, he knows, she’s right about everything. Despite that, Tony loves his mom, and wants to give her some money
😂 like dang and still called him a bum. Tony was pissed at the world and himself when he didn’t get his mother approval. When she saw him as a monster. He accepted it. Unfortunately I feel both sides. Tony and his mother. Be hard on your children but also say I love you. Or else all they ever hear is you yelling. Even if it was for the best intentions. Mother played a role in the downfall. Every scene she is yelling at Tony. The more I watch Scarface the deeper the film really is. It was all love though.
@@theblackmoth1111he was too far gone. She already said he was robbing bodegas (like a Spanish corner/ mini grocery) in Cuba. It is obvious he was dealing coke as well and went to jail. He didn't get that scar collecting donations for the food bank. She could've scolded him nicer maybe but at that point she would just be enabling him. She wanted him gone from Gina to give her a fair shot at an honest life. Gina wasn't mature/wise enough to see Tony and his crowd for what they were and you see how that went. It's just a movie we can speculate but I'm on team Mama.
I only discovered this movie through being a hip hop fan. So many rappers idolize Tony Montana, Sosa, and the lifestyles they led. So when I watched the movie I was surprised, because it seems they all completely missed the point. Tony Montana isn't just some badass kingpin/overlord guy that towers over everyone and everything in his way. He is a deeply flawed man who made some good deals, had a ton of luck, and in the end completely lost his sanity and lost all that he cared about. He wasn't ultimately portrayed as powerful, but as a mentally weak man who put on a facade of being powerful
Yeah great points. While I enjoy Scarface, a lot of these rappers who idolize the film seem to miss that Tony's rise to power ultimately leaves him with nothing.
They admire his tenacity and the story of an underdog getting everything we all dream of starting from nothing. Being fearless and taking your destiny into your own hands
growing upin miami and within latin culture , i personally grew up dominican/colombian but i grew around lots of hispanics primarily cuban , puerto ricans, and other dominicans watching this whole movie man, the creators of this movie hit everything so on the nail seriously even to the smallest details of slang ,pronunciation and mannerism of both latin and miami culture its incredible ...especially this scene she would the cliche latin mother of being so morally proud and fearless omg ...i see my mom and grandmother all over this ....she would have said the same things ..they really were right on the money with these scenes
Mother's like this are rare to find now adays, now adays we have mother's who doesn't care where their sons and daughters get the money provided they get their cut
Her, Elvira and Sosa are the only real characters that survive. Mama was a good person. Elvira smartened up. And Sosa was untouchable. We can debate if the feds ended up nabbing Sosa later on since the hit didn't go right. Like most any movie especially older movies crime never pays the meek endure while the corrupt perish.
Maybe the only woman that had morals and standards. Singularly unimpressed at the sight of drug cash. At least she tried to protect the daughter. Brother and sister were kind of the same anyways.
Toni's mama was about the only straight arrow in the movie... I always picture her alone in the house watching the television alone seeing the news of what went down at her son's house, grabbing a blanket with red eyes from crying.
Wish the whole scene was uploaded. This is how a real Latina mother reacts. At first silent, just watching the interaction. Then carefully will interact, then when she's had enough of the bullshit she will explode. She will have her say, and you better listen carefully because she means it. Don't ever cross her when it comes to defending the purity of her children when she wants to keep them away from the already corrupted ones. I totally love how she blocks her daughter, my mother did that to me once. I never dared to pass because I knew what would happen if I did.
Nothing Latina about this mother. OK maybe she is partially, but she clearly, by the accent and her personality, is a white-wannabe. Again you're probably hearing Latin English accents in your mind. Clearly this woman sounds like Frank Lopez from "Scarface." "I don't-a-come to this-a-country" is what I'm hearing in her English accent not freaking "STOP IT BRO! I'M LATINA BRO!" (that English accents), no. Cubans are white with those Frank Lopez English accents. So no... -ez surnames sound like Frank Lopez from "Scarface." This is how white moms who are racist bitches and abusive tend to act. I know cause that lady is every white racist and white-wannabe bitch I've known, same English accent everything Spaniard does not mean Hispanic, moron
The woman who played the mother in this scene was excellent, sometimes the supporting actors/character actors to me don't get enough credit and respect. She stole this scene.
Everything that made Tony great came from his mother, clearly. This is where he got his balls and his honesty. Not really fair to call him a bum tho. He also works for his living and a dangerous job too. In fact, he was just too ambitious.
No everybody is missing the point she is a good mother i say the best yea he earns money but not in the right way. She wants him to go get an honest job go to college. Be a good man She's absolutely right latinos did not risk thier lives coming to America so thier children can end up doing this. It's shameful. She's tough and mean because she wants the best for him and Gina. Yes i love that she said it's people like you that give people like us a bad name. That is soooooooo TRUE!
Rodislav Canev "This is where he got his balls and his honesty" No criminal can be an "honest man". As for his "balls"it would have been better if he got his mother's dignity, sense and clean mind. "Not really fair to call him a bum tho" In Cuba he was. He was one on the USA too until he started earning bucks in the illegal drug trade. Makes him a rich bum rather than a poor bum. "He also works for his living " No he does *not* . An illegal trade doesn't qualify as "working for a living" - that's for honest and legal jobs. "and a dangerous job too" It's NOT a job. Nobody forced him to get involved in criminal activities. The bottom line is he deserves no praise for that as if he were a fire fighter running into burning buildings to save trapped people. *That'* is a dangerous job. "In fact, he was just too ambitious." No, the word you're looking for is too GREEDY. Like any greedy man he wanted it all. "Everything that made Tony great came from his mother" Except for her honesty, principled and legal way of life and morals. Seriously. Your assessment is beyond belief.
@@jamesshunt5123 Obviously Tony is a criminal and a bad guy. The praise I give him is through tthat lens, which is upside down. If I had to give him a more objective judgement I would say the same things as you did. But Its not like romanticizing a criminals life is something surprising and shocking as you make my statements to be. During the time of Al Capone it was pretty mainstream from what I know and this movie does it too, altho only to an extent. Doesnt mean that I want people to be criminals or myself, but its interesting and emotional. True, he didnt get all the great things from his mom. He was still a broken man. But there were great things about him and they came from his mom, so my statement still stands. I didnt mean "honest" in a general sense you seem to focus on - like he is a pillar of society or something - synonym for fair. Im talking about raw honesty - being true to what you are and not hide it from everyone. Obviously Tony lies, but he tells the truth even when he lies. He has the guts to be what he wants to be. A criminal yes, but that takes guts. Not many people will have the balls to live a life like that. If even 1 % of what has happened to him during his crime carrear happened to any of us, it would fuck us in the head for life. And he was not just a regular bum, he was a top tier crime boss. He had a brand and staff and everything. He worked hard and he did it under the threat of death and jail So whatever man idgaf what you qualify as a job. Work is work, illegal or not. If you exchange your time to make profit and build an empire, yes its work. Especially if it takes a lot of effort. Would the word occupation be more suitable for your senses ffs? What would be? Criminal antroponour?Because the only difference is that its criminal. That is a big difference as far as morals are concerned, but I was speaking more about his efforts and dedication. When I hear a bum i imagine someone who does nothing all day, like a neet. I am aware now that bum is used as a pejorative for a criminal. So In that respect its true, altho a wierd description imo Obviously noone should do such work. Obviously he doest get the same prase as a fireman. Its the mirror image of that. Also, life is not black and white. If you really want to break down the criminal activity, most of the violance was towards other gang members and politicians. Killing is wrong in general, but he clearly had a moral line. He wouldnt kill innocent people. He wouldnt kill a mom and her children. He sacrificed his own life to save theirs. In that moment Tony was a hero. He didnt want his sister to be draged into his criminal life and tried to protect her innocence and he clearly loved his mother more than anything in the world, even tho she hated his guts. He isnt like the mass shooters that shoot up schools in america or something. Tony would despise evil like this and would personaly blow their brains out
@@jamesshunt5123 everything you said is opinion based and there was no facts in your comment at all. A lot of people like yourself have this FALSE belief that just because you work a job it makes you a better person than someone that may make money a non traditional way and that’s just not true and it never will be true. You say “no criminal can ever be a honest man” once again your entitled to your opinion but that’s another false statement. I grew up in the hood so i got to see the drug dealers and some were really good and honest people. I would never let someone else that has no clue what they’re talking about tell me any differently. I’ve seen these “criminals” steer kids (including me) away from the streets and force kids to stay in school and play sports. Now that’s honesty and integrity! It’s always the people that come from a privileged position or the people that just have no clue because they grew up in a sheltered environment that make these stupid statements.
This scene is just too powerful and personally emotionally gut wrenching…here is a Son who loves his Mother trying to make her life easier …and a Mother who knows what is Right and Wrong…and when time passes …love and principle just don’t align
When you think about it, Tony and his mom are very much alike under certain aspects. Both unwilling to compromise their code of honor and very perceptive about other people real motivations and character. Like his mama, Tony does not get fooled by the impression that people are doing her a favor. This scene mirrors the one with Omar, Tony and Manolo, where Manolo is all giggly about Omar’s offer of a 500 bucks for the marijuana job and Tony brushes it off as an insult - just like his mama does with him and the money he offers. When you hear Tony explaining his “word and balls” code you’d think at first he got that kind of stuff from a male figure, but it’s clear he was actually applying in his own way his mother’s philosophy. Only thing, he perverted that moral assertiveness into some bullshit gangsta code of honor who led him to destruction. The main difference is that unlike Tony, his mama couples that assertiveness with not being a sociopath.
This lady playing the mother....damn....she might be the best actress I HAVE EVER SEEN....Powerful...Sad, Principles...and she sees the darkness of her son, something that the youth of the sister couldn't see. Best actress ever!
What I enjoy about this scene is the state of the money when Tony puts it onto the table, all crumbled and wrinkled up. It’s a great way to see the comparison to his line of work as a drug dealer; a job full of lying, killing, violence, and etc.

Imagine a scene with Tony's dad...
Dad - "Do you think you can just show up after 5 years and try to buy my respect with $1000 dollars?"
Tony - "How about $2000 dollars?"
Dad - "Welcome home, son"
Latino dads are usually more critical of their children than mother's and he would probably punch Tony in the face to try to straighten him out.

That's the benefits of being blessed with a latina mother.
You got that right buddy
His mom had huge balls. Her balls were large and sweaty. The way she yelled at tony showed just how huge her testicles really were. Large shiny balls. Balls that demand respect. Latina mom balls. Hard working anti criminal balls. Balls that put other balls to shame. Balls so large they cant be measured. Balls that occasionally itch. Balls that intimidate everyone that sees them.
He never sincerely and genuinely apologized to her for being a bad son, either. That would have been the ultimate display of respect IMO.

Interestingly enough, his mother is the only fully righteous and rational person in the movie, when you think about it..

Míriam Colón puts on an acting master class in this scene. This is someone who owns her craft!

Obviously Tony is a criminal and a bad guy.
He worked hard and he did it under the threat of death and jail
So whatever man idgaf what you qualify as a job. So In that respect its true, altho a wierd description imo
Obviously noone should do such work.

Wow the mom is an amazing actress. Felt so real.
A very good Mother willing to discipline her son and refuse to accept her son as a murderer. Graceful Mother! 👍😊
