There is not one Allied tank that could withstand that weapon system. As long as the JgdPanther was facing the enemy at range... it was a deadly machine for sure. Sounds healthy as well. One day we all will be rewarded with a beautiful WWII film that will showcase some of these machines.

Germany had the best and toughest looking AFV's in the Second World War. I think the Jagdpanther had to be ONE of the most beautiful tank destroyers designed and manufactured the war.

He does, and that was the key to the "legendary drivetrain issues" a lack of experienced drivers. Yes, the drivetrain was barely strong enough for the Panthers, Tigers and derivatives, the main issue was the weak end drive. An experienced driver however could easily overcome this and in reality they hardly ever broke down in the hands of experienced crews. Lack of trained crews, parts, fuel towards the end of the war is what killed them and what stuck in the minds in the end, exagerated by post war Soviet propaganda. From downplaying the importance of the Lend Lease to insignificant for their victory and elevating the worst tank of the war 1 on 1 to legendary status. Soviets lost well over 100.000 vehicles on the eastern front, from tanks to Lend Lease Studebaker trucks, 60% of their entire t34 production. Germans lost less then 30.000 from Tiger I's to Kubelwagens.
@@gilibran That number totally out of whack. Germany threw most of its stuff to the eastern front. Even the Germans own admission by late 1944 the number was 33000 vehicles destroyed in Eastern front alone, though this is considered vastly underestimated. More realistically the number is probably ~2/3rds of their total losses during the war and Germany in total lost some ~65k tanks and SPGs, 140k half-tracks and some odd 300k cars & motorcycles. So Germans lost more tanks on the eastern front than your "all vehicles in total" value. T-34 is overhyped but nowhere near as bad as you make it to be. Early batches were rough but later ones were somewhat decent. The "bad quality" was also later on intentional - why spent time and resources to make a tank that can last 10000 hours when its average lifespan in the field is 1000h? Germans wasted a lot effort overbuilding tanks that would then get wrecked near instantly in the field.

Losses between Germany and the USSR were about the same, maybe half to 1 million more on the Soviet side. Total Soviet losses were more than 27 million; about 18 million of that total were innocent civilians murdered by the German Nazis with their ''Scorched Earth policy. Never underestimate the will and determination of Russian people. They are very misunderstand and the western Russophobia is undeserved.

I married a German girl in 1984 when I was a GI in (guess) Germany. After I got out of the Army we settled down to a normal life. Occasionally her parents came to visit us in the USA. When ever the saw and heard an American car with a bad or missing muffler they'd' say"Panzer!!" FYI panzer in German means armour in English.
Compared to other tanks, it could perform like one! Just watch some video of a modern Leopard tank, from Germany. They actually dance them, like the Low-riders do in California, with their hydraulic suspensions...Turning, spinning and bouncing, all 50 tons of it!
Two veterans who served in a Schwere Panzerjäger Abteilung told me in the nineties that they hated the Jagdpanther. "es war ein Stück Mist" is what they thought about SdKfz 173. So yeah, the Jagdpanther looks beautiful and lethal with the 8,8 cm, but i have the weakness to believe guys who actually fought in this vehicle in Normandie within s. PzJg Abt 654 and who previously fought on the eastern front in a less armoured and less well armed Panzerjäger.
I'm wondering why germans lost so much time and money trying to make tanks heavier and more powerful even in the late war? The jagdpanther was already a powerhouse. It had a weapon system who could basicaly destroy any allied tanks at pretty much any distance, even the heaviest hitters tanks like the M26 or the IS2. It's 80mm armour angled could pretty much resist almost anything at a good distance (exept perhaps the 122 D25T but it would have to be in less range than 1500m and the poor ballistic of the heavy round make it unlikely to shoot precisely beyond). So why bothering to create things like the Jagdtiger? Thing sure is even more powerful but WAYYY too heavy and overkill anyway, with way more disadvantages.
Suspension was excellent. Engine was okay; yes, not as durable as in some other tanks. Transmission was temperamental; but was basically fixed by this period. Remember, Germany on the defensive at this point; never had to travel far.
engine and suspension was never a problem with the Panther Jagdpanther...the problem was the final drive connecting the steering tansmission with the sporket wheel...designed for a 30to tank ending in a 45to tank... to make things worse some silly office penny counter clerck thougth it would be a good idea to use cheaper steel for the final drive gearing ...at the end of the war this problem was fixed and the Panther was as reliable as any ww2 tank at the end of the war... no matter if Sherman or T-34 or Comet... dont forget that ww2 tank reliablility was million miles away from today standart...the second general problem of german tanks was very low oil quality (oil was extracted from coal) and very low fuel quality (same problem based on coal) which often were the source of problems that would have never appeared with quality oil and fuel

Still if you were in Tiger 1 or 2 and could engage your target from over a mile away, then it didn't matter in those days. I suppose these jagdpanthers were mostly used in ambush anyway.
You are right, it was an ambush/defense vehicle. All AFV engines of those days were loud... what the heck, that didn't change till now. Only exception is the US M1 Abrams, but it's quiet turbine comes with so many other difficulties in maintenance, heat profile, etc. that it will propably not be used again. So yeah, noise always gives away an aproaching tank column.
The L71 8.8cm gun on these bad boys was probably the best all round anti tank gun of WW2 that was fielded in serious numbers with an ability to knock out virtually everything it came up against at any range, if you could see it you could kill it. In a prepared ambush position i'm pretty sure one of these bad boys could seriously ruin a T62's day and any modern armour would be definately avoiding taking a hit from this gun, it might not penertrate but it would certainly do some damage. Interestingly these turretless tank destroyers were born of necesity to field as many of these guns as possible and really came to nothing, but the Jagdpanther has to be the pinnacle of the design concept.
The fact that he's only driving at 2 miles per hour for the entire video is a bit offputting but I still appreciate the rare history and the beautiful lines on that vehicle.

They were very rare in WW2 and now next to non existant. There is one running example in the UK (yellow/brown camo) and the one of this video. So two running ones for sure.. But UK one was finished post war by the British Army.

The transmission was delicate, at best. Even with top-notch quality parts and assembling, a Pz V chassis was still pretty unforgiving for most drivers and not a pretty sight for mechanics who had to work on it.
Imagine facing st. like that in WWII when you were conscripted soviet teen with minimal combat experience. With few Molotov’s in you bag and rifle with 5 Rounds in the chamber. And Kommissars in you back waiting to shot you if you try to retreat. You could say you have a bad day.
that was made late in the war when soviets had the upper hand. A sovjet SU-100 was more than a match for that beast and it was the germans, who were forced to use young boys and old men.

The loudest noise I ever heard in my entire life. It's like screaming in a metal concert, minus the sensation of your voice being hearable via your skull bones - that loud.
Arguable the best Tank Destroyer in WWII. In overall of Gun Power, mobility and armor. The only thing that could beat Jagdpanther is Hetzer due to price and reliability.
The SU-100 was a more successful model of armored vehicles in terms of the ratio of cost, the number of units produced and the armor penetration of the gun.

@@Eric-kn4yn I was there that day. They had to take out the engine and fix it before the ride - meaning they also had to start it once outside the tank, without mufflers. The loudest noise I ever heard in my entire life. It's like screaming in a metal concert, minus the sensation of your voice being hearable via your skull bones - that loud.

Arguable the best Tank Destroyer in WWII. In overall of Gun Power, mobility and armor. The only thing that could beat Jagdpanther is Hetzer due to price and reliability.

The Jagdpanther was the best tankdestroyer and the Hetzer was the second best.
All that glory and awe aside: More tank crews died in those vehicles than survived.
Much of that can be attributed to spalling due to a lack of right metals for the armor.

@@rainerfantasie9573 most tanks were never knocked out by the enemy rather destroyed by their own crews because of fuel and ammo shortage
