I've been a type one diabetic for 35 years. I wear a device called a continuous glucose monitoring system so I can always see my blood sugar levels. Seeing in real time what different foods do to blood sugar levels has been a serious eye-opener. The main thing I've learned is that natural foods that have sugars let's say apples/potatoes, etc., do not spike blood sugars, barely at all and fill me up quite well compared to let's say pasta/granola bar, etc. They spike the blood sugars much further and faster. Generally because of a couple of reasons. The processed food items tend to have much more sugar content/calorie content in the same weight/volume compared to natural food. Also, supposedly because natural foods also are much higher in fiber, naturally, the body burns more calories digesting the fiber, negating some of the calorie content in itself. If this makes sense. another great observation I've noticed is if I eat carbs in the morning, let's say because you're up and active they don't spike sugar levels as much. But if you eat them in the evening and then our less active/sleep, it stays higher in the system. Short take away, avoid carbs in the evenings. Stick to fat/protein/vegetables after supper if snacking, etc. Or low carb snack options. All my sugar levels overtime in correlation with the foods I eat to have gained this insight at least on my own body. processed foods digest much quicker and easier so they don't fill you up leaving you crave more. Natural foods keep you fuller longer. processing foods in most cases removes a lot of the fibers. So we tend to eat more and get more sugars in us in processed foods. Think of fibre as cheap filler. example vegetables are very high in fibre and quite low in calories. processed foods just concentrate the high calorie stuff like carbs/fats. But that's why they taste so good lol
Highly processed sugar/carbs when combined with fat/PUFAs are where the problem lies. Most junk foods that people love to label as "high carb" combine both high sugar and high fat.
This is the most overlooked concept in this whole debate. Pizza, fries, donors, cakes and etc, are commonly referred to as carbs. They are, however, many magnitudes higher in fat calories by percentage than carb calories. Yet they are commonly referred to as being bad due to their carb content..
It's the fructose that's more problematic. Fructose is good for starvation; that's why bears use it for hibernation. Fructose helps the body retain salt. Choline (eggs, etc.) helps move fructose out of the liver and to muscle, etc.
One thing you overlooked is that sugar is highly addictive in nature. So while it is true that a little sugar is good for you most fat people are already hooked on sugar in various forms and like all addicts if you quit then dabble you will relapse. I'm speaking for myself as well. I've been cutting out sugar and working on weight loss and muscle gain for a while. And while I've come a long long way, I know that if I crack open a can of coke right now I will be binge-eating cookies before I realize what happened
Good video. A lot of times, just a quick look at the ingredients will let me know if something is appropriate to eat or not. I have a list in my mind of “non-negotiable” ingredients that if I see, I’ll look for other options. For example, food dyes would be a pass for me. HFCS would be another. Just something to keep in mind.
@@joojotin I don’t eliminate carbs. Sugar, starch and fiber have their place in a diet, though for me, I would limit starch out of the 3. But for me, specific tell-tale ingredient names would tell me a lot about the particular food and whether it’s good enough or not.
You know what? I'll go along with this. It is ok for folks to eat sugar. First, cut out all ultra processed foods. No high fructose corn syrup, no maltodextrin. But you can have sugar.

@@maurice2014 yeah I will only eat a little bit of fruit a day and just other stuff who naturally have sugars in it. I would not get diabetes from that obviously.
That’s a normal function of our body. I wonder why people are scared of insulin spikes. Have you seen a dead body from insulin spikes? Fruit doesn’t come with only sugar but also other nutrients like vitamins, minerals, and fiber. Don’t be scared, bro. Cane sugar can be eaten in moderation. Like Jay said, anything can be bad if taken in excess.
Like he said, it's the dosage that does the damage. Where the weirdness lies is how that dosage can vary at the extreme tails of a population distribution.
Bingo on the sugar! Take in sugar with everything you eat now that's bad. You will get fat. Eat all types of foods in moderations and lift weights; muscle growth will come.
The only reason people with diabetes struggle is because they constantly create insulin resistance and there bodies run off glucose. Keto if done properly is most definetly a step and right direction towards curing it as the body runs off fat/ketones
Hi Jay, Everything in excess is bad for you (Including the gym). BTW, I heard you say that you sometimes take creatine before your workout. I was taking it post workout for recovery. But with HIT recovery is built in so I tried taking 3 grams pre-workout and 2 grams post workout. The results were nothing short of AMAZING! Great workout and the next day felt incredibly pumped and good! Still the normal soreness from the HIT workout but really pumped. Been watching your older videos and this current video looks like you've grown quite a bit. Good Job!
Humans need sugar. Originally we got it from the muscles of freshly hunted animals. Since we don't hunt nor eat raw meat anymore, then we need to take it from fruits or honey, for instance. The problem though is that many people take sugar from junk food. Not all sugar is equal for this reason. If the food is highly processed, it's going to produce inflammation, not to mention those types of foods are highly addictive. This is the problem. Fruits and honey are not addictive and are more or less natural. Stick with those.
Most people living in "civilized" societies should avoid sugar, especially obesity and diabetes are rampant. If people were very physically active and would eat primarily meat (fats and protein), when occasional or seasonal fruits and honey would not be an issue.
so true. sugar in general is ok. it's that we as a society are very sedentary and don't burn it off. i'm guilty of getting my workout and cardio done and then not moving as much as i'd like later in the day.
Sugar is fine in moderation. Just like protein and fat is fine in moderation. I'd say the more carbs/sugar you eat the less protein you need since sugar is protein sparing. And vice versa, you will need more protein if you eat less carbs. I would just keep fat and carbs separate since the main issue for people comes down to the fat causing insulin resistance. In the case of carnivore diet people who get "meat diabetes" its mainly because they eat 0 carbs and too much fat. If you want to eat carnivore go for it, but maybe eat some fruit? Maybe not with your meat meal? Just my thoughts cheers
